[Update: The Alamo Drafthouse, which hosted the screening, has posted video of Leonard Nimoy's introduction, which you can watch after the jump.]
Ain't It Cool News reports that Leonard Nimoy snuck into Austin, Texas, on Monday night to screen J.J. Abrams' Star Trek to a stunned crowd that expected to see only about 10 minutes of footage along with a screening of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan.
Nimoy was joined by Trek writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and producer Damon Lindelof to pull off the surprise.
As far as we know, it was the first public screening of the film ever. The world premiere takes place tonight in Sydney.
How was it? Ask AICN. The rest of us will have to wait until May 8, when it opens in North America.

Wow talk about winning the lottery those lucky people at the Drafthouse were the first, now those 30 days until we get to see it are going to be excruciating

Im really not looking forward to this film ill wattch it but not looking forward to it - i wonder since the pre screenings have started will it get leaked online like star wars episode 3 did.
i didnt download that so i probably wont download this but will it really be worth seeing in the cinema? all the trailers look terrible

Check the AICN reviews - they're all off-the-charts positive! I've been increasingly psyched for this movie the more I've seen and read of it, and after having read the reviews (mostly spoiler-free) of the Alamo Drafthouse showing, I think my last doubts have fallen away. I'm officially TOTALLY PSYCHED to see this movie! Now if they'd just put the damn tickets on sale!!!

"all the trailers look terrible"
They don't.

well, now I am excited!

"ill watch it but not looking forward to it" - LOL, what a gray post. I wonder if someone is holding a gun to his head to make him go. You know, as an adult, you're not required to go see a movie that you don't want to see. Unless you're married of course.

Awesome damage control on the studio's part. Put all the hater buzz done by showing the goods to a small group to build counter buzz.
By Manos at 9:06 AM ON 04/07/09
Phil,
That was funny - an unfortunately so very true.

All you haters out there: the reviews are all saying this is the best new Trelk since the 80's. I'm glad. The franchise needed a reboot, especially after Voyager and Enterprise... I didn't really mind Nemesis.... although it's not something I'm likely to watch again.
By GAVAL at 11:23 AM ON 04/07/09
Bag on Voyager and Enterprise all you want, but the bottom line is ALL Trek ventures had at least some great entertainment in them and that there are a lot of folks who liked each series the most in each their own way. I can't stand how Star Trek fans think they have the right to proclaim things in absolutes as if their opinions are the only ones that matter! lol (not that I'm bagging on you Dan, you're entitled to your opinion, but I'm one of those folks who's happy to get any form of Trek I can.)
I watched the extra material that came with Star Trek II, the Director's Cut this past weekend and it occured to me that while Roddenberry had a lot to do with creating that universe, it took a lot of differant minds to put together what I love most about Star Trek, often times it came from Directors who had never touched Science Fiction or who added a military feel to a franchise that had been created by essentially a pacifist who didn't like the military much and tried to keep it out of what was undeniably a story about the Navy in the future.
Alas, I ramble...
Can't wait till to see what's next! Good luck to us all on this one!

I watched Stertrek :TNG last night and rembered how
predictable that show was ,I think startrek: Enterprise

I can't believe Abrams has pulled Nimoy out of his retirement home to go out into the streets at night and pimp this movie for him. It's disgraceful.
By shane at 4:07 PM ON 04/07/09
how is that disgreacful??Nimoy is synonomous with Star Trek...hes in the movie and how the heck do we know this wasnt Nimoys idea?????!!!all i can say is that your comments are disgraceful and flat out rude.
anywayim excited to see this movie and im not even a huge Trekkie...Trekker???anyway iv watched star trek...never religously but this movie looks incredibly and all reviews from early screenings are positive..good enough for me.

I dare the whiny gits who are moaning about this movie to go out and prove they can do better. They should write their own script, buy their own cameras, build their own sets, hire their own actors and put their money where their mouths are.

Hey Gaval, I hear ya. I am not proclaiming anything. I just think (and believe many agree) that the series has been in decline and needed a reboot if it was to survive. My main problem with Voyager was that there wasn't much resentment between the two crews. (weren't they killing ewach other for years before they started working together?) It just didn't seem realistic to me. In the original, people bickered, even the main crew, all the time. However gaval, i agree with you that i will take all the Star trek i can. I am glad they are making a new movie. I don't know why so many people that like Star Trek are rooting for it to fail. If it fails, there won't be any mnew Star Trek for a while.

You have to understand the type of person you're dealing with. They're not interested in reason, all they know is they're not getting their way. Their parenst most likely gave into them every time they threw a temper tantrum and they think that technique will work in the real world. I also fail to understand the reasoning, I've been a die hard trek fan for 30 years, saw every episode and every movie so many times I can't count and I'm so damn excited about this movie I'm nearly incontinent. So let them have their anger, but thats all they'll ever have because the world doesn't work that way. You have to give and take and try to relax and enjoy what comes your way. Come on May 8th!
By Captain Jack Harkness at 3:53 PM ON 04/08/09
fizzben, you have no idea what you're talking about. I grew up with next to nothing, I know what it is to be hungry. But that doesn't mean if you give me a bucket of dirt I'll eat it and be happy. If you give me a piece of crap movie and call it Star Trek, it doesn't mean I'll watch it and be happy with it, either. So shut your mouth until you learn how to use it properly. You don't know what reason is, but when you say you're nearly incontinent, I believe you.
By fizzben at 9:00 PM ON 04/08/09
first of all Mr. Harkness, your rant proves your lack of maturity and/or inteligence. Prove to me the movie it crap, PROVE IT!. I haven't seen it yet and neither have you. I haven't said its wonderful or crap but somehow you think you're so ultra intelligent that you're going to tell the rest of us what it is. And I invite you to try to shut my mouth, as long as posters like you are around so will I. It makes my world much more complete knowing I'm a thorn in the side of those that are intent to spread misery and dispare. Have a nice day!

St:II Wrath of Kahn is by far my favorite Trek Movie (not Episode) It I was all set to have the theather expierece to watch it again I don't care if spock/ Nimoy or both would of showed up withthe new film. In fact i hped they did show both that way the nuvo-treks outthere could see side by side how bad this new film is. Captain Jack Stick to your guns dude I'm with you even if these kids are to distracted by the jj glitter.

Here's a review of the new film. But then some of you know so much more than everyone else so it would matter anyway.

fizzben, you don't get it. What you did that upset me was your broad, sweeping generalizations about people you've never met, including me, and I quote you: "You have to understand the type of person you're dealing with. They're not interested in reason, all they know is they're not getting their way. Their parenst most likely gave into them every time they threw a temper tantrum and they think that technique will work in the real world."
Now, that's a lot of supposedly informed opinion about complete strangers, don't you think? And now, you want to play internet tough guy too, and invite me to shut your mouth for you? Ooo, I'm scared! Do you want to meet at the flagpole at recess?
You talk about lack of maturity and intelligence, don't make me laugh. Generalizing people you've never met into neat little categories like you did is immature and stupid. That's why I got upset and called you on it. You know nothing about me, how I grew up or anyone else on this board. You want to pretend to be an adult, start acting like one.
As for my thought of the movie, I judge ALL movies, if I want to see them or not, by the trailers. Not just Trek. Yes, I'm a Trek fan. I'm an Aliens fan, I'm a Terminator fan, I'm a fan of more franchises than I can think of at them moment, but if a trailer looks like a bomb, then I wait for the DVD rental. Like the Star Wars Ep 2 and 3, or the last couple Batman Tim Burton movies, to name but a few that spring to mind. Movie bucks - spend wisely, we're in a recession.

Jack, you should know by now how fizz-brain is. Nothing matters but his own oppinion, unless someone else's mirrors his. People like us are not entitled to our own view. He and his kind do nothing but call us whiners, while the whole time whine about it. All of my early posts were sincere, well thought out points & questions. What did that get me? Name-calling. Libel. Threats. I started returning the favor, in spades. Now the ones who started the bad vibes only blame the traditionalists. You've been posting on this for a good while now, Jack. I can tell that you and a few others actually see the same thing I do. This movie might work if it were another franchize. Hell, even if it were a new spinoff of Trek. But it's not what original Trek is about. Even if they don't post here, there are more people who agree with us than those in favor of this movie.
