Stars will attend special early \<i\>Star Trek\<\/i\> screening for troops in Kuwait

About 440 soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines will get to see J.J. Abrams' Star Trek at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait on Saturday, about a month before its May 8 stateside premiere, in a special screening attended by cast members, Army and Air Force Exchange Service officials told the Air Force Times.

Stars Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana {Uhura), Eric Bana {Nero), Karl Urban {McCoy) and John Cho (Sulu) will be on hand, as will director Abrams, the paper reported.

The filmmakers worked with the local command and exchange service to bring the special screening to the troops, Roy Robertson, AAFES' vice president of restaurants and hospitality, said in the announcement.

I am very pleased to see the cast and crew of the new Star Trek movie giving the armed services a special screening like this. Our armed services deserve support and when something like this happens it shows that those involved support them and are doing so using the skills and crafts they have, devoting their time and skills makes it much more personal.

This is a nice jesture at having the troops first view. Too bad other stars in the Entertainment Industry refuse to entertain the troops in any way.

Agreed!

Very cool and very classy

By Zacary R Wildstar at 9:28 PM ON 04/10/09

Come On don't they have enought trouble each day with out having to watch a Star War Trek Movie. It's bad enought that they could be killed at any time of the day with out this dren being the last thing they saw.

Does scifiwire breed trolls or something? Is no news post safe?

By SuperMario007 at 10:27 PM ON 04/10/09

Exactly! Seems like 90% of the posts are negative. This is a great thing they're doing for the troops. I'm sure they appreciate seeing any movie over there. This is a cool story and doesn't need to be bogged down by someone who doesn't like a movie they haven't seen yet.

This is a nice treat for people in a high stress situation. This is something nice that they did not have to do that they are doing anyway.

By sg1spoilergate at 4:40 AM ON 04/11/09

Good job by Paramount and the Star Trek cast and crew.

Best wishes to all the US & allied forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

By Military Mom at 8:26 AM ON 04/11/09

This is fantastic that Paramont is doing this for the troops. I undestand my son, serving there, is one who will be privileged to see the film!

By templar0676 at 9:57 AM ON 04/11/09

I got back from a 15 month deployment 2 months ago. I got to see almost 2 years of movies and TV shows I missed when I got back. I think that they shold show this movie in iraq as well as kuwait. Why you ask becouse the bulk of the troops are north of kuwait.

By TrekGuru at 11:36 AM ON 04/11/09

Well I for one support what Paramount is doing.. I am retired military and I have served in Iraq many tours.. To have something like this presented is to a lot of folks (I do know this) a breath of fresh air. They CAN for a couple of hrs, forget that they can be killed at any time... Forget that their son is having problems at school because dad isn't home.. Forget that the wife is complaining that you aren't home and won't be for a long time.. Its hell.
They deserve it.

By The Authenticator at 7:06 AM ON 04/12/09

You mean they showed our men and women in uniform an inauthentic Star Trek movie? How dare they! Christopher Pine is from Los Angeles not Canada. Zachary Quinto is Italian and Irish, not Jewish. JJ Abrams isn't Gene Roddenberry and has a different visual aesthetic and dramatic sensibility.

By drschmidt at 7:21 AM ON 04/12/09

I'm a Soldier in Kuwait and lucky enough to have seen the movie, meet the cast and ask them questions. The movie was great. I won't say anything more other than to recommend that you brush up on your classic Star Trek. There are a lot of little references to the classic series that only a true Trekie would catch. Other than that they the crew was totally down to Earth. JJ Abrams mentioned that the trip to AJ was a spur of the moment thing and only was conceived about a month prior to the showing. He said that acting, movies and directing is cool and all but in the end it's trivial to what the this nation's service members are doing on a daily basis. He got a heart filled cheer from the crowd when he said that and he won me over as a fan. JJ Abrams is cool. The cast is cool and the movie was really cool.

By bombdrop at 7:45 AM ON 04/12/09

I can see the similarities. Real Americans don't want troops dying in a country that doesn't want them there & real Trek fans don't want a movie that isn't real Trek.

By bombdrop at 8:59 AM ON 04/12/09

Locke, you just don't get it at all. The new actors have nothing to do with what makes Star Trek what it is or is not.

By The West Pine Sky East of the Dolaris Galaxy at 10:51 AM ON 04/12/09

Our Armed Forces deserve better, they deserve Doctor Who.

By IsoTek at 12:29 PM ON 04/12/09

Thank you for doing this for our Armed Forces, Paramount and Trek Actors....Regardless of why the troops are there it is always nice to see civilians recognizing the armed forces.

By GYo at 6:26 PM ON 04/12/09

My brother was one of the servicemen who got to see the movie and meet some of the actors, etc. He said it was really cool, and people were really into it. So, I say good job!

By jbs780 at 6:45 PM ON 04/12/09

Zacary R Wildstar, bombdrop, The West Pine Sky East of the Dolaris Galaxy...

You people are ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! What INCREDIBLE JERKS you are!

This story was not, and is not about the FURSHLERGENR MOVIE!!! It's about someting being done for our TROOPS... Whether it is or is not True Star Trek, is or is not a good movie, is or is not FRAKKIN' CANON IS NOT WHAT THIS WAS ABOUT!!! But you people HAVE to make EVERYTHING about that.

GEEEEEZ!!! You shameless slugs need to get some semblance of a LIFE!!!

By bombdrop at 5:47 AM ON 04/13/09

jbs, you'd criticize us no matter what we said. Why is it that only those with no lives are the ones that tell everyone else to get one?

By jbs780 at 3:34 PM ON 04/13/09

There is a right place and a wrong place for everything. This particular thread was not, and is not about the blasted movie itself!

We can post back and forth on that in other threads. This one is about some people doing something nice for the TROOPS who defend our right to disagree with each other about Star Treak and whatever else.

Using this thread to continue the onslaught against the film is classless. We should be talking about the gesture toward the TROOPS here and leave the debate for other threads.

What is it about that, that you can't get a handle on?

By bombdrop at 4:05 PM ON 04/13/09

Wrong, goober. You only use that as an excuse to blast those who disagree with you. Seriously, grow up.

By jbs780 at 6:18 PM ON 04/13/09

I just want to apologize to everyone on this thread other than the three...individuals...mentioned in my first post here. I'm sorry this turned into something other that what it was supposed to be, if I contributed to that. I should have known It would go this way...

By bombdrop at 2:21 PM ON 04/14/09

Please excuse jbl there, folks. He's going through a lot of troubles right now. Mrs jbl was caught cheating with a real Star Trek fan, and well, now he just feels the need to lash out. Can you blame him? What with the little incident with the hamster earlier this year and all...

By jbs780 at 6:40 PM ON 04/14/09

bombdrop-It WAS NOT a hamster! It was a sheet of celaphane...and a foil pie plate.

But I'm feeling MUCH better now.
