The unfinished workprint of X-Men Origins: Wolverine that leaked almost a week ago has already made its way to the computers of more than a million BitTorrent users, the TorrentFreak Web site reported.
This despite efforts by Fox to pull the movie off the Internet and an ongoing investigation by the FBI and Motion Picture Association of America to identify the culprit or culprits who posted the nearly finished movie illegally.
Downloads of the film also top the Pirate Bay's 100 most popular torrents, and Wolverine is listed among the most popular search terms on other torrent sites, TorrentFreak reported.
Fox has been sending out takedown notices to various torrent sites. Most site operators are kind enough to take down the links, but new ones are already uploaded before the requests are processed.
Will the downloading hurt the film's box-office chances? A poll of TorrentFreak users found that 40 percent would be more excited to see it in the movie theater or on DVD, even if they had downloaded it. Only 6 percent said they believed the leak will be detrimental to the film's success.

I have and will contiinue to download movies...however this one I wanna wait and enjoy on the bigscreen
By smegforbrain at 7:18 PM ON 04/06/09
I'll outright say I'm glad I downloaded it, because the movie is crap, and I don't have to waste the money to see it in a theatre now.
Maybe this will teach Fox to stop making terrible movies.

That's one million people who know how bad this movie truly is.
By Justo at 9:10 PM ON 04/06/09
Wow, that's alot. They're gonna have to do something about this. Firstly by suing and arresting alot of criminals and secondly by ensuing this doesn't happen again. All you choads that say it doesn't matter because you think the movie looks bad are just idiots. You work on something for years, you and thousands of other people work and invest hundreds of millions of dollars into something just to have some punk download it for free. That's despicable. And you complain about movie ticket prices then that's too bad, it's a private enterprise, it's a luxury, they can charge whatever they want. It's THEIR product and they dictate how the consumer gets it and for how much, not some thieves on the internet.
By sanga at 9:53 PM ON 04/06/09
Well maybe if they wouldn't rape the customers at the box office pirating of movies wouldn't be so bad. $35 dollars for tickets is retarded. And paying the same amopunt for food is just as bad. Then they release five copies of the same movie to dvd lets not start on the bluray crap... each time with just something a little different to entice you. They made their nooses let them hang themselves now. When you act like dirty greedy bastards you deserve what you get. I hope the movie tanks at box office then ill buy the 2disc dvd set at amazon marketplace for $10. And as far as sueing all the people who downloaded it why they do something right and catch some murderers or rapist or drug dealers.... maybe a nice fat execetive who took bailout money and instead of using it to keep people employed they took it as their f-=-=-g bonuses. Don't blame the people who downloaded it blame fox, the theif who stole it and the website who posted it. As they say in the comics Nuff Said.

Why do so many people bash movies without giving them a chance? How clear of an opinion can you form from an incomplete movie? The trailer looks decent and filled with potential. Yeah sabertooth doesn't have his notorious blonde mane and doesn't really look beastly. Honestly, this is one of the only comic films that looks like it could represent a world riddled with superheroes/villains. I for one will not even attempt to download it and will pay full theatre price to see it and probably a second and third time!
By solidgun at 11:35 PM ON 04/06/09
I don't plan on downloading but I also don't intend to see it in the theater. I'll wait for video rental. From what other people have said it won't be long before it's out for rental anyway.
By smegforbrain at 11:54 PM ON 04/06/09
"How clear of an opinion can you form from an incomplete movie? The trailer looks decent and filled with potential."
The leaked film is 98% of the finished product. If you don't think seeing 98% of a finished product allows you to properly judge the finished product, then nobody can't help you.
Yet you think the potential is there based on the .005% you see in trailers. Go figure.

One million downloads does not equal one million lost customers. That's just something the industry wants you to believe. A lot of those people would never pay to watch the movie at a theatre or on DVD. So they do not represent lost revenue.
While pirating is against the law, it's easy to understand why it happens. The content creators buried their heads in the sand about upcoming peer-to-peer technologies. If they had come up with a viable model, they would be making sales left and right. Just look at the success of iTunes. But now all they can do is whine and alienate their customer base. All those teenagers downloading are the potential paying customers of the future. What will they think about the distributors once they have enough disposable income to make a serious impact of movie sales.
I would be happy to pay for movies and TV shows. Most of the latter don't even run where I live and pirating is the only way to get them! But I don't want any stupid DRM. I don't want to be forced to watch it on one device. I don't want to be locked in to watching it only once or three times. I also don't need all the extras you stuff the DVDs with. I just want the actual content. I want it in HD quality so that I can watch it on my computer or my TV. The same way I can lend out a DVD to my neighbor. Do you hear me, distributors? Put it up and I will pay. iTunes TV shows don't count. I can't run those on my TV.
If we make a slight sidestep to the book publishing industry, a few years everyone was afraid of e-books killing book sales. One SciFi publisher, Baen Books, decided this thinking was fallacious and made the bold move of offering a significant number of its titles free for download in multiple formats. They even made them free to distribute and copy, and sent CDs with their free library along with hardbacks. They then made a subscription system where with a montly fee you could donwload all their new titles coming out that month. The result? Greatly increased sales of paper books. You see, lots of those people reading the free e-books liked what they read and went on to the bookstore to buy more of the same.
If we take a trip down memory lane, everyone was copying vinyl onto tape, copying tapes, making mix tapes. This was just as illegal. But did the record industry fall over and die? No. Many customers who got a copy tape went on to legally buy more music by the same artists.
Pirating may be illegal, but it is only this pervasive because the distributors are being stupid about the whole issue.
By Facepalm at 1:06 AM ON 04/07/09
When has any illegal download ever been advertised like that? There is almost a daily news item about it. I doubt the movie will really suffer that much from it. I've seen the trailer, I've seen enough. That's a movie for some hardcore Wolverine fans without any appeal to a broad audience. Did not work for other comic characters, why would it work here? It is not as if this was another Batman in terms of quality.
By Downloader at 1:56 AM ON 04/07/09
I downloaded the Hulk years ago on Kazaa at 56 kbps. Took weeks. I just couldn't wait. My whole family still went to see both movies and I purchased both DVDs. Illegal, yes.but I didn't harm Marvel.
I have to say that if I did bother to DL Wolverine, my whole family would still go see it. My wife will likely see it twice and then buy the DVD.
I don't think all Downloaders should be arrested or sued. Only the people selling.
BTW, I've also downloaded music that I went on to purchase.. I have to do it that way since my tastes aren't played on the radio
By Andreas at 2:06 AM ON 04/07/09
"Wow, it seems like the mass majority of people wanna condone stealing and reviewing an unfinished piece of work. "
I don't condone it. It's illegal. Dont do it kids. Pirating movies kills kittens. Well, that's one problem right there. Kittens don't die. It's hardly child abuse, now is it?
I just think the industry is being silly. As for their income, they are losing more this way in the long run. Find a way to sell it with peer to peer and you will make a lot of new customers. A lot of us would prefer to pay a couple of dollars and download the "genuine article", with support from the distributor if something doesn't work, than find a torrent and fiddle with unpacking a rar archive.
If a law is so disrespected that a very large portion of the population ignores it, maybe something is wrong with the law. Or the industry. In any case the current model is obviously untenable. All measures taken against piracy so far haven't worked. Why do they even bother?
The cynic in me wants to say that this kind of news is free hype for the movie. "So good 1 million people couldn't wait!"
By Rom2099 at 4:26 AM ON 04/07/09
I honestly think this film was leaked intentionally. I think the studio was frightened by the piss poor performance and reviews of WATCHMEN and wanted to test the waters on this film before opening it on 5000 screens -- maybe test to see if it should only open on half that and then rush it to DVD. I mean, honestly, it's a super hero sci-fi flick, the only people downloading it are the same people who will see it multiple times in the theater anyway -- where's the box-office harm?

I'm sure media companies will make one big stand before this fight is over. Fight i believe and hope goes for us masses. The ones that profit most are the ones who instead of fighting taking advantage if this situation and bringing in new business models.
The whole entertainment industry is shifting from big production monopolies towards "invidualism". By this term i mean that even independent film, music or media makers in general now have a much better chance of breaking through internet. This certainly will broaden the menu out there. First it will attract marginal groups whose needs are not met by big companies, i hope that will spread out to gen pop and hopefully make more people appreciate the quirky little movies and music and games out there. Cinemas wont die, they just have to evolve. Offer something which a low quality cam copy over net doesnt provide. They might even need to evolve in a way that actually force them to cut down the ridicilous spending spree.
For people that say its criminal, well.. Driving against red lights, even spitting in some countries, letting anyone else than you family member to listen to your records, .. lot of things are illegal and pretty sure most of you have done something illegal and prolly on several occations.. so you are criminals. I think we can all agree that laws are good but things need to be put in perspective. Like i'de say fbi resources on solving on internet child pornography might be a better target for spending, don't you agree?

Stealing? I'm sorry, but I've never believed the comparison between downloading a copy of a movie or song as that of stealing a car from someone's driveway.
I see it as just more people getting to watch or listen to something that was meant to be shown to as wide an audience as possible.
If it's good, the buzz will grow. If not...
By Marty B. at 3:39 PM ON 04/07/09
Rom2099 your theory that the link was intentionally ignores the fact that the studios have a market research system that's been decent at determining how a film should be rolled out.
Al, "I see it as just more people getting to watch or listen to something that was meant to be shown to as wide an audience as possible" isn't how the studios see it. They want to make as much $$$ on the film as possible, number of people is a secondary success figure. If for some reason 20 million people bought tix to the movie but for some reason all hung out in the parking lot while it screened, not a big deal from the studio's perspective.
The only media that's truly designed to be exposed to as many people as possible is mass targetted advertising. As people become less interested in "paying" for their media, significant media becoming "advertainment" is becoming an ever greater possibility.

You wouldn't steal a car. You wouldn't rape a nun. You wouldn't get your grandmother to place you on her insurance policy then kick her down the stairs to cash in. You wouldn't sell a baby for crack money. You wouldn't run for President of the United States, win, then send the entire country into a two-front war, based off of completely made up 'intelligence' to make sure you don't lose one single precious cent on your quarterly dividends so your father's busom buddies don't get mad at him.
THEN WHY WOULD YOU ILLEGALLY DOWNLOAD A DVD??!?!?!?!?!
