We have an exclusive look at concept art from SCI FI Channel's upcoming movie event The Phantom, which depicts the proposed costume for the title character. You can see more after the jump.
The Phantom stars Ryan Carnes (Desperate Housewives, Doctor Who) as the title hero and as his alter ego, Chris Walker, in this re-imagined version of the classic comic strip, which has been updated to the present day.
In the two-night, four-hour event, Isabella Rossellini guest-stars as the villainous Lithia, the head of an experimental mind-control program. Also starring are Cameron Goodman as Chris Walker's love interest, Renny, and Sandrine Holt (24) as the Phantom's trusted advisor, Guran.

Here's how Muse Entertainment describes the Phantom's suit: "The Phantom's body suit is woven of a high-tech, nano-matrix, dark purple fabric, which is pliable, soft and also glitters with a dark metallic sheen. The fabric is a layered micro-weave of Kevlar, Twaron and Heracron fibers, skinned with a titanium-ceramic alloy neurosymbioticmesh, resistant to heat, bladed weapons, falls, impacts and small-arms fire.
"The nano-matrix fabric actually receives and amplifies intra-muscular nerve transmissions from the person wearing the suit to affect its density and movement—similar to modern bio-electronic prosthetics. Like an insect's exoskeleton, the mesh amplifies by a factor of 2.5 times the Phantom's normal output.
"The Phantom's ballistic vest and cowl helmet/mask are reinforced with contoured Chobham armor plates and wired for cellular and radio communication. The Phantom also wears black fatigues, and his purple and black boots are similar to sticky-soled rock-climbing shoes."
A favorite costumed hero for more than six decades, the Phantom relies on his wits, physical strength and skill with weapons over superhuman powers. And that suit.
Production began in Montreal under director Paolo Barzman (The Last Templar). The Phantom is slated to air in 2010 and is produced by Muse Entertainment.

This Costume looks nothing like the Phantom Costume.
The Should' have gone with the kind of Costume that the 1996 movie Had. Jsut alittle more modernized. This makes the phantom look like something either from Dune or The Costume "Q"
wore on the Star Trek the Next Generation Pilot, the Future Military guy.
This is gonna kill the phantom phenomenom.
By Kit Walker at 7:13 AM ON 04/08/09
The one on the right looks good, just lose the hood and give him a mask! My descendant needs to look his best you know!
By PALADIN at 7:26 AM ON 04/08/09
So.... The Phantom is being 're-imagined' to look more like Batman in 'Dark Knight'....
Wow. What a surprise.
How daring. How creative.
How PREDICTABLE.
I am UNDERwhelmed with expectation.
By AngryJonny at 7:34 AM ON 04/08/09
No, no, no, no, no...
MAYBE keep all the padding, but absolutely, definitely must lose that stupid hood. Guh! He looks like Admiral Ackbar.
By furnoir at 7:53 AM ON 04/08/09
considering that SyFy (yuck) couldn't even be bothered to get the family alias of KIT Walker right, we have little reason to expect anything decent from this yet another reboot that ignores everything that was so great about the original.
By Stone at 8:02 AM ON 04/08/09
Loss the hood, It's ridiculous. Make sure that the skull emblems are visible and It should look OK.
By DanDFromNJ at 8:29 AM ON 04/08/09
Having the Phantom without the hood is like having a SciFi channel that's not called SciFi anymore. Oh... umm... Oh yeah, they are doing that, too. Well the hood looks silly.
By sentaison at 9:21 AM ON 04/08/09
It looks awful, more like a rejected Star Wars outfit than anything Lee Falk would want a member of the Walker clan wearing. Part of the Phantom mystique is a fearsome appearance. This outfit looks like a futuristic hoodie worn by a gang-banger.
By dualedge at 9:48 AM ON 04/08/09
Ugh. That's a pathetically bad excuse for the costume. It's exactly what the Phantom would look like if he showed up on the CW's Smallville. I'm not asking for spandex but, come on, really? This is the best they can do?
By jdmimic at 9:49 AM ON 04/08/09
The good news is that they are calling this concept art for the proposed costume. Hopefully someone along the line said to them this looks god awful bad and stupid. Try again. Because otherwise, at the very least, the visuals in this movie are going to seriously bite. Course, the SciFi channel is not known for putting out high quality original movies. Great series yes, movies, no.
By shayd at 10:00 AM ON 04/08/09
Why is the phantom wearing a stillsuit? The last time I checked, he lived on a tropical island not Arakis.
By John S at 10:15 AM ON 04/08/09
Somebody has to say it: these designs suck. Can't ANYBODY get these great characters right?
By blue at 10:16 AM ON 04/08/09
A substantial improvement over what until now has been an outdated costume that was basically skin-tight purple cloth. This one is MUCH more "realistic" IMO
By commodoredinosaur at 10:20 AM ON 04/08/09
Great. First they totally screw up Flash Gordon and now they're gonna screw up The Phantom. Why doesn't Sci Fi leave the comic strip characters alone? Or at least respect the vision of the artists that came up with 'em in the first place?
By phantom2010 at 10:51 AM ON 04/08/09
Another crappy SciFi Channel film. What a shock. How about getting some really talented writers, actors, costume designers and set designers and do justice to this great character. Oh wait, that would cost some money and show some integrety. What was I thinking?
By phantomlover007 at 10:56 AM ON 04/08/09
What the hell is this? You guys kidding? Is this the Phantom, created by Falk 70 years ago? Give us a break, guys!!
By budgethero at 11:02 AM ON 04/08/09
i dont mind the armor/padding (hey, if ur not naturally bullet proof, u'll need something stronger then spandex to stop bullets). the hoodie.... does feel gimmicky. and not a Phantom gimmick. i dont think it fits.
but the belt is still there. im thankful for small things. but i'd prefer the suit be more purple then black. mostly black with purple highlights, feels too different to me. he's quite the phantom without that eerie purple shade as the main color.
By dakalmog at 11:08 AM ON 04/08/09
A "re-imagined version of the classic comic strip", which has been "updated to the present day"? Last time I checked, this comic strip was still being produced in the present day - and this looks nothing like the current Phantom! The modern look given to the Phantom in the mid-90s Marvel mini-series was better than this.
One of the comic's strengths is its sense of history, adventure and romance - this looks like our "young and hip" Phantom would rather go snowboarding or base jumping than take on a horde of pirates. It's a step too far away from the original concept, more akin to a Phantom set years in the future.
By ghostwhowalks at 11:28 AM ON 04/08/09
It's long been obvious nobody involved with this project ever bothered to pick up a copy of the comic book. The Knaufs obviously know nothing about the character and his history, judging from their interviews (they keep getting the simplest details wrong), and this awful redesign of the costume makes me depressed, speaking as a longtime fan of the Phantom.
I can handle changes very well, but why the hell bother to pick up the rights to a character if you're going to make him unrecognizable? Couldn't they have created their own character, which could be called "Hood Man" or something like that (it would fit the silly outfit they came up with).
Around and around goes Lee Falk in his grave.
By ArcLight at 11:41 AM ON 04/08/09
What the heck is that on his feet? Velcro sneakers?
Sheesh....
By dakalmog at 11:41 AM ON 04/08/09
What happened to Tim Boyle's proposed "The Phantom: Legacy"? From what he was saying, his film was going to be steeped in Phantom lore.
By K-Zed at 11:45 AM ON 04/08/09
Wow. I can't get over how much that sucks. I'm assuming with that hood that he doesn't ride a horse but a BMX bike instead, and doesn't "mark" people with his rings but "tags" people with spray paint!! I also suppose he fights evil by climbing out his bedrom window after his mom goes to bed!
This is awful, and since you've said it's already in production I guess there's nothing to be done about this travesty.
I understand wanting to make the character more "real life", but you're messing with a iconic figure that's been around for over 70 years, with a backstory that goes back centuries!!!!
PLEASE STOP THE INSANITY!!
By Targetboy at 12:09 PM ON 04/08/09
What is it about the upper management at SCI-Fi that prohibits learning from mistakes. After all, their "updated" Flash Gordon was excrementitious.
In truth, they should be taking notes from the UK on how to do reasonably good science fiction.
By ghostwhowalks at 12:20 PM ON 04/08/09
>What happened to Tim Boyle's proposed "The Phantom: Legacy"? From what he was saying, his film was going to be steeped in Phantom lore.
It's in pre-production, and will start filming later this year. Check out Boyle's blog to learn more: http://www.myspace.com/timboylemovies
Now there's a guy who seems to "get" the Phantom. I can't wait to see the Phantom return to the big screen.
By goldblade6 at 12:29 PM ON 04/08/09
This isn't Smaillville, so the hood does indeed need to go. I understand if they want to update the Phantom and not have him running around in purple spandex. They want to give us more than just your father's Phantom, but look at the success of Spider-Man, Batman, Iron Man, etc. There are some costumes that you just can't change too much and certain features you need to leave prominent. This suit does not do it for me. He looks like a purple version of Green Arrow from Smallville...and I would rather see a Green Arrow series.
By Noncompusmentis at 12:34 PM ON 04/08/09
seems to me that with all the nantech and biotech textiletech this suit has there's no reason for the "Phantom" to be exceptional in any way like Kit was in the comics and original story line.
the suit can do it all for him, what a great waste of backstory and plot detail. just another grand disappointment from PsyFry.

No Way! Don't tell me they're seriously doing that with the paintball suit. I am so going to miss anything that has to do with that! That suit completely and fully sucks! Does anyone think that The Phantom needs to be reinvented? Can someone buy Sci Fi a clue and explain to them that the reason the character is still around is because of the classic story and simple costume design?
By shane at 1:37 PM ON 04/08/09

Once again Sci Fi murders a great franchise. Anyone remember Flash Gordon? what a "hunk" that was. This is one of those cool cult characters that has strong franchise potential. This one will go no more then four episodes before being buried.

Finally, a Phantom who isn't Kit Walker whose love interest isn't Diana Palmer!! This sounds like it might FINALLY embrace the legacy aspect of the concept and introduce a 21st Century version of the Phantom instead of continue using the same version who dates back to the 1930's.
The Phantom will never work effectively as a concept if every time they adapt it to other media they continue using the 1930's Phantom and pretend that he's the "latest" in a long-line of Phantoms.
For each era there must be a Phantom, and in 2009 that Phantom appears to be called Chris Walker, a hero who doesn't walk around in a costume designed 70 years ago, but most likely designed 70 minutes before he puts it on.
FINALLY!!!
By rainingcrow at 3:16 PM ON 04/08/09
the old phantom was from the thirties and forties.. he is multi generational being passed from one to the next, of course the suit is gonna change over time... its not like the first phantom wore spandex, kit was on down the line into a very established mythos... chris is going to assumably be further down that line and utilizing whatever tech is available to him.
By sambolan at 3:23 PM ON 04/08/09
Looks similar to Smallville's Green Arrow though the Green Arrow is good. This one is not. The Billy Zane Phantom was good and showed he only used his natural skill and strength which is what the Phantom is about. All these re-imagine ideas. Why not just write an interesting story with the original?
By dfspablo at 3:24 PM ON 04/08/09
No,no,no.It just looks silly and like a Dark Knight rip off. What they should have done is a live action version of the animated Phantom 2040.It's the Sci Fi network for God's sake. What's more sci fi then The Phantom in the future?
By Mike at 3:26 PM ON 04/08/09
I have the feeling they released it to see the reaction of the fandom. With that in mind. I find it terrible, I think it looks a lot like the Green Arrow costume in Smallville (who's also terrible). And... this one's suppose to live in the jungle, or are they gonna transport him to the city? Because if he still lives in Africa, it's not only terrible, it's also very impractical. Walker's gonna melt inside.
By jeaf7 at 3:51 PM ON 04/08/09
The shoes need to be changed to boots and the hood needs to changed to his old style mask. I can deal with the rest. As of right now it looks like crap.
By ThisIdeaSucks at 4:04 PM ON 04/08/09
Hey look, Green Arrow's getting a spinoff from Smallville! Oh wait, it's just lazy design work...
It's not a costume, it's a purple hoodie. With body armor. Why don't concept artists understand the difference between a costume and a battle harness? Why so scared of the mask? And how the hell is something non-organic supposed to be symbiotic in any way?
By not even a phantom fan but... at 4:12 PM ON 04/08/09
This cat looks like he just came out of hypersleep with Ripley in an Aliens movie. I agree. SciFiSyFywhy has no respect for these characters. Just MBAers trying to justify their existence when it comes to artistic properties. Nice to know the world is being saved by 20-something superheroes wearing hoodies. When his guns run out of ammo does he Twitter (Tweet) them to death? That concept art is shocking enough to make Billy Zane grow hair.

This is a piece of crap and the people that designed this should be fired and hire new people who at least is appreciative and respectful of Lee Falk's character and legacy. Thumbs down..way down
By CaptainWow at 6:38 PM ON 04/08/09
Now why is it exactly that they couldn't just keep the status quo? I'd be much more intersted in watching a Phantom series that takes place in the 30's, kinda like the old Tales of the Gold Monkey show, instead of watching a lame @ss Smallville wannabe show with a Dark Knight-alike costume. Way to kill thePhantom. Looks like the ghost who walks, walks no more.
By Creeper1031 at 6:39 PM ON 04/08/09

By cgarduc at 6:50 PM ON 04/08/09
It's not the suit that make the Phantom, it was the Man. Having a super-suit takes away from the character, reduces the danger and makes him look like he's wearing a frakk'n Stillsuit from Dune! Jeez....

I'm not a big Phantom fan but there are two things I now about the Phantom:
1. The person behind the mask, and the mask itself, has changed over time.
2. I don't want to see a superhero movie about a guy on a horse in a cheap outfit.
So, I say, bring on the stillsuit. I'm going to give this one a try. For the haters, you already have the Bill Zane movie to enjoy :)

The Phantom had the rep as "The Ghost Who Walks" and in order to perpetrate that myth, the cotume had to stay, basically the same!
I can bet you dollars to donuts that the original Phantom, not Kit Walker ever..EVER wore a hoodie and battle armor that looked like Smallville's Green Arrow's uni , and a Dune Stilsuit had a baby.

I must say i agree with almost every comment posted here regarding SciFi's butchery of The Phantom character. As a long, long time Phantom fan, when I first heard about this project I was overjoyed. Now, I see it's just another comic book property in the WRONG hands! Why...oh why can't these people get these right? Especially when you have 70 years of source material to look at?! Oh well, the white shirts think they know better, but as a dog, keep returning to thier vomit. I have to say too, in my opinion, the the Billy Zane version, was perfect in setting, look, design and execution. What it really needed and lacked, was a great story. Again, with 70 years of tried and true source material, this was the best script they could come up with? In my personal opinion, I feel an 60 minute TV series, adopting the stories from the comics would be a operfgect venue for The Phantom. Witrh all the chronicles and such, you can adapt stories from the past to the future. Even som,e of the Gold Key comic stories would make great scripts for the series. Oh well...time to wake up from my dream of a great Phantom movie/series. Maybe someday...
By Moorish at 9:22 AM ON 04/09/09
This is some hideous shit.
By dakalmog at 10:29 AM ON 04/09/09
It *is* possible to do a modern-day Phantom. The current newspaper strips and comics are set in the modern era! You just have to look at the news to realize that pirates still exist, and the Phantom - the way he was originally conceived - would be just as relevant in a modern-day setting as he is in the 1930s. You don't have to do that by taking a leak all over 70 years of history. The Billy Zane movie was good fun, I really enjoyed it, but it was too cheesy for my liking and needed a better script. I've got no problem with someone wanting to tackle the Phantom like "Batman Begins" or "The Dark Knight", but it's important to keep some of the symbols that relate to who the character is and how the audience identifies with and relates to him - don't trash that and throw it away. You don't see Batman running around in a hooded parka - they've managed to modernise the Batsuit but keep the elements that make Batman look like Batman. The same should be done for Phantom, in my opinion. ghostwhowalks, thanks for the Tim Boyle link!
By Edualc at 10:52 AM ON 04/09/09
I've thought this about 're-imaginers' for a long time. That they have to pretend that THEY created the character. Not that they have a creative bone in their collective bodies. Flash Gordon was a flop. Hopefully, this will be labeled "DO NOT OPEN" in some back room of a warehouse on the Universal lot.
There is a right way to do the Phantom. This isn't it, though.
If only the SciFi Channel would let these adaptations be made with the spirit imbued in them by their creators instead of getting former fashion designers to dictate plot direction with "high-tech, nano-matrix, dark purple fabric, which is pliable, soft and also glitters with a dark metallic charlie sheen".
The Phantom wore a simple costume because it was a tradition. Something The SciFi/Wrestling Channel knows nothing about. Maybe, Chris Jericho will play a villain in an episode.
If you want the real Phantom of today, you have to get the Moonstone comic. KIT Walker is still the Phantom there.
P.S.- What's up with that hair style? The humidity in the jungle would flatten that gel job in ten minutes.
By Wacka14 at 11:36 AM ON 04/09/09
Wow...all this whining and complaining. Can't ever please the fans XD. I'm a long time Phantom fan and I think this looks cool. I love the old costume but it was dorky as hell and it didn't look good on Billy Zane in the old movie. The padding and stuff seems practical and the hood here makes sense. Glad to see that it's still Purple and Black with the skull emblem
I welcome the change and I'm more worried about the writing, Direction and visuals.
I've never been a purist when it comes to adaptations so I never feel hurt that things don't line up exactly as they do in the comics. It's supposed to take place in modern day, and the new costume potrays that very well I think. I've been hoping for a new Phantom for many years now. Let's hope this one turns out rockin!!!

typical stubborn conservative reaction - you people should open up your minds .. do you really want to see a guy in spandex (with no extra powers - don't start with your Superman bullshit) running in the streets? wake up, this character is not the most popular of the bunch and it's refreshing to see that there is an effort to modernize the look and the nature of The Phantom and attract a larger crowd. If you really want to stick to the spandex and the horsy, go out and buy and ride your own!

Dear SCI Fi. Please stop. Just stop. I love the idea of a Phantom TV series, but not if all we get visually out of it is a cowardly retread of Smallville style costume design. I really hope this is VERY early in the conceptual stage, otherwise the people tasked with the job of "updating" the character has very much missed the point.
A look that technical exudes NO supernatural menace, which is The Phantom's stock and trade. Using technological trickery to amplify that end with an eye toward a more sophisticated sort of villain to get that across is fine. This ignores the man and again falls into the trap of "overly complex yet conservative designs a la Smallville with a bit of X-Men is what the kids crave." It's getting stale fast.
This guy, sadly, looks like he'd rather be snowboarding than spending time on your show. Unless the writing is some of the best TV has to offer, I think I'd join him and avoid this altogether unless someone shows that they get more of the idea of The Phantom than this tired look.
By hfmrock at 5:25 PM ON 04/09/09
This looks absolutely atrocious. I definitely wont be seeing this. SciFi needs to learn how to honor these comics without destroying them. The Phantom would NEVER wear a hood. Why SciFI, Why?
By Monk at 6:12 PM ON 04/09/09
Could be worse. They could be doing Doc Savage......
By DaveL at 12:04 AM ON 04/10/09
I agree with the nay sayers. They've messed up another opportunity by hyping something up - dumbing it down - and trying to make it "fit" today's "hyper-entertained" culture.
By Fantastic (4) at 2:29 AM ON 04/10/09
re doing the phantom is the most stupid idea , he looked awesome before why would you re do him and make him look like a fool. stop destroying comics
By FANTOM at 2:40 AM ON 04/10/09
"A favorite costumed hero for more than six decades" that SYFY plans to frak up in one stroke by giving him some stupid hood and passing on the iconic domino mask and I don't agree with ShadowVoyd about the Smallville comparison.. at least Oliver Queen/Green Arrow wears shades that are reminiscent of the Arrows domino mask but this is just horrid.. he looks like he's wearing some scuba suit for the mentally challenged. Sadly, I would expect nothing less from SYFY
By Mr.84 at 3:08 AM ON 04/10/09
LOSE THE HOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By The_Fringe_Element at 4:11 AM ON 04/10/09
Someday, SciFi/SyFy MAY figure out that classics are classic for a reason and quit frakkin' around with them. First Flash Gordon, now the Phantom. I guees Mandrake the Magician is next to get screwed up so SF can complete the Defenders of the Earth f-0ver trifecta.
By meePANDA at 5:01 AM ON 04/10/09
How come they can't produce more episodes of Screw-on Head?!?
By kit*walker at 7:41 AM ON 04/10/09
I'm a fan of the Phantom since age 5 and now, I'm 42. I can tell without hesitations that it's the WORST thing that I saw concerning my hero. And what's more a shame for me is that ridiculous project is filmed in my own town which is very embarrassing! All my hopes for this project are now dead. I'm really deceived. It really sucks! Leave the Phantom alone, he don't need any changes. My God, what a shame!!!
By Luvcroft at 10:40 AM ON 04/10/09
I sincerely hope that the reason for showing this awful design was to get feedback before actually making this movie... Its a terrible, terrible costume... Go with the original please... Please Sci-Fi, LISTEN to the fans... PLEASE....
By Kid SixXx at 11:57 AM ON 04/10/09
I'm not fond of the costume, but what is with all of this "he'll lose his supernatural menace if he's modernized" crap?
Wasn't the whole point Nolan's Batman movies that Batman used modern weaponry and still managed to turn himself into an urban legend because bad guys feared his reputation?
Can't that still happen with this series without purple longjohns and a white horse?
By karasoth at 12:10 PM ON 04/10/09
They should just buy the rights to the Cartoon Phantom 2040 which did this exact same thing without a shiatty costume
By dakalmog at 12:23 PM ON 04/10/09
KidSixXx: ShadowVoyd has a point. The Phantom is meant to be "the ghost who walks", which means each Phantom is seen to be a continuation of the previous one - on a purely basic level, his enemies don't realize that one has died and the other has taken over. That's why the costume has stayed fairly similar across the generations, and it's one of the reasons he's become the stuff of legend. For that to work with this show, it means the early Phantoms would have worn a hooded parka/snowboard suit arrangement, which is clearly absurd. Stepping so far away from the look takes away a big chunk of who the character is and what he represents.
It's good to see so many opinions on this topic! There are more Phantom fans out there than I expected. I collect the Moonstone comics and also the Frew comics in Australia, which have just notched up issue #1536. There's a lot of Phantom material out there for those who want it.
By Randy Johnson at 9:41 PM ON 04/10/09
Another loser from the skifi channel. Can anyone say Flash Gordon? I once had high hopes for the SCI-FI Channel despite the name. The money people don't seem to get what made the original properties great and continue to pour good money after bad.
By Tony at 1:40 AM ON 04/11/09
I'm agreeing with everyone else. The signature look of the phantom would be that he wore a mask. The costume is a jump from the '96 version but the hood does seem a bit off. Keepin my fingers crossed-it sounds like a good idea and i'm definitely looking forward to the movie.
By afr52 at 6:22 PM ON 04/11/09
They need to fire the CEO of SciFi channel and replaced him or her with someone who "gets it".
This is another in a series of losers from this channel.
Don't waste your time on this one. Where's Billy Zane when you need him?
By R Check at 1:17 AM ON 04/12/09
Pass.
A lengthy description of all the "kewl powarz" of the suit just makes it worse. Don't need the spandex (don't mind it considering the kind of "action" one might require... speed skaters aren't out there in rap video attire), but the crazy cyber super speed, strength enhancing hoody suit is just... 80's TV.
By Kid SixXx at 7:47 AM ON 04/13/09
@dakalmog:
I understand the premise behind the Ghost Who Walks and I wouldn't be discussing this if I weren't.
I guess the addendum to my argument is that if this series is supposed to be taking place in modern times then the traditional superstitions trappings of the character will be out of place.
The whole premise of the Phantom being immortal and the whole facial scarring of bad guys with a ring made from the nails that hung Jesus on the cross just goes out of the window.
I suppose my critique is that I don't mind a modernization of the character with a different rule set, but my actual preference would be for a Phantom series to take place in the timeframe of the original comics with all of those traditional elements in place right down to The Good Mark and The Evil Mark.
By another disappointed person at 4:49 PM ON 04/13/09
NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was excited when I heard you were making the show, but now I've seen the concept art I have now completely and utterly lost any and all interest.
This looks rubbish... complete rubbish!
I understand that it is a "re-imagining", but there's a thin line between "re-imagining" and "completely ruining".... unfortunately you have not only crossed the line, but full on jumped over the line and just kept running!
Please, oh please, take note of the MANY negative comments posted on this webpage and all of the many other websites talking about it and have a re-think.
If your concept art gets this bad a response, then the currently planned show will likely get an even worse one.
Please re-think your approach and please change your costume design.
By free play at 8:10 PM ON 04/13/09
honestly, the costumes not to my liking
By jaybox at 7:43 AM ON 04/14/09
A miserable failure in the making. Why do directors/producers feel compelled to put their spin on something that has stood the test of time internationally.
By Tiberius183 at 5:03 PM ON 04/14/09
I'm sorry, but no. This is HORRIBLE. The Phantom is NOT supposed to look like the main character from the game "Dead Space". And, is it just me, or does it look like he's wearing Converse All-Stars'?!
Personally, if I HAD to revision the character, I'd have gone for tight leather a-la the X-Men, but with a purple trim, with a similar mask and cowl as the original outfit.

Last I checked, the Phantom was a human that was in absolute peak physical condition - not some guy with an armored supersuit - it's been done, it's called "Iron Man."
With the hood up, I'm getting much more of a BUG motif than skull motif. Besides, peripheral vision is useful in normal life and VITAL when you're a vigilante. Someone ought to tell Ollie Queen, and whoever designed this.
And what the heck is with CHRIS Walker? Wasn't the the father of the first Phantom? Doesn't the name KIT Walker have significance (in that EVERY single Phantom has had the name)?
Phantom Phans, I fear we're in for a 'Highlander: The Source' level of suckage here...
By Adore at 5:08 PM ON 04/19/09
"Revenge is justice" They're making the guy an anti hero *rolls eyes* The outfit isn't the character because they aren't doing the actual character.
By Rogue747 at 7:03 PM ON 05/08/09
Billy Zane did an extraordinary job on the first Phantom. The costume was authentic and first rate. Too much change destroys the essence of the character. Improve the weapons not the costume! You are messing with an icon. THINK! THINK!
By Houston at 3:02 AM ON 05/09/09
I agree with Kit Walker, The charater on the right looks better all they need to add is the mask for his eyes he would look cool as.
By The Boss or Me ? at 1:33 AM ON 05/22/09
no no no, please go back to the original, he has lived for 300 years in that outfit, leave it alone
By crazymaverick at 5:52 PM ON 05/26/09
I understand the costume needs to be "updated", but this is completely RIDICULOUS!!!
As mentioned before, all the successful comic book adaptations so far have retained the essence of the look. The changes/updations to the designs have not rendered the end result unrecognisable.
I can see where you are going with this, but the hood and the original mask, the gunbelt and the boots need to be referenced more strongly in the new design.
By CB2001 at 10:40 PM ON 06/07/09
Like with "Fire Serpent", the only reason why I'll watch it is because it has Sandrine Holt in it... She's my favorite actress.
By The Runester at 10:30 PM ON 07/09/09
I like what I am seeing. If handled correctly, it could reintroduce the character to a whole new generation of fans. I am looking forward to this series.
By The Runester at 10:35 PM ON 07/09/09
I like it. I hope that the scripts are good, as well as the acting and directing. Has anyone been casted yet?
By Kit walker at 3:38 AM ON 09/01/09
If you want an actual Phantom is better other version. You can choose, the moderm Marvel version (Three number miniseries) with his motor bike, the futuristic Phantom 2040. But not a Phantom in arrakis in DUNE 3.
If you kill the character as Flash Gordon I unsubscribe of Sci-fi forever.
By Tregonsee at 8:39 AM ON 10/02/09
Chewie, I have a bad feeling about this!
By numetheus at 2:51 PM ON 10/03/09
You are all funny. You all sound like the same whiney group back before Transformers came out when the designs were leaked. Everyone complained and cried that it will ruin Transformers and the movie would fail because it is so far gone from the original. But you know what? It turned out being extremely successful and made a new generation of fans.
If this fails it won't be because it is so far gone from the original Phantom. Because believe me, as a whole, the numbers that won't see it because it is so far gone aretiny compared to the huge number of fans that just like these movies in general. If it fails it will be because they didn't do a very good job with production overall. But I'm sure lots of you will chalk it up to the costume.
By Jayfournines at 10:06 PM ON 10/03/09
He looks JUST like Altair from Assassin's Creed...or like the cheesy Green Arrow from Smallville
By Mr. E Nigma at 5:05 PM ON 10/18/09
I know the costume is weird, but come on guys. It reminds me of the Green Arrow costume on smallville. It could be worse. The muscle stimulent is very odd, but it worked in Batman Beyond I thought. Just be glad the "ghost who walks" isn't dead. Plus if it fails, the big budget movie could save the phantom legacy. I look forward to the phantom tv movie.

This "design" has been produced by an artist who has never been even slightly interested, let alone become absorbed and involved in the mystique, drama and sheer excitement that The Phantom .. Ghost who walks, Man who cannot die .. generates within his avid followers.
We who read and enjoy Lee Falk's marvellous character's adventures love the sheer timelessness and continuity of The Phantom and his exploits. We love the fact that he remains constant .. the costume, the weaponry, physical strength and powerful sense of morality.
Jungle folklore says it all: "Those who oppose The Phantom ensure their own demise!"
Roughly translated, it says: "Hands off The Phantom's costume .. or die hideously at the Box Office!"
