Reaper creators sign new deal, sealing that show's fate

Reaper creators/executive producers Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters have signed a two-year overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV, which throws into doubt the ongoing survival of their CW series, which is produced by rival ABC Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Under the seven-figure pact, the duo will join a 20th TV series and develop projects for the studio. Reaper was on the bubble at The CW, and the deal would suggest that it won't be coming back.

Under their overall deal at ABC Studios, Fazekas and Butters created Reaper, whose pilot, directed by Kevin Smith, was one of the best-received last season.

The pair previously spent five seasons on NBC's Law & Order: SVU, where they rose to co-executive producers.

While this doesn't look good for our show, you can still let the CW know you want Reaper to continue even without them.

Please don't stay silent. They'll never know how much you'd like Reaper to stay if you never tell them. Tom Spezialy's still around, and lots of shows do just fine even after a change in the guards.

Since snail mail campaigns work best (remember Jericho's nuts campaign), here's the address for Dawn Ostroff at the CW:

Reaper
Attn: Dawn Ostroff
CW Network
3300 W. Olive Avenue
Burbank, CA 91505

Please consider taking a moment to send in a letter or postcard.

Why would it affect it one way or another? Shows change executive producers all the time (Smallville just did it this year, for example-and it seems to have done wonders for the show's ratings...)-and executive producers don't often do the day-to-day running of the show anyway (Aaron Spelling hardly did the day-to-day showrunning of his countless shows, for example...). Do Fazekas and Butters even do all that much on the show any more?
I realise that it's a much better story if it's as gloomy as possible but if Sci-Fi Wire wants to be taken seriously,it needs to focus on giving people accurate informantion instead of just trying to make them more anxious so they'll keep checking Sci Fi Wire...

I would agree that nothing "seals the show's fate" other than a cancellation notice from the network. Executive producers do move around, although as showrunners Fazekas and Butters were pretty hands on. I was kind of hoping they'd negotiate to keep Reaper and take the show with them, but I assume they don't have that kind of power.

While I'd hate to see Reaper go, I think they've kinda shot their wad as it is. I mean if it weren't for Sock being hilarious, would any of you guys still watch? In my opinion the cool stuff they had going in the show they didn't keep up with. Among them, leaving Andi in the dark about Sam's secret profession and the subsequent awkwardness created, the combination of Tony and Steve, more of the devil wisecracking (Because let's face it, Ray Wise is the best devil since John Glover), and Sock's uncomfortable situation with his ex, the assistant district attorney chick... can't remember her name, sorry. Anyway it seemed to me they kind of wrapped things up at the end of the first season anticipating no second season and so far Season 2 hasn't been as cool or fun as Season 1.
And yet... I watch, ever hopeful.

Of course, the only good thing that ever came out from the cw and they cancel it.
the cw sucks so much and I can't wait for they day the network will close, with all the shows about anorexic rich people and crappy het romances.
But first I want to see Eric Kripke jobless and homeless eating his own sh!t.
Meanwhile I'm reading tons of wincest fics and having a blast.

I loved the first season of Reaper. I thought it was the most creative new series on TV. However, this season sucks. I keep watching in the hopes that it will improve, but it hasn't. I finally gave up on it last week. As another post said, the best parts of season 1 are absent: Tony and Steve, wise-cracking Devil and Sock. This season's storylines are bad: Sock and his step-sister just grosses me out, the other son is annoying, and the zombie dad is horrible! When Sock isn't even funny anymore something needs to be done.

I agree with Scott, immediately saying that the show's fate is sealed seems to be getting ahead of the evidence. The show could continue without them, and I for one am emailing the CW to say so.

You know maybe if the CW had not stepped on the toes of all the Supernatural fans when they brought this show out it might have actually had a chance. Instead they choose to snub their noses at on of the biggest fan bases they have and now "Reaper" get to reap what was sown. Too bad Dawn didn't have enough common sense to figure out that if forcing a cheap knock off down the throats of Supernatural fans wasn't the way to win them over. I watched the first ten minutes of the first episode of this show and was so put out by it I never tuned in again and joined the other SN fans in boycotting it. Blame in on Dawn. She doesn't have a clue.

So let me get this straight. What your saying is that because TWO people decided they want to work for another channel, about 100 people will lose their jobs and a few million people will lose one of their favorite shows? Seems kinda greedy of them.

By farscape29 at 5:33 PM ON 04/07/09

Yeah, that's really premature to say that the show is canceled because they leave. I hope it sticks around. It's a really funny and entertaining show. Not just Sock and the Devil, but all of the characters interactions are great.
