A few weeks back, TV writer/producer Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls) fired up Trekkers with his suggestion for reviving Star Trek as a TV show, complete with 1960s color and attitude.
We caught up recently with Fuller to press him on the idea, which at this point remains his own personal fever dream. The following Q&A features an edited excerpt of our exclusive interview with Fuller about all things Trek. J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie, meanwhile, opens on May 8.
You recently expressed the desire to relaunch a Star Trek TV series in the same vein as the 1960s original series. Have you spoken to anyone about that?
Fuller: It's sort of a pipe dream, like, "Wouldn't it be great if I could do that?" Those decisions are held by other people, so I've just said I'd love to do it. It's something that was very pivotal to my childhood and growing up. There's nothing official.
Given the upcoming Star Trek movie reboot, have you discussed your ideas with director J.J. Abrams?
Fuller: Not in any official capacity. I've had interactions with him, and he's a really nice guy. I would love to work with him in any capacity, because I'm a big fan of his work. I think they are concentrating on the feature right now, but if a television franchise came to fruition, I'm sure J.J. would be involved in some capacity, and I'd love to be involved as well. It's not like "Me! Me! I want to do my idea!" I'd love to do what Ron Moore did with Battlestar Galactica, which is redefine an existing franchise, knock down certain barriers of perception and make it accessible to a broader audience.
Do you have particular storylines you'd like to focus on?
Fuller: Oh, yeah, I have a very specific take I'd like to do, but no official conversations have been had. I know CBS owns the rights to the television series. Everyone will probably want to see how the movie does, and I think it's gonna be huge. I'm just lighting a little Star Trek candle in the window and hope it comes to pass one day.
You always have strong ideas about casting. Purely speculating, which actors are on your wish list for the leads?
Fuller: I want Rosario Dawson. She would be an interesting lead that wouldn't have to be a captain. I just find her infectiously charming.
How about for the Captain Kirk archetype?
Fuller: I don't know. The captains are always so tough in terms of who they would be. There's ethnicity, gender and all these factors to consider. Angela Bassett as a captain would rock my boat, though.

" I'd love to do what Ron Moore did with Battlestar Galactica, which is redefine an existing franchise, knock down certain barriers of perception and make it accessible to a broader audience."
I personally did not care for Battlestar 09. If he wants to do another 90210 in space clone I won't be a viewer.

"Trekkers" is the stupidest handle imaginable- it implies that they DO something. "Trekkie" makes more sense.
By Gumbercules at 2:59 PM ON 04/14/09
If the movie does big box office, I have to imagine they'd think about launching a new TV series, although doing it with the actors from the film would probably be impossible. Hm...
By dm0101 at 3:05 PM ON 04/14/09
Just don't call it "Star Trek: The Captain Kirk Chronicles."
By Software Diplomat at 3:23 PM ON 04/14/09
Lets try something. This time, try not taking it so serious. Jim, Spock, and McCoy didn't have sticks up their butts in the original. EVERY SINGLE STAR TREK since has had this problem. That should be fixed.
By ctmm at 3:41 PM ON 04/14/09
Bring back Enterprise Series with same cast been waching it on scifi channel it agood show that deserves better!!!
By PeterVA at 4:00 PM ON 04/14/09
Absolutely NOT! I love Bryan Fuller's work, and I absolutely LOVED what Ron Moore did with Battlestar Galactica, but this is going too far.
If he wanted to create a new series with a completely different set of characters on a different ship, I'd be all for it, but not rebooting the TV version of the original show. It's just wrong.
By Pixel at 4:21 PM ON 04/14/09
I'm quite honestly awaiting the new film with profound indifference - I'm hoping, very much, to enjoy it, but even if I do, it's not Star Trek - it's just something that has that name, but it's not the original show that I've lived with for, effectively, my whole life.
And the correct term is Trekker, as was established almost forty years ago. "Trekkie" was used as a pejorative term for fans who want to associate themselves with something for their own gain, coming as it does from the term "groupie," rather than those who love and appreciate it for what it actually is.
Having loved and appreciated both Wonderfalls and Pusing Daisies - and the new Battlestar - I would be very interested to see what either Bryan or Ron would do with "carte blanche" to make a new Trek show.
But it still wouldn't be Star Trek...
By LordTalon69 at 4:52 PM ON 04/14/09
I agree with the guy who mentioned enterprise. I loved that series. The guy from quantum leap made a great captain. I loved the ships doctor and the vulcan. The opening credits and video are emotional and inspiring. I hated that they canceled it way too soon.
By gorehound696 at 5:02 PM ON 04/14/09
I also enjoyed Enterprise at least most of the episodes. The finale was the worst finale I ever sat thru for any show I have watched.
I would hope that no one "REBOOTS" the old 60's Star Trek.
Be original if you like TREK then use your brain and come up with a whole new cool idea for a show.
LEAVE THE OLD ONE ALONE !!!

Voiceover WORK, not word. Sorry.

Am I the only one who thinks "Star Trek: 90210" is actually kind of a cool idea?
By Shadowking at 5:35 PM ON 04/14/09
Personally I'd love to see them go one of two different ways with a new Star Trek show I'm sure when I say these two directions people will be up in arms but oh well here they are.
A Starfleet Academy setting, comeplete from year one to advanced training classes, follow a group of Cadets through these years and watch them shape from young kids with a dream to the graduating class thats Starfleets new hope.
The Second would be a civilian take of the Star Trek Universe either a colony type setting or a space freighter crew working the trade lanes in a galaxy rife with danger and intreague.
Well there you go flame on if you want. :)
By ecgordon at 5:37 PM ON 04/14/09
I love his idea of using Dawson and Bassett, two of the best actresses working today. Dawson as a captain and Bassett as an admiral would work fine.
By MetalMan at 5:42 PM ON 04/14/09
Actually, "Trekkie" was the original term used to describe those enamored with the franchise. "Trekker" came to describe the fanboys around The Next Generation and series following it.
By budgethero at 5:43 PM ON 04/14/09
i knew talk of another trek would come up sooner or later but really, i was hoping for later. i really really, really really, really really really really really think everyone, EVERYONE, needs a good long trek break. just a decade or a little more. it - did- Wonders for DrWho. please, let's not get reckless.
and if u *must*, *@absolutely MUST@* do a trek show, please dont do a reboot remake shlam'a lam'a ding-dong as done by Moore (im NOT saying BSG is bad). u dont have to make it for trek cultists, but not for every Tom, Becky, and Harry. and not with drama that requires prozac.
[and Mr Fuller, please dont give up on ur original ideas. pllllease dont!]
as for fan names, im a trek fan (if there's something wrong with that title, i dont want to be right). but as, really, a Scaper, we "do" about as much as a trek fan. im.. not sure wat u mean by that. but to maintain careful political correctness, ill stick with trek fan. it's a bit long, but a debate about a title is apparently longer.
By Spaceman Spiff at 5:45 PM ON 04/14/09
I absolutely HATED the new Battlestar galactica. It was like a big soap opera with weird spirtual overtones.
If they do that to Trek I also will not watch. I trried to watch the new BSG and could never ghet through an entire episode.
By Rafe at 5:49 PM ON 04/14/09
Bassett would tear up the screen! I still think Bassett would have been the perfect actress to play the X-Men's Storm.
Unfortunately, Bassett's film career is pretty typical for a woman of color of her generation: Talented but not able to find decent work, which led her to find roles on TV, like on E.R., where an ensemble cast will allow for women of color. It's kinda sad that the only lead role in a film that Bassett could get recently was in a Tyler Perry movie.
Dawson, Alba, Berry, and Lopez are the only women of color that seem to work regularly in higher quality film roles. Taraji P. Henson seems to have made a bit of move upwards.
By unicron26 at 5:54 PM ON 04/14/09
No i say make a star trek titan series it will have everyone from TNG to VOY and if there smart they wont screw it up how hard is it to take a series of only five books and make it into a show. The first book alone can make a two or three episode story arc
By Darth Paul at 5:58 PM ON 04/14/09
bringing back the Idea, is good, but the last time it was ugly it did not have very much vision if any. it doesn't have to be new to be good, but does have to good. You have so many options, here it is not funny.. but look at the idea with some vision, and not just as retreaded series.
By M at 6:00 PM ON 04/14/09
Angela Bassett is an absolutely brilliant actress! She'd be amazing!
By Richard Rost at 6:02 PM ON 04/14/09
Here's my idea for the next TREK TV series...
Don't have a regular cast of the same characters every week. Instead, run individual short-stories each week in totally separate areas of the Trek-Verse.
One week you might have a story about some ship that was in the battle at Wolf-359. The next week it might be a Kirk-era ship that encounters some baddie. The next week might even be centered on a pre-Empire Klingon episode.
The sky is the limit! You don't need to have the same cast members. You won't get in a rut from week to week. You can cover any ship, any time period, any location. You can have big-name guest stars on the show, or complete unknowns.
I would have suggested calling it "Star Trek Universe", but that was before the new Stargate series was named.
Anyhow, that's what I would do. I think fans would LOVE it.
By Highway Man at 6:11 PM ON 04/14/09
They need to look forward and not back. Trying to recapture the glory days of the Kirk era is so lame. If they make a new series ever then it should be set some time in the 25th century.

By Gilveron at 6:30 PM ON 04/14/09
knock down certain barriers of perception and make it accessible to a broader audience."
This statement scares the hell out of me. The reason what Ron Moore did with Galactica worked was he actually made the show stick to its original premise, following a group of survivors of a genocide in their search for survival. Not a very happy set up. Star Trek, however, has ALWAYS been about showing a bright and positive view of the future, which was what distinguished it from all other science fiction (at least at its time), which was generally dark and pessimistic. To mess with that central premise, to change Star Trek's vision of unabashed humanism and positivity, in the name of broadening its audience would be just wrong. It would cease to be Star Trek.
Having said that, if Mr. Fuller remained true to that central premise, but instituted some of Ron Moore's more realistic approach to character, acting style, and the scientific elements of the show, cut out the technobabble, and focused on the characters' relationships like the original series did, then I would watch.
By scoob958 at 6:40 PM ON 04/14/09
How about a comedy series starring Quark, Rom, and Nog. Have it on the Ferengi homeworld.
By Darsan54 at 6:48 PM ON 04/14/09
I would love to see the Star Trek series "rebooted" and yes, along the lines Ron Moore did with BSG. I thought it was terrible science fiction, but it did have a lot of emotional impact and the depth of the ideas was very interesting. Do the same with ST and I would watch.
By Captain Pierce at 6:55 PM ON 04/14/09
Didn't Bryan Fuller work on Voyager at one point? That alone should disqualify him from ever working on a Star Trek show again...
By Locke at 7:03 PM ON 04/14/09
I would like to see the Star Trek universe from the POV of regular people instead of Starfleet. We've seen Starfleet for 40 years but what about the people Starfleet personnel leave behind "To Boldy Go Where No Man Has Gone Before"? I would love more of what was hinted at with Picard's brother, Sisko's father, and Tuvok's wife.
If they must focus on Starfleet, how about focusing on a character like Captain Garth before he went insane? According to Kirk, the books about his career was "required reading" at Starfleet Academy. It would be interesting to see Starfleet in the days after Jonathan Archer but before Christopher Pike.
Or, you know what would be really cool would be a series about Christopher Pike's days as Captain of the Enterprise. That would fit in with recreating the tone of the original and would tie in with the movie quite nicely. Spock and Pike have already been cast. The pilot already exists and would just need to be remade with contemporary dialogue and effects. A series featuring Pike would also add a tragic dimension rarely seen in Trek, we all know how he turns out in the Menagerie.
By Gill Avila at 7:06 PM ON 04/14/09
Why not an anthology series called "Star Fleet?" It could involve different ships and different characters every week. There are lots of classic SF stories that could be adapted.

if they wanna do a new series then they should do it as an anthology series where you dont need the same cast or ship for every episode and can flesh out the univers more that way, possibly even jumping between time periods to bring back actors from older series for new stories

By AdmNAismith at 7:32 PM ON 04/14/09
No Rebooting. BSG was about the only reboot/remake that worked.
There is plenty to do in exploring life in the Federation (and beyond) in the aftermath of the Borg and Dominion wars, and the corruption alluded to in TNG and 'Insurrection'. We DO NOT need to retread material we have already seen. Abrams movie already too close to that.
By Zac Wildstar at 7:46 PM ON 04/14/09

Hey MC2714! That's exactly the point, Trekkers *do something*! We're not the slack overfed, underlaid greasy leaping gnomes you see at Con prancing in their off-color, ill-fitting 'uniforms'. We're the ones who organize the Cons, Events and Fund-raisers. We're the ones who talked Denise Crosby into auctioning off her panties to raise money for cancer research. We're the ones who are employed at Langley, JPL and NG.
Don't ever confuse us with Trekkies.
By Linnemir at 10:37 PM ON 04/14/09
Trek was always about the optimistic. About a world that had overcome its own prejudices and was trying to be free and equal for all.
There's no need to "reboot" a damn thing. Any new series or spin-offs should respect Rodenberry's vision of the world/galaxy he created. Letting someone like Moore 'reinvent' it would be both unnecessary and painful. The setting is fine as it is. There are many new stories to tell. But for gods' sake, don't bastardize the world to pander to the 'imagination' of a dope who doesn't understand what the word continuity means, much less how to use it in a series (much less a sentence!)

A reboot TV series could be really bad - after all Hollywood seems completely incapable of producing anything truly new or original, so how can a reboot of old Trek be any good? They've already done a remastered version of the original series so what would be the point of remaking it from scratch?
By MissF at 11:33 PM ON 04/14/09
A new series???? Are you kidding me? The world is Star Trek series'ed OUT. I love Star Trek, but the money grab is TEDIOUS!!! I felt sorry for the last series because by that time the world had had enough of it. Enterprise would have had great promise if the franchise hadn't bled itself out already. For THE LOVE OF GOD, Give the world and our wallets a break for a while.

Meld Star Trek with superheros -- Reboot TNG in the vain of the Justice League, making Picard more like Superman, Data like Batman, Riker like Wonder Woman (you want it and you know it), Troy -- The Martian Manhunter, Crusher -- Aquaman, LaForge -- Green Lateran and Worf -- Flash, because that would be fun to watch. Just think, TNG vs. Starro.
By stealthgear at 12:32 AM ON 04/15/09
DON'T DO.
By Trekker61 at 1:21 AM ON 04/15/09
Star Trek, for me, was similar to many of the comments above, some Great, some not so ...
I've enjoyed ST again since TNG. I thought Trek should bring in newer, younger actors and they did this with TNG. Kind of like "Dr. Who" regenerating.
And Trek is about $$ money for Paramount, no doubt. I was VERY upset that the movie was basicly THERE in Dec. '08, but the studio sat on it until this May, --- to make more $$$ money.
The BSG reboot was a Great 2 part special or mini series on SciFi channel, but it got too popular and just went on and on. Like Trek, there were some Awesome episodes and some fillers. For me, the original BSG was Star Wars on TV, until the Exec. Producer started to get heavily into Mormon, LDS, theology, ie. Poly-theism, the dark forces, etc. [I grew up in Salt Lake City, and am Not Mormon].
I liked most Trek, tho I have not seen much of DS9. I just got bored on the space station and didn't see the years they got a ship.
Enterprise was "scrappy" I liked the pre- transporter technology and the grappling hook before the tractor beam. I loved the humans coming between the Vulcans and the Andorians, and the humans going around the Vulcans when they couldn't go through them. BUT ... BUT .. when they had the Borg episode ! .. I said that was enough ! I like Archer's dog and wondering if T'Pal was THE T'Pal from Amok Time in TOS.
Voyager was fun, even with the big breasted 7of9 for the teenagers. The last few episodes and the last, were awesome !
So, if you bring back ST TOS, in the form of a series, I'd update everything within reason. Don't spend too much so it's the most expensive series to produce ! Maybe re-write and update some of the episodes, that may be cool. Put a different emphasis or more depth into them. Make each episode 90 min or 2 hours.
I'm thinking I'm going to enjoy the new movie .. but I think it takes place in an alternative universe or another reality. ( i.e. "Mirror, Mirror" ? ) It may not be THE Kirk and Spock from TOS, but a version of them. I hope I still enjoy the movie.
Trek on TV .. Sure .. if it would be fun .. but it has to be in the same parameters of Warp Speed not greater than 8 or 9, no Transwarp, no borg .. maybe more nasty Romulans, no elements later introduced in TNG , DS9 or Voyager.
Something like the original, but new and refreshing ! :-)
By Bryant Burnette at 1:53 AM ON 04/15/09
You folks who actually want to be called "Trekker" instead of "Trekkie" because you feel the latter is a pejorative are sad, sad people.
By LandShark at 2:03 AM ON 04/15/09
I think the best thing they could do for a Star Trek series would be to adapt New Frontier for TV. For anyone who doesn't know what New Frontier is, it's a series of books set in the TNG timeline, but set in a previously unexplored region of space known by the Federation as Sector 221-G. The captain is reminiscent of Kirk, and the whole tone of the series is just brash and unrelenting.
By Alex at 7:54 AM ON 04/15/09
I've no objection to a new Trek TV series, but not yet. Fuller has forgotten that the franchise completely burned itself out on TV only 4 years ago. Doctor Who burned out in 1989 and it took 16 years before a viable revival on TV took place. I don't believe there should be another attempt at a Star Trek TV series for at least another decade. If Fuller wants to make his mark on Trek he should be lobbying to do Star Trek 12 or 13 for the big screen.
By No More Fuller at 8:16 AM ON 04/15/09
Fuller is ABSOLUTELY the wrong guy for rebooting Star Trek. Voyager was a complete travesty and is often cited as the worst of the five series, alongside Enterprise. To bring back anyone who worked on that series would be idiotic
By Astroman77 at 8:49 AM ON 04/15/09
Since they are dealing with TOS in the movies, I would hope a new series would take place in the post-Nemesis timeframe. Perhaps they should jump ahead another 100 years. New characters, new tech, new politics.
By Nid at 9:53 AM ON 04/15/09
Dear Treksters,
I think that Star Trek as a franchise has given viewers an opportunity to see a myth grow into a vast universe, with a timeline and even galactic borders. This has probably been done the most by any fictional property. To even think to make another TV series sounds exhausting for viewers to experience, because they are not just sitting back and enjoying the ride; they are limiting themselves with what, where and when the story should go. This universe clearly has reached its limitations of time and space so it is now more like looking for a needle in a gigantic haystack. Maybe that is the key problem that causes everyone to agree or disagree.
Stick to the movies. It gives the story a further opportunity to ripen but not spoil. It is also a crapshoot - look at Star Wars, where the release of the prequels was 50/50. Frankly I am done with Star Wars. And by the way, why even bother to visit Caprica, when the whole Battlestar Saga has basically fizzled out and can no longer do any more jumps? Point it towards the sun and let it sink in!
I did like the idea of a series with different stories, different characters, but it has gotten to the point where my own interest would be to see the ships, the places they go, the battles, and not so much the people. It sounds more like part cartoon, less tv series and a little video game like. I love space ships!
But aren't there other stories, other science fiction books out there that you would like to see on the screen? One book that I remember from my childhood was an exploration opera called Endless Voyage (1975). At first it didn't seem like much, but it was a trilogy of sorts, all in one book. It was by Marion Zimmer Bradley - a pretty good book!
So - Good luck to JJ Abrams Star Trek; no more TV series, and let's look out in the final frontier for other science fiction legends to dork out over. Amen.

Wasn't ENTERPRISE supposed to be this?? But they put them in jumpsuits! And we know any show in jumpsuits fails!!!!
ENTERPRISE SHOULD have been this! Original Enterprise, Capt Pike? Young Spock? Oh yeah!!!! Rick Berman needed his jumpsuits, though!!!
By Kyle Nin at 12:17 PM ON 04/15/09
I'd rather have "Enterprise" back, but I guess it's been too long for that. Why, oh why, did it not get a fifth season? After the spectacular fourth season (besides the finale), a fifth season would have been unbelievably great!
By zano at 1:19 PM ON 04/15/09
My opinion is that Paramount missed the boat when they came out with ENTERPRISE, which was a crappy series....The new STAR TREK that they should have come out with should have been STAR TREK: EXCELSIOR with George Takei as Captain Sulu. If they would have done this they could have had a series as good as TOS and ST:NG and not have lost the franchise as they did with ENTERPRISE! I'd still like to see EXCELSIOR, but It's probably too late....Takei is getting old.
Side note....Does anyone watch STAR TREK, NEW VOYAGES? It's the original series reboot that everyone is talking about, plus they did give us a little bit of Sulu as Captain of the Excelsior and I think you could see how great that could have been!
By ctmm at 4:28 PM ON 04/15/09
I would like to see Enterprise series brought back to
life there is alot of story left out of it ,showing how they
get from Archer to the signing of the federation. The series was not aloud to show all that before it was cut short on a tv station that was not well marketed
hell I had never heard of the station until after the show was canceled .

Has anyone watched Star Trek: New Voyages / PHASE2 ? It's an award winning Internet webasode that is finishing the 4 year if the Enterprise's 5 year mission. It is also bridging the gap between TOS and the first motion picture. It's produced by The Cawley Entertainment company and shot at retro Film Studios in Upstate New York. Go to www.startrekphase2 for more information. ENJOY TREKKERS!!!!
By Vger at 5:26 PM ON 04/16/09
First of all, I think they should let the series rest a couple of years more.
Then when they come with a new series (because there will be a new series for sure!), it should have a softer flavor than DS9. Actually, a flavor similar to TNG seasons 1-2 (lighter, even naïve).
Some ideas for new shows:
• Star Trek: Section 31. Here they can jump to different times and places of the Trek-vers.
• Star Trek: Travelers. Focused in the stories of the “travelers”. Again, wide open to use any time or place.
Finally, although I have said that the series have to take a rest, I think they can experiment with cartoons!!! Why not?
Just food for thoughts!

Get a new cast and everything. Don't make it like the Original Series at all except for the "color and attitude."

First and foremost, I enjoy star trek just like all trek fans of all ages and greed. I enjoyed them all. Including Enterprise. Its just good to see the spirit of trek, besides the “let it die comments“, alive and kicking.
But I’ve heard all the story ideas before, except the traveller idea , that’s . . . different. By what I’ve read so far everyone has their own favourite crew, favourite era and their own ideas on the variations of trek.
The idea “Star Trek: Chronicles” , not my idea but a good one. It covers all and possible avenues and can be segmented into chapters and explored by cadets at Starfleet Academy. Or through mission logs for Captains seeking advice.
Follow the history of Captains old , new and legendary. Show how past mistakes made way for the prime directive. I’ll fated missions that are now history. Maybe venture into the criminal and spy networks in the trek verse. Rule breakers and tyrants? Section 31? Hired mercenaries? Orion Syndicate? The list goes on.
The one thing I do know . . .Trek isn’t died . . .Not yet anyway. Whatever form in comes in next, I stand ready and waiting.

Now that I have taken the time to thoroughly look through all of the comments, I have something to say...
First. Star Trek isn't dead, it will never die as long as the fan base still exists, which it still does.
Second: I HATE HATE HATE prequels, and I hate stupid Hollywood reinventions of classical material that CANNOT possibly be any more elaborated as is. As for prequels, I think that in certain circumstances it can be allowed, but only once, AFTER you have established the ultimate fate of the Star Trek universe.
Third: Too many loose ends! What is the ultimate fate of the borg? Species 8472? Q? The Klingons? The Romulans? Bajor? Cardassia? The Dominion? The FREAKING FEDERATION! THE REST OF THE STINKIN' GALAXY?! None of this was answered which is what really pissed me off about Enterprise. How could they just start at the beginning and fill in the blanks without even answering any of these things? How could they just "reboot" the original series and call it a TV series? Stupid Stupid STUPID.
Fourth: What I would like to see in a new series would be the concept of exploration like TNG, and the Federation's attempt to cope new developing situations. How about defeating the Borg once-and-for-all with new technology, and dealing with species 8472?
How about exploring new galaxies in the LATE 24th century with loads of recurring star trek characters from the previous series like picard, sisko and janeway? I would also like to see the same level social interactions like in DS9. I remember DS9 had like three recurring villains: Dukat, Kai Winn and Weyoun. All slippery evil people that you just LOVE to hate. I liked that alot, it kept things interesting.
All in all, I just don't want to see them screw up with another piece of nonsensical embarrassment like Enterprise again... I want to see some serious inter-social depth with good exploration POST NEMESIS... Its sooo easy. Just don't try so hard to make it appealing to every cheap storyline imbecile, and keep true to the fan base. Thats all I gotta say...

Here's a concept...let's go into the future rather then consistently venture into the past? Let's try going into the future past TNG.

In the words of the living GOD, Williams Shatner...."Will ya get a life people...it's just a TV show!" I've heard nothing but exceptional things about the new movie. I think many Trek fans look at this the wrong way. Some things are so fun and great that they deserve to be cared for and reinvigorated from time to time. Star Trek has become an institution in this country...it is part of the American mythos. But everything and I do mean EVERYTHING needs fresh coat of paint every now and then. In fact, during an interview, Leonard Nimoy stated that Gene Rodenberry actually hoped that someone would pick up the reigns and do something with it for a new generation.

I was a bit leary going into the movie, but at the very least I was pleased. The first few scenes had me ready to walk out of the theater, but it definately got better as it went along. I really enjoyed the interplay between the new cast by the end of the film.
Say what you want about BSG2009, but that series was way to dark for my liking and didn't need a so called reboot(waiting for all the insults and name calling to start).
I grew up on the TOS and one of my big problems with the original series was the fact that they just jumped into it instead of starting from the beginning.
I am so torn, with this alternate reality version of this, because although it would really screw up some of the continuity of the original series(ST Enterprise was a prime example of how NOT to try and go back without a better backstory. it was on, but they got way to preachy for my liking.
But his was an interesting take on an alternate reality direction, therefore it allows for some new directions with the story and much continuity issues could be explained by the alternate reality angle. But by the end of the movie I enjoyed so many of the interactions between the newer, younger versions of the original characters that it could really be a good series and leave lots of room for alot of different directions and characters. I thought Simon Pegg as Scotty was Hilarious. The only 2 characters I really had issues with was Chris PIne, just didn't strike me right for Kirk an the Uhura Character(not the Acctress). Although I must say I was a bit how shall I say ready to wretch by the love interest between her and Spock and I think maybe it was more the direction of the character more than the relationship issue.
I would love to see them get a new series going with this cast and use the end title music rather than the BS they tried in ST Enterprise. I know that series was gonna be trouble when they tried a newer approach to the music instead of keeping it timeless.

I loved that movie. I am hoping big time they decide to create a new tv series using that same cast that was used in the movie. I think they got the prefect mix for the leading cast for that new series.

mwhite212, "In the words of the living GOD, Williams Shatner...."
That's a common misattribution as Shatner was merely playing a caricature of himself as written by the SNL writer Robert Smigel who should be the one properly attributed in quoting the line as Shatner did not improvise or otherwise contribute to it's creation.

They will never use the same cast. Star Trek (2009) is a success. It would be too expensive.

Heres an Idea for a new series:
Have some Federation starship thrown Into an alternate universe where they could fight the Federation which Is now the enemy, new enimies could appear, Klingons could be the enemy again, the Ideas are endless because its an alternate universe

I'd hate it if the Star Trek franchise went back in time again, that's the number one reason i didn't enjoy the newest series. Moving forward provides new technologies, a continuation of a plot line, seeing how and where the previous generations actions have effected the universe, new species, and not having to play off old standards. Yes, they could easily revamp the series like battle star galactica did, which would be an improvement. one thing i always saw missing was that yes, star trek tackled a difficult topic on equality especially in the '60s, but never any others, marriages failing, homosexuality, or any really deep and current problems that we're dealing with now. Keep the series up to date. The movie was interesting, i liked it, but do i want another Kirk/Spock series? No. How about a captain that's not a human for once? Or a mostly non-human crew. I find it hard to believe that the Federation with its hundreds of planets would be comprised mostly of humans, which is how the series thus far have handled it. I've been raised on star trek since I was an infant, and I can say easily that my least favorite of the series are the over-acted/over-dramatic 60's where there was no science involved and no developing plot, just random occurrences and jumping from adventure to adventure. DS9 was a failure until the war with the Dominion because that's all they tried to do with the series. Let's hope that if there's a new series they learn from those mistakes.

Please no revival! Just make a new series, with new characters and a new setting, like e.g. Voyager, DS9 or Enterprise. They were all great!
So why should there be suddenly a revival of the old characters. There is no reason for that. And it doesn't seem very imaginative. Please don't do this. The Star Trek universe is so flexible. Plots and new settings can be generated almost everywhere. Please don't recycle old characters with new actors!

"I agree with the guy who mentioned enterprise. I loved that series. The guy from quantum leap made a great captain. I loved the ships doctor and the vulcan. The opening credits and video are emotional and inspiring. I hated that they canceled it way too soon.".................
Huh? After they INVENTED history and blew time line technology all to hell. Like NOT! The series was good in story and actors but they blew it in canon time limes worse than the whole franchise together!

well, because of the time travel and subsequent alternate time line created by the movie, it is totally possible to create a NEW version of the original Star Trek. including original characters. Spok ( the old guy) has all the latest technology in his head and can propel the show beyond the barriers of " the past didn't have that technology" thereby allowing the show to appeal to those true Trekkies who just happen to love the Science part of Sci-fi just as much as the "not so fictitious" fiction,
I welcome your comments

I think that a Star Trek excelsior might be a very good idea, to know how Sulu came to be Captain and his adventures.... :-)
WOW its nice to dream !!!

I'd love a new series in the future AFTER Voyager. I didn't enjoy Enterprise without all of the technology. It was too boring. Give me a series set further into the future with new technologies and more aliens. I LOVED Voyager for all the different species they encountered and I have been waiting, hoping Enterprise would finish and be replaced by something more exciting. I really hope they make a new series soon

I wouldnt mind seeing a reboot of the tv series, though maybe put the plot on a different ship! Like the Excalibur? It was an important ship during that time period, and it gets its own book series too.
