Spoiler alert: \<i\>Star Trek\<\/i\> soundtrack details, with movie hints

Varese Sarabande has released details of Michael Giacchino's soundtrack to J.J. Abrams' Star Trek, with possibly spoilery track titles, after the jump.

Here's how the publisher describes the soundtrack: Giacchino, who has served as Abrams' musical lieutenant on all his projects, follows the extraordinarily rich musical legacy of Alexander Courage, Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner as he boards the Enterprise for her maiden voyage. (And, yes, we know it's not really her maiden voyage.)

Star Trek opens May 8. The track listing follows.

1. Star Trek (1:03)
2. Nailin' the Kelvin (2:09)
3. Labor of Love (2:51)
4. Hella Bar Talk (1:55)
5. Enterprising Young Men (2:39)
6. Nero Sighted (3:23)
7. Nice to Meld You (3:13)
8. Run and Shoot Offense (2:04)
9. Does It Still McFly? (2:03)
10. Nero Death Experience (5:38)
11. Nero Fiddles, Narada Burns (2:34)
12. Back From Black (:59)
13. That New Car Smell (4:46)

Puntastic!

By Gumbercules is a tool at 3:59 PM ON 04/13/09

those names sound totally stupid.

By AbramsLover at 4:11 PM ON 04/13/09

How dare you make fun of the name of thes songs?! They're hella great! They're so clever! Don't you know the Enterprise is brand new so it'll have that new car smell? What, are you hella stupid?!

By bombdrop at 4:15 PM ON 04/13/09

*urp* Oh, god. I just threw up a little.

By Celesto at 4:17 PM ON 04/13/09

Giacchino got big shoes to fill! looking forward to the OST

By Celesto at 4:23 PM ON 04/13/09

when does the OST come out?

By Informed Misery at 4:47 PM ON 04/13/09

There was a time that one look at a list like that would be a sure giveaway it was a joke. That it's for real speaks volumes about where we are.

By K-Zed at 4:49 PM ON 04/13/09

"Nailin the Kelvin"?? Wow, only 2nd track, and already Kirk is "nailin'" somebody!!!

By AdmNaismith at 5:52 PM ON 04/13/09

Well, at least it won't be wall-to-wall music...

Why does Giaccino eschew a unified composition style for punny titles?

By Gumbercules at 5:58 PM ON 04/13/09

Actually, this whole pun thing is a long-standing sci-fi tradition. I hear John Williams' original title for the Imperial March was "Dancin' in the Darth."

By Hephaestus at 6:45 PM ON 04/13/09

Is the Enterprise brand new? From the previews I've seen I think it might be in the movie but it shouldn't be as it had two captains before Kirk, April and Pike, which assuming they went on a five year mission like Kirk originally did made the Enterprise 10 years old before Kirk took over. I'm starting to think to watch this movie you need to forget the original series even existed.

By Lost at 9:35 PM ON 04/13/09

Yes, Hephaestus, that is correct. This movie erases anything that ever happened in the Star Trek universe & starts it anew. Rejoice, oh mindless ones.

O.M.G. remember on friends when Janice would say that remember the shiver that went up your spine? And that was a joke This isn’t! Can any one after reading those titles even in the slightest think JJ took this film seriously? He made it into a joke, A Comedy. At this point if I was CBS or Paramount I’d sue His Butt for Breach of contract and demand that He gets Mental counseling. Anyone who is still think “Man I can’t Wait to See this!” Ya gotta see this film was done by a lunatic! And Not in a good way.

No, "Lost" (Holy aptronyms, Batman!), this is not a "reboot" in the traditional sense of the concept, that all that has gone before is wiped clean and remade, e.g. the post-"Crisis" DC continuity. That fact is clearly evidenced by the original Spock being in the movie. This is more like the "Ultimate" line of comics from Marvel, such that the original continuity is left untouched, but characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men or the Avengers are remade to reflect current sensibilities and culture while (hopefully) retaining the essential spirit that made them so popular.

In this case, the conceit seems to be going back in time and setting up a different time-line, which some theorists say is the only way one can go back in time. You don't actually go back into the timeline that resulted, in part, in your own existence, but you arrive in the past of a parallel timeline where the first of many subsequent differences from your timeline is you being in the past. So you may rest easy that in Trek continuity, all that we've seen before is not wiped out, and if you don't love the new film, it won't mess with all you have loved about Star Trek. Hell, if you're REALLY obstinate (like yours truly), you can do that with everything from Next Gen forward, including Enterprise. It works for me! ;)

I'm guessing none of you guys have ever checked out the track titles on previous Trek soundtracks such as 'the Sisko Kid' or 'Klang-napped' or 'There Goes Da Judge' or 'Max's Factor'...? it's a tradition going back to Alexander Courage - the track title is down to the composer's whim and sense of humor. You guys are just looking for something (anything) to complain about.

By SMELTAR at 5:05 AM ON 04/14/09

(Another note - you might do well to look up the track titles on Giachino's LOST & ALIAS soundtracks, which are also very punny. CD track titles decided after the fact don't make or break a film or its music. his music from LOST is amazing, and his contributions to the new movies will probably be the best since Trek VI.)

We appreciate your passion and ardor for the subject, but the moment y'all go after each other, I'm afraid we have to delete the comments. Take it outside. :)
