Michael Caine calls Christian Bale's Terminator meltdown 'out of character'

Michael Caine calls Christian Bale\'s \<i\>Terminator\<\/i\> meltdown \'out of character\'

Michael Caine, who co-starred in three movies with Christian Bale, told a group of reporters that Bale's highly publicized outburst on the set of Terminator Salvation was unlike the Bale he knows. Bale shouted obscenities at a cinematographer who walked through the shot during a take.

"That stunned me, that did, because he's not like that at all," Caine said in a group interview on Tuesday in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting the drama Is Anybody There? "I mean, I'm more like that than he is. You're liable to get [worse] off of me if you walk around screwing up my takes, but I would never imagine Christian doing that. It's completely out of character. I was stunned when I saw it on the news."

Indeed, Caine remembers a far worse outburst of his own, which was not leaked in the media back in 1970. "I lost my temper on a movie years ago," he said. "I was doing a movie called The Last Valley, and James Clavell was the director. I'm not a very good horseman, and I told them, and they put me on this horse that they knew was a killer. It ran away with me for two miles, and I brought it back at a slow pace. Then I got off, and all the unit were laughing. Then I started, and I outdid Christian by about 30 minutes with more language than he knew."

Director Clavell then taught Caine a lesson he implements some 30 years later. "James Clavell broke the crew for an hour and said, 'Let's have a cup of tea,'" Caine said. "So we went and had a cup of tea. James Clavell was captured in Hong Kong when he was 14 by Japanese and spent the first part of his life in a Japanese prison camp. He said to me, 'The way I survived is I became Japanese in mentality. So I knew where they were coming from in their treatment of us, and I knew where I should be. The one thing the Japanese never do is they never lose their temper, because anger is an emotion that you should never show to strangers because you expose too much of yourself. You must never expose yourself like that to strangers.' He gave me this long lecture on the Japanese and anger, and I have never lost my temper on a set since. I go home and scream at the kids, but I've never lost my temper on a set since."

With that in mind, Caine has not yet had a chance to reach out to his Batman and Prestige co-star. Bale should expect an earful next time they meet. "I haven't seen him since," Caine said. "No. When I meet him, I'm going to say, 'What the f--k are you doing?'"

Bale has much to learn if he want to enter the ProLeage of raging actors. He is but a shadow of Klaus Kinski, yet.

Once again, it would seem that Bale was only human, and had a bad day... Who'd think that of an actor? And Michael Cain, too... And he's a "Sir" and all... What is the world coming to?

There are too many people with video enabled phones. The guy who shared the video should be caned, made to apologize to Bale and never employed in the business again.

The whole thing should have been handled privately and never made public. Caine said that his outburst was never leaked to the media. None of what Bale said should have been either.

Anyone who has heard the recording, and actually listened to what Bale was saying in it, will hear that the person Bale was yelling at had been warned several times prior to that about disrupting the scene, like he was doing, while they were filming. Although Bale has publicly apologized since, and said that he apologized to the man on the set that same day, Bale was right for getting angry. Sure, he probably could have phrased a few things differently, but Bale was also right to call the person unprofessional. You don't disrupt a scene when filming is taking place, and you don't distract the actors while they're trying to perform. It's just not done. The fact that the guy had been warned several times prior is bad enough. Someone should have said something then. The director should have had the set under control. If he had, Bale wouldn't have been brought to the point where he became so upset that he just lost it, and unloaded on the guy. Instead of trying to build a huge taboid story out of the incident, people should listen to what Bale was saying. It's the DP that is to blame, and the director for not having control of his set, not Bale. Bale shouldn't have had to apologize either. The DP should have, but then that doesn't make cheap headlines, and sell stories.

I totally agree with BaleWasRight and others. I think people need to grow up a bit. People flip out and others get yelled at. It isn't pleasant and in a utopia, it would never happen because we'd all be one big happy hug-crazy family, but it does. You apologize, shake hands, learn from it, and move on.

Great story from Sir Michael, by the way! He's absolutely right. As a teacher, I agree that you simply cannot lose it in front of students. You show all your cards if you do.

More importantly, you can't swear in front of them or that's the ballgame. And God forbid one of the little SOBs captures it on their cellphone. No matter what the kid did to get you so angry, you'll have no recourse if you lose your temper or swear.

So I just do what Sir Michael said: Go home and scream at the kids. :)

I love Michael Caine's work. I even have a soft spot in my heart for his Scrooge in A Muppet Christmas Carol. This isn't the first report of Christian Bale losing his temper on set. I remember some wild stories about the set of Batman: Dark Knight. Those could all just be rumours though but this certainly doesn't help. I feel old as I realize I once had a crush on Bale's character in Newsies when I was nine...

'I go home and scream at the kids, but I've never lost my temper on a set since.'

Not the best lesson in the world. 'So don't get angry at strangers. Lash out at family instead.' I love Michael Caine but the word wisened does not come to mind with this poorly worded quote.

Again.... Jeez when will they ever drop this.... After every single actor in hollywood has their say about it.... I'm sick and tired of hearing about it, so who's next to comment about it.... Christopher Nolan, Hugh Jackman, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, come on you guys go ahead have your say about Bale's outburst, because we all already know you've never done it....

I figure Caine be the first to think since he's had an outburst it's best to just let it go. Nope it justs sounds like Caine is up to start something now. I've always thought Caine as this wise actor who comes in and gives hope to the those conflicted with their own personal problems, it seems as if he's the type to give advice rather than a lecture.

Bale I really hope he starts acting like a civilized person from now on, cause I'm sure he's tired of hearing about this long-rant about his outburst as much as I am.

I do not support Bale's attitude on that situation, but sure do realize stuff like that happens. Bale screwed up and then apologized let it go. Besides what kind of hypocrite gets nasty and talks poorly about a person who did it to someone else....

And Caine goes home to scream at the kids for his frusteration at work.... That seems a lot worse than yelling at an adult. Better watch yourself there Caine upset the wrong person with that you may see social services visiting your doorstep.

THIS IS NOT NEWS! I do not care if he yells at some one on set or not. NOR should anyone! IF HE SHOT THE GUY that would be news! stop wasting my time!

By sarah at 2:49 AM ON 04/02/09

I'm so tired of hearing bale's rant.
What's the big deal?
He is not a god or saint.
Imo he is perfectionist, great actor with stunning looks.

By James Mac at 1:19 PM ON 04/02/09

I believe Michael Caine was kidding when he said he screamed at his kids. I'm sure it will be all over ET in HD tonight.

By J min at 2:46 PM ON 04/02/09

BaleWasRight, I'm totally agree with you. I heard that CB had asked the DP professionally and calmly several times to stop moving around and "tweaking" the lights during filming.
And that amateur idiot DP ignored CB's talk. It was an emotional scene, and he distracted CB and Bryce while eating his conflabitt hotdog.
It's the DP that is to blame, and the director not CB.
It's disgusting.
