Here's the second of the video blogs SCI FI Wire will be posting exclusively from the upcoming DVD release of Caprica, the prequel series to Battlestar Galactica.
Today: "The Director's Process." The creators of Caprica discuss director Jeffrey Reiner's vision for the look and feel of the show and how he goes about achieving it.
Caprica is set more than 50 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica in a world at the peak of its power, grappling with new science and technologies and the issues they create. The series stars Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson and Polly Walker.
Caprica will premiere on SCI FI Channel in 2010, but the uncut and unrated pilot will be available on DVD (via Universal Home Entertainment) and as a digital download (via Universal Cable Productions) next Tuesday.

Sure, that director's cool and all, but I think I fell in love with Paula Malcolmson a little bit watching this clip.

As a BSG fan, it really makes me feel good to hear how much everyone is emphasizing the difference between this show and BSG. Maybe they should have said 'nothing like bsg' a few more times in the video (Note sarcasm)
Seriously, wtf is up with scifi and this show. I don't think that BSG fans are demanding Caprica to be 'bsg 2.0' But, on the other hand, it feels like they are purposely pushing away the very people who: a. gave scifi artistic credibilitiy, b. MADE CAPRICA POSSIBLE--that's right, if there wern't bsg fans, there would never be 'Caprica'.
That's fine I guess. I guess the 3+ million people who tuned in to BSG for its finale should just take the hint and take their viewing time elsewhere.
With the way things are going, I'm expecting video 3 to be 'A proof in 10 ways that Caprica and BSG are nothing alike--we promise!'

Hi GetBent,
i just saw Caprica on DVD (here in UK) and i am indeed a BIG BSG Fan, i dont will Spoil anything.
The only thing i will say is that even i thought it would be crap, i did watch it, but i was genuinely
surprised and stunned after i watched the pilot.
The Acting and the Story are totally taking my breath away and i really looking forward to see more. If the series is anything like the pilot its worth watching it.
I dont know if anyone who saw it already can confirm what i said, but trust me, they did GOOD if not VERY GOOD work.

To my chagrin, the pilot looked like just another "cell phone drama." The one saving grace
of BSG is that that particular trope of modern culture was missing but not missed.
There were times in the early seasons of BSG where more subtle aspects of the crew below
command rank came into play.
Caprica sure as hell looks like another "what the beautiful people are up to" tv show.
In other words: like every other cell phone tv drama.
So the contemporary Caprica can have all the Abercrombie and David Cole fashions ready for
the target shopping audience.
As to story, they took the premise of The Wild Palms and dressed it up. For those who know
The Wild Palms (not Faulkner) the virtual club would provide interesting plot twists.
For me the only contemporary sf treatment that worked was Charlie Jade. It had the feel
and depth of a novel.

My greatest concern is that Ron Moore write more damn scripts. His voice really needs to be a presence for this to work. I'd love Mark Verheiden and (God forbid Terminator isn't renewed for a 3rd season) Toni Graphia to return. Please! This needs to happen to have really powerful drama and genuine, non-conventional political insight that really challenges the mainstream and opens our minds to the most pressing issues of our time.

I was pleasantly surprised by the DVD version of Caprica--I'm sure parts of it will be cut to hell to air on TV, though :P
I hope they got all the sappy stuff out of the way in the pilot--there are many things in the storyline that can lead to a very decent drama--if the writing is up to it.
Make no mistake--this is going to be a drama--more on the scale of Dallas or Dynasty than BSG, I'd say. But even those shows, in their heydays, were good entertainment.

why do i have to wait till 2010. 8 months before the series?

Just watch Caprica. The show was so much better than I thought it would be. Don't want to give too many spoilers away but you do learn alot about the Cyclon and BSG background.

Just waiting ... my girlfriend and I have a little game where we try to deduce as much as possible of the actual storyline of a show from the limited and misleading tidbits the publicity monkees see fit to let slip.
I lost BIG on Starbuck.
From the looks of things, I'm guessing that someone steals the secrets of Cylon Resurrection (or even worse, DUPLICATES it along an entirely new line of research ... one that works well for more than 13 body types).
That might be big enough to go to war over ...

I really enjoyed the show and I think they are going in the right direction. For picks from the BSG auction go and check the gallery at my website. They are having another one in Pasadena, CA next month and I will be going as well. BSG to Caprica is a very cool transition.
