Joss Whedon, co-creator and director of the hit Web musical Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, told a group of reporters that a sequel could take any form: another Web series or even a feature film. The three-part series' success on the Web, DVD, iTunes and CD could interest studios in funding a big-budget sequel, but Whedon intends to keep things intimate.
"Well, we don't want to be beholden to anybody," Whedon said in a group interview on Tuesday in Hollywood at a Paley Fest panel on the show. "We want to do the product the same way we did the first one, which is out of our hearts, and then go to people [and say], 'OK, if you're interested in this, this is what it is.' Besides, it could be something theatrical. It could be something on the Internet again, where it's done on the fly and it all comes from us. We don't know how we want that to be. The best thing to do is to write it. Then we can start deciding a business model based on the script."
A feature-length Dr. Horrible sequel is a serious consideration but not definite. "We've talked about doing an actual studio film, and we've talked about doing an independent tiny little thing," Whedon said. "We've talked about everything in between, the bumper sticker, whatever format."
In a separate interview, co-writer and composer Jed Whedon (Joss' brother) said the sequel's length would be determined by the medium in which it appears. "It depends on what form it takes," Jed said in an exclusive interview on the red carpet. "The story that we're talking about is pretty big, so it might end up being longer."
Spoiler alert: Maurissa Tancharoen, co-writer and Jed's fiance, added that the writers could find a way to bring back Felicia Day's ill-fated Penny for a sequel. Not that they would invalidate the dramatic effect of Penny's death.
"Penny is definitely dead, but there are ways," Tancharoen said. "We love Felicia so much. Maybe she'll do catering while we shoot the movie."
Jed added: "It's movie magic, so there are a lot of different things we can do. We just want to hang out with her."
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is available at the official Web site, through iTunes and Hulu and on DVD.

A feature film would fail. And would be a sell-out move. But that's what's going to happen because otherwise they wouldn't have mentioned it.
Like you can't make feature-length films for internet distribution. I'm appalled.

Penny was a super hero in her own rights. She create robots or clones of herself to help the homeless. That is how she can cover so many corners asking for donations at once.
It's obvious the penny that was killed by Dr, horrible was a bot. The lack of emotions, how she seems oblivious to billy being Dr. H.
When the Penny bot was killed, she was 1/2 mile away staffig a free food counter for the homeless.
-Just my 2 cents.

This is great news. If Joss needs someone to do the production photos for the DVD release I would be happy to donate my time and equipment. And fly out on my dime. Just to be a part would be enough.

I'd bring out the Penny evil twin - Jenny, make her so evil that Dr. Horrible has to reign in her evilness because he misses the sweetness of Penny eventually leading to the de-evilification machine ala Superman II, but the switch is Dr. Horrible ... well can't give it all away, Joss, call me. ha
My vote is for another web epic, but I'd go to the movie
By ProfessorSpork at 10:20 AM ON 04/20/09
My theory: time travel. If Billy is already brilliant enough to build a Freeze Ray that can stop time, it's not unfeasible to think he could modify it to take him BACK in time as well. Of course, he would attempt to fix the past in order to save Penny's life, without being seen by his past self--and of course, Penny would end up dying anyway, because this is Joss and such things are permanent.
Though I must say the Pennybot theory has appeal.
By Syberwolf at 10:26 AM ON 04/20/09
I love the pennybot idea, that sounds great. I also agree they definitely need to keep from selling out...keep it small internet based and completely independent, anything else would be met negatively..
By scarlett at 11:02 AM ON 04/20/09
I'm with BlueLint about Penny being a superhero. When she says to Billy, how people can be one thing on the outside and something totally different on the inside? She was totally about to confess her own superhero identity.
By Branwyn at 11:07 AM ON 04/20/09
I'd vote for a Penny-bot too...in terms of the sequel itself, I'd pay to see it in the theatre, but online worked so well for the first one that it might be tampering with a good formula to expand it.

By Some Cynical Guy at 12:25 PM ON 04/20/09
To ProfessorSpork: perhaps some sort of anti-ontological paradox ray to go with it? :p
I'm thinking perhaps some ludicrous/hilarious sequence of events that blasts Dr. Horrible and whomever else into an alternate reality...
By HappyNoodlyBoy at 12:36 PM ON 04/20/09
Dude, what about flashbacks? Like high school? Where Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer used to be BFFs and Penny was their object of affection (though she was in the Vegans Unite! club) and after graduation (and multiple evil plots that, while sound, were inevitably defeated by Cp't Hammer) Dr. Horrible tries to ask Penny out, but Fake Thomas Jefferson or Dead Bowie win. And also, Penny was some sort of evil genius hellbent on ruling the world and had a crush on Dr. Horrible (Though, it would be Billy Buddy and Cp't Hammer, not Dr. Horrible)
PREQUEL! FTMFW
By Nobody Knows at 1:06 PM ON 04/20/09
I kinda like the idea of Dr. Horrible suddenly seeing Penny everywhere - not as a ghost, but maybe a phantom of his guilt/obssession -- across the street, in the window of a cafe, passing in a taxi...
By Spartacus at 1:07 PM ON 04/20/09
I think it would be a cool twist if Penny wasn't brought back by Dr. Horrible, but if she was brought back by someone trying to work against him. They give her superpowers of some sort and send her after him.
By WildZBill at 1:08 PM ON 04/20/09
Felicia as just the caterer? Oh no you don't! She is one of the main attractions!

I hope they make a straight-to-DVD movie: I'd buy that!!! But seriously, Joss, stop selling out. He oughta know by now that unless he's holding the purse strings, it's not going to turn out like he wants it to!!!
By X at 1:17 PM ON 04/20/09
technoir, I like Dr. Steel as much as the next mad scientists' lackey, but beyond a similar fashion sense, there's no connection between the two.
I think maybe having Penny appear as a hallucination that torments Dr. Horrible as he works with the evil league of evil might be fun. Have Penny become his "conscience."
By wildride at 1:23 PM ON 04/20/09
Penny's appearance should be his subconscious haunting him with guilt over her death.
Oh, and the sequel needn't be a musical, especially at movie length, now that the characters are established.
By brent847 at 1:27 PM ON 04/20/09
felicia day is a must have and im glad she is important to you also,, summer glau may be available also from the looks of things.
she could be a clone or something badhorse cooked up or a ghost to haunt billy (scrooge him) (role reverse hammer and dr.)
By Hanni at 1:29 PM ON 04/20/09
I am so in love with the low-budget web story! (Although, of course, I'll be there for whatever!)
If Joss needs ideas on how to make the most of the medium, he should talk to web-comic artist/business mogul Howard Tayler of Schlock Mercenary!
By RavenScout at 1:36 PM ON 04/20/09
I can't wait! However, Hollywood would only dilute the script so that we wouldn't even recognize this wonderful piece. Don't let them get their hands on it.... Please!!
By chimmely at 1:40 PM ON 04/20/09
We are all missing the clearly obvious:
Penny has an EVIL TWIN, Jenny!
Can Dr. Horrible match up to her extreme evilness enough to impress her... or does he even want to?
By barrytx at 1:53 PM ON 04/20/09
Great News!! Is this really a Monday? If serials have taught us anything then surely Penny had an evil twin sister. I could go for some Penny-bot too!
By caphappy at 2:49 PM ON 04/20/09
Penny was bad horse!
That horse you saw at the end and lyrics refering to "he" were just a clever ruse.
As we all know the thoroughbred of evil is far to powerful to be killed by a simple impalement.
By Amanda at 3:30 PM ON 04/20/09

By LunchBox42 at 3:35 PM ON 04/20/09
I can see Penny coming back in dream sequences of Dr. Horrible. Perhaps there will be a "If only penny were still here...." and then float to Dr. Horrible and her in his lab. Even better, she could play Pennys twin sister who comes to gets Pennys stuff and Dr. Horrible now falls in love with her!
By pickle at 3:52 PM ON 04/20/09

They'd have to introduce a new conflict, as Penny died, erasing Horrible's motivation and cursing him to a life as a supervillain who conducts his life much like Jason from Hey Nosrtadamus, and sending Captain Hammer to therapy. Maybe the sequel could be about their personal recovery from the shock of the incident. Or the Penny-bot.

That sounds about right. I love their work, but it would drive me crazy on Buffy and Angel when you'd have these really powerful moments when someone would die... and it would change the other characters, but then they always brought them back to life. I really wish they wouldn't do that. Heroes has the same issues. Why can't a series kill people off properly? Ok, Harper's Island is, but you know they are all going to die anyway so it isn't all that powerful.

By Sunnyleo at 12:03 PM ON 04/21/09
I don't think Penny needs to be revived, but she should haunt everything Dr. Horrible does.
Dr. Horrible needs a new antagonist as Captain Hammer is a just a crying baby right now.
Anyhow, I cranked out a 40 page fanfic SCRIPT just for fun (don't write nor support fanfic). I can see possibilities are endless, but the first Dr. Horrible is incredibly layered... so I hope the sequel doesn't become an one-dimensional "Quantum of Solace" plot.
By Mike K at 2:30 PM ON 04/21/09
Penny Died?? Since when? OK I saw what you saw, but everyone just ASSUMED she was dead. There was never a doctor going "Let's call it". Until I see a headstone, I'm not convinced!
By someSyl at 3:05 PM ON 04/21/09
uhm... I don´t know if you really saw what I saw but all the "Horrible kills Hammers Girlfriend" headlines and news reports that´re scattered over the final song very pretty definite to me...
Besides, just calling it false and going on as if she was alive would kinda ruin the ending of the show...
By LithiumRox at 6:06 PM ON 04/21/09
While Pennybot and Evil-Twin-Jenny are both enticing ideas, I gotta go with the Phantom!Penny, haunting Billy's subconscious. It doesn't take anything from her death or her character, it isn't beyond the realm of reality, and it allows Felicia to reprise her actual character, not a mechanized version or an *Evil* variation of it.
By aelynn at 12:30 AM ON 04/23/09
I'm all for the phantom!penny acting as Billy's conscience and guilt. Just the memory of Penny haunting him, i would love to see that interaction. it would be awesome. oh, and gotta keep it on the web. feature-length is a bad idea- keep to the original medium please!
By DeadGendo at 12:05 PM ON 04/23/09
Johnny Snow "borrows" Penny's body from the morgue and keeps it on ice in an attempt to draw out his "nemesis" . It works and the poser in a parka gets to face off with a royally ticked off Dr. Horrible. In the ensuing battle (Horrible blasting at a fleeing Johnny Snow) Penny thaws and reawakens, the shards still embedded in her turning her into the living embodiment of the death ray, the apocalyptic supervillain Copperhead.
By Vrakanas at 12:10 PM ON 04/23/09

To anyone out there who thinks Dr H is a copy of Dr Steel in any way... can I just say Yzma? Emperor's New Groove, Disney, 2000, lab-coat, goggle and glove-wearing villain, and yes, being a Disney film lots of singing. I'm pretty sure that pre-dates Dr Steel. It's funny BECAUSE it's a clichee people. The lab-coat-wearing villain goes all the way back to the silent film days. No one is copying anyone. Or no one still alive at any rate.
Dr Horrible is one of the best, most original things to ever come out of the internet. I bought the itunes download, and the DVD and have lent it out to a bunch of people so they'd buy it too. I can't wait for more!

Twin is definitely the way to go... Penny Twin snuggles all up close to Dr. Horrible, luring him in t the big trap... Meanwhile Hammer is slowly going mad because he wants Penny Twin but she's all over Horrible, forcing Hammer to do some pretty cruel stuff to Horrible... So while Hammer is being mean, and Horrible is just trying to reclaim what he never had with Penny, Penny Twin finds herself in the dilema of carrying out her revenge despite her growing feeling for Horrible when she sees the creamy goodness buried inside of him...

By bosstyn at 1:07 PM ON 06/30/09

The Penny bot is definitely a good idea. Especially if Penny was a sort of super hero, and it was hers. I think the blood when she died was too dark. It could be oil. And maybe the reason she was the only one hurt was she magnetized the shrapnel. Anyway, a sequel must be made.

This will SOOOOOOO be a feature film. And I disagree about it not being a musical. Songs always make shows way more fun to watch. I can't imagine a Dr Horrible sequel without singing.
Dr Horrible should take a very young prisoner and raise them to be as evil as he is. Then, when they are about 13-15 years old, *they* should get into the Evil League of Evil, becoming the youngest supervillain ever.
(You'd be surprised how long I'm awake in bed thinking about this stuff.)
By Aestriel at 8:34 PM ON 10/07/09
Whoa whoa... the idea of an evil twin isn't even appealing to me. Now given the foundation set by a musical almost allows cliche's, It's obviously an unnappealing medium... an Evil Penny? It really makes no sense even as an evil twin.
Now the Penny bot idea is okay... but again... not really appealing to me. It could be done if it were done right.
I honestly think the best thing I saw mentioned was penny as like a haunting. (that or alternate dimension stuff).
I like the idea of a role reversal possibility. Where Captain Hammer turns to evil after his defeat and Dr. Horrible ends up becoming good again due to his haunted mind.
Of course you want to put enough emphasis on his evil deeds to where he isn't a joke.
By badhorse at 11:50 PM ON 10/10/09
They mentioned another evil mastermind called "Hourglass" who was probably able to travel time somehow. So, Dr. Horrible can just go back in time with Hourglass's help to alter the event so Penny doesn't die.

What do they mean they don't wan to "be beholden to anybody"???????? They were immediately beholden to everybody when they gave us the ending that they did!!!! (Poetic as it was, the story seemed unfinished....)
And since Dr. Horrible is now turned toward evil, why not have his freeze ray malfunction and take him back in time to before Penny's death? That way they could kill her off poetically a second time and make way for an EPIC WIN third production!
By Doom at 2:27 AM ON 11/20/09
I think you are all missing the obvious truth. The sequel should be about Johny Snow who is such a big fan of Doctor Horrible's that he is more of a groupie than anything. That is why he wants to be Doctor Horrible's nemesis and Captain Hammer and Horrible have to team up to kill Johnny Snow. Penny should be his consciense talking, interupting at the worst times possible and Moist should be his henchman. Also Johnny Snow should be played by James Marsters!!!! English FTW!!!!
By Bryda at 3:11 AM ON 12/07/09
how about getting our beloved Doctor Horrible a woman who will truly appreciate him and love him back rather than trying to resurrect the sort of girl who would fall for Captain Hammer? like maybe me? If Penny is absolutely necessary to the sequel, I vote for time travel. Maybe he messes up his own past trying to save her...
By mason at 12:17 AM ON 12/19/09
ok here is what you do, you could have a prequel and talk about how it all got started like how he became Dr Horrible and met Hammer. OR you could do a sequel and have it about Billy/Horrible trying to figure out what to do next now that he is in the Evil League of Evil. Have the secret of Billy being Dr. Horrible reviled to someone that he loves the most.
By Quill at 9:37 PM ON 12/28/09
@ Hydroxide Holly: they don't want to be beholdin' to a company- ie, if they made a movie, they weren't referring to us.

I'm going to have to side with the Penny bot as well. I really think that a zombie is a bad idea and would take away from the simple elegance of Dr. Horrible. But the possibility of a time machine is DEFINITELY an option. That option opens up a jar of worms as far as messing up the plot, but it's still something to consider in my opinion.
By JujuMagumbo at 2:32 AM ON 01/05/10
Personally I don't care for the Pennybot idea. I think Penny needs to come back as an evil maniac bent on making the entire world homeless, causing Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer to have to team up to stop her, maybe get some real Nathan Fillion style drama acting in there (or rather Mal style), then in the end, they defeat her and she becomes good again, but dies once more.
By Sheila at 10:19 AM ON 01/07/10

Ok, call me a kill joy, but I actually don
t like the idea of a sequel. I ;like movies to stay the beautiful magic of 1. Sequels kind of just seem to be wanting to make more money, while the original is a product of passion. If they do make one, my vote is that they keep it a small web-based movie. The LAST thing I want is for it to become mainstream!!!! And Penny could be in flashbacks.. That Penny Bot idea actually seemed pretty cool. Dr Horrible could make an AI Penny, with like, her face and personality. But it just wouldn't be her... Which could be rather good for a storyline. Internal conflict.

Felicia does need to return (shes the queen of web series), I vote that she be brought back from the dead(by Dr Horrible or other methods) and due to her now loss of everything good in her life, she become a super-evil villain. So evil that she destroys the Evil League of Evil, sets herself up as ruler and Dr Horrbile wants the old "good" Penny back. She'd be way more interesting as a supervillain, but I guess she could also be a hero and be at odds with Dr Horrible.

Okay no offense to any of you guys, but when in any movies had bringing back the dead turned out good? and using a time machine always changes the future and it's never for the better. messing with the past or dead always has consequences don't be stupid.
