Rumor control: Is Sarah Michelle Gellar really pushing a Buffy movie? Really?

Rumor control: Is Sarah Michelle Gellar really pushing a \<i\>Buffy\<\/i\> movie? Really?

In one of the unlikeliest rumors to surface recently, a site called ShowBizSpy is reporting that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in talks to reprise her role as the title character in a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie.

Problem number one with this rumor: It's based on an anonymous source.

Problem number two: The "insider" calls SMG "Michelle." We've always heard her called "Sarah Michelle," not "Michelle."

Anyway, here's the quotes they use, which probably came from someone who is pulling a fast one on the site: "There is an idea for a script and to pick the story up with Buffy older and maybe even a mother. Michelle is busy with movie projects at the moment, but she is excited about the idea. Buffy still has a huge fanbase so this is a movie that already has an audience. Michelle is a shrewd businesswoman, so the chances are this will happen at some point."

Of course, avid Buffy fans all know that Gellar, who played the vampire-slaying blonde for seven years, was ready to move on after the show ended in 2003. There was no open hostility or anything; she was tired and ready for something new. It's possible she's ready to return to her most famous role, but unlikely.

Avid fans also know that Buffy creator Joss Whedon is currently shooting his upcoming horror film Cabin in the Woods (with director Drew Goddard), not to mention running his Fox show Dollhouse, and wouldn't have a lot of time to be developing a Buffy movie, even if it existed. And it's hard to imagine a Buffy project without Joss' involvement.

We're not the only ones who are skeptical: a New York Post blogger is already saying the story has no credibility.

No, this rumor is absolutely true.

SMG and I were sharing a pizza. She told me she had the new Buffy script and asked if I would like to read it...

Wait, that only happened in my head.

Nevermind.

Well, he's not exactly running his show Dollhouse, what with the filming long since over and the season ending shortly.

Not true. Not going to happen. Not even sure if it a good ideal at this point. Let’s see how the Farscape movie does first. Wait did I just start another rumor?

Seeing how her career took a dive after Buffy ended, I would completely rule out a comeback of sorts.

I like this new feature a lot. These sort of sites need more inestigating into these sort of stories. Sorry to shoot down anyone's hopes but I think features like this are very necessary.

I remember about two years ago a lot of Anne Rice fans (still bitter about how poorly Queen of the damned had been done and the way the Lestat musical had been drastically changed for Broadway after being the faithful novel story for a successful run in San Francisco), Bloody disgusting posted a rumour about Tom Cruise's company, United Artists bidding for the rights to Tale of the body thief and the prospect of Tom Cruise revisiting the role of Lestat. To this day, despite all his eccentricities, he was the most faithful portrayal of the literary vampire. And this excited a LOT of Anne Rice fans but nothing came of it.

That was supposed to be a "would NOT" of course :)

I would be very much surprised if Gellar did do a Buffy movie. The impression I got is that she was tired of the role. She rejected the idea of doing a guest spot on Angel to return the favor of Boreanaz appearing on Buffy in the final season. However, has she done anything worthwhile since then? How have her movies done? If she did go back to Buffy it might be because she is worried about becoming a has-been. Also, I've heard that she is interested in getting back to TV with a situation comedy series. I love Gellar but I hate sit-coms. So, true or not, I'll pass on that.

Josh is also working on Buffy comics, which is considered as Season 8 of the show. Then you have the major age difference. The movie would have to be shot with everyone's current age. If Angel makes a guest appearance, then they would have to recast the character. David is 40 now and too old to play a character who is physically in his early twenties.

Who's Sarah Michelle Gellar and what's she been in lately?

Just kidding, I remember her. That was very "rowr!" of me and uncalled for.

I've got one word for SMiG to help her jump-start her career again: nudity.

It works! Look at how Charisma Carpenter and Mercedes "Harmony" McNab's careers took off when they posed for Playboy.

@AngryJonny:

You mean a lifetime original movie and a guest spot on a soon-to-be-canceled CW show? Yeah, those shoots were clearly incredible business moves...

By Bald_Jason74 at 5:27 PM ON 04/09/09

@hmolsen - SMG didn't turn down a guest spot on Angel. She couldn't appear in the episode they wanted ("The Girl in Question") as she was overseas for 'The Grudge'. She was available for the finale but it was decided by everyone involved that her appearance might derail what they had in mind so the crossover appearance didn't happen as a result.

@londeaux: Who is Josh? Joss Whedon is the creator of Buffy and is working on the comics. There is no Josh. And while Joss is working on the comics he has also said in interviews that if they ever do a sequel film or series that they aren't required to adhere to the Season 8 comics at all.

I highly doubt this rumor is true. SMG has said many times in interviews that Buffy doesn't work as a movie; that it failed as a movie and requires a season long arc kind of deal, and I think she's right.

' If Angel makes a guest appearance, then they would have to recast the character. David is 40 now and too old to play a character who is physically in his early twenties.'

I beg to differe. The last time he played Angel was 2005, so that means it's only been four years. I'm sure you can de-age him by four years with a bit of make up. Christopher Lee was Dracula from 1950 until the seventies. De-aging with good make up isn't that hard if you get the right make up person.

ohhhh i wish it was true, but maybe one day.....

It's true that SMG was doing another project and couldn't do the Angel finale appearance. But she had the same excuse for not being at the Buffy series finale wrap party. SMG also refused to do any featurettes on the DVD's or lend her voice to the Buffy video games.

This is a chic who wants nothing to do with Buffy anymore. And I just don't get her "Tina Louise" attitude. Embrace your fans, don't reject them.

Forget a Buffy movie and do a Spike tv spin off for crying out loud!

By rosey_angel at 7:15 PM ON 04/10/09

While this does seem like a rumour, let's not rule it out because they apparently called SMG "Michelle". they could be referring to Michelle Trachtenberg who played Dawn, and who would most likely be in any Buffy movie. I for one who love to see a Buffy movie

By Fizbin at 8:15 PM ON 04/10/09

>> Forget a Buffy movie and do a Spike tv spin off for crying out loud!

I'd much rather see a Faith TV series. Maybe they'll consider that after Dollhouse gets predictably cancelled.

By Kindleberry at 8:52 PM ON 05/27/09

i love dollhouse!! and i think eliza dusku(sp?) carries it well. Anywho, from everywhere I've heard/read, Joss doesnt have anything to do with the movie if it goes ahead. WTF! its being done by some other doll who owns buffy, or something to do with the production of it not to sure. The concept wouldnt be written around the series or the characters so thats another WTF! i doubt SMG would want anything to do with buffy anymore. Like Fizbin said, she didnt really want anything to do with it after it ended. You can see where shes coming from - wanting to move on and end buffy while it was still amazing lol(instead of making more seasons that wouldnt have been as good) it would of lost everything that was good about it. But you would think she would give her large fanbase what they want and make at least a guest appearance. Cant see it happening though :(
