Star Trek held its world premiere in Sydney on Tuesday night, and we've got a few images from the movie's red carpet in front of that city's famed opera house.

Meanwhile, SlashFilm has helpfully compiled early reviews of the movie from the surprise screening in Austin, Texas, and the Sydney premiere, most of which are positive.

In attendance were cast members Zachary Quinto (Spock), Chris Pine (Kirk), native New Zealander Karl Urban (McCoy), John Cho (Sulu), Aussie native son Eric Bana (Nero), director J.J. Abrams and producer Bryan Burk, all decked out in dark suits.

More than 1,500 people attended the gala premiere screening in the opera house.

Star Trek opens in North America in IMAX and conventional theaters on May 8.

Man, that's quite a line-up of overdressed pretty boys.

By enlistedsolid at 2:12 PM ON 04/07/09

Ain't there any wimmins in the movie?

By zathras at 2:28 PM ON 04/07/09

It's interesting how this new Star Trek re-imagining involves some "heightening" of some of the male characters. Both Chris Pine, who plays Kirk, and John Cho, who plays Sulu, are markedly taller than the original actors who played those roles.

Could they really not have found attractive and charismatic shorter actors to play those roles? I mean, I understand that they tried to choose actors who captured the overall look and feel of the original actors, but still, why does Hollywood almost always choose a tall actor to play a character who was originally played by a shorter actor; or even worse, pick a tall actor to play an actual historical figure who was in fact short. You almost never see the reverse--a short actor playing a historical figure who was in fact tall.

Sigh. I suppose if they ever do a remake of The Next Generation, the guy who plays Picard will be 6'0" and have a full head of hair...

By datarat at 2:52 PM ON 04/07/09

Height? Seriously?

By halfrican at 4:13 PM ON 04/07/09

I would be more concerned about the filmmakers bastardizing Star Trek than the height of the new crew. That is priority one.

By Jeff at 4:19 PM ON 04/07/09

I am shocked that JJ didn't cast actors the EXACT same height as the originals...proof that he isn't faithful to the original series.

By no_more_garbage at 4:39 PM ON 04/07/09

Well ... it looks like I can stop yelling at the moon because the powers that be in the smoked filled rooms are going to push this whether it is good or whether it is complete garbage.

I think the real Trekkers have bowed out of this particular shouting contest and have given up. What remains are fans of Attack of the Clones and the likes, which have drooled over trailers that make it seem as if this will be Episode II & III all over again.

As I said the real fans have bowed out and it is time for me to do so. Not a film I'm going to see so that's one $7 ticket they can't ever count.

By this movie sucks at 5:24 PM ON 04/07/09

WHAT A SPLENDID GROUP OF CRAPPY ACTORS PLAYING AWFUL CHARACTERS IN A HORRIBLE MOVIE.
I HATE QUINTO, SO MUCH SO MUCH so much so much so much.
but I hate J.J. Abrams so much more.

By trekkergirl at 6:46 PM ON 04/07/09

All right already! For weeks now it has been
nothing but complain,complain,complain!
Now you've all decided that they can't even
do a red carpet appearance right! Even worse
you are judging the movie based on the premiere!? My god! what exactly are you people looking for? A religious experience?
Go to church for that! I've been watching Star
Trek in all of its many incarnations since I
was a small child, and I've enjoyed every one,
despite the flaws. I plan on going to this movie too, and you whiners better stay home,
or I'll pour my popcorn over your heads!

By Tiberius at 7:07 PM ON 04/07/09

I agree with trekkergirl. I guess some fans can't be satisfied. How faithful do they want it to be? Would casting a Canadian, Jewish actor of Polish and Hungarian descent instead of Christopher Pine be enough? Should John Cho be replaced by a gay Japanese American from Los Angeles? Would that be better? Should the casting director spend years looking for another Jewish actor from Boston to play Spock instead of Zachary Quinto? Should Paramount have spent billions of dollars cloning Gene Roddenberry to write the screenplay?

If you whiny jerks can make a better Star Trek movie, then do it. Get yourself a high end digital video camera, write a script (standard feature scripts are roughly 120 pages, 12 point Courier font) build some sets, find some actors, and put your money where your mouth is, you whiny gits.

By rkf at 7:53 PM ON 04/07/09

Thank you, trekkergirl & Tiberius!! It always seems to be bitch, bitch, bitch with the fanboy contingent. I've been watching Trek since I was a kid. Some I liked better than others, though I think all had their merits. But if I got bored with one, or didn't enjoy it, I just didn't watch it or go see it. How simple is that? Nice and easy...

If you already hate the movie, by virtue of your powerful prognostications, then stay home and don't ruin it for those of us who actually want to experience it before we pass judgment.

By fizzben at 8:12 PM ON 04/07/09

rkf, they're not going to do it, why? cause they have no life outside bashing things that don't make sense in their mommy's basement abode. The new movie is ruining their life and now they hate everyone that's willing to give it a chance. They're fighting a war that's already lost and they're grabbing anything they can no matter how insignificant to beat it with. Height? OMG. Crappy acting? funny, critics by profession have said otherwise, horrible movie? Let's see how much money it makes, then we'll know. Folks in a rage over this movie need to take a pill and go back to their playstations.

By Amicron at 2:51 AM ON 04/08/09

Just enjoy the movie guys! The trailers look GOOD. No, the actors aren't perfect matches. No the sets don't look the same (I didn't like the bridge either the first time I saw it.) So what? Big deal. Go enjoy the movie, have fun, and RELAX.

By Gowron at 1:57 PM ON 04/08/09

Trekkies are complaining about differences with the new movie. Did you complain how the Klingons look like in the very first movie compared how they were in the original series? Don't think so. How about when TNG came out. People loved TNG Just wait and see. Paramount wants a bigger audience than just trekkies.

By kizer at 6:23 PM ON 04/08/09

You guys/gals realize its just a movie right? There is life after you watch it. =)

By Zacary R Wildstar at 12:04 AM ON 04/09/09

Truth be told with out names under them would you know one from the other? image is nothing substance is everything. if you dont believe walk across niagria fall with out a bridge on the mist.
