Denzel Washington, who is filming the post-apocalyptic action movie The Book of Eli in and around Albuquerque, N.M., donated $50,000 to the Boys and Girls Club in Roswell, N.M., when he heard the charity desperately needed the money, KOB-TV in New Mexico reported.

Washington made the donation on Wednesday, and the club says Washington may donate even more down the road.

"It's an amazing thing," board member John Merchant told the TV station. "Denzel's looking into possibly helping us continually, having an annual contribution to the center."

Washington has a history with the Boys and Girls Club. He was a member of the Mount Vernon Boys and Girls Club and is a spokesman for the national organization.

While the Roswell club will remain open, directors say they still need to cover operating costs, utilities and salaries.
