Vin Diesel offers new details about a third Chronicles of Riddick

Vin Diesel offers new details about a third \<i\>Chronicles of Riddick\<\/i\>

Vin Diesel revealed a few details to SCI FI Wire about a proposed third film in the Chronicles of Riddick series, which he confirmed is in the works.

David Twohy—who wrote and directed the previous two films, Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick—is currently writing the third installment, Diesel said in a conference call last week to promote his upcoming game, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

"We're going to find Riddick alone for the first part of the movie, barely alive, surrounded by carnivorous monsters who are trying to eat him," Diesel said in response to a question from SCI FI Wire. "So you'll see a futuristic Rambo-esque Riddick trying to survive."

Diesel added: "David Twohy is scripting the next installment of Riddick as we speak, and it's underway. The story will return to a Pitch Black [sensibility] while servicing the mythology that's been enhanced in Chronicles of Riddick."

It's a bit of surprise to hear that a third installment is in the works, given the critical and box-office drubbing the second film received. But Diesel remains enthusiastic. "It's so cool, this movie, I feel like I'm going to do it a disservice by trying to touch on it, but the answer is yes, we are working very hard on getting this next Riddick installment," he said. "You know how much I love this franchise and how dear it is to me, and you know how committed David Twohy has been to this franchise."

The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena will ship for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on April 7 in North America and April 24 in Europe.

I know people take pleasure in drubbing it, but I really enjoyed The Chronicles of Riddick. I thought the progression from Pitch Black was great, I thought the story fit well with the concept of the Hero's journey, and I'm really looking forward to any addition to the franchise.

Jill is absolutely right. The only reason why the second Riddick movie bombed is because the studie tamed it down to a PG-13 version that just really didn't make much sense. Get the Unrated version where the Director puts in a whole other side story that is just crucial to the film and you can see that The Chronicles of Riddick is actually one of the best action movies ever made. Truly great and I do hope for a third.

The Chronicles of Riddick was critically underrated and unfairly maligned. I too thought it was a good progression from Pitch Black and it stands up well. I didn't know there was an unrated version - thanks for the recommendation. I'm looking forward to the third installment.

Both Riddick movies are cool. I'm looking forward to more.

Your kidding right? A third Riddick film.

By just_N at 2:58 PM ON 03/11/09

I concur with the above comments. I was impressed at the depth of the story in The Chronicles of Riddick while the press bashed it. The scale of it's epic arc along Riddick's anti-hero character were probably too much for many critics to latch onto in an action sci-fi movie. I eagerly await future movies and will be picking up the new game when it comes out.

Riddick had its flaws, but was still a very enjoyable movie, I just re-watched both of them recently, and still enjoy them, and would love to see a well done 3rd installment.

By Justo at 3:59 PM ON 03/11/09

Yeah Riddick wasn't perfect, but definitely had some awesomeness too it. All the gritty stuff was great, the mercs and such. When it got into religion and tried to be a war movie, then it was weak. Though I must say the brief aerial battle at the start of the invasion was damn impressive. Among the best in a sci-fi movie. Though Pitch Black was likewise flawed. Once it turned into a monster movie it was lame. I don't know how many times I've watched that movie up to when the suns go down, and then turn it off. I hope the 3rd one doesn't turn out to be just the worst of both of those movies, though it sounds almost like it could be.

I really liked the first two films, so I look forward to this one. It would be great to have a truly good sci-fi/action trilogy like this.

By Seanbtwo at 4:46 PM ON 03/11/09

I loved both Riddick films - I thought the second one had a kind of Warhammer 40k feel to it, which was awesome. I'm looking forward to a third one, but I'd REALLY love to see a W40K Flick. All hail the God-Emperor! ;-)

By squirrel at 5:31 PM ON 03/11/09

Wow they are actually making a third movie....... Jeez I had given up hope a long time ago for that to ever happen. But this is actually cool, as long as they continue off what they started in Chronicles Of Riddick it should be good.

Goes to make me think if Planet of the Apes will ever get a sequel and Battlefield Earth too. Hey if Riddick can get another sequel after it''s box office failure then that movie can too.

Another big fan of Chronicles - loved the design of the whole film, the sets, the costumes, the effects. I could never understand how for a supposedly open minded fandom, wanting to explore boundaries, the sci fi fraternity turned on this film, that was really something quite unique and special. In so many ways, it reminded me of David Lynch's Dune, and I've spoken with other friends who agreed. One day, hopefully, time will remember at as something more than the turkey of that year, and see it as a unique and daring adventure.

If there is a third Riddick feature (well, fourth if you include the excellent Dark Fury animated installment) I will be there, front of the line on opening weekend.

By Requiem1971 at 6:48 PM ON 03/11/09

To learn of a possible third installment, I find myself elated. I have enjoyed the first two films, the second more than the first, and believe that a third is long overdue. The second movie was pretty deep, maybe too deep for some to feel comfortable with...like the aforementioned Dune. (Original Dune w/ Patrick Steward and Sting) I don't see how they can go from making him Lord Martial in the last to casting him into carnivorous animal’s barleyalive. Will be interesting to find out how, though.

I know people love to put this movie down and complain about how it lost money. However the box office sales (domestic and foreign) were $115 million and the production costs were $105 mil. That is not a big profit, however when you add in DVD sales, some money was made. I don't have all the numbers, but the Unrated Director's Cut DVD sold 1.5 million copies the first day it was offered! This is a franchise that (done right) can continue to make good (if not great) money.
And I, for one, look forward to seeing more!

By NKWulf at 7:38 PM ON 03/11/09

I just hope that its a conclusion to the second movie, not a movie set between 1 and 2...or worse yet a "remake" of 1. I hate when they do things like that.

By Miles T at 9:40 PM ON 03/11/09

I never understood why Chronicles was maligned...it is one of my favorite movies and I've watched umteen times!!

By ALBEGAO at 12:48 AM ON 03/12/09

Hello! The first? not bad! The second? Was good. I paid to see it and did not felt ripped off! (Yes! Am Stingie!). So my hope is they can do the third in a way it becomes the new "T2".

By Bob at 3:34 AM ON 03/12/09

Movie critics are too dense to understand good Sci-Fi.

By shroudedwolf at 10:21 AM ON 03/12/09

Yeah, see, all of these responses just proves that it wasn't universally hated. The second movie had a few "over the top campy" moments, but was otherwise a great action flick with wonderful visuals. I mean, come on, Dame Judi Dench and Karl Urban were both in it with Deisel. If nothing else, the franchise is a cult classic, much like Total Recall and I think deserves a third. I'll line up for it. :)

By cybrsrfr at 11:57 AM ON 03/12/09

Heck, I even enjoyed the animated feature, Dark Fury. Looking forward to the next film.

By Goolian at 1:53 PM ON 03/12/09

I loved Chronicles of Riddick. Frankly, this Riddick 3 sounds a little bit like Alien3 to me -- take it back to a "smaller feel" and all that. NOT GOOD. I would rather see what happened when Riddick took control of the Necromonger empire, to tell the truth

By txGreg at 2:00 PM ON 03/12/09

Cool - I've liked all things Riddick so far (films, anime, games) and see no reason why I won't like the newest one.

Ignore the "critics," and just watch what you like! :)

i luvd chronicles glad 2 c third in the works

By Furian at 12:03 AM ON 03/13/09

I'm ready for a new verse... an underverse...

By Vlad at 12:54 AM ON 03/13/09

I was surprised at how good Chronicles was, but it fell victim to Dune syndrome - towards the end, it just felt a bit like it was going through the motions, and the final battle was over in a sort of inexplicable way... it left me cold. Up until then, though, it had some really gripping sequences. A better ending would have made it a very good movie, instead of just a reasonably good one.

By Angie93 at 6:33 PM ON 03/19/09

Yay! i'm stoked ! I've been a Riddick fan since i was like 7, when PB came out. I love the whole riddick-verse.
As for the whole Dune thing, yeah I see it now retrospect, but the characters are original I think.
I;m pumped to see how it's gonna go :)

By Cyllan at 9:12 PM ON 03/20/09

Just saw Vin talking about this on a show on BBC1 - can't wait to see the next installment of Riddick, it's a seriously underrated movie and a longtime favourite of mine. Would love to see a 40k movie too - I hear he enjoys the game? Come on Vin, make it your next project!!!

By DanteBlack at 3:14 PM ON 03/24/09

Personally, the Chronicles franchise re-introduced me to the sci-fi/fantasy genre, for which Im grateful...takes a girl away from the days of Christmas lights and cardboard sets. Frankly, I believe anyone speaking critically of the films/animations/games, hasn't spent much time in the world of Twohy and Diesel. Its exceptional..by all definition and if you're honest...unrivaled in the last 20yrs. I would love to see this installment followed by the next...as its not nice to keep a lady waiting Vin...or tease for that matter...shhh, ease up on the details...

...since its been mentioned, BBC1- the Friday Night with Jonathan Ross interview was the best to date.

By M. Or at 7:43 PM ON 03/28/09

I'm looking forward to the next Riddick and am glad Diesel is still positive about making it. Now, just hurry up and make it already please!

By Bectile at 10:11 PM ON 07/05/09

This is excellent news, I loved both previous films and was sad when the future looked so empty... Riddick is an awesome character and there is so much left to tell!!!
