Jason Katims develops Oz-themed Dorothy Gale for NBC

Jason Katims develops \<i\>Oz\<\/i\>-themed \<i\>Dorothy Gale\<\/i\> for NBC

Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights) is overseeing another drama in development at NBC, a modern-day take on The Wizard of Oz, Variety reported.

Dorothy Gale comes from Friday Night Lights writer Bridget Carpenter, who's executive-producing; Katims will serve as a nonwriting executive producer with Meryl Poster.

The script follows the story of Dorothy, a girl from Kansas who tries to tackle modern-day Manhattan (her version of the Emerald City). Dorothy finds a job in the art world—and must deal with a wicked boss.

Carpenter's credits also include Bionic Woman, Dead Like Me and Head Cases.

That's absolutely brill. Why Oz and not Wonderland? What will take the place of the flying monkeys--bike messengers?

Let's hope it BURNS in development Hell.

Didn't Sci-Fi, I mean SyFy already do something similar...

Tin Man anyone?

By dryedmangoez at 3:16 AM ON 04/06/09

The short description sounds like any other "small town girl trying to make it in the big city" premise.

Sadly, it doesn't seem at all interesting or different.

I posted but my comments were removed. As I tried to say, Tin Man dealt with an actual alternate reality. This is just a young girl from a small town making it in the big city. A typical 'That Girl' plot with a few Wizard of Oz allusions. Not really science fiction or fantasy at all....

And I feel insulted that this is being passed off as science fiction or fantasy. I said this twice, both as politely as I could manage despite my being insulted as a scifi fan and each time it was removed.

As I said in one of my earlier comments you may as well try to say a few good men is about a vampire coven only... not. The girl is named Dorthy and she's from Kansas but there's nothing fantastical about a small town girl moving to New York and trying to make it. That happens all the time, especially on prime time dramas / sitcoms. Why is this being passed off as Scifi or fantasy?

Oooo! Yet another take on The Wizard of Oz. How incredibly original.

By DanDFromNJ at 10:51 AM ON 04/06/09

Isn't this show already on? I think it's called ugly bettty. This is a terrible idea.

By sparrrownightmare at 11:13 AM ON 04/06/09

I can't believe that people this stupid are writing TV and Movie scripts... The levels of idiocy in Hollywood these days, just boggles the mind...

By j0ntown at 11:26 AM ON 04/06/09

Wasn't that already done as The Mary Tyler Moore show? With Ted Baxter as the scarecrow...

By pictishmac at 12:20 PM ON 04/06/09

Hey NBC/Universal: Drop this crap, and bring back shows like Flash Gordon...

By Mandy at 1:38 PM ON 04/06/09

'Oooo! Yet another take on The Wizard of Oz. How incredibly original.'

It's not even really that. It's the Mary Tyler More Show thinly disguised as Ozian. A girl named Dorothy from Kansas tries to make it in New York City so.... umm... how is this Scifi or fantasy? It's not even a real Wizard of Oz story. Just an allusion to The Wizard of Oz.

DURN MANDY!!!

Whatdidja SAY!

By Mandy at 5:25 PM ON 04/06/09

Pretty much the same thing I said in the one post they allowed to stick only originally it was a bit longer winded. I guess someone didn't want the first comment to be so negative. Or to point out that the emperor's new clothes aren't real... I mean that this isn't Scifi or fantasy. And is not really a wizard of Oz story, just an allusion to The Wizard fo Oz.

STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By DJ Jarak at 5:58 PM ON 04/06/09

The writer has some good shows on his belt. I'm a huge fan of Dead Like Me. I'll give it a shot. I have been pleasantly surprised before.

Hey NBC/Universal: Drop this crap, and bring back shows like Flash Gordon...>>

You want a second season of old, familiar crap? I thought the movie with Max von Sydow was awful--it was a Hell of a let-down when Sci-Fi Channel made one of my favorites into a crapfest. (I will NOT! say Syfy!!!)

By americanfairy at 7:14 PM ON 04/08/09

What every happened to continuing Tin Man? Seriously, how can you even attempt to pass this off as science fiction while ignoring the immense potential that Tin Man had and still has? There are still plenty of fans out there who would like to see that.

Seriously now, the small town girl meets big city theme as been so overused and abused that it seems hardly worth considering anymore.
