Watch Joss Whedon accept the Ray Bradbury Award

Joss Whedon, creator of such series as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse, received the Bradbury Award for excellence in screenwriting from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. The ceremony was held Saturday, April 25, on the campus of UCLA.

Previous Bradbury Award winners are James Cameron for Terminator 2 (1992), J. Michael Straczynski for Babylon 5 (1999) and Yuri Rasovsky and Harlan Ellison for 2000X —Tales of the Next Millennia, a National Public Radio series (2001).

Whedon was unable to attend the ceremony and so sent a video acceptance speech in which he spoke of his love for "fictionalized scientifics, or as the kids call it nowadays—fi-sci."

Congratulations Joss, Alien Resurrection was such a masterpiece of the franchise. Up there with Aliens VS Predator! And how many more weeks of Dollhouse do we have to endure before it's inevitable demise?

Big Congrats!!! Love Firefly and still mourn its untimely demise...

That arrogant, lying jerk Straczinsky won for that piece of crap B 5? Ira Steven Behr deserved it a lot more, including for not bad-mouthing others' writing by making up lies of plagarism, when anyone with a sense of drama and themes can see DS9 did much better and more subtly and realistically what B5 supposedly did before.

I'm happy for Joss because he seems a nice guy, though what I want most is Angel Season 6 or a miniseries on Spike. Come on, Joss!

I would rather watch B5 than sit thru any more of that Dollhouse show.Or for that matter Buffy or Angel.
Firefly was the best thing I saw him do.

By Muldfeld at 4:37 PM ON 04/26/09

To be honest, gorehound696, I enjoyed Londo and G'Kar on B5, but I was enraged at how Straczyinski acts. I have to say that what I've seen of Dollhouse isn't a huge turn on. Buffy and Angel were a lot of fun, though. I much preferred them to the pilot and an episode here or there of Firefly, though I thought "Serenity" was quite good, especially the casting of Chewetel Ejiofor.

You suck Whedon! I can't believe he got the Ray Bradbury Award. He's not even good enough for a Saturn award. He's just a hack who rips off other shows and repackages them as his own. Firefly was the most obvious being a rip off of Outlaw Star.

By TheDrizzt at 8:51 PM ON 04/26/09

Shouldn't that be "syfy", not "fi-sci"?

By ThisIdeaSucks at 12:25 AM ON 04/27/09

Wow. Congratulations on the mediocrity Joss! It's sad when we celebrate a guy who's career is defined primarily by disasters, cancelled shows, and an complete inability t o resolve any story without resorting to a super-powered hot chick. Lame on!

By Muldfeld at 12:37 AM ON 04/27/09

TheDrizzt, it's typical Joss Whedon humor, not a mistake. He's trying to look incompetent. I though "fi sci" was pretty funny.

I do have lots of problems with Whedon's stuff, but he does have a lot of heart, unlike cynical people like Abrams and his friends. Angel is a far better show than "Lost" and its finale was among the very best I've ever seen!

@Methos
Don't forget, that Dollhouse is a ripoff of "Dark City" !!!

P.S. Btw, one of my all time fave movies!!!

P.P.S. But I also happen to like Dollhouse.

Shouldn't Ray Bradbury accept the Ray Bradbury Award? After all, it is his.

By Al at 2:57 PM ON 04/27/09

Man, when a guy wins an award, the hate monster rears mightily!

Congrats Joss. Love your work and always look forward to your next suprise.
