Dragonball Evolution opened in eighth place at the weekend box office, with just an estimated $4.7 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
A live-action spinoff of a successful Japanese manga/anime franchise, the PG-rated movie directed by James Wong opened domestically in 2,181 theaters and looks as if it will do most of its business abroad, where it had already taken in more than $25 million before its U.S. release.
Monsters vs. Aliens, meanwhile, continued strong, dipping by only 31 percent in its third weekend of release and taking in $22.6 million, which brought its domestic tally to $141 million.
Knowing was off just 18 percent, dropping to fifth place with $6.7 million, which brought its gross to $68 million.

Like it is a huge shocker that Dragonball got crushed on a major holiday weekend by a Disney movie, a comedy, an action flick that was number one last week. All I have to say is... what was 20th century Fox thinking releasing this movie against all of those, even if their expectations for the movie were low.

and like watchmen, its a "cult" type of show. Only those that watch DB whould really know whats its about or really pay attention to it.

Shouldn't the headline read "Dragonball makes $4.7 million more than expected"?

"Dragonball Evolution" is a laughably bad movie, done on no-budget, and seems more like a poorly executed made-for-TV movie than an actual series attempt at making a Dragonball film.
It's JUST good enough, though, that's its not laughably bad; it's boring and cliched.

I don't think they promoted it well. I'm not a fan, but I don't recall seeing a single commercial. I didn't even know it was out.

not gonna waste my money on it, even when it makes it to DVD, which it should've went straight to. I'm a fan of the anime but the previews were probably the best parts and they sucked.

I'm pretty sure we all saw this coming.

HA HA HA, yes this is great news, maybe hollywood studios will realize that fans know what they like and you cant alienate them with something like this. Since it got beat out by Myley Cyrus, I think Fox has no intention of making a sequel. It doesnt matter if the guy playing Goku says the script is already finished, it doesnt matter if its doing good overseas, look t the Golden Compass, it did great over seas but poorly in America do you see any sequels from that. Yea and the girl who plays Chi Chi, shes just famous for being in a reality tv show, nothing more and she defends the movie saying it needs to be more mainstream, it gives people plenty to enjoy, friendship, love, teamwork, sacrifice, so much to entertain she said. Well I dont think she should be expecting a call to play Chi Chi any more. Ha ha ha im thrilled because this means a studio in Japan or Korea, or even China can make a Dragon Ball movie, one thats faithful and not mainstream to children when the real fans who have the money are older and looking for something a little less Power Rangers.

It's a shame it didn't do any better than it did (not that I'm surprised).
I know only a little about the anime and manga, but I took my 8 year old son to see Dragonball: Evolution, and he loved it.
I thought it was a great film for kids, with great themes.
... it didn't quite have the budget or acting to make it truly great. But a good family flic anyway.
By SSMARTINDBZ at 1:16 PM ON 04/13/09
Not as bad as people may lead you to beleive. Considering the budget they did a descent job on the flim. It does seem Fox just cashed it in like they've done to Xmen. Dragonball deserved a bigger budget.
I have not seen any advertisement on television or in Magazines or even a trailer outside the Internet. This is Fox's mistake.

What did they think, so many fans od DBZ heard how they changed the story (my 12 and 15 year old sons included) and decided that they wouldn't waste their parents money on this dog.
The original DBZ story line were great and only need to be condensed maybe the studios will learn to leave well enough alone.

This isn't DBZ it is Dragon Ball and i thought it was good not great like it should have been, but i also thought they completely ruined it before i went in, which they hadn't.

I agree, the movie was good, but should have been great. It is good as a set up. If they do the sequel, they need to make it 2 hours, and put more money into it. I think a sequel with Veggita (excuse the misspelling) would be a great movie, especially if he comes an is impervious to Goku's Kamahamaya. Of course, Goku would have to become a super sayain in the sequel.
