Warner Brothers to adapt Stephen King's It for the big screen

Warner Brothers to adapt Stephen King\'s \<i\>It\<\/i\> for the big screen
From ABC's 1990 miniseries It

Warner Brothers has tapped Dave Kajganich to adapt Stephen King's novel It for the big screen, with Dan Lin and Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison producing, Variety reported.

It centers on seven children in a small Maine town who confront the source of a series of murders in 1958 and again in 1985, when the cycle begins again. The novel was previously adapted into a 1990 ABC miniseries.

Kajganich is also writing Escape From New York for Neal Moritz and New Line.

O my god!! this is so bad.. stay off that movie, and Tim Curry is the only real Pennywise!

By blackwolf at 10:42 AM ON 03/13/09

I would to agree that is not a good idea stop making so many remakes

By nonfreak at 11:13 AM ON 03/13/09

I somewhat blame King. He can't possibly think this is a good idea. And yet, he must be willing to go through with it because how else could they get the rights to do it?

What the hell?! Man... These half assed remakes of my childhood movies are really getting on my nerves. BEEP BEEP RITCHIE!

Its an 1100 page book! There is no way to edit this down to a two hour movie without raping the plot.

By penny.W at 2:54 PM ON 03/13/09

Only, and ONLY if they bring back Curry.

King doesn't have the movie rights to much of his work, he has many many dollars instead.

I have to agree with this. A four hour, two episode miniseries did not do the source material justice. Cutting i down to two hours...just not enought time to tell the story properly. Even if its one of those three hour marothons, that's still not enough time to tell all of this story...which could be incredible if properly done.

And by the by...if say...oooooh...Adam West had been cast as Pennywise...or whoever, doesn't matter who...that individual would now be said to be "born to play" the role or whatever. Tim Curry will almost certainly NOT be cast in the role, so lets give whoever is, a fair shot at playing the role. Poor dude is gonna have enough trouble doing this, considering the potential script length problems, without unfair comparisons to someone else's interpretation of the character. '

YEP...CAPTCHA DID IT AGAIN!

You are assuming they will only do two hours. I think they could do it justice around the three hour mark. Look at The Green Mile! They missed almost nothing and I find it to be the best book to movie adaptation I've seen.

By wrjones at 6:04 PM ON 03/13/09

Also, let's not forget the original miniseries was blatantly lacking points emphasized in the book!

By Scanner at 6:57 PM ON 03/13/09

I'm of mixed feelings about this... I absolutely loved the book, the mini-series was decent enough but I always felt that it wasn't nearly enough time to cover all the points of the book yet it did cover all the RELEVANT points of the book but my only real complaint was that it didn't adequately examine the end of the movie comprehensively. The flip side of that argument is that who wants to sit through a 16 hour mini-series with commercials. Roots was one thing, but a horror movie? A 2 hour movie won't cut it, but a 3 or 4 part mini-series of 2 hours each (after commercials) might make the grade.

As for actors, I'm with JBS780 on that one, if the actors/actresses can look the part and act the part, it should work out well. Fortunately, the initial mini-series nailed the casting on the head as far as I'm concerned, it'll be hard to top that but nothing is impossible. :)

The Green Mile was an excellent adaptation. However, the serial novel it was based on is only about 1/3 (if that) the length of the novel "It". To render a similar level of quality that stays true to the source material would need 9+ hours.

I don't think film is the way to go with this story.

This is obviously yet another blatantly clear example of the lack of creativity and imagination in Hollywood these days. Very sad.

By mhj555 at 10:08 AM ON 03/18/09

Please tell me that John-Boy won't be in this one.

By scorekid at 7:11 PM ON 04/12/09

I hope they keep that creepy theme. And the circus/Pennywise music. Tim Curry and the music really worked.

By Lotmeister at 10:12 PM ON 05/17/09

Actually back when they did the TNT version of "Salem's Lot" I heard that the same people were going to do a version of "IT" as well... guess that never got off the ground.

By freeman at 2:43 AM ON 08/22/09

I personally have not read the book, haven't really read any Stephen King, liked a few movies.

I feel I have a fairly short attention span and I found it very easy to sit through the entire mini-series in one go because of how engaging it was. I feel that they should really make this into like two parts or some shit

By dilleysb at 8:23 PM ON 08/23/09

This is not a good idea. Love the book and the mini-series even though both have their flaws. (The cast in the series was an asset IMHO). One of the problems with the series is that it cut too much of what was good from the book. A movie will have to cut more. Warner Bros. must be out of their tiny mind.

If they do IT again, it should be as a longer series with all of the major digressions covered (the night club story, for example) and that sam-fran-tastic ending kept.

By tvirusgetz at 12:23 AM ON 09/15/09

i guess it could be made a 2 parter...the first part ends when they defeat It the first time and the second part the rest
both parts 3 hours long should be fine
