Hugh Jackman announces $100,000 Twitter charity competition

Hugh Jackman has announced a competition to donate $100,000 to a charity of the winner's choice—as long as they can make their case in 140 characters.

"I will donate 100K to one individual's favorite non profit organization. Of course, you must convince me why by using 140 characters or less," the star of the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine wrote on Twitter.

According to cnn.com, Jackman has so far received Twitter responses from people interested in combating poverty, water shortages and anti-gay discrimination, among other causes.

Operation Rainbow corrects facial deformities when nature goes horribly wrong.
For those inflicted, the generosity of others is their only hope.

Hugh Jackman can probably afford to donate $100k to every tweeter's charity, not just one. Not that I am ripping on Hugh, he is probably in my top 3 favorite actors right now, but I just think he's gotta be super rich at this point, probably worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

I personally would like to see money donated to research a rare genetic disorder called "2q35 Deletion" because my co-worker's friend has it and they have a difficult time dealing with it, plus the guy just got laid off. I don't think $100k will find a cure or anything though, so why bother? With all the competition on Twitter it's almost not worth bothering to tweet it.

Hi Hughie!
I reckon the Urostomy Association of G.B. and IR stand a good chance of being helped out. We have lost the only sponsor we had, and the National Lottery will not help.. We collect amongst ourselves (local branches) which helps to finance our yearly AGM, but we are almost on our knees and desparately need help top keep the good work afloat.. We help unfortunate people who have had BIG OP's to have bladders and prostate's removed. They have a site as above. Thank you Hughie! Roland R. Peach

I am founder/director of a small non-profit Beta Foster Care I started in 1988 by selling my home as start-up funds. I was a social worker in Child Protective Services prior.
Problem: Foster Children need immediate therapy before manifesting abuse symptoms in placement.
Problem: Foster Parents need small group initial & ongoing training and weekly support.
Best Practices Solution: (www.betafostercare.org)We train foster parents even one at a time, match children for placement, provide therapy at start of placement; provide weekly foster parent support.
Results: 90%+ success in placement stability and foster parents adopt foster children that do not return home.
Problem: State sets service rate that has not been increased for Cost of Living in 8 years. We are unable to recruit new foster families.
Request: Funds to recruit families needed and invest funds for stability.

Hugh- Camp Susan Curtis in Stoneham, Maine is a summer camp for under-privileged youth. CSC helps children ages 8-14 by giving them a safe place to stay and be kids for 2 weeks each summer at no cost. But that's just an overview, I personally experienced the joy of camp. My mother physically abused and neglected my 4 younger sisters and I EVERY DAY. When I went to camp, I learned many skills that empowered me to help my sisters and I get out of the situation permanently. Camp is a place for hundreds of kids like I used to be. With $1000,000 I KNOW they'd be able to save hundreds more. Please choose Camp Susan Curtis, I guarantee you won't regret it, and the children will appreciate it for the rest of their lives.

You need to donate the money to Carolyn’s Compassionate Children’s Scholarship! This scholarship means a lot to me and other cancer warriors that are fighting and trying to make it through school. This will help who ever receives the scholarship to be able to not have to worry about if they can afford college because medical bills are so high. PLEASE donate it to this organization! Cancer survivors deserve this!

Liver disease is one of societies silent killers. With many thinking people deserve it because of social choices. WRONG! There are over 100 different diseases that affect the liver and it does not discriminate! Children are born with it, grandmothers die from it and many don't even know they have it. It's under funded and misunderstood. Monies are desperately needed for education and research.

This is simply amazing! Good for Hugh! Hopefully this will trigger some other high end celebrities to do something similar...I recently began doing charity work myself - www.DreamsforKids.org - and I have absolutely Loved it. I wish everyone could experience charity work at least once in their life. Have a great day!

Our son, Steve, passed away from cancer at the age of 29. He was attending medical school. He first got cancer when he was 16. He knew how hard it was on his mother and me when he got cancer. He asked us to use his life insurance money to set up a scholarship program for children who had survived cancer and we did. We have given $140,000 in scholarships in ten years.
