Don't blink! We unearth a few Star Trek easter eggs

Don\'t blink! We unearth a few \<i\>Star Trek\<\/i\> easter eggs

J.J. Abrams, the director of Star Trek, is well known for burying easter eggs in his various productions. (Anyone remember the "Hanso Foundation" credit at the end of Mission: Impossible III?) His upcoming reboot of the sci-fi franchise is no exception.

Our first viewing of the film last week revealed a few Trek easter eggs and a few more Abrams-universe ones, which we've tried to catalog (with help from TrekMovie.com and Slashfilm, who noticed them first). Once you see the movie, please post yours! Star Trek opens May 8. (Spoilers ahead!)

Trek eggs

♦When we first encounter Scotty in his remote station on Delta Vega, we hear the unmistakable cooing of a Tribble. Don't blink or you'll miss it, sitting in a small cage on Scotty's desk.

♦Paul McGillion, the Scottish-accented doctor from Stargate Atlantis who tried out for the role of Scotty, makes a brief appearance in the film.

StarTrek_Saurian.jpg

♦As TrekMovie.com first pointed out, James Kirk (Chris Pine) grabs a flagon of Saurian brandy to smash over the head of a Starfleet cadet in the Iowa bar-fight scene. The brandy bottle is associated with mirror-universe a transporter-accident-created evil Kirk from the TOS episode "The Enemy Within."

StarTrek_Kirk_Ice_2_large.jpg

StarTrek_Kirk_evackit.jpg

TrekMovie.com also pointed out that the writing on Kirk's evac kit features the letters and numbers "NCC-1701-D": a nod to the registry number of the Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation? (Click the images for larger versions.)

♦Chris Doohan, son of Trek's original Scotty, the late James Doohan, has a small cameo as a transporter tech. Fans recall that Chris and his twin brother, Montgomery, also cameo'd in Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Abrams universe eggs

StarTrek_Slusho.jpg

Slusho.jpg

♦Uhura (Zoe Saldana) orders a Slusho mix in the Shipyard Bar, a reference to the mysterious drink from Abrams' Cloverfield. (You can see the Slusho logo on the menu for the "Shipyard Bar," above; click on the image for a larger version.)

Tagruato.jpg

Slashfilm first noticed a second fleeting wink at Cloverfield: the blurry logo of the nefarious Tagruato corporation, manufacturers of Slusho and the possible force behind the monster that destroys Manhattan, on a building in future San Francisco. (Click the image for a larger version.)

StarTrek_Corvette.jpg

♦Greg Grunberg—Abrams' longtime friend, who has had some kind of cameo in almost all of Abrams' projects—voices Kirk's (uncle? stepdad?), yelling from the dashboard cell phone in the '60 Corvette in an early scene.

♦Amanda Foreman, who played the Wiccan college roommate on Abrams' Felicity, plays a bridge officer with a few lines. Foreman also appeared in Abrams' Alias and What About Brian.

alias_bigredball.jpg

♦Not exactly an easter egg, but the plot of Star Trek turns in part on a giant red ball. Scott Chamblis, Abrams' longtime production designer, has said the filmmaker tries to get one in almost every project he does, notably in Alias (pictured above; click for larger version).

"The brandy bottle is associated with mirror-universe evil Kirk from the TOS episode "The Enemy Within."

Man, I sound like an uber trek geek, but it wasn't a mirror universe evil kirk, but a transporter accident evil kirk. Sheesh, no wonder you're changing your name to syfy.

By paithan at 9:05 AM ON 04/29/09

mknopp31: "Man, I sound like an uber trek geek..." no man... it just makes them UBER ChowderHeads... SyFy LOL...

By budgethero at 9:27 AM ON 04/29/09

wooooow, there suure is alooot of star trek movie stuff on this news site devoted to scifi fans. ST esurance banner ads that are always on. ST season 1 blu-ray banner ads. and a ST article JUUUUUUUst about every single day. some days more than one. and no other movie gets NEARLY that much attention here.

By Paul B. at 9:56 AM ON 04/29/09

First, SciFi didn't unearth these easter eggs; they've been discussed on other websites for weeks, months in some cases. Nothing new here--but SciFiWire tries to take credit again. CRAP!

--budgethero, What's your problem? You don't like seeing Star Trek--the most famous sci-fi franchise--being discussed on SciFiWire? What do you expect here? Yeah, there's a lot of Star Trek movie stuff here, and it's a site for scifi fans--that's the biggest no-brainer on the year, buddy. (Your post is like going to Sports Illustrated and saying, Whoa, there's a lot of football talk here....)

By Dave at 10:22 AM ON 04/29/09

@Paul B.

As the article states: "Our first viewing of the film last week revealed a few Trek easter eggs and a few more Abrams-universe ones, which we've tried to catalog (with help from TrekMovie.com and Slashfilm, who noticed them first)."

That doesnt sound to me like they are trying to take the credit they clearly state TrekMovie and Slashfilm noticed them first.

By Paul B. at 10:23 AM ON 04/29/09

BTW, I know the article gives credit to two other sites, but the title and tone ("We unearth..." makes it sound like ScFiWire did the finding. All of those were on other sites before, so SciFi didn't "unearth" anything...but at least they did acknowledge some credit where it's due.

By lordbrokenhalo at 11:05 AM ON 04/29/09

i've been doing some thinking about this movie, and this is what i've come up with: jj abrams has a surprise for us all. this entire movie is an alternative universe setting which enables him to tell a great story without destroying 'cannon'. the villain in the story had every intention of going back in time to kill kirk from the original series. but instead of going straight back, he went slightly to the left and wound up in an alternative universe. this enables abrams to draw on 40 years worth of stories, but not at the same time. this is why the reference to the movie's 'rocking' nature. it's a whole new direction with a whole new band, folks! instead of the beatles, we've got the rockles! enjoy!

By shocked at 11:34 AM ON 04/29/09

i agree with budgethero. I'm shocked that a site about sci-fi news is covering the biggest sci-fi movie of the year. shocked!

oh, wait, no i'm not. that makes a lot of sense actually. phew....

By BVK at 11:55 AM ON 04/29/09

I think lordbrokenhalo's hit the nail on the head... let's all just take a deep breath and go see this movie; maybe we'll hate it, or maybe (gasp!) we'll like it! More importantly, maybe it will revitalize interest in the franchise... between TNG, DS9, VGER and NTRPRZ, we had 15 or so years of uninterrupted Trek on TV, and I don't know about the rest of you, but I REALLY miss being able to watch a new Trek episode each week!

By walleymr at 12:02 PM ON 04/29/09

wow, if syfy keeps up with all these articles, we won't even have to watch the movie to watch the movie. we can just piece together all these articles.

By SCI FI Wire at 12:30 PM ON 04/29/09

mknopp31: You're right. We'll fix.

By Sylver at 12:36 PM ON 04/29/09

I don't know why they don't rename this page Star Trek Wire as that is all we seem to be getting these days...

By Paul B. at 12:53 PM ON 04/29/09

Well, I gripe enough, so I thought I'd post to COMPLIMENT SciFiWire. (Yeah, I do that now and then.)

I saw the post about fixing the "mirror universe" mistake, and I have to say thanks for that. Not that fixing it's a big deal, but the comment and the action show more care from SciFiWire than I expected. Glad to have been shown up.

Just wanted to be fair...thanks.

They make it so frakking easy it's not even worth it anymore. Let me know when this dog shows up on NetFlix. I'll watch it then.

i didnt say SF Wire *couldnt* talk about ST 09, i just prefer they didnt play favorites.

thank the gods that abrams as full of himself toput things in the movie that dont belong. there just there cause he finds it funny. ha ha lol lol. jackass.

By jbs780 at 8:04 PM ON 04/29/09

Was Alfred Hitchcock a jackass? He inserted HIMSELF into every movie he made...whether his appearance advanced the story or not. Speilberg has been know to drop Eastereggs into movies also. Can't think of the fellow's name off the top of my head but, one film maker had the habit of having a character in each film he made go by a specific name...I think it was "Griff." An example of this was Mark Hamill's character in BIG RED ONE...which was made by this particular director. He a jackass? Abrams did not invent this sorta thing...but then some of you folks will use any excuse to go after him.

Is there anyone you would have preferred the studio had handed the keys to the kingdom? Really asking? Can't imagine who you would give a fair shot. Anyone?

Actually, Chris Doohan is Lt. Commander Transport Engineer, Kyle and he co-beams in the transporter room in 3 scenes with Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and Marlene Forte.

jbs780 I'm not say that no one ever did it. Alfred Hitchcock, Speilberg did do that But Abrams is no speilburg or Hitchcock. I'll even go as far to say if i wasa director I would do it. Hitchcock used himself. Abrams being himself and addmittly not a star trek fan most likly had to get some one to tell him what would be star trek funny. And as who would I give a fair chance as director I think my answer would have to be a person (Even an Unkown) WHO WAS/IS A STAR TREK FAN!!!

By jbs780 at 7:00 PM ON 04/30/09

OK...that is understandable...but...is it possible that what the franchise NEEDED was a fresh pair of eyes looking it and making decisions? Many are those who say things had gooten stail and it was the same old same old over and over again. I don't know that that was so...but many seem to say so. Is it possible that objectivity was needed here to revive this thing? Just axin' 8^)

By Scion68 at 3:49 AM ON 05/01/09

JBS hit the nail on the head. The ST universe is my favorite by far and still I found the last few outing stale and uninspired. Abrams' willingness to subvert canon and not make just another ST movie may be what breaths new life into this franchise. Do we have to be reminded how wrong the nay sayers were about the BSG remake? Why is it that so many want to keep looking at what was instead of what could be?

By sftv at 7:00 PM ON 05/01/09

I've watched every pretty much every episode of Star Trek produced over the years and I very much enjoyed the movie, which I caught at a preview screening last week. It works on both levels, one that a Trek fan can enjoy and also as a means to come on board Trek for the first time (or first time in a while). It goes overboard on a couple of the humor bits and by no means is a perfect movie, but it is a great way to bring Star Trek back to the global conciousness.

By Barcrest at 11:04 AM ON 05/07/09

I watched this at the IMAX last night on a preview showing, it was awsome...

One easter egg i think i saw was the inclusion of a CGI james Doohan when they are ejecting the cores fromt the enterprise. The young scotty (Simon Pegg) shouts to another engineering member who you see for a second and i am sure it was him. I admit it was like 1:30am at this point so i might have imagined it.

By abramsfan at 12:20 PM ON 05/08/09

Rachel Nichols (green girl) was a regular on Alias.
The Nokia ring tone (in the car) was a Sydney Bristow signature.

By TheHooks at 1:10 AM ON 05/09/09

Two things I thought noticed but no one else seems to have mentioned - in the scene where they are calling out ship assignments and kirk does not get an assignment - as the camera pans away I swore I heard the instructor shout "Vader report to ship hood" and towards the end of the movie during a dramatic scene I swore I heard Scottie call Kirk "Picard" - as I can't see the movie again it would be much appreciated if someone could verify these for me and email me. Thanks! great movie.

By jjb_md at 2:28 PM ON 05/09/09

I believe I spotted another egg... When Kirk and Bones board a shuttle to head for Enterprise, the shuttle's name appears to be "Gillian" -- a reference to Dr. Gillian Taylor, the cetacean biologist brought forward from 1986 with the two humpback whales in ST4:TVH.

By TheHooks at 4:45 PM ON 05/09/09

Another one I forgot about - this one is pretty obvious. When Sulu and Kirk go to disable the drill they have a third guy with them with a red suit on. As in the original tv show the unknown guy in red always dies.

By mcfads at 6:39 PM ON 05/09/09

A few Enterprise shoutouts: Scotty's reason for being 'exiled'? He got in trouble w/ Admiral Archer for transporting his 'prized beagle'...and it was nice to hear the captain of the Kelvin command his crew to 'polarize the view screen'. I guess they didn't need to polarize the hull plating anymore.

By jnsin1960 at 10:12 PM ON 05/09/09

For all you LOST fans, McCoy tells Kirk "I may throw up on ya," which is a line from Lost's first episode.

By rome at 10:01 AM ON 05/10/09

Pike was seated in a wheelchair at Star Fleet Academy towards the end of the movie - an obvious reference to the "Court Martial" episode in the original series. A less obvious reference was the uniform he was wearing - it was a replica of Kirk's uniform in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture". Pretty clever, actually.

By piper at 2:01 PM ON 05/10/09

two more ... when McCoy brings JIm to the infirmary on the Enterprise after injecting him to make him sick, one of the doctors turns as calls for Nurse Chapel. Then later in a transporter scene, a crew rush in with one blonde woman in a white coat and a Yeoman Janice Rand hairdo ... but you only see her from the back.

By jgrn307 at 4:36 AM ON 05/11/09

So here's a question for you TNG nerds, was the parasite they stuck in Pike's mouth the parasite from the infamous 2-part TNG episode "Conspiracy" (which was the most violent episode of ST:TNG, and when it originally aired actually had a content warning)? It wasn't the Khan parasite, as far as I could tell (those went in the ear)...

By tiasworld at 1:32 PM ON 05/11/09

Yeah, what was that, does anyone know? Because I was sitting there going "pretty sure that's not a Ceti Eel, so what is it??"

Oh, and it was great to see Paul McGillion for all of 10 seconds :D My sister and I liked it :P

I really enjoyed it and I went with a guy for whom this was his first foray into Trek, and I think he enjoyed it, so that's the point really.

Live long and prosper,
T xx

By IAmAGeek at 1:49 PM ON 05/11/09

IIRC, 47 was a big part of the whole RImbaldi thing on Alias (page 47 of the manuscript). Well, in Trek, I think there was a fleeting view of a hangar bay or something like that which was numbered 47.

By brwgrl at 10:24 AM ON 05/15/09

My question is about the call letters on the door-frame of the transporter room. I noticed that they were supposedly in the same room, but the numbers changed in different scenes. Any thoughts on this one? I've been wracking my brain over it since I saw the movie.

By trekfan at 7:06 AM ON 05/16/09

Writer/producer Alex Kurtzman revealed that his favorite "Trek" secret is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment from the scene where the Enterprise comes out of warp speed and into a battle above Vulcan. "When they arrive and all the debris is flying at the Enterprise, take a very close look at the debris," he explained, saying a cool Easter egg is in there. "You'll have to watch it on DVD, because it goes by very fast. But take a close look at what's floating in the debris."

Anybody know what this Easter egg is? I missed it myself.

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 5:27 PM ON 05/16/09

brwgrl,

Could it be that even though in ToS it seemed as if Enterprise had only one transporter room that it in fact had multiple transporter stations?

Even if we go with ToS only having one it is hard to believe Abrams' has only one since it seems to have more than one of everything else, e.g.. warp cores.

By dkulze at 6:19 PM ON 05/16/09

No one seems to have mentioned that, for a brief second during the gunfight on the Romulan ship, the guns sounded like the Star Wars guns (cable being struck). Also, the Cloverfield monster on the ice planet followed by the long tiled and dimly lit hall from Lost.

By maurye at 12:59 AM ON 05/20/09

Look for Professor Randy Pausch http://download.srv.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/ Randy had one line spoken as , 'Captian, we have a visual'. This was on the bridge of the U.S.S. Kelvin. Randy passed away last July.

By maurye at 1:07 AM ON 05/20/09

The '66 red corvette going over the cliff in the beginning of Star Trek appears to be a metaphor statement by J.J. Abram statement that '66 Trek is over the cliff. Out with the beloved old classic. The cut scene (should be in the DVD) with Jim's step father telling him not to scratch his car would be those who advised Abrams not to mess with the Star Trek canon. I saw young Kirk as Abrams taking the classic over the edge of the quarry.

By fischlein at 1:27 AM ON 05/20/09

Perhaps this isn't the place for it and this topic is covered elsewhere, but:

I just watched the movie, and was disappointed when Kirk offered to buy Uhura a drink. Money isn't still used in the 23rd century, is it? Surely that wouldn't have been changed...

Is this right? Did they just make a mistake?

By bigdeam at 3:00 PM ON 06/03/09

I see people are going on about this "D" bag. I have a simple explanation. The "D" bag is not a referance at all to the Enterprise 1701-D. Most military branches have, especially the Army, have different bags for all of their equipment. As an example your "A" bag is usually your field gear. Your "B" bag is usually uniforms and coats, etc. The "C" bag is personal items and clothing. The "D" bag could be Starfleets Artic survival gear bag. Just a theory, but Starfleet is Military based. Odd that 200 years in the future they would still have Army duffel bags, but hey why improve on what works.

By notAfan at 3:56 AM ON 06/09/09

My question is: How did the Romulans in Star Trek get hold of a Shadow ship from B5?

By Nefftrek at 6:08 PM ON 06/10/09

jjb_md -- I do believe the shuttle you're referring to was named the "Gilliam." I took that as a tip of the hat to Terry Gilliam. Did I read that wrong?

trekfan -- I'm guessing they're either referring to the wreckage of an NX-01 type starship -- which is so huge I looked right past it the first time -- or else a bunch of cleverly animated human bodies, which I also missed at first.

By philb at 11:46 PM ON 06/25/09

as JJ loves to have hisworld interconnect Is it just me or does the creature on the ice planet that chases kirk not look like a cousin to the creature in cloverfield

By originalgirl at 9:17 PM ON 11/24/09

In reference to the NCC-1701-D on Kirk's evac bag, perhaps not so much a nod to the Next Generation as to the original series. In the original Star Trek, the shuttles were numbered A, B, C, and D. The one most used in the original series was NCC-1701-D. As a graphic designer, I've used those call letters on shuttle disks for sending files to the printer for years.

By contak1138 at 12:54 AM ON 11/26/09

I found an R2 unit! Check the time on your dvd player, and when it reads 47:41 pause and see the left side of the screen. There's an R2 unit out there. Abrams is a Star Wars sell-out. And I love him for it.

By Pixie at 6:51 PM ON 12/20/09

Sorry a bit new to this (Only been watching films for the last 30 years or so) but I don't seem to be able to find any references to the shuttle number at the end where spock meets spock prime 12091 this being the 25th anniversary. Do I win a prize or do you all want to shout at me for pointing out something so obvious? Use the force :-D
