We have video now from the landmark event that showcased just how relevant a TV program can be, when Battlestar Galactica was the prime topic of discussion at the United Nations on March 17 in New York. You can watch it after the jump.

The biggest names behind Battlestar—stars Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell and executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick—sat on a panel in the Economic and Social Council Chamber with United Nations representatives to explore what the show had to say about world issues over its four-season run.

Moderator Whoopi Goldberg led the panel through two hours of discussion that touched on race relations, terrorism, gender equality and a host of other issues.

Part one of the five videos is embedded here; you can find the other four at the Battlestar Galactica homepage.

People laughed at me at my university when I mentioned this show at a Q & A among professors of culture and media. This shows 'em. This is the most politically insightful show in American history because it's always been about how humanity tends to dehumanize and homogenize "the other" and about how we're all equally capable of kindness and cruelty.

I just wish Season 4 had been as true to these themes and been as politically meditative as prior seasons. After the brilliant commentary of Season 3 about the politics of collaboration in an occupied regime and the dispensation of justice afterward, this season seemed too much about the religious mythology of the show's internal logic, rather than enough of an examination of religion. It could have been so much more. Sci Fi really dropped the ball in not promising a 5th season. Starbuck had kind of grown repetitive, but the other characters, especially Lee Adama, Baltar and even the cylons like Doral, Leoben, and Cavil had so much depth left to be uncovered.

I'm very sad it's over.

We are deleting the comments about the merits of the United Nations. This is not the place. If you'd like to comment on the Battlestar Galactica video, that's fine, but otherwise take it elsewhere please.

IMHO, it only shows how irrelevant the UN has become.
