Universal Pictures to pump up the sci-fi in a Videodrome remake

Universal Pictures to pump up the sci-fi in a \<em\>Videodrome\<\/em\> remake

Universal Pictures will remake the 1983 David Cronenberg-directed thriller Videodrome, with Ehren Kruger (Scream 3) set to write the script and produce with partner Daniel Bobker (The Brothers Grimm), Variety reported.

The original Videodrome starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, who makes his station relevant by programming Videodrome, a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers. The new picture will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nanotechnology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller.

The producers traced the rights to Canadian distribution veteran Rene Malo, who will be executive producer. Universal distributed the original and had first refusal on a remake, and the studio snapped up the opportunity.

Cronenberg has no role in the film as yet.

Another complete exercise in futility. The sooner Hollywood realises 'if it ain't broke it don't need fixing' the better. How you can improve upon perfection beggars belief and I'd imagine Cronenberg is flinching at this dire prospect. I just hope they pay him enough for ruining his masterpiece.

As usual, Hollywood turns to exhuming corpses and reanimating them as "reboot/remake/reimagined" crap. I was no fan of "Videodrome," but it was an effective thriller that doesn't need to be remade because (a) it's fine as it is and (b) it's not good enough to deserve a better version.

Here's an idea, Hollywood: Open your doors to the thousands of wannabe screenwriters out there. Read their spec scripts. Listen to their pitches. Odds are, you'll find at least as many new ideas worth making as you're finding old ideas to rehash.

At some point the cannibalism has to stop or all Hollywood will be producing is remakes, sequels to remakes, remakes of remakes, remakes of sequels to remakes...oh, wait! We're already there!

Screw Hollywood. I'm going to go read a book.

The original "Videodrome" and James Woods is just fine, thank you, and part of my collection that DOES NOT WANT to be remade!

QUIT REMAKING/REBOOTING/RE-IMAGINING THINGS AND MAKE SOMETHING NEW FOR F**KS SAKE!

It's no wonder me and so many other people quit going to movie theaters so long ago. You stupid monkeys in Hollywood wonder why ticket revenue is down well I'm telling you why, it's your lack of imagination, that's why.

Oh god...
Why? Why? Why?

The original is a cult classic, a great movie that stands perfectly the test of time... But it's a cult classic, not a main stream franchise like Friday the 13th or Halloween, so I don't understand why they think the name Videodrome would make people come to the theaters...

Plus the writers seem to want to add a lot of stuff to the original : why then say it's a remake.
WRITERS OF HOLLYWOOD : make, don't remake!

Before remakes made sense for technical reasons : a old silent movie being remade in a sound version, a black and white movie being remade in color... A cheap horror movie being remade with a bigger budget and better special effects... BUT HERE THERE IS NO REASON! Just a fast buck....

The movie is just fine as is, and they want to turn a film that deals with the subtleties of people's own obsession with violence and sex and pushing the boundaries of both on television into a full blow sci-fi action thriller?

I think Cronenberg should try to stop Universal from even trying. Bunch of worthless, soulless bastards these Hollywood types. The whole lot of them!!

By stealthgear at 3:24 PM ON 04/27/09

I liked Existenz. Why not make Existenz 2 instead of some old movie? If I was Cronenberg, I'd make them let me direct, or sue them for all the profit they make.

Yea I haven't seen Videodrome, but even the name sounds really out of date and out of touch with today.

Thats enough I've had it.

I'm making Bladerunnerdrome Vs. Predators Reboot. Anyone who tries to stop me will be destroyed.

If you do not like remakes or reimagined stories, the best thing is JUST DO NOT GO watch them. After losing large sums of money, the studios will STOP doing it. If it makes money then SOMEONE must like to see them. The sad thing is that new stories and themes are not coming out to keep the industry going. Maybe a few writers with imaginations need to put together a new studio and produse something new.

I have a real hate for Hollywood nowadays and am totally sick of all these remakes/reboots.
I made up a term YARM for yet another remake.
I will ask of all out there to spread my term around and tell folks that we can do something even if it doesn't work.

1.use YARM everywhere and more and more will use it
2.boycott all YARM by not going to a theater, renting, or buying the YARM film
3.write a letter to the studio telling them because of YARM i will boycott your products
4.educate folks out there

The more studios here of folks hating YARM and rweally the less money they make might change their mind.
I just had to say that after learning of this asshole YARM as i love Videodrome even if it does have some flaws.
We don't need it remade !!!!
So Universal because of that move I will remove 3 DVD's that I might of bought. That is right guys for every YARM you make that pisses me off it will cost you 3 times i might of bought a product from you.
You do the math morons !!!

Fine, I won't try to stop you...as long as I get to direct the sequel! ;)

Guess what? The old movie will still exist after this one is released. So what's the big deal? If you don't want to see any more remakes STOP GOING TO SEE THEM! I'd guess most of you naysayers will be the first in line to see this drek.

By RatzMilk at 11:09 PM ON 04/27/09

The big deal is, these YARM (I like this term) movies are crap. But the studios blam p2p and PirateBay for their drop in theater tickets. Not for an instant do they entertain the thought that they a producing garbarge.

You know there is a problem when movies you can download ilegally for free have comments such as 'not worth downloading' and 'don't waste your time'.

The last YARM I saw was 'Planet of the Apes'. My God, I wanted to dig my eyes out with a spoon then stick a Barmix in the eye sockets to destroy my brain and remove all memory of seeing that movie. Yet, that's about as good as these YARM movies get.

Death to Videodrome! Long live the New Flesh!

"Yea I haven't seen Videodrome, but even the name sounds really out of date and out of touch with today."

stealthgear; not going to try and not attack you, but the amazing thing about videodrome is that it IS still relevent, it is a prophetic vision of this day-in-age and that is one of the main reasons it is such an incredible film.

I highly suggest you watch it. Also what would they do with an Existenz 2? take the same plot and rehash it into some crap fest? at the end of Existenz you felt satisfied with the resolution, and the story ended, no need to go any further with it. You are probably totally missing the point of cronenbergs directing and writting, and I'm sorry to personally attack you, but you should rewatch Existenz as more of a study of human nature rather then a "cool video game movie". because if you are wanting a squeal, i only can presume that is the mindset you saw it in.

a remake of videodrome is terrible, i will refuse to see it. But i am sure the masses of people who watch only big budget Hollywood crap fests and have never seen the original, will go see it be like "WOW WHAT AN ORIGINAL AND INTERESTING CONCEPT" If they keep the heart of the original film, and still allow people to leave the theater wondering about their own relationship with technology i will be OK with it, somehow i don't think though this will happen.
