Mr Abrams, 'old friend.' You've managed to Ruin just about everything else, but like a poor marksman, you keep missing the target.
I know you'll never read this but if you do, could you at least be man enough to say you're sorry for ruining Star Trek.

I think it would be good music for a Batman movie.
By Znewell at 4:48 PM ON 04/15/09
I find it truly amazing that every single story on Sci-Fi Wire that I read that has any mention of Star Trek (regarding the new movie or not) has immediate comments from people declaring how horrible the movie must be, typically throwing insults at Abrams as well.
This makes no sense.
You haven't seen the movie. I have never seen such irrational hatred of something based on so little information. It's embarrassing for Star Trek fans that are a little bit more open-minded to have so many people acting like some kind of rabid fundamentalists. After all, isn't open-mindedness part of what Star Trek is about? Here's a review from TrekMovie.com that, like pretty much every other review I've seen, is extremely positive (be careful though, it's not 100% spoiler free...spoilers are well marked though...I think):
http://trekmovie.com/2009/04/12/trekmoviecom-review-of-jj-abrams-star-trek/
I'm going to see it and I have high hopes that it will be good. Maybe it won't be, but I'm certainly not going to give definitive judgments before actually experiencing it.
By rkf at 5:05 PM ON 04/15/09
Znewell, you better duck-n-cover, my friend! The Trekkers are gonna be a-charging you, pitchforks and torches at the ready! LOL I tried arguing those very points until I actually got almost as pissed off as they were. It's not worth it to argue with them. They'll either see it and hate it and moan about it; not see it, hate it and moan about it; or see it and like it and pretend to hate it so as to continue moaning about it. Don't expect rationality where religion is concerned, and that is exactly how many of these folks treat the Trek franchise.
I've no idea why everyone has such a huge, hard, hate-on for Abrams, though.

I grew up on TOS and I don't care what the haters say, I'm excited about this movie.
The movie isn't even out yet, how can you rate anything without seeing it first?!? That's just ignorant.

being a soundtrack type of guy, i find the music pretty good!... though the end credits.. with the original fanfare is a bit weird.. rather them have used the motion picture fanfare that goldsmith wrote... o well, star trek music is a hit for me most of the time.. though the last few were kink of lack luster in my mind, with 1, and 2, and 6 being the best soundtrack... :D

As bad as some of the existing Trek films have been I can't imagine why some of these idiots are unwilling to give the new one a chance. It can't be any worse than ST5!!! I've watched Trek since its' 70's syndication days and I'll be among the first in line to see the new one.
PS - SFW, YOUR CAPTCHA SUCKS!

I'm a trekkie, always have been and always will be. I hope to enjoy this new movie. I have to admit I'm torn about going back to Kirk and Spock, but you know what, it might be good and they might be able to explain somethings that we previously didn't know about them. I hope this movie creates an enlarged intrest in the ST universe, and I hope that it does spawn a new tv series (I just hope its about Kirk and Spock). Star Trek has been a staple in my life ever since my dad shared it with me. Now I'm 32 and have a 4 y/o son that will be going to the moives to see this new movie, I just hope I can pass Star Trek down to The Next Generation.
By gscpdx at 8:06 PM ON 04/15/09
Trekkies pay attention! You really, really need to get out of your parents basement, get laid and stop whining like a bunch of 6 year old girls on the playground that got their pig-tails pulled. God, I'm embarrassed to even tell people I like ANYTHING Star Trek with you losers associated.

People who condemn something before you have seen it....get a new hobby. You aren't very clever.
By fizzben at 9:35 PM ON 04/15/09
Wow, actually more mature posts here than the usual 12 year old "I hate the new Star Trek and Abrams" mentality. I've gotten so I rarely post here either. I can't fathom why Sci Fi Wire permits the harsh drivel but I guess it gets the site attention.
Getting more excited by the day to see this movie. It actually won over the reviewers in Paris and they gave up on Trek a long time ago.

"I can't fathom why Sci Fi Wire permits the harsh drivel but I guess it gets the site attention. "
Like all the bullshit comments that were made before yours about getting out of basements and getting laid? Mature indeed.

3 Question for People who say "See the Movie First."
1) If you see a red apple with a few hole and brown spot do you think it's good before you bite into it?
2) If you sit down for a steak and smell rotten meat do you take a bite just to make sure?
3) When you pout a glass of milk and it clumps out do you still take a big gulp to see that it's gone bad?
Us who think and say that this film will be bad are using our sences. Why can't You?
After all you might after a while find that having is not so pleaseing a thing as wanting it is not logical but it is often true!
By nurplerofgeeks at 11:34 PM ON 04/15/09
I've watched every clip and trailer, listened to the music, followed every detail, and the movie looks great to this original series fan. And the more they listen to the fans who insist everything be canon, the worse the movie will be. Star Trek has sucked since the geriatric crew left orbit. TNG sucked, DS9 sucked, Voyager: sucked, Enterprise: sucked. Berman and crew drove the franchise into the dirt with their politically correct utopian future where dull characters constantly moralized and spoke stupid meaningless techno jargon that only Star Trek geeks loved. THIS Star Trek looks built for the REST of the movie loving human race while respecting the love of the original series that the more rational fans have. And everyone complaining is going to see the movie 5 times anyway. And face it: there aren't enough canon fanatics out there to sustain the franchise. If it's going to live, it has to appeal to a broader, saner audience.

My last post is not being posted. This is annoying, I was not directly attacking anyone I was simply qustioning Question of Reason's reason for posting what he posted.
By Borg03of77 at 11:54 PM ON 04/15/09
You can't even put up a good argument in here without the blog owner blocking your post. This is stupid and Question of Reasoning, your stupid.
By Borg03of77 at 12:02 AM ON 04/16/09
Now that was a direct attack and they let me post. All I was tring to say your not doing your comparisons very well, If all you see is the good side of the apple at the store, you will still buy it. Its just a preview, your not seeing the full movie, if you watch it, you dont like it, then you can complain. Just like if you vote, you then have the right to complain.

As Sarek said of the Tellarites. They need no reason to argue, they just argue.
By rkf at 1:21 AM ON 04/16/09
Question of Reason, those all sound like reasonable questions until one realizes that they are poor analogies. Here's a better one, an oldie but a goody, that doesn't require eating spoiled food:
1) Would you judge a book by its cover?
By DarkHawke at 1:35 AM ON 04/16/09
Wow! That gave me chills! Of all the early news I heard of this movie, the one bit that I was ALL for immediately was Michael Giacchino doing the score. His work on the Incredibles is nothing sort of amazing, and his Speed Racer score was a perfect synthesis of old and new. So no wonder he's the first Star Trek movie composer to ENTIRELY embrace the Courage theme, not just sprinkle it in here and there! I continue to become more and more psyched to see this movie!!!

@nurplerofgeeks
I have trouble believing your "true" TOS fan credentials when you criticise modern trek for things it has manifested since its inception.
Were you deaf to all the speeches on nuclear war, racism, etc?
How can you hate TNG, a widely praised and successful television show by any measure?
What were you watching at the time? Perhaps Cheers and Fresh Prince of Bel Aire?
Joe Smoe isn't that great nor should he be celebrated. If the franchise can't survive without him let it die.
By FilmNut at 12:12 PM ON 04/16/09
I must agree that the original fan fare for the end credits is kind of strange, because it has that signature sound of the 60's in it. Goldsmith's version in my opinion made the fan fare more "Star Wars" in scale, epic but romantic. However, I've heard "Freedom Fighters" from Two Steps From Hell (who did the music for the 3rd Trek Trailer) and that music is close to a Hans Zimmer soundtrack, so upon hearing the Giacchino clips, kind of disappointed me ever so slightly. Out of all the Trek scores I think James Horner's were the best. Goldsmith's were good as I said above but over time they became repetitive. It would of been interesting if they got Hans Zimmer to have a crack at putting his unique stamp on Star Trek. Again, have to see the film first to see how the score works.
Oh, please change the CAPTCHA, to numbers instead of letters, it's really frustrating.
By nurplerofgeeks at 7:32 PM ON 04/16/09
@Xerxes: Watching the grass grow would've been better than watching The Next Degeneration. But there is one thing I liked about that show: It's cancellation. But then they made 3 feature length movies as dull as any episode of the series. Or was it 4? Oh who cares? I could've dehydrated myself to death from all the drool I lost listening to the mind numbing meaningless techno babble that passed for dialogue on that show.
If anyone at Paramount is reading this, PLEASE give Rick Berman's photo to the guardhouse with instructions that he NEVER be let near the Star Trek franchise again.
By Question of Reason at 6:38 PM ON 04/17/09
Borg03of77 by your reason are you saying that before you vote say for president or mayor that you first do not examine who you are voting for? Or that when shopping you don't look for the best food the store has? I have examined this movie Looked at all that has been shown to me, (Which is extensive at this point) in the Begining when I saw the first Trailer I got a shiver down my back. But since then the more i've seen the more i realize that this isn't Trek not really. So 'im not going to see it. I'm just not voting for that Mayor. I'm just not going to pick up that brused fruit.

rkf Yes if I like the Author! I happen not to like the one (Abrams) for this movie. I do have a Question for you, Have you seen a book in the last 10 years that doesn't have what's its about on the cover or a section of the dialog?
And for anyone reading this, On the New bridge there are 4 floor to ceiling glass panels.
This movie is so predictable I Say that by the end of the movie someone (Most likely A Redshirt) will go through at least one in a battle scene.
