Jason Filardi, who wrote the script to a remake of the 1937 ghost comedy Topper, told a press conference that the original Cary Grant movie required major updating. The original movie told the story of a stuffy, stuck-in-his-ways man who is haunted by the ghosts of a fun-loving married couple. Steve Martin is attached to the new Topper as the title character.
"There's not much of a story to it, so we contemporized it," Filardi said Sunday in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting 17 Again. "Steve's character is a big marriage counselor."
Adam Shankman, who produced 17 Again and will direct Topper, brought the idea to Filardi "years ago, when we were doing Bringing Down the House together," Filardi continued. "That's one of [Shankman's] favorite movies."
Shankman took credit for bringing the remake to Martin's attention. He concurred with the writer, however, that his lifelong favorite did not hold up to modern viewing.
"It was [my favorite movie], except I watched it recently, and it's terrible," Shankman said, on the same press conference panel with Filardi. "My memory of the movie is so amazing, and then the actual movie is just nothing."
The new Topper is aiming for a 2010 release.

If it mas so 'terrible" why remake it? Why not come up with Bringing down the house 2 or 17 Again Again? after all it's not like they were ripoffs of any movies. Thee had never beenany type of age switching film or fish out of water until those two came along.
If these hacks are going to remake somenthing at least have the decency to admit it ( don't call it an update) and aknowledge the people who did something original

It disgusts me how so-called 'professional' film-makers can so cavalierly slam a CLASSIC simply because it does not hold up to modern tastes.
Movies, like people, are ultimately a product of their times.
Unfortunately, that says more for the movies than it does for the people in terms of Integrity and Perspective

instead of complaining about YARM (yet another remake) do what i do.
1.do not go to the theaters
2.keep your dvd spending to a minimum
3.buy more local music
4.read a book once in a while
5.spread the term YARM around
6.try to get folks to boycott hollywood
7.lastly write to a hollywood studio telling them you will not support them because of YARM.
i am totally fedup with all this krap YARM.dissin a movie like TOPPER shows how ignorant these folks are.they can go to hell.

I am so sick of remakes. Every time I turn around there's another 80s horror film remake being announced, and not that the originals were actually very good (with few exceptions) but the remakes are just empty and soulless with not even the slightest attempt at a plot. Now, these people want to remake another "classic" film - and it may not be a classic to the masses, but it is a film beloved by many - and their way to attract some interest in it is to trash the source material?!?! That's just arrogant. And just the addition of Steve Martin completely turns me off. I used to love his movies - his original movies - but now that he's the remake king involved in the raping of many classic and fondly remembered films (particularly The Pink Panther films) just drops him down another notch in my book.
And let's face it - Shankman's new film is a remake/update of a bunch of films from the 80s - "Big," "Vice Versa" and "18 Again" all come to mind!

THIS is why remakes have a bad rap from the get-go, people like this who just knock the original. Why? Why do that? To alienate fans of the original or of older movies in general? Yeah, THAT'S a bright movie. Dink.

I enjoyed the original movie. It was made during the unfortunately short lifetime of the original author. I've read several of his books and can say that the movie has the feel of the original story and that the actors in it do a fine job fleshing out the characters in the book. They're likeable which is more than I can say about Steve Martin in a number of his more recent movies. The movie itself is not all about slapstick but relationships. I would say to the new film maker that if you can't respect the source material then don't bother trying to gut it and rework it and CGI it because you probably don't understand what it was about in the first place and why the original viewers of the movie and readers of his stories that allowed them to connect with and enjoy them so much.I realize movies are a different medium from prose and some changes are necessary for todays audiences but when you change a work of art too much you lose what made it worth seeing or reading in the first place. Go on to some other project.

Another classic about to be ruined by a bunch of no-talent Hollywood Hacks...

I have to agree. look at the day the earth stood still. They took a great movie and turned it into a special effects extravaganza. Very little plot, character development, no soul. The art of great cinematography is dead in hollywood. Maybe they should read a few books?
By TRGarner at 3:01 PM ON 04/07/09
gorehound696 I agree with, I take it a step further, myself, I am a Netflix person, I will NOT purchase a film, I will NOT attend a theater, I wait patiently for Netflix to deliver or I jump onto BitTorrent and get the latest (if I REALLY want it). My biggest issue, is a) its a remake, retool, reboot, whatever and b) they CHANGE THE BLOODY FILM. I mean, do we need another Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Star Trek, Grudge, etc? I am tired.
Also, I use Netflix to snag movies from OVERSEAS. I'm very tired of Hollywood Films. I rather snag a film from an overseas film producer, where I know the film is original to me, has an interesting story line and/or plot, special effects are decent and overall just a damn good time to watch! :)

>>the original Cary Grant movie required major updating.
Does Filardi even know that the Cary Grant film was adapted from the hilarious original novel by Thorne Smith? There's no point in slamming Cary Grant. If you wanted to distance yourself from that movie, just say you're returning to the source material. Sheesh!

Here's an idea... Have Will Smith play a first term Senator who abstains from voting on critical issues until he's visited by the ghost of Billy Carter, who convinces him to run for his party's nomination against Faye Dunaway and then for President against Tigh and Laura Roslyn.

Why do they remake classic films? The only film remake I can recall that was any good was "The Birdcage" (an english version of the French "La Cage au Folles") - as for pointless remakes: "Psycho", "Pink Panther", etc.
Forget this remake altogether, go read the original novels by Thorne Smith - they're wonderful screwball comedies.
By Gill Avila at 6:19 PM ON 04/07/09
Don't worry about the remake--it's just a hack remake of a classic film. Yes--the operative term is CLASSIC. Who gives a shiat what Filardi thinks or makes. Any cinematic excrement that Filardi puts on the screen is nothing but graffiti compared to the original masterpiece. When in the future people refer to "Topper" they'll always refer to the original, not some pantload of you-know-what. It's too bad Steve Martin's star seems to be on the descent. , if this is what he is doing.
By Gina at 10:03 PM ON 04/07/09
Terrible? TERRIBLE?! Yeah, you guys just try to do better. And then I'll bet you'll be shocked when it bombs. Anyone who thinks "Topper" is terrible has no idea what makes a great comedy.

Next up: Topper Returns, with Samuel L Jackson as Rochester -- with an attitude!
By Son of a Maui Portagee at 8:12 AM ON 04/09/09
Welleran, the Rochester character of old might have had many failings (especially in the reflections of modern eyes) but lacking 'tude wasn't one of them - especially with regards to Mr. Benny.
