A feature film based on BBC's hit sci-fi series Doctor Who is in the works, according to the BBC.
A spokeswoman for BBC Films confirmed that "a script is in development," the BBC reported in a story about David Tennant's upcoming guest appearance as the Time Lord in the Doctor Who spinoff series The Sarah Jane Adventures.
BBC entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba said there were no guarantees a film would be made; if the project went into full production, a release would be a long time coming. It's also unclear whether Tennant or another actor would fill the title role.
In the meantime, Tennant, 38, will appear over two episodes of a new 12-part Sarah Jane show, which starts in September, the BBC reported.
Russell T. Davies, executive producer of The Sarah Jane Adventures and Doctor Who, said it would be a "full-on appearance" and "not just a cameo."
In the mothership series, Tennant is being replaced by Matt Smith, 26, who will appear as the 11th Doctor next year.

Yay! This is good news! Sarah Jane and the Doctor were always my favorite companion/Doctor combination, so it will be good to see Elisabeth and "the Doctor" David back together again!
And as much as I am going to miss David Tennant as the Doctor, I'm also looking forward to seeing what the new actor does with this role. Having grown up watching a different Doctor every week on PBS repeats, I'm used to the change, so I don't mind it.

Christopher Eccleston and Billy Piper would make a fine cast if Tennant is too busy. I thought Eccleston's moody Doctor was more interesting than Tennant's frantic Tenth Doctor anyway.

this would be great to show the time war & the eighth doctor !

I've been wondering how they are going to deal with burning up all the Doctor's incarnations? The next doctor is the 11th so there's only one more left after him, assuming that the 1st doctor really was the first and hadn't regenerated before. What do you think? Are they going to give the doctor a way to gain more regenerations?

I don't know why but I picture the new Doctor Matt Smith in a long black/ grey or bown coat and black or brown leather racing gloves and maybe riding boots.
I hear they are upgrading the interior of the tardis. I see glowing blues, black, white and silver. I hope they give him a new K9. I would love it if they barrow the design used in the Val Kilmer Scifi Red Planet. The Robotic Probe/ attack drone. The Call the Robot AIMEE. They need a new and improved K9, they don't even have to call it K9. Give it a new name. Initially it can only communicate via texting, later by voice.
Dr Who is a cross between Sherlock Holmes and a futuristic explorer like Indiana Jones.
Well that's my 2 cents for what it's worth.

Twinkle:
Actually, it's been established that you get twelve Regenerations, plus your original body, for a total of thirteen lives. As for getting more lives after that, they've already given the Master a new life cycle, so presumably the Doctor could get one, too.

8th Doctor and Time War!
By thanatos at 9:27 PM ON 05/26/09
A McGann/Eccleston story would be a great way to bridge the old and new series. However, what I'd really like to see is a MultiDoc story involving an earlier 1doc - played by Bowie. Or go and collect Susan - she most likely never received the Rassilon Imprimature or whatever triggers regenerations, so it may be left to the Doctor to lend whatever genetic trigger is necessary...
By Timexlord at 10:18 PM ON 05/26/09
Thank God for PBS! Tom Baker was the best Doctor ever!
By Neal at 10:22 PM ON 05/26/09
I wish they would bring the Peter Davison Dr. and David Tennants doctor together. At least peter still retains some of his look from the 80's, he has aged well. I Know they two of them did a small movie together for some kind of charity event in the UK.,. but that little movie lasted about 5 minutes, check it out on Youtube. The new doctor has some big shoes to fill, but you never know, he may be just as good.
By thoughtbeast at 11:13 PM ON 05/26/09
Reply to Twinkle: There's two more Doctors after Matt Smith. 12 regenerations = 13 Doctors.
By fan tools at 11:18 PM ON 05/26/09
You tools.
Who is cash cow.
They'll give him 150 more regenerations.
He makes money, the Doctor stays around.
This is fiction, people.
By Kevin at 11:26 PM ON 05/26/09
For all we know, it'll star Tom Cruise as the Doctor and Britney Spears or Paris Hilton as the companion.

I would love to see Doctor Who on the big screen. For those of you who dont know 2 doctor who movies were produced in the 1960's staring Peter Cushing of Star Wars and Hammer horror film fame. The were both wonderfully done and the first color Doctor Who. I would love to see a new doctor take on the roll for the movie there are some wonderful British actors out there that i would love to see in the roll. Ian Mcshane of Lovejoy and Deadwood fame for one
By Kevin at 11:56 PM ON 05/26/09
Ian McShane as the Master, maybe.
By kev74 at 1:54 AM ON 05/27/09
Of course, fan tools. Do you think they make movies and tv shows purely for artistic and entertainment purposes? There all about making money at the core, nothing wrong with that actors got to eat too.

I think Sarah Jane Smith is a companion that the Doctor should never have parted with. We all now what happened. He went back for after The Deadly Assassin, but accidentally went to Leela's planet instead. The Doctor got mixed up with Leela for awhile, but put up with it knowing that he could always come back for Sarah anytime. After installing the randomizer, he could no longer go to Sarah in fear that she would be in danger. But, when he finally could, why didn't he go back for Sarah? Because, her coordinates were still in the TARDIS' databanks and Gallifrey, so he feared that one day, the Black Guardian would seek revenge by killing her (There is a hint of this revengeful truth (not her specifically) in "Enlightenment".

A new Doctor Who movie? That rocks! There hasn't been one since the TV movie back in 1996. I'm still not sure about the new Doctor though. Kind'a young. I mean, he's my age. Still, I'll give anything a shot. As for the Sarah Jane Adventuries - I hope it's either on BBC America or Scifi... me being a Yank an'all.
By rodee at 6:02 AM ON 05/27/09
I just can't imagine anyone else short of David or Christopher doing this film. Hopefully, they will use David. That is if they want to see a motivated box-office. Three cheers for him appearing in Sarah Jane Adventures.
By JimmyD at 9:27 AM ON 05/27/09
thanatos nailed it. PLUS! The Time War is massive enough to warrant a series of movies (trilogy). Have it star McGann and at some point he'd regenerate into Eccleston... even if it at the finale (since Eccleston may not be too keen to revisit the role and had a nice run as the Doctor).
By Sboles1701 at 9:43 AM ON 05/27/09
It was established that 13 is the limit of regenerations in the classic series. But if you have paid *really close* attention to the new series, they have played a bit fast and loose with that--witness the Master who had used up his regenerations long ago but did the new body thing two seasons ago. The producer of the classic show even said once that if the show was on long enough to reach 13 lives and was still popular there were ways to write themselves out ("get around" were his actual words) the stated limit. I think they must be working on a trap door just in case they reach the magic number--or they could just retcon the limitation out.
By memphremagog at 10:35 AM ON 05/27/09
It may very well be possible that if a Doctor Who movie does get of of the ground, it will only vaguely resemble the current show. There is so much continuity to try to fit in to a two hour(or so) film, wont be possible. Between introducing the character of the Doctor and that he is a Time Lord, plus a companion, and whatever villain they face will be quite a task for the script.
If the film is produced in Hollywood, you can bet that all previous continuity will be obliterated for flashy nonsense.
It's highly likely that you would get something like Jude Law as the Doctor and Megan Fox as his companion. You surely wont get Christopher Eccleston or the Time War..that would be how a fan or someone else who cares about the show would do it.
I cant begin to imagine how they would bastardize the Daleks or the Master for the 'ol Hollywood upgrade.
By Seano at 11:29 AM ON 05/27/09
I noticed a comment by Twinkle, about them using up all the doctor's incarnations, well i've been thinking, the first time we saw the doctor, he was an old man near the end of his life, and in The new series adventures, there have been remarks that the doctor have a very andventorous life as a kid aswell, so they could always make some series about him as a younger man, altho it could have any daleks or cybermen in, but it could certainly star the Master and The Time Lords :D
By timelord in waiting at 12:58 PM ON 05/27/09
bring on Ricky Gervais as a new doctor!
By MrCJ at 1:21 PM ON 05/27/09
As far as resetting the 13 incarnations, both the Master and the Doctor became human. Perhaps that was enough to "reset" the counter.
By zathras at 1:37 PM ON 05/27/09
I tend to think a Doctor Who feature film would be a mistake. For me, the heart of Doctor Who, the thing that's always made it such a fun series to watch, is the very same thing that would probably be lost on the big screen.
The charm of Doctor Who has always been its low budget sets and cheesy special effects, absurd plots that often make little sense, and over-the-top villains who want to control the universe. I fear that a feature film would take from Who the very thing that makes it so much fun, just as the film version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy completely lost what made that series so enjoyable. I think the innate silliness of both Doctor Who and Hitchhiker's Guide are best suited to the low budget small screen of television, instead of the too-serious, big budget venue of a feature film.
By Casey4147 at 2:22 PM ON 05/27/09
Um, didn't Tenant regenerate to Tenant in the last episode of last season? He got shot by a Dalek. Doesn't that count? (Let's not go into that whole Mary Tamm to Lalla Ward regeneration of Romana's way back when in the 80's - she must have killed off all of hers in that one scene!)
...So Tennant's the first actor to play two regenerations of the Doctor, and Matt Smith will be #12...
By scifi-ED at 2:39 PM ON 05/27/09
@zathras - I agree with your point. But I think this happens because when they make a feature film they try to gear it towards people that never heard of it, knowing that the original fans will go see it almost no matter what.
Because of this they amp things up, and take a few things out that the fans love.
@MrCJ - I was kind of thinking the same thing.
I was also thinking that, maybe it could have to do with him regenerating and not changing. I'm still catching up on the old ones, so I'm not sure if any of the other doctor's have done this.
By Kevin at 4:25 PM ON 05/27/09
Maybe having a replicated daughter rests everything.
By The Bachelor at 6:26 PM ON 05/27/09
I forget the exact episode (Was it the Five Doctors?) but at one point the Time Lords offered The Master a complete new set of regenerations in reward for some service. I don't see why The Doctor couldn't find whatever gadget the Timelords would have used to reward The Master.
By Graham at 6:59 PM ON 05/27/09
I was under the impression that when the Time Lords were wiped out during the Time War, the "essence" of his people was absorbed by him, therefore giving him a populations worth of regeneration.
On another note, Tennant said he would do a complete season if there was a movie at the end of it to produce the new regeneration. This was never offered so I doubt we will see him in any future production.
By Nads at 9:45 AM ON 05/28/09
I take the point of everyone worrying about a "big hollywood movie" buggering up everythign that fans love about Doctor Who. But there's one thing to remember - this is highly unlikely to be a big hollywood movie. It's (I believe) being made by BBC films, which doesn't exactly lend itself to something massive. I fancy it'll end up being something a-la 'Serenity' - take the TV show and basically expand it a little. No huge A-list stars. Which i sfine with me as long as the story and acting is up to scratch. Only thing i'd really love is if 1. somehow it did star Tennant, and 2. if the special effects got a step up from those on the show
By The Gipper at 2:37 PM ON 05/28/09
They can bring Tennant back any time they want even after the regeneration occurs. Human-Doctor is living in a parallel universe with Rose and they could always do an adventure story starring the two of them.
By zaracyn at 6:00 PM ON 05/31/09
I would absolutlely hate for Hollywood to bastardize the Doctor Who series. Every TV to movie remake they've every made has been horrible...this coming from an American. I personally would love to see McGann in the film, he had way too little screen time as the 8th Doc.
By vanceshaf at 4:50 AM ON 06/03/09
If they make a movie they should use Tom Baker, it would be a guaranteed success!
By jove at 8:41 PM ON 06/29/09
All the folks fixated on the 13 regenerations - watch Brain of Morbius. It is sad that I remember that.
By vikes4ever at 3:05 PM ON 07/07/09
@Casey4147
The Doctor used the regeneration energy to heal his injuries. After that was done, he channeled the regeneration energy into his spare hand(left over from The Christmas Invasion), before he actually regenerated into a new body. So, Matt Smith will still be the 11th, not the 12th.
By BuckBlack at 4:21 PM ON 07/17/09
I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Paul McGann reprise his version of the Doctor - but the script would have to be a big improvement on 'Doctor Who: The Movie'. Let's face it, it was BL**DY AWFUL!
By Stephanie at 12:35 AM ON 07/24/09
They'll use David, people like him best. And if they don't, they'll use someone completely new. I'd hope that they'd use Rose, because she's my favorite from both series. Although I don't think they will. And they'll probably have it a UK-only movie, because that's just my luck. Which would be so disappointing.
