Will there be a familiar face on George Lucas\' \<i\>Star Wars\<\/i\> TV show?
Jay Laga'aia as Captain Typho

New Zealand actor Jay Laga'aia is talking to George Lucas about a role in a live-action Star Wars television series next year, the New Zealand-based newspaper the Dominion Post reported.

Lucas had previously cast Laga'aia as Captain Gregar Typho, Amidala's head of sercurity, in Star Wars: Episode II—Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith. It's unclear if he's in talks to reprise the role or to play a different one.

The series will reportedly follow the Rebel Alliance as it slowly gains strength against the the evil Empire. The newspaper also reported that the show is a basic cable TV series and that it will feature stormtroopers but not Jedi knights or Darth Vader. Lucas is currently casting for the series.

The fact that Laga'aia may be cast suggests that Lucas is considering shooting the show somewhere in Australia or New Zealand. Lucas shot parts of Episode II and III at Fox Studios in Sydney.

Laga'aia can be seen on the syndicated fantasy series Legend of the Seeker, which also shoots in New Zealand.

still dont understand how you can make this show without Jedi. Jedi is what makes star wars, star wars. This sounds boring. I give it 13 episodes till cancel

Mmmmm! Snobbish you are. Jedi star of show...mmmmmm! You know, I'd love to see Yoda barfing. "Mmm...guts unhappy....upchuck I must....must let the bile flow through me...become one with the yak!

jayhawks, look up "Star Wars Episode I: The College Years". There's plenty of Yoda-spewing, Jabba macking action.

There ARE'NT any Jedi.....the only two left are Yoda and Obi Wan! Unless you'd be content with watching Yoda eking out a lonely retirenment in the swamp or Obi Wan-dering the dessert by himself then a show just about Rebels vs. Stormtroopers will have to do.

By Justo at 6:17 PM ON 03/17/09

Well Han Solo is the coolest thing about Star Wars and he's no Jedi. But if this show isn't a helluva lot better than that crummy Clone Wars then I'll definitely pass

How can you have Star Wars without the Force or lightsabers? I might as well be watching star trek.

By BryanJ at 7:06 PM ON 03/17/09

Think of the original Star Wars...there were no proper Jedi in that either. Yes there were lightsabers, and an old has-been Jedi, but that's about it. The Force will no doubt be a large part of it, as will the occasional saber, but to say Star Wars wouldn't be any good without Jedi isn't really seeing the big picture. Bounty Hunters, Stormtroopers, the Empire at full strength, and the birth of the Rebellion? BRING IT ON!!!!!

By photoguy at 7:21 PM ON 03/17/09

George Lucas is a pale backwards reflection of himself. SW eps1-3 were boring atttempts at creating digital drama, and he failed miserably. He brought in great actors, and made them stand in front of bluescreens, spouting gibberish. He might as well stick to saturday morning cartoons. He should find someone from the novel universe, to run star wars productions. Tim Zahn comes to mind, as do others.

Clone Wars is on Cartoon Network boys and girls....For Boys and Girls! Not adult swim. I watch it every week with my son and find it fun and action packed. I rather he watched that then say Ed, Edd and Eddie.

By IsoTek at 7:51 PM ON 03/17/09

Meh....No thanks would rather have a THX1138 series.

This looks like a promising concept to me: the fact that there aren't jedi in the series doesn't strike me as a mistake, since part of the struggle in this part of the timeline is that there aren't any jedi who aren't in hiding (a la Yoda and Obi Wan), so the fledgling Rebel Alliance would have to figure out how to get along without one of the pillars the Old Republic depended upon. That seems quite "canon" to me. I'm excited to see the beginnings of the rebellion, which obviously had to get its start with a lot of regular, brave people and no supernatural assistance. So, no lightsabers--but still plenty of Y-Wings and X-Wings and all that, I'm sure. I'm looking forward to this!

I forget when this series is supposed to take place in the general timeline. But, even if it doesn't feature proper "Jedi", I wouldn't be surprised to find a character or two that are "Force-capable"...just not trained as Jedi.

By toots at 1:24 AM ON 03/18/09

Not every Jedi was killed during Order 66.
There would have to be other Jedi in hiding, other than Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda.

I'm sure at least one episode out of one hundred will have Jedi and Lightsaber action.

By TD-0013 at 7:16 AM ON 03/18/09

Thank the Maker there aren't any Jedi!!! Those religious nuts ruined the saga. One or two of them? Sure... it made sense, plus as it's been pointed out, after the purge, the only Jedi around would be Yoda, Vader, Palpy, and eventually Luke. Hopefully this series will take the chance and show the war from BOTH sides and show things from the Empire's side. But then, I'm biased.

By Imagica at 9:33 AM ON 03/18/09

Will we see some of the Emperor's Hand? Mara Jade is not the only one.

Also no Jedi does not mean we will not see other Force users that have had no formal training.

Will we be seeing the rise of Thrawn in this? The rise of Moff Tarkin? The rise of Baela Organa (will Jimmy Smits reprise his role?)?

Hmmmm sounds promising to me.

Since I saw a few comments that seemed unsure about the timeframe for the live series - it is set between eps III and IV. Lucas has said that he has envisioned it as a much darker take on the universe, and he hinted that bounty hunters would be the focal point of the series, not the rebellion, though I am sure we'll be seeing some of that too. He even went so far as to say that the show may end up on HBO or SHO because it will be a bit more PG-13.

And for those bashing the CW series - lighten up! It's a kids show, first of all. And 2nd, if you watch the show as I do, you know that it has gotten progressively darker and had much more action. Did you see the Mace Windu ep, when he gets medieval on some droids? Do you even know who Cad Bane is? Yeah, some of the dialogue is cheesy . . . ummm, have you watched ANY of the 6 SW films - most of that dialogue is pretty adolescent as well. George has never written good dialogue, with the exceptions being THX1138 and A.G.

Anyone remember "Shadows of The Empire", no jedi and no Han in the game and yet it was pretty good. I admit I didn't read the book so I may not have the full picture, but overall it seemed like a good story.

By RichG at 11:17 AM ON 03/18/09

Here's a minor continuity problem (and spoiler alert): In the second Coruscant Nights novel, Vader killed Typho when Typho tried to get revenge for Padme's death. Then again, it's not like Lucas actually reads the novels.

By Shane B at 1:39 PM ON 03/18/09

Why have aurra sing, quinlan vos, shaak ti, and some other jedi survive order 66 and then not use any of them. Also in revenge of the sith, the reason yoda and obi-wan went back to the temple was to warn the remaining jedi what was happening so they could go into hiding. And also wasnt vader hunting down the remaining jedi during this time between Ep 3 and 4. So why would there be no jedi or vader. Seems silly to say not a chance this.

By smallvices at 2:05 PM ON 03/18/09

How quickly so many forget.... According to the original Trilogy and the books and a lil' guy named George Lucas many many Jedi, force wielders, and Sith survived the purge. Vader's main day to day job was Bad@$$ Jedi Hunter. It took 20 + years for the SW Universe to get depleted on "trained" force wielders. As has been previously stated Jedi were scattered through out the galaxy like old west marshals. Not all missions required Stormtroopers. And not all Jedi supported the war or took an active part in it.
Let us think of a few who survived or even flourished under the Empire:
* Mara Jade 'The Emperor's Hand'
* Asajj Ventress
* Yoda
* Obi-Wan Kenobi
* Master Luminara Unduli
*There is even a new SW book series out now 'Coruscant Nights' telling the tale of a Jedi surviving and flourishing during the Empire's reign on Coruscant no less!
* and how many more can you think of?

But hopefully GL sticks to his word. Too often the books, comics, and last few movies used the Jedi/Sith as a crutch and focus of the galaxy when they only make up a small piece of it. Clone Wars does a good job of showing off the galaxy. Let's hope teh new series does as well.

By Artifex at 3:49 PM ON 03/18/09

No jedi left? Ha! These are comments from people who haven't read the books that follow episode 6. There are *tons* of jedi available for use in the series. All it would take is for Lucas to swallow his (considerable) pride and use something that was someone else's (likely superior) creation.

These extended universe authors, starting with the truly excellent Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn, realized what so many of you here have said, which is that Jedi are the best and most original part of the SW universe, and that universe is best when it's just crawling with Jedi.

By Artifex at 3:56 PM ON 03/18/09

Another thing:

Don't forget the Jedi that the Force Unleashed plotline revealed, and those that it killed. I won't post spoilers, but anyone who hasn't either played the game or picked up the novelization is missing out on some huge reveals that fall between episodes 3 and 4. Seriously, they should have made that into a film.

By Yook Moobo at 4:09 PM ON 03/18/09

There are more than just Yoda and Obiwan left...Jax Pavan, Dass Jenir just to name a few. They are all IN HIDING though. Running from Vader and the newly formed Empire. You'll hear about them and Vader in the show supposedly, but you'll never see'em.

By Yook Moobo at 7:08 PM ON 03/18/09

YES!!! RichG, I thought the same thing too. Typho is dead, although the series could take place before the CN Trilogy. How can GL ignore the EU? He's the one who allows these authors to expand on his creation in the first place, then he's gonna confuse things by not considering them if it is not part of "his vision".

By yougotatvinthere at 11:46 AM ON 03/22/09

I think it could be cool. I hope there is at least some bounty hunter stories, or at least some Boba fett in it. That might be pretty dope. Kinda dissapointed that there isn't any Vader though. I have enjoyed the Clone Wars series. I would like to see a series of maybe straight to dvd computer animated movies based on some of the books. Like maybe Shadows of the Empire. I think that would be kinda cool.

By lastlaugh:} at 11:28 PM ON 04/13/09

Have you forgotten that the Force underpins all matter , all actions both good and bad in Lucasverse? therefore, Jedi or not , some indications of it's workings surely must come into any new offering unless this is truly just to be another action series, in which case I'd be happier wandering in the desert myself than watching it.
