Watchmen tops box office with $55.7M

\<i\>Watchmen\<\/i\> tops box office with $55.7M

Watchmen debuted in first place over the March 6 weekend, taking in an estimated $55.7 million on approximately 7,500 screens at 3,611 theaters, BoxOfficeMojo reported.

Watchmen's opening was the biggest opening of 2009 so far, but it fell a bit short of expectations and paled in comparison to Snyder's last film, 300, which set the March opening record, with $70.9 million on around 4,800 screens at 3,103 sites (which included $3.6 million at 62 IMAX venues).

But the $150 million adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel notched the 12th-highest-grossing opening weekend for a comic-book movie, behind Fantastic Four (though it drops to 20th when ticket-price inflation is factored).

Opening in the greatest number of theaters ever of any R-rated movie, Watchmen also had the sixth-highest debut for an R-rated movie, behind The Matrix Reloaded, The Passion of the Christ, 300, Hannibal and Sex and the City.

Watchmen was the sole new nationwide release of the weekend, so grosses were mostly business as usual beneath it. The bottom fell out for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which dropped 71 percent to an estimated $1.4 million, for a total after 10 days of just $7.1 million.

WOW! That like 10 time what JJ ABrams Star Trek Will make it's first weekend and total run

By Kerrith at 7:58 PM ON 03/08/09

Why do they have to spin it like it isn't a success? It made 1/3 of its initial budget on opening weekend. As for not matching 300, a 2 hour 40 min movie can't play as often unless they doubled the number of screens it would play on. For an R rated comic book movie I think $55.7 million is pretty damn good!

By abeery at 8:00 PM ON 03/08/09

My family and I walked out of this movie rather than finish watching it... It's based on a comic book like Spiderman, Superman, The Hulk or Batman but unlike any of those films this horrible thing has very little worth watching and quite a bit that is just sick -- rape, gore, swearing... unfortunately many families will be like mine and take children to see this horror not realizing what is going to happen. I feel victimized by this movie and I spent hours appologizing to my 8 year old

By moonunit at 8:12 PM ON 03/08/09

what are you doing taking an 8 year old to an R rated movie anyway abeery?

but its not going to warp your kid or anything, he'll have some cool stories to tell his friends at school

By Syberwolf at 8:13 PM ON 03/08/09

An amazing movie, Snyder couldn't have done a better job. The attention to detail and how closely the movie was adapted to the book was I believe the best anyone could hope for. The changes he made to the ending fit perfectly with the movie and he integrated it seamlessly. A great movie worth a second viewing. As for people who were shocked at the nudity, language and violence, it was rated R for a reason. If you're taking a child to a rated R movie perhaps a little research on the material would help...or don't take them at all. AWESOME..!!! EVERYONE GO SEE THIS MOVIE !!

By z18 at 8:15 PM ON 03/08/09

Well, that's too bad. It's also too bad for other families that don't notice that it's rated.....R. It's a great story, but it deals with some rough issues. Leave the 8 year olds at home folks, this isn't the Super Friends.

By Dan at 8:18 PM ON 03/08/09

Haha! Suck shit it's R rated you moron. Your kids deserve to be scared because of your ignorance.

By RyoGeo at 8:30 PM ON 03/08/09

Wow, abeery, it must be an interesting world you live in where you think an R rated movie of any type is a good ticket for your 8 year old. Oh, and by the way, this movie is ABSOLUTELY NOT "based on a comic book like Spiderman, Superman, The Hulk or Batman." It is a comic book that has been around for over 20 years that flies in the face of the entire super hero genre and provokes some very difficult questions about humanity.

Although, I wouldn't expect someone that believes "this horrible thing has very little worth watching and quite a bit that is just sick" to actually understand any of the message of the film anyway. I might recommend Paul Blart, Mall Cop or perhaps Space Chimps to one of your stunning intellect. Such films don't ask too much of their viewers, let alone ask them to ponder any serious questions.

Oh, and just so were clear, yes, you are a stupid, stupid person for taking an 8 year old to an R rated movie and expecting anything less than you got.

By Darth Neas at 8:35 PM ON 03/08/09

I still can't get over the number of people that consider this a "kid's" movie just because it's based on a comic. Hey parents, not every comic is for kids.

By Richard at 8:45 PM ON 03/08/09

I have never read the graphic novel. I just saw the movie and found it to be coherent in its narrative and an interesting movie. At two and a half hours, I was not fidgety or bored. I give it a thumbs up. But it is definitely not for children.

--------- GREAT FIME----------

Panel for Panel they captured and had all the characters perfectly. Humor, Action, Drama, and Misery. This film was far better than Chun Li ever could be. Let the 2009 Blockbusters begin.

By hermy at 10:52 PM ON 03/08/09

it was great.they did the best they could with a very complex story.as a new parent myself.i find strange that so many parent complain about adult content of tv ,movies and video games then they ignore the ratings they fight so hard to get

By Al at 10:53 PM ON 03/08/09

As expected, there will be some people who still do not understand the idea that a comic based movie will also be an R rated movie intended for adults only.

I'm sure some parents were also ignorant enough to take children into The Dark Knight and ended up with children afraid of clowns from then on and the mere mention of Two-Face.

This is a movie that, like the comic, is intended to provide an alternate look at what heroes could become in a real world rather than a campy "good guy versus bad" scenario older comics always portrayed.

We are supposed to look at the possibilities of right and wrong and good not always doing what is expected of them.

Enjoy it or hate it, but don't delude yourself into thinking an adult oriented movie must be bad for its adult content.

FYI... "R" rating!!! For those of you who think this JUST a 'superhero' movie. OH, is it SO much more! =) I've watched it TWICE this weekend. My girlfriend & I are both very well educated and intelligent people. I gave her the recently re-printed 1st issue of the "Watchmen" to read before she saw the movie, and she thanked me for having her do that. We spoke about a number if the issues brought up by concepts in the movie and number of others which were alluded to in the movie, just not totally explored. VERY thought provoking! I'm sure we will talk much more about concepts from the 'story' of "Watchmen" for some time. This has been a piece of 'Cold War' literature which even today is still completely relevant! Maybe more so today. No matter how this 'story' is told, in a 'graphic novel' or in a 'movie' is thought provoking and deep and makes you think and debate for a while after you experience it. Now that is true literature! Thank you Alan Moore, wherever you are!

By movienut at 1:34 AM ON 03/09/09

Saw "Watchmen" today and I must say that it is the best adaptation of a graphic novel to date. Panel to panel, Snyder delivered. Even the ending I must say was better then the novel version, which was much more devious, then the "squid." Can't wait to see the longer versions on DVD.

As for taking kids to an R rated film, I must say that just goes to show just how brain dead our general population is. But having said that I must be a damaged person as my parents let me watch R rated films well before I was "of age." But they always explained that it was just a story, and that the exploding dog scene in "John Carpenter’s The Thing" wasn't real but a work of special effects by talented artists, or that the women in "Total Recall" didn't really have three breasts that's just makeup, or the shark in "Jaws" didn't really eat that little boy on the beach, or that guy really didn't rip that slaves heart out in 'Temple of Doom," hey that was even PG back then! Seeing films like that probably jumped started my creative career into advertising years later. As I said my parents let me watch R rated films, but never took me to see an R rated film in the theater they were always viewed later at home on cable. I think this had something to do with the movie trailers at the theater having a message on it? A movie trailer usually has a large three second frame of green that says "This Preview Has Been Rated R For Strong Graphic Violence, Sexuality, Nudity and Language" there must be a reason for saying that hmmmm...

"Watchmen" really is for adults, not just because of the sex and violence, but because the story is complicated and that a child of 8 years probably won't be able to follow it. So don't blame the movie, the theater, the studio, or the producers, you have only yourself to blame. Who knows, in a few years your 8 year old will be sneaking a copy of "Showgirls" to watch when you're not home...

So Say We All Everybody.

saw this twice in one day, infact i saw it one after the other, for a graphic novel or comic as some refer to it as being, is by far the best movie adaption ive seen, zack snyder is fast becoming a pulp icon, i cant wait to see his next project

By jtalker1965 at 8:11 AM ON 03/09/09

The movie SUCKED a big one!! I am a big comic fan and this really bite. If it makes half of the in the second week I'll be surprised.
And to "ALL KNOWING" you don't have a clue about Star Trek. Two different types of movies and I would bet that in the long run Star Trek will pull better numbers.

By Pauul at 8:30 AM ON 03/09/09

I'm looking forward to "Star Trek" but "Watchmen" is something unique. For the first time in years I think I'm gonna go watch a movie for a second time. I mean, it's not that I don't love movies, it's just that I'm tight with money. But "Watchmen" is so worth it. Truly a fantastic piece of film making. I hope "Watchmen" does really well. It certainly deserves to.

By DirtyBadger at 8:35 AM ON 03/09/09

I watched the movie Friday and found it to be an excellent adaptation of the graphic novel and I think Alan Moore should get off his throne and go watch it then insert his foot into his mouth for all of his retard comments...you sold your soul to the devil so take your money and shut the hell up!!
As for muppet Americans taking kids to an adult movie hey I am not suprised one bit.
You should try the uk rating system
U, PG, PG12, 15 and 18 Watchmen was classified as 18 in the UK and that means if you want to watch you have to be at least 18.
Its quite simple really. Oh and this aint no superhero flick like batman or spiderman.
As for Star Trek there is no comparison there are about 100 times more people on this rock who know of star trek than watchmen so yeah Star Trek will gross more at the box office.
Muppet Americans!!

To all who commented on my stupidity for taking an 8 year-old to an R-Rated movie... I could not agree with you more. UNFORTUNATELY I failed to notice it was R-RAted and the theater did not warn me. All I saw was a bunch of superheros and thought I was taking my kid to see something like Batman or X-Men. My point was the mistake (mine to be sure) was far to easy to make... let's face it the promotional posters do look like this is a family friendly superhero flick just like the many that have been coming out recently.

My wife and I enjoyed the movie a great deal, as did the friend with us who had never read the graphic novel. I hope that word of mouth will keep people going to see the movie in coming weeks. I know I'm talking it up.

This is certainly not a film for kids. Neither were the original comics. The content is very thought-provoking, and there are themes in it that still relate to current or recent events.

Abeery, I'm sorry to see the bad reactions you got from your initial post. I'd like to suggest that you and your husband try the movie without the kids. Maybe you'd like to read the graphic novel first, but that really isn't necessary to understand and enjoy the film. Yes, there is a lot of moral ambiguity in the story. That same kind of moral confusion is found in real life. Think of Ozymandias played by George Bush, for instance, and you'll realize that there are themes here that really do affect all of us. Please don't condemn the movie because you misinterpreted the teasers for it.

By VJASEditor at 11:11 AM ON 03/09/09

Abeery.

So you feel that you are justified because you didn't bother to find out, and you weren't warned?

I don't know where you are here, even if you bypass the ticket counter by buying tickets at a terminal the movie was clearly rated. At the ticket counter it had a list of movies playing and what the rating are.

Yes it is sad if a ticket vender didn't question your buying a child's ticket for the film, but that does let you off the hook for making a bad choice or doing your homework.

And I fail to see where the poster showed family fair. Yes there are people in costume, but that doesn't mean "Bring the kids" I doubt you went to the theater without any idea what you were going to, And you likely looked up theater times in the paper on online, another two places that would have the ratings listed.

I commend you for stating you know you made a mistake, but it was only easy to make because you didn't bother to look as you should have.

By Al at 11:13 AM ON 03/09/09

Superhero movies are fast becoming more adult oriented and should definitely be carefully screened by any parent.

Iron Man may be acceptable for many parents, although the promiscuity and drinking is still debatable; but Dark Knight, Watchmen, and even Hancock are definitely not made for pre-teens.

Don't judge any book by its cover and don't take your child to see a movie just because the costumes look like other hero flicks.

By Outofthesilent at 11:49 AM ON 03/09/09

oh Abeery.... Seriously... "the promotional posters do look like this is a family friendly superhero flick".... You know I always think the "poster" of a naked guy flying through a glass window to his death as FAMILY FRIENDLY. In fact the other day I said to my sons (9,7, and 5) hey kids you want to go see that movie where there is a naked blue guy, and girls where tight clothes, and a guy lights a cigar with a flame thrower!?! That is SOOO much like Power Rangers....

Yep... tottaly family friendly... Especially when you look around the theater and see only 20 and 30 something males in the theather... that is ONE Family Flick....

By jdmimic at 12:25 PM ON 03/09/09

I have to agree with Al, superhero movies in general are not the kiddie family fare movies they once were. The moviemakers are taking them more seriously and are trying to make them more thought provoking to appeal to an older set that actually has the money to go out and see a movie without depending on their parents to pick the show. I did not understand all the little kids in the theater when I saw the Dark Knight. Parents really need to stop thinking of any movie with people in tights as kiddie fare. Never ever take a little kid to a movie without screening it first. Know what you are getting into before you let your kids watch it or you have no one but yourself to blame. It is the responsibility of the parent to safequard their kids, not the theaters to stop every parent and carefully explain to them what they are about to see.

And Scifiwire? Fix your damnable comment entry form so the text check actually works correctly.

I went to see this film, and I loved it! Absolutely loved it! I didn't see many kids at the theater I went to, if any, but it was a pretty large auditorium. But grownups shouldn't bring kids under 10 to see a film like this anyway.

By General Zod at 3:17 PM ON 03/09/09

you go to the counter the tickets say R rated, you wait to go in and look at the posters that say R rated, you sit down and watch the film when it says R rated before it starts.
idiot.... this film is not for 8 year old take some responsibilty your bad your mistake.... grow up!

By Dr. Malcolm Long at 4:04 PM ON 03/09/09

The more I think about the movie, the more I realize I really, really liked it and want to see it again. I'm hoping it actually DOESN'T make a lotta money so the studios aren't tempted to make a sequel.
Thank you, Alan Moore, for such a powerful story. It's still there, on my shelf.

i was curious . I never heard of the novel but after watching the whole movie I loved the movie . jeffery dean morgan playing
"The Comedian" was amazing . his character was such a bastard but then you couldn't help but like him. I'm going again to see it .

Abeery,

When i went to the movie , I didn't know anything about it , but after seeing promos In knew not to take my 3 year ol niece . Kissing scences, man get thrown out window , flame throwing masked guy, cold war scenes but you still took your son? maybe if he read the book okay , but I told all my friends with kids not to take them. It is an amazing movie though !

By Rico at 11:48 PM ON 03/09/09

Apologizing to your 8yo for what? Kids today experience some pretty messed up stuff in public school already. He/she should be ok.

Heck, I was 8 or 9 when my mom took me to see RoboCop, and in its day, it was pretty violent and so on, but it never gave me nightmares or anything.

By pbeery at 12:36 AM ON 03/10/09

Hey Andy couldn't you have come up with a better handle? geez dude. you're trashing my name too. This wasn't a comic book movie. It was a greek tragedy cast in an alternate history modern world. Not that it matters; but this film/story is oscar worthy.
