Harold Ramis reveals Groundhog Day musical in the works

Harold Ramis reveals \<em\>Groundhog Day\<\/em\> musical in the works

The 1993 hit fantasy film Groundhog Day, which starred Bill Murray as a weatherman stuck reliving the same day over and over, may soon become a stage musical.

According to MTV's Music Blog, the famed Broadway lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd) revealed about five years ago that he loved the idea of doing a stage adaptation of Groundhog Day.

No one thought it might actually happen until Harold Ramis stopped by the MTV News offices to chat about his upcoming movie The Year One and shared that plans for a Groundhog musical are not just idle gossip but are actually moving forward.

Ramis, who in addition to Groundhog Day has written some of the greatest film comedies of the last 30 years, including Animal House, Caddyshack and Ghostbusters, revealed that "Danny Rubin, who wrote the original script, has been working on a book for a musical."

During his visit, Ramis clarified Sondheim's rumored participation. "Stephen Sondheim was asked what film he would turn into a musical, and he said Groundhog Day," explained Ramis. "And I said, 'Wow, that's pretty cool.' James Lapine, who directed a lot of Sondheim, actually contacted me and asked if I'd thought about a Groundhog Day musical."

So does that mean Sondheim might be involved? "I don't know," Ramis said. "I like that he took it that seriously."

A musical adaptation of Groundhog Day isn't as strange as it might at first seem. As SCI FI Wire reported recently, sci-fi and fantasy films have long provided the fodder for stage musicals.

Yeah, Scifi and Fantasy have taken over the musical theatre industry. So as the scifi channel slowly fades away Broadway picks up the slack. Time to start taking dance lessons my fellow Whovians and Trekkies.

Do I trust ANYTHING that's written today? No.

Have you seen what's on Broadway lately? They've got an Adams Family musical in the works. If Broadway's pulling something for Apirl Fools day they've been working on the prank since 2006.
