New Stargate Universe trailer is now live exclusively here

We have the new trailer, titled "Philosophical," for SCI FI Channel's upcoming Stargate Universe, only on SCI FI Wire. It debuted tonight during the airing of Stargate Continuum.

Stargate Universe is a spinoff of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and follows the adventures of explorers who start off on a reconnaissance mission to the Destiny, a ship built by the Ancients, only to wind up on a never-ending mission when the crew learns the ship can't return to Earth.

It debuts later this year on SCI FI.

Honestly, the ad for Mutant Chronicles looks more interesting, but -- sigh -- it's Stargate, so I'll tune in to at least the first couple episodes, although I don't like the look of the cast much.

What was the music used in the SGU ad? Just something generic? Because that was the best part of the ad.

By capp90 at 11:31 PM ON 04/03/09

a little to voy and bsg for my taste, the writers seem to be treading in familiar waters sadly.

By Mark at 11:31 PM ON 04/03/09

Hmmm...it doesn't even look like it would be in the Stargate universe...more like the Battlestar Galactica universe. Could be interesting.

By Jason Chapman at 11:53 PM ON 04/03/09

looks a little dark, but I'll have a gander.

By stealthgear at 11:58 PM ON 04/03/09

It could be pretty good. I was an SG-1 fan and a fan of Battlestar. I will definitely check it out. I Until then, I'm going to be calling it Battlestargate though ^_^

By Donnie at 12:11 AM ON 04/04/09

I don't really care about Life on Mars, I just wanted to suggest you people take the Digg interfaces of the main story page. It takes over a minute to load while it waits on the Digg site to return a link for each story. Why have a digg on each of the summary of the stories on the main page anyway. Shouldn't that be on the full story only. How can you 'dig' the first few sentences of an article?

By sg1spoilergate at 12:30 AM ON 04/04/09

Thank you, SciFi Wire, for the trailer. Looking forward to the new series.

By Entropocalyptic at 2:13 AM ON 04/04/09

I love the Stargate universe, but this trailer really makes me not want to watch this new one.

By Arend at 2:24 AM ON 04/04/09

I can hardly wait for the real beginning of Stargate Universe.

By Michael 852 at 3:11 AM ON 04/04/09

You call that a trailer? I call it NOTHING!!! Lets get real and put out a "trailer" people.

By Facepalm at 4:16 AM ON 04/04/09

Looks like Syfy for soccermoms.

The music and dialog appear to me as if this is going to be the whiniest piece of Emo BS yet on TV. The cast looks as if the only major plot lines were "talking about one's emotions" and "weeping over deeper insights into yourself".

Have the decency not to call it Stargate. Call it "Desperate Spacemarines" or something.

Who has been the focus test group? I reckon it were not SG fans.

By MsLogica at 5:08 AM ON 04/04/09

It does look a lot like BSG... I guess there logic is that if it worked for that scifi show, it'll work for them.

Atlantis works because its a parallel to SG1, which felt unique because of it was based on Earth primarily, instead of in space. Atlantis has a similar basic premise, with cooler scripts. If SG Universe is going to go off in spaceships, how is any different to most other space shows out there?

By Bill at 7:42 AM ON 04/04/09

I can't believe Robert Carlyle is really in this show for the long term. He's listed for 10 episodes, but I wouldn't be surprised if this were a red herring. Stargate Atlantis brought in a big actor for the pilot too (Robert Patrick), who looked as if he'd be a central character, only to have him die towards the end of the pilot. I wouldn't be surprised if this happened to Robert Carlyle too.

By AngryJack at 8:44 AM ON 04/04/09

I agree with AngryJonny. Bring back Atlantis! SGU looks like it's going to suck!

By mochellie at 9:10 AM ON 04/04/09

Seriously, you guys are being WAY too judgemental about this.... give it a chance!

These guys have made TWO great shows already... what makes you think this one's gonna fail?

I'm PUMPED!

By AngryJonas at 9:11 AM ON 04/04/09

They must be trying to capture the BSG audience.
The trailer look very dramatic like that of BSG which copied Lost style. I know it is only trailer but if it is going to be like this than I want Atlantis back.

By Xentropy at 11:18 AM ON 04/04/09

Wait, did they just play an advertisement before they'd play their advertisement? Seriously? Is online streaming video really becoming THAT silly?

By Eight at 12:01 PM ON 04/04/09

I just hope this doesn't turn into "Stargate: Voyager"...

By jimmmmmm at 12:07 PM ON 04/04/09

I was actually disappointed about that "preview." Ive been looking forward to seeing something about this new series for a while now, and i get more info off of a website then from the trailer. I dont expect to learn too mcuh from a trailer, but honeslty with all the info availabe on sites they can assume that most SG fans already know the basic premise of it and could have went a little deeper. o well, im sure well be seeing more in the future.

By jade at 12:29 PM ON 04/04/09

Does any one else think that chick with long hair that say they are not suppost to be there looks like Summer?
Maybe a little River action which would be cool.

By Joe B. at 1:22 PM ON 04/04/09

Have any of you people who compare this show to Star Trek Voyager even read the plot synopsis? They sound nothing alike. How can you judge a show before it has even aired its first episode?

By Decoherence at 1:30 PM ON 04/04/09

There is really no reason to pass judgments on a ten second web clip, it does appear that SG-U is going to be a darker, deeper, space drama, more like BSG, than the more lighthearted SG-1, and SG-A. I don't mind, but they should remove the name Stargate from the title, in keep Universe.

I hate it when spin-offs try to have it both ways, and both audience demographics by keeping familiar names, but not familiar themes.

I never understood why series/spin-offs get darker with age. I see Eureka turning into the X-Files, next. There is enough misery in the real world, how about some good, positive, sci-fi escapisms, again? Enough with the questionable character ethics, and the real life parallels, and the no win situations, and killing off main characters.

My ten cents, I will watch it, and probably like it, but using the Stargate title irks me, if my fears come true.

By Tim at 2:22 PM ON 04/04/09

Wow... that trailer was LAME. Not that the quality has anything to do with the quilaity of the show, but that was a really bad effort if the intent was to get people to watch. I'd say it does the opposite, so it could affect people on the edge of viewing or not. Me, I think the franchise has earned at least a viewing of the first six episodes before I make any judgements.

(And I'd like to once again thumb my nose at the Siffy folks that were doing everthing that they could do hate on Dollhouse: since episode six, Dollhouse is *awesome*. SGU should be as lucky.)

By Jim at 2:24 PM ON 04/04/09

I think that this one needs to go dark with one, happy good time win every time is old. Bad things happen to poeple more offten then good ones. It is time for a sg team to get nocked around for a few rounts.

By darendt at 4:50 PM ON 04/04/09

Ok, first let me just say that I love SG1 and Atlantis is a very good show as well. I hated Battlestar. This looks even worse than battlestar. Horrible cast, looks nothing like a Stargate show. They should have just kept SG1, continued what they were doing and replace the cast one at a time. The show dynamic was perfect. I have a feeling that once Atlantis and Ghost hunters is gone I wont watch the"SyFy" channel. Those are the only two shows I watch now as they are the only good ones on. That and the stupid name change just goes to show you that the network is making a change for the worse. Sci-fi as the true fans have come to love is gone. Its now replaced with a watered down teeny bopper SyFy that shows things like wrestling

By Bill at 8:04 PM ON 04/04/09

Hate to be the dissenter here guys, but I always thought the Stargate franchise WAS watered down sci-fi. Don't get me wrong, I like it, but it's sci-fi for kids and teenagers. No adult themes, no complexity, vast over-simplification in virtually all areas (science, politics, love, you name it). Good shows, but not anything that ever gets the brain cells fired up.

By JimmyDabomb at 8:06 PM ON 04/04/09

It really looks to me like someone in the editing department is trying to make the show seem like Battlestar. I like Battlestar, but the ads that Siffy put out that looked like that (3rd season) made me not want to watch it either...

I'm hoping this is marketing at its worst, and not a reflection of the series as a whole.

By JT at 8:11 PM ON 04/04/09

The Star Trek franchise always had a certain look and feel that you could depend on. I really hope SGU doesn't take a turn for the worse. The Stargate franchise shouldn't go the way of BSG and the likes. I purchased ALL the Stargate SG-1, Atlantis episodes via DVD or Amazon. At present, I don't see myself purchasing SGU...although the art direction for the alien ship does look promising. Also, I think Stargate has had casting issues since RDA left the show...they never really got back on track...I'm relatively certain I could do a better job casting...no offense to the BC casting folks...but hey do a little more focus testing...will you?

By BM at 11:10 PM ON 04/04/09

I am really excited about the new Stargate Universe. I was a huge fan of SG-Atlantis and BSG. I also really enjoyed SG-1. I agree from the 10 second clip it looks darker and more BSG'ish. I just hope they keep some of the humor in SG-Atlantis in the new Stargate Universe. The humor in Atlantis got my wife who hates sci fi to love the show and watch it every week.

By bob at 8:42 AM ON 04/05/09

I did not like this 3 seconds preview, really th mutant preview seems better. I am a huge fan of all Stargate related, i will tune in for at least 3 episodes, after that, it's up to fill in the big shoes left by sga, and sg1. I honestly think that SGA had a few more seasons left, and SG1 as well.

By RAVEN at 9:20 AM ON 04/05/09

You people obviously didn't read the SGU plot synopsis at Gateworld - "Stargate - Voyager" is a pretty accurate analysis of what this show is about.

Essentially, they figure out what the 9th Chevron is for, and it takes them to an automated ship that was launched by the Ancients to seed galaxies with Stargates, answering two long-standing mysteries: How did the Ancients setup the Stargate networks, and what is the purpose of the 9th Chevron. They gate to the ship, launched on its journey by the Ancients a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, only to find out that A - they can't gate back to Earth, and B - the ship is on a programmed course they can't alter, and C - if they're not on board when it leaves orbit of the latest planet it's seeding with a Stargate, whoever is left behind is literally history. Not totally Voyager, but it sure has a lot of identical DNA.

Robert Carlyle's IMDB profile shows he's already completed filming of 10 episodes, so speculation he's disappearing early is a bust. He was good in TWINE, but I thought he sucked in Eragon. Of course the whole movie sucked anyway. But, no matter how good he might be, when the day is over, he's no Rodney McKay.

Personally I've felt this whole SG fiasco started when they blew it with Torri Higginson. When the SGA franchise launched, she was given a 6 year contract, and she moved her entire family from LA to BC. Then, when SG-1 was canceled, they wanted to bring Amanda Tapping over to SGA for continuity, and they believed the logical place was to put her in charge of the Atlantis Expedition. Naturally though, that left the question of "what happens to Torri?" Being the idiots they were, they fired her - before discovering that Amanda's Sanctuary Webisodes were getting big ratings. That led to her having to make a decision - stay with the SG franchise on Atlantis for maybe 2 or 3 more years, or start fresh on the ground floor of a new series in which she also serves as an Executive Producer.

Being the smart gal she is, she opted to leave the SG franchise behind. Although they tried to have her on both shows, in the end they couldn't work out the scheduling, and Sanctuary won out. I don't blame her one bit - 10 years on one show playing a character is a long time, and even though they made whatever changes were necessary once her kid was born, in the end she was better off moving to Sanctuary.

Which led them back to "Okay, now we're screwed. Amanda's gone, what are we going to do for the leader of the Atlantis Expedition? When they asked Torri if she'd come back, you can only guess what her reply was. It wasn't printed, but I know what I and most people would've said if they had treated me that way, and then had the gall to say it was more than what most actors get. But that wasn't the issue - the issue was she got axed in the middle of a 6 yr contract. Her treatment also gave pause to other key SGA actors - Jason Momoa hinted that he might bail after Season 5, since it was apparent after Torri's treatment that no one was safe.

So, who's left? They made the brilliant decision to bring in Robert Picardo to parallel one of the alternate reality storylines from last year, where he was the leader of the Atlantis Expedition- though I doubt they did it thinking it would ever come to pass. Now don't get me wrong - I've always liked Robert Picardo as an actor, and he's excelled in every role I've ever seen him in. But you have to admit it was a real stretch on the SGA Producers' part that they ever believed that he could convince the fans he was worthy of the job, given the weasel role he'd be playing so well since Season 7 of SG-1. He was the face of the IOA that we'd learned to hate, and I'm betting that the execs and SGA Producers never believed that the fans would ever accept him as a replacement for Torri or Amanda. I honestly believe it was at that point when the decision was made to cancel SGA after this season, and greenlight SGU, which had been in early development as a post-Atlantis franchise handoff.

They didn't learn anything at all did they? Contrary they probably thought (and a lot more people I'm sure) Picardo managed in less than a season to turn a beady-eyed, weasely, pencil pushing, bureaucratic butthead into a leader who could make the big decisions when needed, and be a part of the solution and not the problem. He even managed to show he was just as flawed as the rest of the main characters. His acting in the final episode was fantastic - I loved his "matter-of-fact" reply to Dr. Keller's question about what would happen if the wormhole drive didn't work.

It's a testament to Picardo's acting ability, and I can't speak for anyone but me, but personally I thought they should've given him the chance to see what he could do and gauge actual fan reaction before axing the show. It was just starting to get good again - Season 5 was arguably the best of the series, and what do they do? Cancel it of course. "Go out on top" my a$$.

As it stands now, the new "Untitled: Stargate Atlantis Project is underway, now that the first half of filming on SGU is completed. I really think that SGU is going to be a hard-sell to myself and other long-time SG fans. SGA was a success in large part because it was a logical outgrowth and extension of the SG-1 storyline arc they had built up over the years until the end of Season 7 - the search for the Lost City of the Ancients. SGU has no such affiliation or pedigree - it's only DNA connection strand linking it to the SG franchise is marginal at best, and it's storyline (stranded after going through a wormhole because there's not one going the other way, or a different means other than a wormhole to get back home) has already been beat to death by Janeway and the Voyager crew, and even SGA unti Anyone who can't see the obvious parallel between the two is either too young, too blind, or has been living in an isolated country the past 15 years in a rainforest.

I've been surprised before, but I believe their 3rd strike was cancelling SGA before its time. The story lines for Season 4 and 5 were the best of the show - the battle over the Human-Form Replicator planet was just too cool. New story arcs had been put in place: Keller and McKay, Ronon & Amelia Banks, the lost Asgard tribe, the weird aliens in the alternate reality they visited on the alternate Daedalus, Dr. Beckett's return, the Human-form Replicator survivors, etc. I'll particularly miss Jewel Staite - although I'm sure she'll wrangle another job in the Sci-Fi genre, she deserves a long-running gig without any "interruptions".

Now we get stuck with the beginning of yet another group of poor slobs stuck in a distant galaxy by a wormhole, far from home, with no way to get back, searching for some way to get home quickly, hopefully before their contracts run out or their characters are killed off. Hell, the only thing missing is a Borg Queen

What brainfart Exec greenlighted this?
To borrow and adapt from BSG - "This has all happened before; Can you BELIEVE they're doing it AGAIN??"

Close enough.

By Bill at 9:57 AM ON 04/05/09

>>Robert Carlyle's IMDB profile shows he's already completed filming of 10 episodes, so speculation he's disappearing early is a bust. >>

Not necessarily. IMDB profiles have been deliberately inaccurate before. This season's 24 showed most characters listed for all 24 episodes, even the main character who dies, and the early main character who turned out to be a mole. Listing characters for a short number of episodes is often an indication of their upcoming demise, and rarely happens for un-aired seasons.

Hello!
When i first heard of "SG-A" i though "Rip-Off"!
Then the trailers for the second season really intrigued me, i was very pleased to be wrong. Same happened with "BSG" until i saw the trailer of "HeLo" fighting the centurion.
This trailer for "SG-U" COMPLETELY SUCKS MANURE! and for what i heard of the first episodes, is way worst than "ST-Enterprise". But i really hope am completely wrong!

By Thresher_V at 10:08 AM ON 04/06/09

Just an attempt to cash in on BSG success. Combine SG and BSG into one supershow? Lame....

By creno at 3:12 PM ON 04/06/09

what is this emo crap? bring back atlantis!

By Kirk at 3:23 PM ON 04/06/09

Im i the only one who has a feelin that SGU and BSG caprica are going to majorly TANK.

I love sg1/SGA and BSG. But seeing the trailers for both of the new series it feels that the quality in casting/production/music/ is not up to the previous shows levels.

I mean Caprica has from what they have said =0 space . And from what it looks (from the trailer), the people dress in like 1930-40s clothing , trains , cars, even the city look early-mid 20th century. Its like watching a network TV cliche drama. "My daughter died, i want to build a new one" ZZzzzz. Been done. Hows this scifi, just cause they want to make a "robot/cylon".

BSG was original, Caprica looks like its going to tread on carpet that is already worn and torn.

SGU, keeps reminding me of Stargate 90210, again hope im wrong but thats what vibe im getting. "lets attract a younger audience", why by aliening everyone else.

Man i hope im wrong but thats what vibe im getting. BSG was canceled way before its time, so was SGA.

Why replace shows that were already good?

Why did they break up one of the best friday night line ups?

Why change a great logo and name to and social disease ... why why why...???

Why cancel farscape, when it was in its Prime...?

I just dont understand...

Some one help me...

New Stargate? Makes me happy especially when theres also a new Stargate SG1 movie going into production soon. Why are some of these posts negative? If you dont want a new series dont watch it...end of....comparing it to BSG?? well the new BSG series will be set during the first Cylon war so should keep a few happy with that one unless they are the same ones complaining about the Stargate Universe. " You can keep all of the people happy some of the time and all of the people happy some of the time but you cant keep all of the people happy all of the time" :)

By pocimop at 2:31 PM ON 04/09/09

Yes I know I slightly cocked that saying up...but oh well....

By Kirk at 12:54 PM ON 04/10/09

My point is if you go so far south with a francise that it doesn't even feel like it any more then you lost the point of the show.

They are stuck on the ship, the stargate... well proably wont be any since they are stuck on ship...

If there was better be back in time before the ship leaves. Seems to me a way to save money.

Ship=1 set Random planet =1 set =2sets

By blowcrapup at 11:53 PM ON 04/22/09

Voyager ruled. Deep Space Nine drooled. Forget the drama. Forget the drama. Forget the drama. Are you hearing me Sci-Fi channel. I want to see a quest for superior technology. I want to see crap blow up. I want to see hot chicks. Huh?!?! Who's with me here! Have the hot chick push the photon bazooka button. Seriously. One of the last episodes of SGA where the Asgard wore the suits that turned them into super soldiers was GOLDEN. I want to see TECHNOLOGY. I want to see superior races in technological battles with the Universe crew following them from jump to jump challenging the crew to upgrade their technology to the newest, baddest assed configurations or be destroyed. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't go to one 18th or 20th century village after another. If you do I will just wait for the next Star Trek instead. Hot chicks. Blow crap up. Technology. Nuff said.

By Longtimefan at 9:07 PM ON 04/24/09

I think I'm going to be sick. I don't remember the last time I was so appalled by something so short. Wright and Cooper, how could you?!

I fell in love with Stargate when it first aired on Showtime. I've stuck with the franchise and believed in the creators through all the various disappointments, mutations and eventually, betrayals. I resented the very idea of Atlantis, but at least there was some connection to the original idea. I gave it a shot and often found myself pleasantly surprised.

Nothing broke my heart more than when you cancelled SG-1... until I saw this. I'm insulted beyond belief. I've stuck with you for 12 years and this is how you repay me? You destroy any trace of dignity the Stargate name ever carried by hideously grafting it to this trite, overused concept saddled with pathetic characters?! We, your intelligent, discerning, loyal fans, deserve better and so does Stargate.

By Shrews at 7:25 PM ON 04/29/09

I watched the clip thinking that to get actor such as Robert C is a bit of a coup!

My god!!!

Then reading thought all this cr*p, whats the point. Every man is entitled to their opinion but you have seen 10 seconds of a trail and the worlds coming to an end. Don't watch it then and maybe we'll get some positive posts. ESP does exist a majority of you guys seem to have watched the first few seasons. I remember when a TV series needed a season to get going and the characters had bedded in a little giving the writers some freedom.

Sorry for my negativity.

BUT i like my sci-fi and for me there isn't enough out there, so i will be giving this at least a season until i decide whether i like it or not (10 SECONDS).

I love the SG lore which gave us some inventive sci-fi plots but it's always seems to lack in believable characters, this is where BSG excelled, a meld of both is risky but could be good, but i don't expect from what i've read for this to be a hit as SG fans seem to not want to give change a chance.

By planex at 4:36 PM ON 05/19/09

I think it's called stargate universe because it's set on the ancient ship that actually seeded the entire stargate universe. and i'm guessing the ship robably has a gate on it. should be good i think. especially seeing as the entire stargate series's have been based loosely on the reality of suppressed government tech. the chair in atlantis and even the gates wormhole physics is correct in theory. let alone the fact that the hyperspace windows use r hoagland HD physics. these guys really really did their homework on the last 2 series's so why should this one be any different. i know most of you lot just like watching the fantasy in these shows but believe it or not they have a loose base in reality.

By Sci-Fi Si at 7:54 PM ON 05/20/09

Hummm. What make me think they might have messed up? They may have made two successful previous Stargates, but look at what happend with Star Trek - Enterprise!!

I really hope it's amazing, but this 30 second trailer.... hummm

By Pigty at 5:17 PM ON 05/29/09

Just give this series a chance. It will probably be very good.

By Eric at 12:01 AM ON 06/09/09

Look, all this Mental Mast...You know what I mean... None of it matters. This show will either have good writers and a cast with chemistry, or it won't. If it has those two ingredients, then nothing else matters and it will be a great show. If it doesn't, then nothing can save it from extinction.
Keep in mind that we got 15 seasons of Stargate mythology and two DVD Movies with a 3rd on the way, and all this from ONE movie that played in theaters a full decade and a half ago. So even if this new series is a total flop, we're already so far ahead of the game that it wont matter. In Vegas that's called "Playing on other people's money"

By darkdai at 2:12 PM ON 06/21/09

urgh this preview does not look that great. I just started watching and buying all the boxsets for SGA since I donot lie in america and get scifi and I love it and now I find that they are cancelling it and replacing it with a series that really reminds me of battlestar galaxitia. BS

By SG fan at 11:21 PM ON 06/21/09

omg i loved sg-1 and atlantis with a passion and i hate battlestar galactica look at the characters and the plotline and just everything omg BRING BACK ATLANTIS i have been a die hard of the stargate series since stargate the moovie and i think that this is a terrible mistake to shut down atlantis and start this piece of crap ugh. i think that a potition should be started to bring back atlantis or something because i hate what they're doing with this.

By SG fan at 11:37 PM ON 06/21/09

and just for the record i think that this is a huge rip off that star treck where they're stranded way out of the human area or whatever you get the point and i don't know how to do this but i know that there are a lot of angry people out there who want to cause phisical harm to the writers of this series so lets start some sort of online potition that will make them realise how many people want atlantis back. WHO'S WITH ME and i thought that stargate universe would be combining sg-1 and atlantis into one big intersteller show that would be based on both galaxies. but aparently they are trying to fall straight on their faces and kill the good vibe that they have going on.

What a bunch of negative nancies. A 35 second clip has you all delivering the last rites. I'm not going to judge it one way or the other until I've seen it. That way if it sucks, I can be disappointed THEN instead of being disappointed for months before it even airs. Nothing good can come from choosing to be pre-emptively disappointed.

35 second clip and negativity ? I loathed the beginning music of Star Trek Enterprise but loved the show.......Wait until the first episode before trashing it please. You'd be more p*ssed if they never made anymore sci fi shows.
but some of these comments are just laughable..........

BOO!!! The new Stargate SUCKS!!! I am a true Stargate fan and this is just barely a series premise. They manage to blend Star Trek Voyager, Battlestar Galactica, and a #$&*^$% soap opera. I'll attempt to watch this season, but to the makers of this new franchise, BOO!!!!!!!!!!

Should be called Melrose Gate or Stargate 90210. Whats with all the soap opera crap. No real stargate fan wants a music video of lovers staring at each other or some babe asking about our feelings...What crap. More stargate, less Blaa, Blaa, Blaa.....X-Fan
