Every year about this time we look back at the wreckage that started out as a promising television season. This year had a bit more carnage than usual as SCI FI's Battlestar Galactica went out with power and grace, while NBC's My Own Worst Enemy imploded and The CW's Valentine faded away.
Several shows stand on the precipice of cancellation. Many of them are fighting for their lives, with hopes they won't end up like Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Stargate Atlantis, Life on Mars, Kyle XY or The Ex-List. Some of them have had multiple seasons to make their case, while others are brand-spanking-new and discovering that getting viewers to tune in isn't always easy.
Here are 11 shows that are in the danger zone and our assessment of their prospects.
Heroes NBC
Last week's ratings: 6.05 million viewers
Chances of another season: Superpowered
The news is good when it comes to Heroes. NBC entertainment president Angela Bromstad has said the series will be picked up. Mind you, that hasn't happened yet. But despite falling ratings, the series has bounced back creatively, and Heroes does well overseas. Also, an extra season will add additional episodes, making it appealing to affiliates in the syndication market. That said, if the series is renewed, look for a shortened season of 18-20 episodes, allowing NBC to save some money. It's also likely that Heroes will lose its timeslot, perhaps to the new NBC post-apocalyptic drama Day One.
Fringe Fox
Last week's ratings with a little spillage from American Idol: 11.48 million viewers
Chances of another season: Strangely hopeful
While Fringe hasn't been able to keep up with American Idol (what show could?), it's found its footing and carved out its own very grim and quirky territory. John Noble's become a star playing the strange and wacky Dr. Walter Bishop. It's true that Fox is a bit disappointed Fringe isn't getting Mentalist-sized ratings, but in these difficult times it's doing okay, and the series is keeping its audience. Things could certainly be worst. Expect another season of Fringe.
Medium NBC
Last week's ratings: 7.15 million viewers
Chances of another season: Predictable
Yes, Medium's ratings have dropped this year, but so have most shows'. Medium does better than Heroes in the ratings, and it's done well for years wherever and whenever NBC decided to put it. While Jay Leno will be taking away its 10 p.m. slot, there's no reason the series wouldn't do fine earlier. Medium has a following, and fans are willing to wait until midseason to see it. And better yet, this reliable series can wait in the wings until space on the schedule opens up for it.
Eleventh Hour CBS
Season to-date ratings: 12.05 million viewers
Chances of another season: 50/50
On paper Eleventh Hour, would seem like a shoo-in for renewal. The ratings are better than most, and they've actually improved a bit through the season's final episodes now that the series has found its rhythm. But Eleventh Hour is on CBS, and CBS is doing just fine these days. They are used to shows that can pull some major numbers. Beyond that, the series is on after CBS's biggest hit, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and that means big things are expected. Fortunately for Eleventh Hour, the murder mystery replacing it, Harper's Island, didn't do as well as hoped, making Eleventh Hour look a bit shinier by comparison. If Eleventh Hour returns for another season, look for CBS to shuffle it to a different timeslot.
Chuck NBC
Last week's ratings: 6.01 million viewers
Chances of another season: 50/50
Despite its very silly premise, Chuck has turned out to be a delightful bit of escapism that deserves a third season, and another season is indeed possible. But with Jay Leno about to take over five hours of the network's prime-time real estate, one of the shows in danger is Chuck. There's an excellent case to be made for keeping this charming little series in the mix, but the ratings are marginal at best, despite the fact that they are almost as good as the much-more-hyped Heroes. One thing is for certain: If Chuck does get another season, look for a Monday shakeup, meaning it most likely will be given a different timeslot, with likely only 13 episodes.
Reaper The CW
Last week's ratings: 2.28 million viewers
Chances of another season: Not damned yet
Yes, creators Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas are leaving Reaper, and that set everyone abuzz that it might just be the end of this devilishly wacky series. But the chances that Reaper will return are better than they seem. While the 2.28 million viewers might seem tiny, that's 2.28 million against "the death star," otherwise known as American Idol. With The CW's other struggles, there's a reason why they've already renewed Smallville and Supernatural. The truth is that Reaper came in as a midseason replacement against American Idol and still did better than many of the more hyped shows. Now the bigger question is "If Reaper does get another season, will it be as much fun as it was under Butters and Fazekas?"
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Fox
Last week's ratings: 3.56 million viewers
Chances of another season: Terminated
One report already has this show canceled, though no official announcement has been made. How sad the ratings from this promising series have dropped so drastically, considering it premiered with more than 18 million viewers. Whether viewers gave up on the story or some mysterious conspiracy forced the human race to abandon this Terminator, Fox isn't about to bring back a series that's fallen so far. That leaves viewers, unfortunately, with the prospect of an unresolved cliffhanger. At least Terminator aficionados will have the upcoming film Terminator Salvation to look forward to.
Dollhouse Fox
Last week's ratings: 3.56 million viewers
Chances of another season: Probably mind-wiped
Ah, we had such high hopes for this Joss Whedon series. Unfortunately, Dollhouse's ratings are awful, even beyond the low expectations that come with Friday nights. While it looked like Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse were the perfect Friday-night couple, neither one of them could pull big enough numbers to help the other. With just a handful of episodes to go, Fox has probably already written this series off.
Cupid ABC
Last week's ratings: 6.22 million viewers
Chances of another season: Stick an arrow in it
Poor Cupid. The series has its charms, but it arrived D.O.A. and really never had a chance. Yes, it's still on the air, and, yes, you can watch this second go-around about a guy who thinks he's Cupid. But realistically, if Eli Stone's better ratings couldn't cut it, Cupid isn't going to get a chance at a second season. The bigger question is why ABC is having trouble holding on to the Dancing With the Stars viewers in that 10 p.m. hour.
Kings NBC
Last week's ratings: 3.63 million viewers
Chances of another season: Deposed
This very promising, intriguing and very expensive series lost its Sunday timeslot and will move to Saturdays beginning April 18. That's pretty much a death sentence. While it's likely this alternate-reality soap about a modern-day monarchy wouldn't have made it in any timeslot, Sundays at 8 p.m. was certainly not the right place for Kings. To avoid angering the 3.63 million viewers who are still watching the show, NBC will burn off the remaining episodes.
Knight Rider NBC
Season finale ratings: 5.76 million viewers
Chances of another season: Put it on blocks
We knew Knight Rider was in trouble when producers promised to "reboot" the series in the middle of the first season. The re-imagined series never managed to surpass its origins. There's been talk that it's canceled and that it's not canceled. But there's just no way Knight Rider will return.

Save CHUCK & TERMINATOR.
Heroes Sucks!!!!! Not as good as it once was
By operationsunshine at 8:27 AM ON 04/15/09
I dont see why SciFi couldn't pick up SCC and Dollhouse. While I dont particularly like Dollhouse there are a lot of people that do and it would bring in a lot of viewers for the station.
By pantera at 8:31 AM ON 04/15/09
fringe is good, so is chuck. Reaper has its moments but not enough
terminator & dollhouse both are series which always seem to be just an inch away from beeing good.
heroes, well if heroes had only 1 season it would have been worth it, but i never managed to stick with it after that
mind you prefer that lie to me (bit of scifi) stays on air, that and big bang
By ddh1969 at 8:37 AM ON 04/15/09
Fringe BETTER be back! FOX really needs to learn how to schedule a show. Every time it seems like it's gaining momentum it goes on hiatus. Doesn't help it goes directly against 'The Mentalist'. How many people came back looking for Fringe only to find it wasn't on and switched over to 'The Mentalist' and never looked back?
By Robert V Aldrich at 8:51 AM ON 04/15/09
I'm with Operationsunshine. Sci-Fi Channel, pick-up Sarah Connor Chronicles and Dollhouse. But please have the decency to put them a night other than Friday.
By RangerPrimeX at 8:52 AM ON 04/15/09
I actually liked the midseason reboot of Knight Rider. It made it a fun and entertaining show. The first half of the season should have been condensed to a 2 hour movie to set up the show for the reboot style it got. As for Dollhouse, I am really digging it now that it is getting more intriguing. As for Kings, would have been better as a series of movies or mini-series. I like the alternate world style of it.
By Phil at 8:53 AM ON 04/15/09
I sometimes think that the ratings are worked out based on just my TV. Perhaps I'm just egomaniacal, but Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Stargate Atlantis, Life on Mars, Kyle XY and The Ex-List all canceled and I didn't watch any of them.
But I watched Dollhouse and my own ratings vanished by the end of the first episode and I removed the series from my DVR. Maybe they should have just made Joe 90.
Heroes is still a great idea for a series and I want it to succeed, but if it fails I won't lose any sleep over it.
TSCC is also a great idea, but somewhat wordy. I'm pretty impressed that they didn't have to resort to a "T-800 of the week" series. I still like the idea and hope it comes back.
Fringe still interests me. The amazingly wide arc doesn't seem to get in the way of the individual shows and Walter seems (slightly) less crazy as time goes on. The even gave him a gun last night.
Knight Rider I feel I should watch just because it's Knight Rider. But if they cancel it, who would notice? I think they have used their rebooting reboots up.
Eleventh Hour, I like it. It's a simple show. My wife thinks Sewell is dreamy, so I guess that's her reason for wanting it back. For me the best part is Dr Hood's opening blindingly obvious statement of doom over the ticking clock. (Which was my idea by the way, just ask my wife)
Haven't caught Kings or Chuck, so they'll probably be canceled due to my lack of support.
As for Reaper... it's on the CW, so I can't comment.
By radiodaze at 9:11 AM ON 04/15/09
Chuck and Fringe are both amazing shows and deserve another season. Reaper too. Caught it last night and it's a funny, funny show with a great character arc for Sam. Heroes has really come back this year and Tim Kring needs the chance to really put Bryan Fuller back to work. Don't care about Kings, Knight Rider and everytime I tried to watch the new Cupid, I couldn't help thinking about Jeremy Piven in the old Cupid and how much better he was than Bobby Cannavale. I'll miss Sarah Connor and the finale was great, but the show lost it's way for a while there and I think that killed it. As for Dollhouse, I'm gonna lay the blame on all you haters out there who trashed the show online without even watching it. Once you get past the first ep (which Fox insisted on, it you'll recall), the show improved steadily and the last two eps in particular were unbelievably good. A few years from now when we're all clutching our "Dollhouse-The Complete Series" DVDs and bitching and moaning that Fox ruined another Wedon series, you should take a moment and think about just who helped them do it.
By msk417 at 9:12 AM ON 04/15/09
Fringe, Chuck, The Mentalist, Terminator, Dollhouse, Lie to Me, Life and Leverage were all enjoyable shows this season. Even if some are not returning it was a pretty great season. I'm hoping Chuck gets a renewal. I wish Castle was doing better as it is fun.
It would be great if SyFy picked up Terminator or Dollhouse instead of some of the lousy shows they have been running (Sanctuary - bleh!).
By Giavs at 9:21 AM ON 04/15/09
Kings had...that's HAD...promise. It started really well...then it slumped into a daytime drama. And a bad soap at that. The concept was good. I liked the whole kingdoms in a modern world of corporate boarder crossers...but hell...way, way too much soap.....
By Lordbowler at 9:51 AM ON 04/15/09
I hope that Terminator is saved. I love this show.
Also, I'm hoping for a return of Fringe, Chuck, Eleventh Hour, and even Heroes.
Dollhouse hasn't grabbed me, even though I am a great fan of Joss Whedon, and Knight Rider was a disappointment, although the reboot did help a bit.
By BackStJoe at 9:53 AM ON 04/15/09
Out of the shows listed, only Fringe and Dollhouse deserve to come back. And Fox would be smart to move them to the same night (and not on Friday or Saturday!)
By ab4dd0n at 10:07 AM ON 04/15/09
I mean this in the nicest way possible, but I hope something terrible happens to Jay Leno and his show gets canceled before it even starts. Chopping off 5 hours of programming just to stick in another "late-night" show is horrible.
By Jimmy at 10:09 AM ON 04/15/09
Heroes should have ended with season one. Everything that made this series fun and exciting has been lost on the last two years; not even the currently improved Season 3.5 has been all that good.
Medium deserves a lot more credit from NBC than it gets. They never market the show and they treat it like the red-headed stepchild, but people still watch and that more than NBC can say about many of its series.
Your prediction for Dollhouse is probably true, which is a shame since it was really starting to take off. As for Terminator, I never understood what people saw in this series.
Fringe is a pretty good series but I don't know why Fox would think it could pull ratings like The Mentalist. These are two completely different series. Given a little patience, I think Fringe could be the networks' next X-Files.
By jerryb at 10:11 AM ON 04/15/09
I also agree that Terminator would be a great fit for the Scifi channel. I hope the show can be saved since i think it excelled in its 2nd season despite the ratings. The move from Monday to Friday obviously hurt the ratings.
By nerdHerder at 10:15 AM ON 04/15/09
I don't care about any of the shows except Chuck. Chuck is the only ongoing show I watch.
By NadaNuff at 10:22 AM ON 04/15/09
I'm a fan of Terminator, Dollhouse, Fringe and Heroes, and I've come to grips with the (sad) fact that the first two probably won't come back. Dollhouse has great potential, and Terminator would be worth watching just to see what happens after the season finale.
Fringe is a great show all-around.
Heroes if good from time to time, still watch it because they surprise me with nice touches now and then, and because I'm "attached".
BTW, the first episode of Knight Rider was horrible. I watched a few beyond that, but that show never should have made it to air. With so many other quality shows out there, I couldn't justify sitting through a reboot to see if they got it right the second time.
By SarahFan at 10:25 AM ON 04/15/09
if Fox terminates Sarah Conner Chronicles I will never watch another show on the network. And NBC needs to keep Kings.
its the best show appearantly nobody is watching
By PISSED OFF at 10:28 AM ON 04/15/09
I'm REALLY tired of fun TV programs being shown at bad tmies or on bad days. I knew SCC & Dollhouse were going to have trouble on Friday...COME ON...F R I D A Y!!!! I'm not saying that these are great shows , but I grew up with the Terminator and love the concept. And Dushku is just the BOMB!
Kyle XY was a GREAT family show even though it was getting a little maniacal.
As someone said above, put shows in the right place and not against great shows and they might all succeed.
Also, do ratings take DVR into account???
By ExpletiveBMP at 10:30 AM ON 04/15/09
I agree with SarahFan, leave Sarah Chronicles alone, specifically since it got really interesting, same with Fringe, that's some good soup, now the rest of that I'm not to bothered by them staying or going, except for maybe dolly house; die die die barbiehouse die die die.
By pocketdoom at 10:30 AM ON 04/15/09
Terminator was hurt by the move to Friday. It did well versus Chuck and other shows on Monday. Which is weird because there is nothing on on Fridays.
By baron_elric at 10:34 AM ON 04/15/09
Of the shows on the edge, Chuck is the one I'd most like to see return. After that, Dollhouse is the only one I'd put any effort into preserving. I can say that only because I have already seen the handwriting on the wall for Kings, and its excellent scripting and acting are going to disappear far too soon. My wife wonders whether it would have gotten better numbers if Ian McShance had said c*********s more often.
By Jester at 10:42 AM ON 04/15/09
It is always risky getting attached to any imaginative show on network TV for fear being crushed very quickly. Terminator has only gotten better with each episode and should be allowed to cntinue telling its story. Reaper is the best fantasty/humor blend since Buffy and has great characters. Unfortunately, the promise of Dollhouse has not be achieved. Something is just wrong. Reaper has all the Whedon elements that you would look for in Dollhouse??!!
I truly love Kings expansive view and a wonderful cast. I knew that getting emotinal attached to it would only result in frustration. The same gut wrenching feeling experienced with my favorite new show over the last few seasons, Pushing Daisies.
By dragonfly at 11:05 AM ON 04/15/09
Save the Dollhouse!!!
the saddest bit is that if Dollhouse is canceled Joss will probably walk away from tv...at least for awhile. And that means we ALL lose.
By Robert Barnett at 11:07 AM ON 04/15/09
Knight Rider should be given a second chance. After the second reboot mid-season (yah, I know they shouldn't have to do this) it was a lot more like the original and it should be given a chance to see if it can turbo boost out of the pit. There is a lot to like in the new format. Now that the government is out and the terrorist of the week is also out (they should have known this was what we wanted, if it was we would have watched the 10 o'clock news.) But now the last 5 or so episodes were very good.
NBC Given them another chance! You didn't bother with the Bionic Woman which would have been fixed up. Don't pull the same bull with Knight Rider.
Robert
By Sefiros2211 at 11:07 AM ON 04/15/09
What about Knight Rider? KITT the Mustang was starting to grow on me. Dammit, the show deserves another chance. Besides, there's nothing good on Wednesday, anyway.
By Al at 11:11 AM ON 04/15/09
Maybe if they do a half season of Sarah Connor and a half season of Dollhouse, they could wrap up the season, pay less to make them and satisfy the fans without looking like total idiots for having great shows with promise left in one of the worst time slots of the week.
By all dead at 11:13 AM ON 04/15/09
Face it the execs at all these networks want one thing - cheaper shows. Dramas and sci-fi are cut. Just like the name of this website. Sci-fi is always to expensive to run longer than a season or two - by season three the initial contracts for the actors is over and if the show is any good they'd get pay raises. Sci-fi shows have to use special effects in their budgets to keep the shows interesting. Chuck is gone. It is getting to expensive, shame Chuck will never get the computer out of his head, and it looks like his dad will never stop jumping around in time.
Heroes will remain on air - cause some exec's wife like it. Knight Rider will remain on because Ford is paying the network to air the show.
What we need is a space show with clowns in it and McDonald's could sponsor it and it would stay on air for 20-30 years.
By archer75 at 11:14 AM ON 04/15/09
The only shows I care about are terminator, dollhouse, heroes, fringe and kings. All the rest are crap.
If people don't like those shows it's because they have the IQ of a corn dog and are watching Knight Rider.
By shroudedwolf at 11:41 AM ON 04/15/09
BRING BACK PUSHING DAISIES!!!!
Every dang well-written show ends up cancelled! Anyone remember the 7 episode Jeff Goldblum lead "Raines"? I do! It was GREAT! But it was well-written....alas.
Here's my take. Any show involving Bryan Fuller should have at least 4 seasons. Pushing Daisies should never have been cancelled. However, Fuller is working on Heroes season 4, so that has some promise. T:SCC is also a well-written show, in general (meaning despite some of the thrown in "drama" which people got bored with becuase it wasn't things 'asplodin!). However, as everyone knows, FOX executives are morons. (Kind of like the Syfy channel's.) Hint: Syfy--Do what everyone is telling you; pick up Terminator. You might actually get some people back who have forsaken you.
By dakalmog at 11:43 AM ON 04/15/09
I'd be happy for history to repeat itself and for Joss to turn Dollhouse into a feature, if that were feasible. There's so much trash being made for theaters these days - Dollhouse would be a vast improvement over garbage like "Dragonball Evolution", and it's likely to draw a broader audience.
I agree with the many calls to see Sarah Connor jump from Fox to SCI FI. As far as I'm concerned, Fox has used up what little goodwill it had left. SCC would be a better series for SCI FI to develop, and it would be a great leap in quality over, say, Flash Gordon!
By CRDFilm at 11:47 AM ON 04/15/09
I hope Chuck and Reaper get a reprieve, but my favorite show on the list is Fringe. It's become must-watch TV for me, but now Fox is screwing those who DVR it by allowing Idol to run over it's allotted time for the past two weeks. On the show's first night back in months, AI ran over 8 minutes! The second week, there was a 2 minute overrun. I have to DVR Fringe, so because of the ineptness of the people behind AI, I have to go another route to get Fringe now. As for T: TSCC, of course the ratings plummeted. Fox moved it to the Friday death slot. The people who would watch the show "live" are not going to be home on Friday night, so they're all recording it and those numbers don't always get counted properly. They need to put it back on Monday.
By nkwulf at 11:52 AM ON 04/15/09
Hereoes should have ended after season 1. It had the perfect ending.
By mweston48 at 11:55 AM ON 04/15/09
Save Fringe & Chuck!!
By Deano at 11:56 AM ON 04/15/09
I find it amazing that FOX is upset that Fringe is not putting up Menatlist numbers.I mean really the fact that the Mentalist is actually promoted by CBS and does not have NCIS running 5-10 minutes over every week couldnt have anything to do with it.Two weeks in arow American I dol has run over into the next timeslot. Come on Fox you dedicate 10 hours to idol a week ,can it not run over into othe r programming?
Dont get me started on Sara Connor. They basically set this show and Dollhouse up to fail and then are surprised when they do.
Not a fan of Dollhouse (though I love Eliza Dushku) but damn they did neither show a favor by putting on friday nights.
Ultimately I think we should get used to the idea that the major networks have no real interest in giving anything but "reality" shows a real chance
By owlbear33 at 12:17 PM ON 04/15/09
I still don't see how Chuck never has more than 7 million viewers...That show is one of the best and most original shows on TV. I wish the powers that be at NBC would just move Heroes to "ScyFy" and hype up the potential that Chuck has with the mainstream crowd. No other show on this list is more deserving.
By briguy2789 at 12:19 PM ON 04/15/09

Anybody that thinks that Sci-Fi will pick up either Dollhouse or Terminator SCC is just fooling themselves. They have never picked up any cancelled shows to continue them.

Terminator Canceled? Are they smoking crack??? who is running the show over there! its the best sci fi show out today.
for the record - Battlestar didn't go out with grace - the last hour stunk! They were smoking crack too!
By ChadRo at 12:44 PM ON 04/15/09
Don't these producers and talking heads of companies know that everyone TiVo's everything on Friday? Hell I TiVo everything. Which doesn't count against the viewers polls. I would bet 80% of other viewers are like me. How do they track Tivo?
By tati at 1:00 PM ON 04/15/09
I really like many of these shows but I must say that Chuck is one of the most consistently funny shows I've ever watched (outside of Seinfeld, maybe). I laugh my a$$ off, every single episode--there is great chemistry between the actors and the BuyMore second-stringers are absolute gems in the rough :)
So they cancel these shows and then what--more crap. That's the problem. Everyone is looking for the next homerun but there isn't anything wrong with a few singles and doubles--they could still get you where you wanna go.
People have choices--I won't be watching Jay Leno, no matter what time he's on. I hope his primetime venture flops--nothing personal, but I'd rather have other programming on when I'm awake--let him go back to being on when I'm asleep :P

Whenever a good show I watch gets cancelled prematurely, I refuse to watch whatever replaces it. "Life on Mars" is gone, replaced by what looks like a really stupid show. Won't watch it. "KyleXY" is gone. After it went the way it went, I removed ABC-Family channel from my TV's memory. If "Sarah Conner Chronicles" goes, I won't watch whatever takes its time slot.

I noticed that Ghost Whisperer was not on this list. I used to LOVE CBS' Friday night lineup. Although I love NUMB3RS, we would switch to SciFi at 10. However, let's look at CBS' idiocracy:
First of all, one word: Moonlight. Awesome show, great ratings, trashed. I think it would be great to bring it back with all the Twilight hype going on now. I know that SciFi picked up the reruns, but you could have picked up the show!
Let's talk about 08-09: My wife and I completely lost interest in Ghost Whisperer when her husband "inhabited" the body. Then he couldn't remember who he was, and she started getting selfish and trying to remind him. We looked for something else immediately. We lost the storyline on SCC, so we couldn't go back to that, so we don't even have the TV on during 8:00.
My wife and I love Buffy and Angel, we own the complete series of Firefly, but we were appalled at all of the negative criticism that Dollhouse got before it even aired. Joss' name brought people to it, but then it opened it up for jeers. The critics made up their minds to cancel the show before the first episode. I still like it, and it's gotten WAY better. Of course, I like to give shows a chance. That's why I like to see what's on SciFi on Saturdays! :) (So that's what happens to Home Improvement vets).
I'd watch The Mentalist on CBS.com before I'd switch it from Fringe. That is an excellent show, and Noble is zany!
I'm still watching Lost.
NBC is an idiot for putting Leno on again. If you didn't want him to leave, why did you not renew his contract? Now you're gonna waste a lot of premium time. Mondays are truly Must See TV times for NBC. I watch the whole evening. (Once Castle came on, I really liked it, but am struggling which one to watch and end up switching every week). Of course, this is the channel that cancelled Journeyman.
By rkf at 2:04 PM ON 04/15/09
From the things I'm reading, it seems as if scifi and drama are out and the old reliable half hour comedies are in. Personally, I hate most half hour comedy series, though there are exceptions. Usually insipid, not clever, lousy 2D characters, predictable plots, etc.
The sad truth is that the economy is hitting everybody hard and, as somebody mentioned, scifi shows are usually expensive to produce. Add that to the poor, beleaguered population's desire to laugh away their troubles, and it doesn't look good for our shows.
By Owl at 2:32 PM ON 04/15/09
A lot of the shows on this list have or had potential. Heroes is getting better but no one will deny that it had some majorly bad story arcs that it is recovering from. Knigh Rider made a good effort to make a comeback but the execs had already made up their mind to cancel the show. Dollhouse has not had enough episodes to truly get people around the whole "human trafficing" idea.
Now Chuck I have to say is the #1 best show on TV now and diserves another season. The show has only gotten better. It blends comedy, action, and romance perfectly together. In my opinion I think the chances of this show getting a Season 3 pickup are good. The web is abuzz with a LOT of petitions to keep this show alive. From the support this show has right now I don't know how the show is only getting a nelson rating of around 6mill. If you haven't watched it yet then I encourage you to go to NBCs website and watch a few episodes (for free). If you have watched it I still encourage you to watch some on NBCs site to show them you like it, because they do look at web viewing also. Lastly, regarding Chuck, I think that they show move it to a better (Monday at 8 is the WORST) time slot so that more people will watch this AWSOME show.
I would also point out that the studios need to come up with another system to rate shows. The public at large had changed their viewing habbits. With DVRs and Web viewing on the rise, the Nelson raitings are not going to be anywhere as accurate as it should. The golden viewers are the 18-39year olds out there. They are the ones the networks want and see as most important, yet that group is the group that is more likely to use a DVR or view on the WEB. Do I have an answer, no, but rating systems do need to change.

Though it's not really a sci-fi show, I think the ABC comedy "Better Off Ted" is the best new show of the season. It comes on before "Lost."
It does have two nerdy scientists who work in the R&D department of a giant company, Veridian Dynamics. They make weaponized pumpkins and cowless beef.
Very, very funny and smart. Check it out.

BRING BACK FRINGe AND DOLLHOUSE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By Eggster at 3:12 PM ON 04/15/09
Wow, what a response!
When I look at the ratings for many of these shows, I see serious time slot issues. I love CHUCK, but it is on opposite HOUSE, which I simply will not miss for anything, so I catch CHUCK on HULU the next day. Are the networks paying attention to this? I hope so.
But hey, if the SciFi channel is interested in picking up CHUCK, The SCC, or any of the other shows listed above, then I'm there for them! After all, they have some gaping holes in their lineup right now.
If they need any encouragement to do so, well I refer them to the other, numerous comments posted here.
Best of luck!
By Eggster at 3:20 PM ON 04/15/09
Here's a thought, how about setting up an online poll to let SciFi viewers specify their top 3 favorites from the list above? That would give SciFi execs some hard data to chew on.
By The Chronic Rift at 3:31 PM ON 04/15/09
When is NBC going to show more love to Medium? Every time there's a hole in their schedule, they bring the show back and they always tease it's going to another night and time, but then they place it on Mondays at 10. When will they just admit it's a solid enough show, more solid than the mind numbing stupidity that is Heroes, and give it a home in the fall schedule?
By mc at 3:37 PM ON 04/15/09
While I'm disappointed about T:SCC and Dollhouse, I am REALLY sorry to see Kings on the bubble. Great acting, excellent story telling. Had this been on HBO, it would be on forever.
By playe at 4:06 PM ON 04/15/09
What a minute, so in order for a show to be renewed it HAS to have The Mentalist's ratings? What a pathetic excuse for an article!
By Jake Lockley at 4:12 PM ON 04/15/09
Heroes was already picked up for a fourth season, they reported that months ago. Why I have no idea. It hasn't been the same since before the writer's strike.
By Freak at 4:45 PM ON 04/15/09
FOX Bloody not get rid of Terminator and Dollhouse. both of those shows rock.
Terminator is really doing well here in the UK on Virgin. FOX needs to look at the big picture and not just the US picture!!
By Scott at 5:46 PM ON 04/15/09
Good point, playe. It's odd that as it becomes increasingly evident that the Neilsen system of ratings is no longer working and that the networks will have to be satisfied with a smaller percentage of the audience than they
had in the days when it was just the three networks that the networks seem more obsessed with grabbing blockbuster ratings than ever. Entertainment writers seem more obsessed with the old ratings system than ever, too (I mean, seriously, does it strike anybody that this year, all entertainment writers can write about is how every freaking show is hovering on the edge of cancellation because of ratings?) instead of dealing with the changes that need to occur in the TV ratings system.
It's all very odd.
Anyway,I hope that all these shows get to continue and that if Fox is dumb enough not to want TSCC and DOllhouse, that some other network or networks will want them....
By yougotatvinthere at 6:43 PM ON 04/15/09
I hope they don't cancel Chuck! I love that show. It's too bad they're canceling Terminator. I enjoyed it.
By wab1701 at 7:33 PM ON 04/15/09
The problems with the ratings system is two-fold, actually. Neilsen and others don't count DVR or TiVOd shows because viewers have the ability to fast-forward through the commercials. Just becuase a show is DVRd by a million people 18-49 doesn't mean the ad dollars make it worth keeping on when no one watches the ads. Sites like Hulu (a provider I frequent) has you watch 15 or 30 second ads. Much preferred to the 3-5 minutes of commericals on TV. The nets need to start adding in viewings on Hulu and other sites to get a truer sense of who's watching. Or they need to figure out a way for DVR & TiVO to work in their favor.
By nooooo at 7:49 PM ON 04/15/09
Chuck is the only real show I bother regularly watching. They better not get rid of it. Please?
And Kings, while it has its most definite faults, actually isn't that bad.
Why must the good die young?
By griffon at 8:06 PM ON 04/15/09
We have already lost Battlestar, and Stargate Atlantis. Heros lost us. The best shows on TV are fighting for their lives and "Who's the American Idol Dancing with the Biggest No Deal Loser Star" has no problem being on every night of the week.
The question is, will the DVDs of all these reality shows ever have the market that good TV shows have (and some not so good oncec they are old enough).
The one show I would miss is Chuck. It is the perfect blend of adventure, humor, romance and a likeable hero. Of all the shows, that would be the one I would vote for.
By Ironhead at 9:00 PM ON 04/15/09
Kill: Chuck, Reaper, SCC, Medium, Cupid, Knight Rider.
Save the rest. Simple.
By Mikey M at 9:04 PM ON 04/15/09
How is Fringe in danger of being cancelled?
Heroes should get the Ax because it still hasn't rebounded and Sarah Connor was just cancelled so....
By Confused at 9:24 PM ON 04/15/09
I would like to nominate you for worst article title ever. The title really indicates that most of the shows on the list were in real danger. Yet it took a while before you finally mentioned a show that really had a chance at being canceled. To be fair, I did enjoy the article and appreciate the information. I really don't watch a lot of TV and am glad I missed the remade show Cupid. I watched the original and loved and would hate to have my fond memories ruined. I am a bit surprised that Terminator isn't doing better. I love Summer Glau.
By xplrrman at 11:44 PM ON 04/15/09
Save TERMINATOR!!! As soon as the new movie comes out people are going to want to watch it. Save DOLLHOUSE also, it's getting good.
By Scott at 12:02 AM ON 04/16/09
Wab1701-you bring up something I've been wondering about. People could just as easily fast-forward through the commercials on shows they taped on a VCR and this never seemed to bother anybody. Why does the fact that they can do it with DVR bother everybody so much?
By ranmanmx at 12:37 AM ON 04/16/09
The thought -provoking SCC actually was a bit slower to allow for character study, unusual in an action, Sci-Fi series. I think somebody should pick it up, especially since the new movie looks to be as big as Batman, if the hype can be believed.
By justme at 1:09 AM ON 04/16/09
At least when they trashed "Life on Mars", they had the good manners to wrap it up in an interesting way. The least these network execs could do is consider that possibility ahead of time and create the potential for a clean wrap to any show that 'might' be cancelled, which seems to be most of the interesting ones these days. I am entertained by most of the shows on this list, especially Chuck.
And personally, I don't watch anything in real time, the DVR picks it up so I can watch whatever, whenever life allows for it. And truthfully, I run three tuners, as do many of my friends, its programmed to record by show name and type, I really don't care when or where they are on. This is likely the way future viewers will manage whatever they wish to watch.
American Idol = Low IQ - no one ever went broke by underestimating the intelligence of the American Public.
By sg1spoilergate at 1:24 AM ON 04/16/09
I LOVE Medium, Fringe and Chuck. Hope they're renewed for another season of fun and entertainment.
By kernel_thai at 3:13 AM ON 04/16/09
I cant believe Fringe is even on this list. Course it was on hiatus for like 16 months. Brilliant! Heroes has forgotten what made the characters so likable to begin with. T:SCC is well written and wonderfully acted and deserves to be a network that appreciates it. I'm starting to warm up to Dollhouse.
By hedgewolf5170 at 8:37 AM ON 04/16/09
dollhouse and reaper are two of the best shows out there right now, there's nothing else like them and it would be a shame if they do not get picked up for another season
By save Sci Fi at 12:22 PM ON 04/16/09
The most interesting thing about this article is that every show listed would if on the SYFY channel be the largest rated in the channel’s history. What an opportunity the channel has if they actually populated their air with Science Fiction shows. Eleventh Hour with a 12 million viewer audiences would be a NO BRAINER to be picked up by NBCU. Science Fiction may not have a large enough following to make it on the broadcast networks but 12 million viewers certainly is enough to support a dedicated cable channel for the genre. IMO Fringe is a very great example of a show that is Science Fiction, but not to GEEKIE to fit the very narrow idea that the new executives at SYFY want to program their channel. I remember reading my Howe wants no future related, space or similar programs for his channel ( I say his channel because he has taken away the idea of it being my channel anymore).
I know. none of the series will make it to SYFY but the channel could grow if someone could think a little more like the fans of the channel's promoted genre and less like those unsupportive of these same fans.
As for the several series now on Fox, my curiosity makes me wonder why a property they are already invested in should not be tried over on FX in an attempt to move the millions of viewers that have already watched these shows a chance to continue on the less demanding cable channel that seems happy when a program can get one million or more viewers. Dollhouse, TSCC, or even Fringe would be considered very successful on FX. They could start by rerunning the original series and following up on FX much as how USA does with House (very successfully I might add) and if the series dropped below some ratings level too low for the broadcast network it might still be successful on FX to continue a while longer, even seasons longer . . . SCIFI did this with SG1 and it continued for several more years.
By Alessar at 12:47 PM ON 04/16/09
I could have sworn that Heroes was already renewed for next season.
It's Chuck, Dollhouse, and Kings that I want to see renewed though. I have stopped watching Heroes, it was bungled and it's beyond recovery for me.
By NowBored at 3:05 PM ON 04/16/09
Well I guess its time to turn off the TV, unless you like watching Sitcoms, and people who cant sing. So much for good TV shows. Just like the weatherman, the TV execs really know how to forecast.
By heelsfan4u1969 at 4:37 PM ON 04/16/09
It figures, 7 out of 10 of the shows that i watch are in danger of being canceled. Typical.
By rljensen3 at 11:28 PM ON 04/16/09
Keep Chuck, SCC and Reaper. I am also a KR fan but want it with The Hoff. If not can it..
By bgsinc at 12:05 AM ON 04/17/09
I decided not to watch TV, but just buy the DVDs when Stargate Atlantis was canceled. I'm sick and tired of shows being cancelled after a few episodes.
Its not worth my time to watch a new show until it survives the first season. And I don't buy the DVDs if there is an unresolved cliff-hanger either (Note to productions staff - always resolve teh cliff-hanger on the DVD set - your sales will go up)
Cheers.
By PadrePedro at 12:33 AM ON 04/17/09
Sci-fi please save SCC. At least let it wrap some things up in a miniseries.
By prmoon at 11:54 PM ON 04/17/09
PLEASE KEEP SCC AND FRINGE ON, PUT THEM ON SCI FI IF YOU HAVE TOO!
By griffon at 12:09 AM ON 04/18/09
Maybe NBC should look back at their history. Star Trek almost didn't survive to a second season and is going strong 40 years later. Give your shows a chance and make money in sindication. Also, you showed Heros on Sci-Fi the first season. Look at showing some other shows there (Sci-Fi) and on USA to generate interest. Especially Chuck, Medium and Kings. For crying out load, Deal or No Deal is showing beyond the straight network channel. The network could increase their revenue and give more shows a chance to expand their audience. It is called thinking outside the box... the old three network box and looking into the opportunities of the cable and satalite box.
Long live CHUCK
By tothemoon at 2:09 PM ON 04/20/09
Keep Chuck, Fringe, and the rest. Lots of us want somethng different.
By cc623 at 7:07 PM ON 04/20/09
Fringe,TSCC,Medium,Knight Rider are the only ones from that list that I would be pissed if they were cancelled!!!Fringe is just EXCELLENT and continues to get better every episode.Medium is a little "slower" than last season but, still has me waiting for the next episode.TSCC kinda dipped in the mid season but,the last few episodes brought me right back.Knight Rider is not perfect but,I still enjoy it and would like to see it back for another season at least.
By luvinx at 11:04 AM ON 04/23/09
I still cannot believe that Eleventh Hour is on this list. CBS wants to cancel a hit show. Makes sense, right? But, for all you EH fans out there, we have started a campaign to save the show. As a matter of fact, I have seen the fan base double on many of the EH forums well after the finale aired. People want this back, and I would like your help also. Please click on the link for more info. Thanks!
