NBC cuts Heroes episode order for season four

NBC cuts \<i\>Heroes\<\/i\> episode order for season four

TVGuide.com reports that NBC has cut the number of episodes it will order for Heroes' fourth season, down to 18-20 from 25 this season.

Citing a report in Ad Age, the site says that the cutbacks were ordered because the show's latest episodes may have reinvigorated fans, but a series of complicated and wide-ranging storylines cost the show ratings in season two and earlier this season.

NBC will also have five fewer prime-time hours to fill in the 2009-'10 season as Jay Leno will take over the 10 p.m. timeslot on weekdays.

The reduced order is part of a trend: ABC ordered only 16-17 episodes of Lost in recent seasons, and CBS's Harper's Island has a 13-episode format that could be repeated.

The last episodes have NOT reinvigorated me. I'm a fan and I have been since day one. Season 3 has been uneven at best and pointless and lacking focus at worst.

I'm hoping that season 4 with the limited number of episodes allows the writers to FOCUS and stop making it up and re-writing the show's on mythology as they go along.

I really want Heroes to get back to how compelling and interesting it was in Season 1 (excluding that let down of a finale).

NBC will also be airing the Winter Olympics in January 2010. Heroes would have had to take at least a 2 month hiatus during that time. Seeing as how both Lost & 24 have done well with shorter seasons, this seems like a good idea.

I know a lot of people think Heroes deserves to be canceled and while I agree that it's lost its way, I think that it has improved and that it deserves another chance - if only to wrap up the show to give those that do appreciate it an arguably satisfying ending.

It wasn't the complicated storyline of S2 that drove me out. It was the return of Sylar. The character was a dead-end, and should have stayed dead. Tried watching first part of S2 by fast-forwarding through his bits, but decided it wasn't worth it.

I think the series can turn around if the writers get their act together and concentrate on an actual ongoing plot instead of a new crazy adventure every season. That's what we all thought was going to happen in season 1. Start small working your way to big. Kring thought start small, then start small again. Just build the show towards something that can span across a couple of seasons.

THE PAST FEW EPISODES HAVE BEEN A FEW OF THE WORST EVER. I will continue to watch as long as the show stays on demand via verizon and have seen every episode. I had no problem with season two, outside of it being cut short. However, the last few episodes of this season have been boring and sometimes downright aweful. Sylar ripping off psycho is even more annoying than The Fly ripoff they had last season with the doctor. However, beyond that, the past several episodes have had very little action (seaving money?) and, here's the part that really bothers me: If Kuresh's father knew there were people with powers, while all the original hubub about him going off to America to, "find," people with powers. It just doesn't make any sense. Also, now one old bald guy without super powers can threaten all the heroes? Please, some big bad would have killed him in a minute if the show was still following real-world logic. I hear the original writer is coming back. I hope this show is returned to it's former glory.

"Seeing as how both Lost & 24 have done well with shorter seasons, this seems like a good idea."

24 doesn't have a shorter season. It always was and still is 24 episodes per year. (otherwise they couldn't have the 24 hour day) The only difference between now and when they started is that now start their season in January instead of September (like they used to) and go from start to finish with no breaks in between episodes.

The first half of season three was terrible. Saying it was amateur writing would be insulting amateurs with talent. It has gotten slightly better in the past few episodes, but not yet as good as the first season was. My biggest problem has been motivations. No one seems to do anything that makes any sense. People's reactions to what they are confronted with do not make any sense. And Hiro acting the baffoon after all he's learned and through the death of his father does not make any sense. (Hiro is essentially stupid as a wooden post this season and twice as clumsy.) The only thing I like is Claire's new haircut. It reminds me of Kira the Gelfling from The Dark Crystal. They blew an opportunity to write a beautiful series that could have lasted many seasons. The writing had better improve, or I am checking out as a fan.

I have 5 episodes stored on Tivo that I've not watched and frankly dont really feel motivated to see right now. Meh...

Since Peter's powers have been changed, I can't really get into it. I haven't watched the past 5 episodes due to all the characters changing.

By ctmm at 5:18 PM ON 04/23/09

would like to see heroes series end and keep chuck on tv.

By DJ Jarak at 5:26 PM ON 04/23/09

Heroes is better now so they're gonna cut down the episodes. The logic of this eludes me.

By anricat at 5:30 PM ON 04/23/09

And what's the deal with Claire's really god-awful wigs all season. They're just bad bad. And suddenly a couple of episodes she has bangs now? "Oh no problem, I'm being hunted, I'll just slip over to the salon and get a haircut." Huh?

By b nimble b quick at 6:41 PM ON 04/23/09

I am...cancelled.

By Al at 6:44 PM ON 04/23/09

I'm hoping that Heroes gets a better shot and ratings in the coming season.

Dollhouse is expected to be cancelled even when the season improved with story and characters. Sarah Connor is dead as well, despite having the movie coming up soon to boost viewership.

If Heroes can't manage compelling stories that remain grounded in the original concept (regular people dealing with superhuman abilities) then maybe it's best left to fail and the first season will always be the one that set the bar.

By Nevindoss at 7:08 PM ON 04/23/09

Lately, Heroes feels like "The Syler Show". Since he continues to gain more and more powers and Peter can only posess one at a time, there is no balance to the show any more. I can't imagine how they can possible wrap up the story arc in the remaining episode (2 hour finale, maybe?). Heaven help us all if they drag the carnage of this dismal season into Season 5. I want to like this, but there are just too many problems this year, as many others have stated above.

By Cyrus at 10:45 PM ON 04/23/09

Heroes sucks now. The whole show is so predictable. I used to actually care about these characters, now the show is only about plot (even if it does have a billion holes in it) and ripping of mutant powers. LAME. Characters that should have died or been written off a long time ago (Clair) do not make sense anymore. It's all the same bullshit going in circles.

The show is dead.

I just do not see the horrible show you are talking about. Nothing is perfect but as far as entertainment goes I have thoroughly enjoyed every episode and look forward to each one. I do not understand all of the twists and turn but I am confident they will make some sense before this show is finished. Maybe if the fans were not so hard to please our favorite shows might not get axed so easily. Just my opinion take it or leave it.

By DanDFromNj at 9:59 AM ON 04/24/09

I think Cyrus hit the main problem on the head. The real problem is everything keeps going in circles. Sylar gets a new power from some no-name Hero. Now he has a new power and that is the one he primarily uses while generally forgetting about the rest (except telekenisis). The good guys get caught, tehy get away, they get caught, they get away. A good guy becomes a bad guy and turns good againa few episiodes later. A bzad guy turns good and goes bad a gain a few episodes later. The first season was the best not only because it was well written, but also because ACTIONS HAD CONSEQUENCES. People grew and moved foward or backward. Now, even the fat cop is bck in love with his cheating wife without even a conversation about it. Come on! even Senator Patrelli, who I thought was on the verge of becoming and excellent Hitler allegory (The rumors of Hitler being part Jewish but hating Jews) simply went back to his buddies and was all but instantly forgiven after possibly bringing about a Hero Holocaust. Arg! The more I think about it, the worse it seems!

By suprememango at 12:20 PM ON 04/24/09

ahh. heroes bashing. it seems we just can't get away from it. you don't like the series. you believe it has turned into crap. we get it. you can leave now. bob bye.

But news flash. all you haters who were saying "the show is dead, cancel it" have yet another season to cry and moan and whine and nitpick all you want. and truly, isn't that what gets you up in the morning?

Granted I may sound a bit harsh, but I am really fed up of people who hate the show and who have no constructive criticism (which granted there were some in the above posts) but can find a lot of their precious time to pound Heroes. the series is better than the majority of swill on tv, even when it had sub par episodes.

Let me give to you in a nutshell -

season one was mind blowing - excellent writing, pacing and character development

two dragged a bit, had some annoying characters but still had some good moments and stand out episodes

first half of three went all over the place - trying to do too much too fast to make up for season two - but settled down coming down to the end

second half of three was a return to great writing and character development of the first season and has improved practically by every episode. this volume had no major disaster to prevent and no time travel, so the writers actually came up with some original ideas and it was well done.

so for all intents and purposes Heroes is back on track and is only getting better. it may not have the big numbers that it used to have, but 6 million viewers apparently are still liking what they see and coming back for more. if that does not include you then that's life. Heroes fans will try and not lose any sleep over it.

By lordmoon at 2:40 PM ON 04/24/09

@ Suprememango

Sorry, but the second half of a season is not much of an improvement. I’m not sure how you can consider any of the episodes seen so far as great writing. It’s ever so slightly better then the second season but still complete crap when compared to the first season.

The only reason I’m still watching is because they’ve brought back Bryan Fuller. I’m hoping that he can bring the Heroes back to what it was in the first season. But if I have to see Sylar cry one more time… I’m done with the show.

By selin312 at 4:19 PM ON 04/24/09

What I am missing from the show is how they are treating my favorite character hiro. I keep waiting to
see him get back his full abilities, not just being able to stop time. In many ways I watch the show just to see what he and his friend ando are going to do next. I just don't like how he has been treated and I agree about claires haircut. I think it looks very cool. There is still alot of possibilities
for sylar. I think Peter had his chance and the writers blew it when they caused him to get this type of new ability.

By Tarc at 6:21 PM ON 04/24/09

Since Fuller reappeared in the writing room, Heroes has taken a dramatic upturn in quality. The last few espidoes have been excellent. And while I think people are entitled to their opinions, it's pretty clear that there are multiple people in this thread that will NEVER be pleased, and should stop watching the show if they hate it so much. We won't miss you (or your bad taste) - trust me.
