[Update: Fox said Wednesday that it had the copy of X-Men Origins: Wolverine removed, but copies quickly propagated and continue to appear on several file-sharing Web sites. Fox vowed in a statement that the source of the "stolen, incomplete and early version" of the movie would be prosecuted and said the FBI and MPAA are investigating. The studio also insisted that the version of the film posted online was "was without many effects, had missing and unedited scenes and temporary sound and music," according to the Associated Press.]
X-Men Origins: Wolverine, one of this summer's most highly anticipated films, was leaked online Tuesday in what appears to be a near-finished DVD-quality rip, marred only by a few unfinished effects shots.
According to Drew McWeeny at HitFix.com: "I looked at a random three-minute segment from the middle of the film this afternoon when first told it was online, and there's no timecode, no watermark ... nothing. It's a clean, perfect copy. Someone did that on purpose."
X-Men Origins: Wolverine, directed by by Gavin Hood, stars Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch, will.i.am, Danny Huston, Dominic Monaghan, Daniel Henney and Lynn Collins.
The movie isn't slated to open until May 1.

That just sucks. Years of hard work go into making a movie just to have some joe mcinternet can nab it for free over the course of a few hours. This is a huge leak, I can't remember when there was a dvd quality leak of a movie this big this far ahead of it's release. Some heads are gonna roll me thinks.
By Tina at 3:47 PM ON 04/01/09
I will wait for the movie in theaters.

Justo, Mutant Chronicles was "leaked" several months ago in full DVD quality. I know a guy who knows a guy who is second cousin with another guy...
On a serious note, I think that a finished copy of a major film is sent to a dubbing house in order to get copies made in advance of the eventual release to DVD. I'll have to check my sources to be sure, but that could have been how the segment was leaked.

Mutant Chronicles, and Taken are two movies that I can think of in the last year that have been released ahead of their US release date. Taken was a French movie and had already done its theater run. Mutant Chronicles is from Russia? Or somewhere else in Europe? It had also already done its run over there.
Though this is the first time I can think of that a US flick has been leaked in DVD quality before its theater run.

Serves them right. They deserve every bit of this after all that legal trouble over Watchmen. Everything comes back to bite you in the ass. I almost hope people download the pirated version, realize it's shitty, and then don't pay for the actual film in theatres. That would be fantastic karma.
By Facepalm at 5:08 PM ON 04/01/09
Mutant Chronicles was OFFICIALLY released in Europe almost half a year ago. (Germany October 2008, completely in English if you want). So if everybody across Europe can walk into a store and buy this version, then of course Americans can get it online.
The same is true for Taken. French movie, produced in English language. By the time the U.S. distributor picked it up, the thing was for sale anywhere in France.
If movie dristributors decide to be regional then tough luck. We call it the World Wide Web for a reason.
The X-Men leak is a shame though. But I am sure the movie will make its money anyway. It's hardcore fanservice to begin with. Just like Watchmen. For loyal fans, a movie and a BluRay.
By Syberwolf at 5:10 PM ON 04/01/09
I also heard rumors over the interwebs that this might happen in retaliation for the Watchmen suit...I guess you shouldn't mess with the geeks...

Um, Drew McWeeny? April Fools!!!

There's something seriously wrong with people who aren't willing to wait for a nicely finished film. If they're well-off enough to have a high-speed connection to download the damn thing, then they're well-off enough to go to the cinema and see it. I blame this on the thievery of my age-group and younger ones. So many independent and foreign films and documentaries don't get shown in my city nowadays because people are so damn stingy and insist on downloading illegally when these things really need the money. Thanks, you jerks!
Also, I really think it comes from an unhealthy mentality among a lot of our age-group intent on getting a sense of self-esteem by supposedly "getting the jump" on everyone else by seeing stuff before everyone else or getting spoilers. The problem is that no drama is as powerfully effective if you know the details ahead of time. I wonder if a lot of the lack of love for incredible episodes of BSG has to do with an over-emphasis on plot because many have forgotten or been acculturated to not just let a story sweep over you. They have to know as many spoilers as possible and so they are unable to appreciate how the drama unfolds on screen.
Then again, I gained greater appreciation of BSG's first season upon rewatching it a second time on DVD, a few months after buying it and watching it the first time; so this might indicate that plot doesn't matter as much. Still, if you know that Baltar will be acquitted or who 4 of the final 5 are or that Starbuck will die or how the occupation ends on New Caprica, Season 3 is a far less enjoyable experience; I LOVED Season 3's theme of the politics of collaboration in an occupied regime and the love quadrangle in "Unfinished Business" and "Takin' a Break". This is amazing stuff. So much better than Season 4. Anyway...
I HATE spoilers, and I don't get why so many fans and sites that cater to their needs are obsessed with them. Just enjoy the ride. I try not to read print reviews or watch TV reviews of movies beyond knowing whether I might like something or not. Nowadays, so many blockbuster trailers tell you everything but the final 20 minutes. What's the damn point.
I've been excited about this film for the last 2 years because I have faith that it'll be better than X3 and those crappy Spider man films (yes, even Spiderman 2). I also believe in Hugh Jackman and am interested in seeing how a totally different type of director (though I thought "Tsotsi" was quite formulaic and have easily lost to the Palestinian film "Paradise Now" against which it competed at the Academy Awards) would handle this material.
If this turns out to be very good and doesn't do well at the box office, I'll be pissed because Fox is a pretty cowardly company and they won't take such a chance again.
By cplex at 5:56 PM ON 04/01/09
I kinda figured it was to happen, and no its not a April Fools Joke. it is probably in retaliation of the Watchmen ordeal, all I can say is I'm not impressed with the HIGH QUALITY bootleg. =D and I'm hoping the final edit will not be a disappointment when I see it in theaters. in a sandwich analogy ... I hope there will be some meat in that sandwich because I am NO Vegetarian.

I remember a leaked DVD quality copy of Highlander: The Source was out February 2007 and it wasn't released until September but that film was kind of... bad.
By Justblazed at 9:16 PM ON 04/01/09
I have to admit I have seen and watched the leaked copy. It's true there are several special effects shots that arent complete, that there is unfinshed cgi. Some notes on where certain effects are to go. It truely is unfinished.
But let me tell you this the mere fact that this was leaked will not in any way affect sales of the film. The movie even in its's unfinished form is Fucking Awsome. To me all the movie did was offer a nice behind the scene look at how movies are put together .
I already know March 30th 11:59pm I'll be in line to watch it again at the movie theater. Then when it comes on dvd I'm buying it.
The bottom line is no matter what this movie will still be in the top 3 for box office hits this summer.

Serves them right for shafting Warner Bros. over Watchmen. Suck it, FOX!
By Killian at 6:02 AM ON 04/02/09
I've got a leaked copy too but I'm still going to see it in the cinema. I like my action/sci-fi movies on the BIG SCREEN.
By REDante at 7:30 AM ON 04/02/09
According to the news, its the original cut before all the reshoots, so if it s leaked its about 15 to 20 minutes shorter then the final cut, and yea id rather see all the action on the big screen or at least my tv and not some computer. By the way Ive seen Mutant Chronicles, and I can say without a doubt.......it sucked. Without question its one of those movies where it couldve been something but in the end youre just saying to yourself it didnt get any better, in fact it got worse.
By REDante at 7:33 AM ON 04/02/09
if it did leak, its only the original which is 15 to 20 minutes less then the final version. But id rather watch it on the big screen or at least my tv then the computer. And as for someone who lives on the flipside of the world, ive seen Mutant Chronicles, its one of those movies where it couldve been good but you sit there waiting hoping for it to get better only to see it just gets worse. And the monsters are cheesy and repetitive its like a bad video game.
By Bullet at 8:13 AM ON 04/02/09
I saw the leaked version. There were a number of unfinished FX and time code in a few areas. However the film was amazing. I will be there opening night to see it in the theaters. Seeing it online did not change that for me. It only made me want to see it on the big screen more.
By San at 9:00 AM ON 04/02/09
I just downloaded it... I will be watching it tonight :)
Thanks fox :)

By sparrrownightmare at 11:32 AM ON 04/02/09
Talk about Karma. This must be fates way of telling the Motion Picture Industry that they are overpricing for tickets to crappy movies just to make a buck. In any event, all this is going to do really is give a lot of publicity to the movie and everyone is going to see it just to find out what's different in the final version. You can't buy publicity that good. Heck I wouldn't put it past some marketing agency to have done it for just that reason...
By legendzero1 at 11:39 AM ON 04/02/09
If it's decent I'll pay $10 to go see it at the theater. but many people, myself included, are sick of paying that much money to take the family to see an extravagant DUD.
Star Wars Episode Three was leaked on the torrent sites before it's release.
By Seanbtwo at 3:55 PM ON 04/02/09
Anyone who admits in a public, online forum to having downloaded this movie is definitly not the smartest apple in the barrel. From what I've heard, it's quite unfinished - not particularly worth the risk to download.
By Knight Rider at 4:32 PM ON 04/02/09
Why would anyone want an what this copy if it is as unfinshed as they say why waste the time?
By toni at 8:47 PM ON 04/02/09
well i saw the unfinished copy, and at the begining i was saying to my friend that we were going to see the movie on theaters when it will come in my parts, but after the movie i was VERY disapointed,i mean this movie sucked for me,dont know maybe it was the screw up in the story line,as for the cgi and effects well ill watch it on dvd when it will be released to see if they worth it.from what i saw it was nothing special(yeah i know its not finished.but i think a action movie fun can tell if something is good or not.,and besides cyclops eyes nothing else was something extreme in its consept as en efect.)anyway what i say is my opinion,i wont go and see it on cinema.hope the people that will go likes it.oh and deadpool was a great dissapointment(thats the reason i wont go to the cinema.i could handle the story screw up.but not the destruction of an awesome character)
By wolviefan22 at 11:53 PM ON 04/06/09
i saw it today at work with a bunch of co workers..we all loved it i cant wait for the final version in theatres! this film rocked even though it was an unfinished copy! this could be fox's crowning achievement since the first x-men movie

If I was Fox (or CEO of), I would release the movie immediately after the leak! Waiting until May will definitely have a major negative impact on profit of the movie.
