Wired.com offers us a look at the ferocious ice monster from J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek movie. Click through to the jump for a clear look (spoilers!).

Take a look at \<i\>Star Trek\<\/i\>\'s ice monster if you dare

The creature was designed by Abrams collaborator Neville Page, who previously designed the Manhattan-destroying Cloverfield monster. (Does anyone feel like lobster?)

Page also created the killer fish in the upcoming Piranha 3-D and the bizarre animals and aliens in James Cameron's upcoming 3-D Avatar, slated for release in December.

If the spoiler is the fact that there's an ice monster, then you spoiled it in the headline.

By zonefish at 5:36 PM ON 04/20/09

Hate to nitpick, because I typically don't, but it doesn't seem like it would be a particularly effective predator. Being such a distinctive color on an ice world, you'd see it coming quite a distance away! You would think it would need to blend in to the surroundings a bit more.

By Chamelion at 5:42 PM ON 04/20/09

Maybe it has chamoflage ability and is red cause it's angry.. meh, still, why do artists always have to go so over the top on mouths... what practical use does that mouth serve? Animals are adapt to their surroundings and topigraphical locations and excessive mouths are only seen on fake alien monsters.. ah well.

And yeah, I know its a movie and supposed to look cool; but I've seen cool and practical utilized together.

By dzignr70 at 6:14 PM ON 04/20/09

Not sure I can find this plausible. What about this creature says cold hardy? All the small appendages, thin flaps of skin, RED color?, and far too many eyes? Interesting fantasy trip, but this creature is more suitable for a humid jungle world or swamps. Lets hope this hits the cutting room floor. If not it may just be a glimpse into another Anaconda type film...

By divad at 6:15 PM ON 04/20/09

Well J.J. Abrams said that he was more of a Star Wars guy than Star Trek guy and this thing looks like it came straight out of a Star Wars movie :( Maybe the Enterprise will be flying through an asteroid field and get swallowed up by this monster's brother...

By Impish at 6:26 PM ON 04/20/09

Abrams is just being faithful to the original series. Obviously the creature is red because it's in love with Kirk .

By jbs780 at 6:29 PM ON 04/20/09

" why do artists always have to go so over the top on mouths... "

In our hubris we think of ourselves as the top of the food chain. With that in mind it is particularly frightening to see a huge gaping maw filled with TEETH coming our way.

By thanatos at 6:51 PM ON 04/20/09

...because Gene always intended Star Trek to be about scary monsters and "action snow", he just didn't have the budget or technology in the '60s...

By Omen at 6:53 PM ON 04/20/09

Its red.
Therefore its dead.

By LOOKS VERY CARTOONISHED! at 7:03 PM ON 04/20/09

My 3 year old could draw better than that!

Okay, I don't have a 3 year old, but if I did, she or he could draw better monster than that.

By James R. Kirk at 7:30 PM ON 04/20/09

I'd take it over the papier mache and rubber monsters from the Original Series. However, Trek isn't about monsters or aliens, its about ideas. And thanatos, the "...because Gene really wanted..." "meme" is getting old and tired. If you don't have something original to post, don't bother.

By Gilveron at 7:45 PM ON 04/20/09

At least it's not a pillar of smoke...

As for the "what Gene wanted" remark, Gene wanted to make "Wagon Train to the Stars." Star Trek was always intended to be an action series, and in fact the original pilot was rejected because it was, "too cerebral."

By Marty B. at 8:23 PM ON 04/20/09

Gilveron, didn't you and Thanny have this same "discussion" like a week or two ago on another Trek thread.

By GMan at 10:19 PM ON 04/20/09

You make a good point about it needing to blend in with its surroundings zonefish, but as soon as I saw it, it looked a lot like the monster in Cloverfield. Not very original since the guy who created it also created that monster.

By Gilveron at 11:26 PM ON 04/20/09

No, Marty B., that was my evil twin from an alternate universe. You can tell because he has a goatee.

By rts2020 at 11:31 PM ON 04/20/09

Gene did nor want to make a "Wagon Train to the stars". When the first pilot was rejected he used that pitch with NBC to convince them it was not going to be too cerebral.

By crapoman at 11:55 PM ON 04/20/09

Crap.
Just like the rest of this film.

From Director
J.J. Abrams

Sarlacc! the movie!

Ha! I knew Clovie would make a cameo
She's so Cute!

By REDante at 4:14 AM ON 04/21/09

Holy Crap!!! Its a vagina with teeth.

By sparrrownightmare at 10:36 AM ON 04/21/09

I think Abrams is trying to overcompensate for something.. Eegads this thing is even more moronic looking that the Cloverfield monster...

By TauCetiPrime at 11:35 AM ON 04/21/09

It does look gratuitious and contrived.

I told them all not to feed the gremlin after midnight....

By hollywoodknowsnothing at 12:20 PM ON 04/21/09

I believe that dzignr70 writer is right. I believe that I remember seeing this pet on a bog type planet pretty far from this region of space.

All the ice planets I have been on usually have indigenous life forms that are either white (bright), grey (cloud style) or a dirty white.

But hey, if Hollywood is really just a bunch of aliens they probably don't want you to really know what's out there.

Costs a lot to feed this things you know?

By brandyllyn at 12:29 PM ON 04/21/09

Possibly more Spoilers?...

In the previews, it looked a lot like this thing lived underground and was jumping up through the ice/snow chasing someone (Kirk?). Given that, I don't mind the red color at all. In fact, it reminds me of that monster from Tremors and may hunt in a similar fashion. Those dots may not be eyes, but markings or sensors of some sort.

Honestly, if it turns out this is a Musical, it still wouldn't stop me from going to see it.

I love you guys debating the biology of a fictional movie monster.
You are what gives sci fi fans their reputation as geeks and nerds.
And TOTAL TOOLS.

By Spaceman Spiff at 8:59 PM ON 04/21/09

It looks like a preliminary painting. The final version in the could be a different color.

Although I admit it does look a little...odd

ron alvarez. debating the contents of these articles is what the comment section is for.
I have no problem being labeled a geek or a nerd. Im not sure what you meant by TOOLS.
Unless it was a penis joke. Which is uncalled for.

However...
REDante: YOUR comments were more than uncalled for. They are childish and inflammitory.

By REDante at 11:02 PM ON 04/21/09

im over it you should be too

By This IdeaSucks at 12:36 AM ON 04/22/09

I don't care that it's red, or who designed it. The bottom line is that the creatures design just looks dumb and isn't very scary at all. Sadly this doesn't reflect on the designer, but on JJ for picking such a lame design from the concepts presented to him. I just hope the rest of the movie holds up despite this singular bad choice in design approval.

By Requiem1971 at 4:46 AM ON 04/22/09

As McCoy said in ST6--"Not all life forms have their genitals in the same area." Well, something like that anyway. What you see above could be something else entirely. Now that is a scary thought.

By Flu-Bird at 2:32 AM ON 12/27/09

Looks kind of like a cross between a dinasour and a lobster
