Aliens vs. Predator, Star Trek: Nemesis, The Matrix Revolutions. Admit it, we've all had our hearts broken by a string of crappy sequels and spinoffs.
But we have also harbored hope that someone, somewhere would craft a real sequel to our favorite movies, something that raises them to another level while honoring the originals in the telling. These are the sci-fi sequels we'd REALLY like to see, with posters created by artist Chris Kalb, after the jump. (Click on the images for larger versions.)
Aliens: The Colony
What It Is: The Alien franchise returns to the scene of its most successful outings—planetoid LV-426. We see the colonists of Hanley's Hope, including Newt's family, as they fight for survival while elements of the Weyland-Yutani Corp. seek to exploit the xenomorphs in the derelict alien ship for their own ends.
Why We Want It: Depending on your opinion of Alien 3, it's been either 23 or 17 years since someone's told a compelling story in the universe Ridley Scott created with his 1979 film. The time is ripe for it to be reclaimed from crappy vs. Predator movies and comic books.
Who Could Do It: The key here is to rescue the aliens from the PG-13 action shlockfests in which they've appeared recently, and to make them grotesque and SCARY again. Swedish director Tomas Alfredson, whose Let the Right One In is one of the creepier films of the past year, could really bring across the dread of an isolated colony being eaten from the inside.
Star Trek: Excelsior
What It Is: Being the story of Capt. Hikaru Sulu in his command of the Federation starship U.S.S. Excelsior, and the adventures he found during that tenure. Also, a reminder that there are great characters in Gene Roddenberry's universe other than Kirk and Spock.
Why We Want It: George Takei! Who DOESN'T love George Takei? The veteran actor has shown in his role on Heroes that he still has the chops, and the appearance of Sulu as captain of the Excelsior in Star Trek VI was a great moment that left viewers wanting more.
Who Could Do It: George Takei. All due respect to John Cho, who's playing Sulu in the new Star Trek, but for a starship captain, we can accept no one besides the original. And we'd give Battlestar Galactica mastermind Ronald D. Moore a chance to return to the Star Trek fold, a little older, a little wiser and with the success of BSG to buoy him.
The Matrix 1.0
What It Is: The Animatrix filled in the backstory about the rise of the Machines in the Matrix universe. The Matrix 1.0 would take audiences through the Machines' first attempt to enslave humanity in their own minds, and the Oracle-led conspiracy that led to the initial human resistance and the creation of The One.
Why We Want It: You may feel, as most do, that the Matrix series went off the rails in its second two films, but the first remains a classic that holds up to repeat viewing today. The creation of the Matrix is one of the great unexplored elements of the franchise, with lots of thematic room to portray the Machines' motivations and the initial discovery of certain ... key anomalies.
Who Could Do It: We want a producer on hand who could rein in the visionary Wachowski brothers and remind them that philosophy is good as long as it's leavened with generous helpings of action and wire-fu—someone like Christopher Nolan, who's shown great aptitude at combining thought and action.
Serenity 2: The Alliance Strikes Back
What It Is: The sequel picks up the story after the Alliance's evildoing has been revealed and depicts the Browncoats' final rebellion against the cynical galactic empire, Mal Reynolds' reconciliation with his past and River Tam's war on the system that created her. And we need to see Mal and Inara finally get together.
Why We Want It: Serenity left the door open for a return to the universe populated by such awesome characters as Mal, River, Jayne and Kaylee. A sequel would bring closure and open the 'Verse to more stories about the intrepid crew.
Who Could Do It: We want everyone involved in the original show and movie back for Serenity 2. Joss Whedon must write and direct. Nathan Fillion must star. Adam Baldwin must wear a stupid hat.
Star Wars: Episode VII—Knights of the New Republic
What It Is: Episode VII moves the story of the original trilogy forward, unspooling a new space fantasy about an older Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Leia Organa—and their offspring—as they shape a new order in that galaxy far, far away. Key expanded universe characters such as Mara Jade, Jacen Solo and Ben Skywalker join a cast we already know and love, taking on the warlike Yuuzhan Vong.
Why We Want It: Because we've had it with the Clone Wars. Because, despite the fact that a great deal of it is crap, the expanded universe books and comics have set a fairly intriguing path for the franchise's iconic characters and provided an enemy that might actually, you know, pose a threat (seriously, they killed Chewbacca).
Who Could Do It: While it'd be impossible to divorce him from the proceedings completely, George Lucas must be kept as far away from this film as possible; give him an honorary title and something shiny to play with, and instead hire filmmakers who will bring a fresh but respectful perspective to the material. Someone like Peter Jackson has already demonstrated an ability to handle both the logistics of an epic and the expectations of a million fanboys.

While the Browncoat in me would love to see another Serenity movie, I would prefer to contiune Firefly the series. This would allow Whedon to pay a bit for the unfair killing of Shepard Book and Wash and bring them back for the show.
If they do another movie, don't let Whedon kill anyone else except for Inara, maybe... since he killed Wash, Zoe and Mal can get together (since their bond is stronger then Mal wanting to get behind Inara's veils)
And more Kaylee :)
By dakalmog at 9:45 AM ON 04/17/09
Oh. My. God. I can't believe someone actually spent time on this, and that SCI FI has published it. Why don't you spend your spare time working in a homeless shelter or something more useful? I refuse to believe that anyone actually got paid to do this. This is the nadir of so-called "news" coverage on this site.
By Linas K at 9:46 AM ON 04/17/09
Who is this "we" you speak of? The Clone Wars is a much better show (with the exception of the Jar-Jar episodes) than most give it credit for. Look past the fact that it is primarily marketed toward kids and you will find a thought provoking and amazing addition to the Star Wars universe.
In addition to great storytelling it is one of the greatest things to happen to me as a parent. I would look forward to watching Clone Wars with my boys at some point during the week, plus I had the bonus of taking my oldest to see Star Wars on the big screen which I thought I'd never get to do.
I'm sorry to hear that you 've had it with Clone Wars and the EU, but you are not a "we" and do not speak out for the majority of us.
By blackwolf69 at 9:47 AM ON 04/17/09
I would love to see a Star Wars movie Based on that series of Books Against the Yuuzhan Vong even the alien movie would be cool I did like the first alien vs predator movie

Linas: And neither do you...
By Chris at 9:53 AM ON 04/17/09
Getting Zoe and Mal together just seems totally wrong to me. They are like brother and sister. Besides, I love the Mal and Inara relationship.
I liked the fact that Joss killed off a couple of characters. It made the end of Serenity so suspenseful because I was beginning to think that nobody would survive. In most shows and movies, you know the stars will survive. It's called drama, and that's why Joss did it.
By Marillion at 9:53 AM ON 04/17/09
And speaking of Kaylee.. Why wasn't she on the poster??
By Firell at 9:59 AM ON 04/17/09
Kaylee must have been busy in the engine room. Simon must be helping her.
By Giavs at 10:00 AM ON 04/17/09
@dakalmog: Lighten up....watch some wrestling and relax....
Anyway...as all of the possiblities I see above, Only the Matrix and Serenity have a possiblity of becoming a reality. The others are too large of a fanchise to deviate from their Corporate courses. And of the two, only Serenity has a large enough of a following to push this ieda to the production table with a garunteed income base.
So yea...Serenity II....and that poster sure looks pretty, don't it?
By msk417 at 10:09 AM ON 04/17/09
The only one that interests me is Serenity, but I too would wish for Firefly the series to continue (instead of a movie).
And yeah, Mal's past needs to catch up to him. It's Compelling Joss! What will happen to these kids?
By wheyre at 10:11 AM ON 04/17/09
Yet here we are reading your response dakalmog. Are you in the middle of building a shelter right now? Taking a break from the hard work of feeding the homeless? Getting a little syfy in? How's sainthood coming?
By pocketdoom at 10:12 AM ON 04/17/09
The Matrix movie would have to include John Connor. He is the anomaly that causes the world to fail. Terminator would make an excellent partner for the Matrix movie.
By dakalmog at 10:17 AM ON 04/17/09
@Giavs and wheyre: You're right, I am a little too grumpy today. And yes, that Serenity poster does look shiny.
By Artifex at 10:53 AM ON 04/17/09
No, the way Episode 7 would need to go is to follow Timothy Zahn's amazing Thrawn Trilogy that follows immediately after the events of ep. 6, RotJ. Do you know that some of the concepts for the Separatist leaders in the prequels included drawings of Grand Admiral Thrawn as a child prodigy? That's how close we came to seeing that awesome character brought to episode 3.
Episode VII: Heir to the Empire, FTW!

good concepts, but most cases are based on something referenced in their respective movies, which means we have some inkling of a story there, which means the stories i see in my head are far better than anyone could produce... good concept here, just misses the mark...
and seriously... the alliance strikes back..??? FAIL
By 1th Cylon at 11:47 AM ON 04/17/09
Artifex - If I remember correctly Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy begins five years or so after RotJ. A different novel, Truce at Bacura (sp) is the novel that starts the day after the battle of Endor.
I would love to see a Star Wars 7,8, & 9; even though the prospect of seeing Zahn's trilogy brought to the big screen would be very cool, I think I would like to see an original story line.
I do how ever agree with the article’s author, that George Lucas needs to be kept as far away from the project as humanly possible. Lucas absolutely ruined his greatest franchise with his three prequels, The Phantom Plot, Attack of the Cash Cow, and The Revenge of the Marketing Department. I think the three movies could be best summed up with, Weekest, weekester, and weekestest. (Bad grammar intended, back off trolls.)

By Doctor Who of the Sun Shine Universe at 12:01 PM ON 04/17/09
Here's one. THE FOURTH DOCTOR WAKES UP! Apparently, when the Doctor fell (in Logopolis with Tom Baker as the Doctor), he was only knocked unconscience. All the other Doctor incarnations were only a dream! We now continue the adventures of the Fourth Doctor! Tom Baker, welcome back!
By Parallaxmjm at 12:03 PM ON 04/17/09
I think the comment about "had it with the Clone Wars" is talking about the time period in general, not just the most recent show. And count me out for anything based on the Zahn Trilogy. The trilogy was alright, but some people make it out to be WAY better than it was. It was just the first new Star Wars material in the Expanded Universe era and people hold it up on a pedestal for that reason. Kind of like how ROTJ is excused for being pretty lame in a lot of ways since everyone loves Star Wars and Empire.
There have been much better books in the Expanded Universe line than Zahn's. Including the Han Solo Corellian Trilogy and the two Darth Bane books to name a few.
By Solstice1221 at 12:08 PM ON 04/17/09
For a Star Wars sequel, I really would like to see an adaptation of the Dark Horse Comics series 'Dark Empire.' It featured both Grand Admiral Thrawn as well as Leia's early days as a Jedi, and broadened the mythology with her children.

Most of these are good with the exception of the Aliens one. With the Aliens one, we already know how it turns out. That's a main issue I had with the "Sarah Connor Chronicles". We kind of knew where it was heading. Especially with the upcoming movie. We knew the machines would eventually be winning.
These others are great continuations of well known (?) material but with endings or directions. We stay in tuned to find out "What happens next?".
I think that was one of the problems with "Enterprise". They were going back, not forward.
By bartman at 12:18 PM ON 04/17/09
I couldn't agree more about making a sequel based on the expanded universe of Star Wars! This is what should have been done instead of episodes 1 through 3. Keep Lucas far away from these sequels otherwise he'll wuss it up.
By padawanmage at 12:28 PM ON 04/17/09
I would love to see a movie based either on Dark Horse's 'Tales of the Jedi' series of comics, or even one based on Bioware's 'Knights of the Old Republic'...especially if they go with a female Revan (I know what's 'canon', but don't give a frak).
By Linnemir at 1:11 PM ON 04/17/09
Serenity and Sulu!! Either as movies or series!
But no Ron Moore, please - his idea of continuity and respecting a setting mainly consists of using a title or name and doing whatever seems 'cool' at the moment of shooting.

My theory is that the ewoks are what really put the nail in Lucas' coffin. As a child, I thought they were cute, as an adult they make no sense. Yes, we know he had his merchandising clause in the contract from the beginning, and more toys means more money, but at some point that hurts the franchise. (*cough*Fantastic Four*cough*)
Let's bring back the sophisticated story we know can be told without all the cutesy crap.
By Kevin J at 2:29 PM ON 04/17/09
Oh, and more Firefly is a given.
Better Alien movies can be made, closer to the first movie.
And the real matrix needs to be explained in the final Matrix movie. It has been long enough, with the right press, you could make a successful one.
By Fanboy79 at 3:40 PM ON 04/17/09
I want to see some more Goram Serenity or a continuation of the show. All of the movies sound great though except the Sulu movie, I've always thought he was boring, I did like Takai on Heroes though.
By radtke at 4:28 PM ON 04/17/09
yawn.
By Captain America at 4:41 PM ON 04/17/09
This list sucks. Over half of these ideas involve going backwards. We already KNOW what happened to the Colonists on LV-426. We already know the first Matrix got replaced. And Kirk/Sulu's era has already come and gone. And Takei's way to old to boot, so what'll the movie be about? Captain (Or Admiral) Sulu's retirement party?
ENOUGH WITH PREQUELS! Can we PLEASE have some forward movement, again? I'm tired of going back in time with both Star Trek and Star Wars. I want to go FORWARD. Same goes for all those other franchises. Instead of recasting Newt and wasting our time showing us how her brother died, how about showing some creativity and making a NEW story? Frankly, I don't think that's to much to ask for, but hell, what do I know?
By A New Day at 4:54 PM ON 04/17/09
This list is frakking amazing. I'm so tired of all the haters that come out of the woodwork everytime a sequel to something is proposed. (Even though I know that they are, in reality, only a small portion of the population and that most people would love to see these projects, it gets annoying because they have a disproportionate voice)
I LOVE the Star Wars Universe. Of course I'd be happy to see another movie. I love the classic Star Trek universe. How amazing to see the adventures of Excelsior. Alien was a series of movies--how much fun to be able to revisit those horrific battles and dark ship corridors. The origin story of the Matrix is a story begging to be told.
These are all fun, fantastic, exciting ideas and stories. I'd be happy to see any/all of them get made. How could someone who really loves scifi, and cinema, and IMAGINATION, say anything differently? Some people sound like a bunch of 85-year-old men sitting on their porches shaking their fists. How much of a killjoy/coldblanket can you be. Live a little. Open yourselves up to the possibilities.
By A New Day at 5:00 PM ON 04/17/09
Also, to the 'I can't believe you published this list' and 'yawn' crowd: if you have such a problem with the type of news being published on this site, then LEAVE. Seriously. LEAVE.
I'm fine with people disagreeing or agreeing about a particular article--that's great. That's what communities are about. But the people on the sidelines with a stick up their a$( who think that every article is an opportunity to proclaim 'yawn' need to just get the hell out of dodge.
It's terribly ironic (and hypocritical) that you would criticize the content and worth of the site but waste your (apparently precious) time going around complaining about it. It smells of the odious smell of trolling and it makes you look like 6-year-olds.
(Also, feel free to direct us to your own websites where, I'm sure, you're producing day-in day-out far superior content along the lines of a modern science fiction Dostoyevsky or Dickens. ... I won't hold my breath ...)
By save Sci Fi at 6:05 PM ON 04/17/09
I like tthink the idea of additional new films or series set in the various universes on this list is a good idea. Most of us enjoyed these movies or series and would enjoy new stories too further imagine and development the existing story or add new connected stories. A new generation is consistently being added to the viewer pool and new voices that can speak to this new generations should be encouraged to do so. No one has to support or view new movies.
If you desire to just live your life and let the free market that eventually pays for and allows new stories to be able to pay their own way.I would encourage you to do just that, but others also would like a cahnce to see new stories being told.
By colecovision at 6:06 PM ON 04/17/09
I'd love to see the Aliens and Sulu ones. I'v always wondered how the takeover of the colony on LV-426 went, even though we know how it would end I think it could be done in an awesomely terrifying way. And I think that the story of Sulu would be a nice change. I think it would be interesting to see how other members of the original crew ended up.

@theKRELL: My point is that I would rather see quality, professionally produced news on this site instead of the kind of manufactured material that could be found on any fan site anywhere. Judging by the number of comments on this story, my views are clearly in the minority. I should have expressed those views more constructively.
I sympathise with Captain America's comments about moving forward. At the end of the day, this is a nostalgic fan's wishlist designed to provoke comment, which is exactly what it's done.

A new Aliens movie could be interesting. I too would like to see it brought back to the suspense/horror line and not the comical fight-fest it's become.
And the Star Wars could be pretty good too. But I'd have to agree in having George Lucas step aside for a new generation of thoughts would be nice. I'd move the movie into the future too...a good 20+ years to allow for the aging of the original characters.

I do like Star Wars the expanded universe characters. Mara Jade, Talon Karrde, even the cantina aliens in Tales from the Cantina had interesting plots. They should stick with those earlier books after ROTJ or just plots involving Anakin, Jacen, and Jaina. Even stuff with Thrawn. The Young Jedi series with Lowbacca and their training was good. I don't ever want to see a live action New Jedi Order. That series was too rehashed every book, confusing, and too violent. But If they did something where Mark Hammill was teaching younger Jedi, it might be fun.

Wouldn't mind seeing The Matrix 1.0 or Star Wars VII. Only thing I'd change with Star Wars VII is killing Chewbacca, that would suck and be out of character. No body can kill the mighty Wookiee warrior, he must die of old age. Plus Chewbacca is my favorite Star Wars character, so no one can kill Chewie lol.
Another Star Wars movie I'd like to see is a Life Day movie. To redeem the old infamous Holiday Special. Something with a better plot and special effects, that of Episode III or The Clone Wars. Plus always have someone around to speak galactic basic, so we don't have 45 minutes to an hour of Wookiees speaking Shyriiwook.

I want to see movies about the rise of Darth Bane, or Yoda's earlier Jedi years, or even one that follows the Legacy story line. Sulu would be a great character to run with, especially with a motion picture, unsure if George Takei would be the one to play the part of Sulu again. Could be double cast and have it be a story he is telling his grandchildren. Just my thoughts.

Would love more Firefly, and I'd die of joy to see new Star Wars films...but bleeeeech to using the existing EU books. I hated all of them. Hated the characters, which I never connected with. Hated the scenario, which defeated the purpose of even having the Force. Hated the ridiculous plots that had none of the beautiful and powerful simplicity of the original story.
However.
If there was to be a new set of Star Wars movies, I would want them to follow the Knights of the Old Republic video games. Now THAT is what I'm talking about. Brilliant storytelling, involving plot, and characters that feel real, that you can really sink your heart into.
That, or, heaven forbid, actually picking up with a new storyline entirely, written by new authors.
Matrix...let's just pretend those last two movies didn't happen and redo them.
As for Star Trek, man, have you not seen the trailer for the new one? It looks so amazing--it doesn't even look like Star Trek. It just looks like a GREAT movie.

While I would love to see the Yuzhan Vong war on the big screen, I think that attacing the post-rebellioin GFFA would be wrought with controversy for the same reason that it would be great: There is such a wealth of information in the expanded universe. Any filmmaker would be required to severely alter the continuity of the books/comics in order to make it work on screen.

Love Serenity. Must have sequel. I think the Matrix one sounds like an interesting idea but somebody must watch over the Wachowskis or they will screw it up again. I don't have much hope for another Star Wars movie. I think a straight to DVD affair, sans Lucas, would be pretty enjoyable. And I do enjoy the Clone Wars series, it's not very deep but good for a saber/space battle fix.

The window of "Yes, please!" has passed for the rest of these ideas. Star Trek is evolving, Alien doesn't need any more worthless necromancy, Star Wars needs to be staked and put back into its grave, and the Matrix needs additional movies almost as badly as Back to the Future.

@Arcane_Guyver: Yes! Back to the Future 4!
Following the adventures through time of the Brown family.
"Where we're going, we don't need... rails..."
(I'm only half joking too...)
Totally serious, need more Firefly/Serenity. Not want, NEED.

Definitely more Firefly/Serenity! I was years late to the party, but I've got money to pay for tickets, if anyone out there in movie-making land is listening.

Don't think public would go for the Sulu movie - or most of these ideas. The Star Wars "third trilogy" sounds good, though, but I'd say make each new episode one of the book series, i.e. episode seven is the Thrawn story, etc. There are some great Star Wars books out there...

I think they ALL suck. LOL
I want to see something ORIGINAL for a change. Has everyone in the movie making business come down with the stupids? I believe so. And it's apparently terminal.
ANOTHER Star Trek? No.Unless MAYBE it's done in the 30th century. Far enough in the future that even Spock will have finally croaked his last Live Long and Perspire, or POSSIBLY if it dealt with the First Federation, ie. The Mirror Universe Saga.
ANOTHER Star Wars? No. Not only No, but HELL no! I am sick to death of Skywalkers, Obi's and Yoda's.
ANOTHER Alien/s? No. Another Predator? Maybe.
ANOTHER Serentity? Maybe, but not a TV Series, just finish the damn story and get it over with, then No.
ANOTHER Matrix? Nope. Unless it... Never mind. No.
The movie/s I would like to see made?
David Brins, Uplift saga... The WHOLE thing.
David Gerrolds, The War with the Chtorr, assuming he actually finishes the damn story before he croaks.
Harry Harrisons, The Stainless Steel Rat series.
Fred Saberhagens, Book Of Swords series, as well as the Berzerker series.
And last, but not least, L.Ron Hubbards Battlefield: Earth. But PLEASE, if this is going to get done, kill John Travolta first, or at least kick him hard enough in the shins to stop him from getting involved? Then ask Peter Jackson to make it happen the way it was supposed to happen.
Thanks. :D
