Oh my God. This looks awful. J.J. may jazz up the suspense and action from the pathetic efforts of Braga and Berman, but this shall never match, let alone exceed, the politically insightful, dramatically realistic and honestly gutsy work of Ira Steven Behr and his writers on Star Trek: DS9. Paramount has spat on his proverbial face by letting this hack and his lame Alias/Transformers writers make Star Trek "cool" without any substance or exploration of the human condition in a way that isn't ridiculously cliche and fails to speak at all to the times in which we live.
Seriously, look at the issues of explored on DS9 from the motivations behind terrorism to the moral dilemmas of war to a subtle understanding that the Founders and Gul Dukat were not evil, even if their actions were. It's brilliant stuff that far better explores these issues than the mainstream media that became so obsessed with them after 9/11 but failed to provide any insight to the American public.
Ira Steven Behr continued with this bold exploration in Seasons 3 and 4 of "The 4400" -- including a complicated sense of religion as not simply between the dichotomies of having complete faith or none at all, morally grey characters like Jordan Collier that expose the complex nature of political/revolutionary leadership, and a storyline that did not resort to all-knowing supernatural forces or fate -- when it was mercilessly cut down at its height. He should have gotten the shot at revamping Star Trek, not these yahoos. However, Paramount always treated DS9 as the bastard child and condescends to fans by doling out this kind of crap.

I think you smoke too much weed...Berman was the demise of the Trek franchise!
JJ is breathing new life into a stale franchise and not to mention bringing a new generation to Trek.

Berman, Braga, Ira Steven Behr, and JJ...have all made a mess out of Star Trek!
By Kalma at 5:01 AM ON 03/30/09
well options being no trek movie or trek movie with abrams, i'm willing to give this a chance. I dont think the trek movies were ever really great or even close to what the series were, so i don't think this can really be worse than the few movies before and the few movies a like after and before that. I hope this would give a spark for new series.
Abrams did quite ok with fringe, maybe he'll get some budget for trek series as well.
As for trek series, kinda liked them all except the Entreprise, which was total bs story, actor and direction wise. DS9 is different and definetly has some good characters and dark but enjoyable storyline but it quite didn't have the charisma of TNG tbh. Voyager wasn't that bad, satisfactory fix for scifi junkie.

A34d ["And"-stupid cat] I say that Doctor Who is better. I am speaking, of course of the upcoming "Dead Planet".
By Knowles2 at 6:13 AM ON 03/30/09
really not liking the water pipe scene and some of the cgi does not look right.
And DS9 was awesome and some of the space battles, had the exact right mix of realistic navy combat with more star warsey action and speed feel to them.
And DS9 in my opinion was probably the best trek there has been, better than even the original by a long way.

Get a grip people. It's not even out yet.
I'll hold back judgement until I actually see it.
By jeff.wooddell at 8:17 AM ON 03/30/09
I'm making plans to see it at midnight on the 7th. I'd go over the weekend if I could convince my wife to watch it in Imax! I also enjoyed DS9. Voyager got a little tiring at the end, but I stuck it out for all 7 seasons. My all-time favorite ST episodes were "Court Martial" on TOS; and "Inner Light" on TNG.

When can get bring Starlost to the big screen?

Uber Critic - Roddenberry made a mess out of STAR TREK and he was the guy who came up with the show. People do the best they can and utilize their talents. You have this imaginery of perfection that doesn't exist in people. Roddenberry had good ideas but a terrible writer and producer; Berman was a fine producer but no creative insight; Ira is a fine writer but doesn't have the grand vision; JJ is a fine storyteller and knows how to utilze a team as an executive producer to deliver good stories and products. Uber: Tune in to reality occassionally and you'll see that they do the best they can, with what they can.

Muldfeld your insane , this looks fantastic. This series was dead , gone. The ratings for the tv show were crap and the last 2 movies were glorified tv episodes at best. And bad ones no less.
This reboot of the series will bring in new fans , they get to see the original 2 heroes from the beginning. They don't have to worry about all the back story's as this is the beginning of what made Star Trek so interesting. Plus having Nimoy involved is great for the old time fans. Seriously this is going to be a fun movie for everyone.
By John at 10:10 AM ON 03/30/09
Okay, have any of you people discussing the combat aspect of Trek actually seen this "real Naval combat" you speak of, or is your experience based on what Hollywood has shown you?
Been there, done that... got the T-shirt.
By billhedrick at 10:15 AM ON 03/30/09
OK, I post this same comment on every Trek post, because you fanbois don't get it. You haven't seen the movie. You don't know if it's any good yet. Wait until you or someone has seen the whole movie.
By BourneKiller97 at 10:21 AM ON 03/30/09
I don't know if anyone on this board is familiar with JJ's other shows like Alias but at the end of this trailer behind the wet Scotty on our right side of the screen is an actress who played in JJ's other shows including Alias. Also to answer the question of who's the guy in the tube, it's Scotty because he's all wet while others around him are dry. Can't wait to see this movie, it's been a long time since we had and good material from this franchise. Live long and Prosper.
By fanboy d at 11:48 AM ON 03/30/09
these bitching and moaning trekkies remind me of that 'i'm the only gay in the village' sketch off of little britain, they're just getting upset that they're show is mainstream and potentially not lame balls

brilliant post!! one of the few posts that is actually objective and intelligent.
Oh and quoting Network gets you a free pie. Thats my fave movie :D

I personally was a TNG fan and could not stand DS9. I found it pretensious and boring, trying to be too clever. That and the incarnations to follow just followed the same worn out path which eventually caused the death knell of the series/films.
I will reserve judgment on the film to i have actually watched it and not a trailer. I think it looks superb from the clips and i hope the movie is as good in full as the clips tease you.
If not, at least someone tried to re-invigorate the franchise and take it in a different direction, one which has not been explored since TNG left the screens. (my own personal opinion i may add)
By xse at 1:10 PM ON 03/30/09
What is a preconception? Is it a rational judgment based on concrete facts, or just a gut instinct based on superficial arguments. I haven’t seen the new Star Trek movie, no one in the general population has. Yet there seem to be rampant opinions of this film, more then a month before its release. Does this have anything to do with the fact that it is a cultural icon? Are people offended that someone would dare to touch something that has been a part of their lives for over four decades? The short answer is yes, and no.
Trolls are trolls, there is no debating the fact that they will nitpick and hate regardless of the quality of the film. This could be a masterpiece (which I personally doubt), and someone would still find fault with it. I have been a fan of the series since I was a child. I have literally grown up with Star Trek. And yet I find absolutely no fault in those who would attempt to breath new life in to the franchise. My personal reasons are simple; the series had been dead for years. Who am I to argue with someone who wants to re-start something I hold dear. If it does turn out to be a travesty then I will shelve Star Trek and live with my fond memories of my favorite episodes.
Whatever Roddenberry created was over a long time ago. Social commentary utilized through fiction has always been a staple of Star Trek, but it wasn’t its defining characteristic. Even classic trek had its flaws and foibles; I think most people build up a perfect vision of the past. This show was great, this one sucked. Take Voyager for example; there was absolutely nothing wrong with the series in general. It did suffer from a couple of lifeless and boring characters, and they had to recover after effectively writing them selves into an impossible corner. It did lack creativity in a lot of ways and it lacked true innovation. But it was Trek, it was thought provoking and kept true to the spirit of the series. I can’t fault the producers for that; I can only fault them for playing it safe.
Lets hope that JJ tries to innovate, and let’s hope this does re-invigorate the franchise. Because I do believe the world of television is a better place with new Trek.
By Informed Misery at 1:18 PM ON 03/30/09
What a load of hogwash.
The purpose of a trailer is to hint and tease about the movie to be released. It is perfectly reasonable to watch a trailer and make a judgment. That's what it's for. I don't see you criticizing the people who watch the trailer and say, "That looks awesome!"
Yes, it's true, you can't judge the entire movie until you've seen it. But we all have the right to judge what we HAVE seen. And what I've seen in the trailers looks really stupid.
By xse at 1:52 PM ON 03/30/09
I never said you couldn't have an opinion. If the elements of the film don't appeal to you from the trailer, then don't go to the film. I was speaking as a whole, I find it incredibly asinine to pass judgments on what we have seen. The trailers account for less then 2% of the total film run time.
From what I've seen it looks like they are trying to attract a mass audience with the trailers, using the big special effect sequences in an attempt to dazzle. Using that tactic it isn't surprising that very little substance can related.
By bombdrop at 2:38 PM ON 03/30/09
Yes, trolls are trolls, and they will continue to hype up this p-o-s movie until it comes out and then quitetly hide back under the rocks they came out from under.
By fizzben at 8:43 PM ON 03/30/09
I think we'll see who'll be hiding under the rocks when the general public proves the
p-o-s attitudes wrong. You must have thought Nemisis was piece of art.
By NemesisWasMyNemesis at 1:06 AM ON 03/31/09
I have watched Nemesis twice now and still fail to see how anyone thinks that the Romulan looks anything like Picard except being blad.
By fizzben at 8:53 AM ON 03/31/09
Also, Paramount has just announced the go ahead for a sequel. So ya'll may as well re-fuel your flame thowers.
By bombdrop at 12:17 PM ON 03/31/09
Nemesis wan't a very good movie, but it WAS Star Trek TNG. This coming movie is not Star Trek, despite the misleading title.
By Nid at 1:00 PM ON 03/31/09
Star Trek is a perfect example of how you can't have the best of both worlds in movies. You can have either something that is heavy and message-laden; so much so that movement is minimal and action is incredulous. Or, you can have kick-ass action for two hours with no semblance of a plot. It reminds me of the main battle of LOTR - Return of the King. That battle did not end with a spectacular bang (Even though it did not whimper out). It resorted to close-ups of principle characters saying yarrrr and waving their swords.
Since Star Trek is Paramount's attempt to keep afloat, take the movie or leave it. It is not a guarantee of quality entertainment. The TV show was 100% great; all of the successors were not even close.
By bombdrop at 2:25 PM ON 03/31/09
Nid, I agree with you. Some people just don't understand. I'm not against trying to restart Star Trek at all. I know there have to be new people playing the roles. I know the SFX will look better. It's just the idea of changing what is Star Trek into something that is not Star Trek that bothers fans. Also the same tired arguement keeps coming up: TNGwas different, DS9 was different, Voyager was different, Enterprise was different. That is true, but they were not trying to be Star Trek. They were what they were. What if they'd started over with DS9 instead of the original Trek? If they were redoing DS9 for the big screen & changed everything, most of the ones bashing me & those of similar views would be screaming volumes louder than we are. They need to absorb this instead of instantly screaming "Crybaby whiner loser geek!"
