[Updated: Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon reacted to the news that a new Buffy movie is in the works, sans him and many of the characters he created for the cult-hit TV series, EW.com's Michael Ausiello reported:
"I hope it's cool," Whedon wrote the columnist.
OK, so maybe he'll have more to say later; he's currently making the horror movie Cabin in the Woods.]
A new incarnation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is being developed for the big screen, but don't get too excited, Buffy fans: This version wouldn't involve series creator Joss Whedon, would have no connection to the beloved TV show and wouldn't make use of such characters as Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike.
How can this be?
The movie is being developed by Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment and Fran Rubel Kuzui, the director of the original 1992 Buffy the Vampire Slayer film, and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The new Buffy is being called a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel, the trade paper reported.
Believe it or not, Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held on to the rights to Buffy since the beginning, when she discovered the Buffy script by then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the poorly received 1992 movie, which was released by Fox.
Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman, then president of Sandollar Television, bringing back Whedon to make the TV series, which was produced by Fox TV and launched on The WB in 1997 (it later moved to UPN). Kuzui and Sandollar received executive producer credits on Buffy and its spinoff, Angel.
The parties are meeting with writers and hearing takes and later will look for a home for the project. The producers do not rule out Whedon's involvement but have not yet reached out to him.

No way in Sunnydale (Hellmouth) will this revamp (pun intended) be watch-worthy without the wit of Whedon and Charm of Sarah Michelle Gellar. I'll happily stick with my DVD collection of the TV series AND the ongoing Season 8 comic book series.

smg and her trusty friend Mr pointy
the tv series had this great chemistry and the movie will not be able to recreate the character interaction that ppl loved about the tv series
By gxknight at 2:01 AM ON 05/26/09
This is such an amazingly bad idea.
If whoever is running the show wanted to cash in on the Buffy name without having everyone from the series then they should consider doing a spinoff with another slayer and just start a new franchise.
We do not need a 3rd incarnation of Buffy.
Stupidity continues to run amok in Hollywood!
By hulk-lite at 2:07 AM ON 05/26/09
Thank God. The show is almost as brain-dead as its fans. The movie, however, was hilarious and awesome. Normally, a remake of an early 90s horror-comedy wouldn't exactly pull my interest, but this one will be worth it just to watch the Whedonite freak out. Here's to hoping that this one gets off the ground and gives a firm middle finger to that hack JW.
By ScottK at 2:07 AM ON 05/26/09
The stupidity behind this idea, even by Hollywood standards,is mind-blowing
By Infernosphere2003 at 2:14 AM ON 05/26/09
Fran Rubel Kuzui was what made the first movie so bad. She took Joss's idea and twisted into something she wanted.
I know directors are suppose turn a script into a movie, but she bastardized into 90210 with vampires.
By hulk-lite at 2:17 AM ON 05/26/09
"I know directors are suppose turn a script into a movie, but she bastardized into 90210 with vampires."
Exactly! What Mrs. Kuzui did was create a brilliant satire - something that Whedon has never had the cajones for.
Also, Kristy Swanson > Sarah Michelle Gellar
By Scanner at 2:46 AM ON 05/26/09
I have to agree with gxknight. Hulk-lite's comment however is utterly without value, contributing nothing but insults to those who liked something apparently different than he likes so he, like so many commenters I see anymore in SciFi, has to insult them.
That said, I loved the movie, and refused to watch the series at first because it was so different than the movie. However, about mid-way through the series a friend of mine talked me into giving it a chance, and I was not disappointed.
THIS idea however is too much. It would have to have a stupendiously great plot to interest me. "Remake" to me does not inspire the concept 'great plot'.
And yet, I hear Star Trek was very well done for what it is, so nothing is impossible. Guess we'll see.
By bookwy12m at 4:16 AM ON 05/26/09
Kristy is as tired as a can of Swanson broth. Leave her in the 80's with extra preservatives.
SMG = Buffy 4ever.
By Monsters and Rockets at 4:30 AM ON 05/26/09
Wow, does that sound like a horrible idea. It's frustrating that fans have been pleading for a Buffy movie for years, and this is probably the closest we'll ever get.
By Ashapasian at 4:52 AM ON 05/26/09
Everyone here is missing the bigger implication. This is a very bad idea. yes. but not just because your remaking an mediocre film and it's brilliant half sequal half remake of a tv series. It's holly wood just remaking stuff AGAIN. when will it end. when is someone in holly wood going to get an origional idea. thats what makes great entertainment. I'm no expert or anything, I don't write scripts or make movies, but seriously. how many remakes were there last year. hell, how many have there been so far this year, and how many are left to be done. making remakes is getting almost as tiring as the remakes themselves
By kebgd at 4:59 AM ON 05/26/09
I wouldn't mind seeing a buffy movie by Joss but I think they should start from the begining with new actors. I think the idea of Buffy was at it's strongest when Buffy was a teen.
By hulk-lite at 5:28 AM ON 05/26/09
@Scanner:
Sticks and may break my bones, but they're making a new Buffy movie without Joss Whedon. Suck it.
By CJAnderson at 8:10 AM ON 05/26/09
roflmao - unbelieveable the arrogance!
Remember "the Lone Ranger Movie" remake when they dissed Clayton Moore? These guys would get more out of flushing their money down the drain!
By kriziag at 8:39 AM ON 05/26/09
The first original movie was absolutely awful and if this actually gets made, then I expect it to be just as awful with more technology available to them (which, ironically, could make it suck even more if done right). Frankly, the movement behind "Buffy" didn't start with the movie, the movement is behind Joss Whedon. If you remove JW, nobody is going to follow the movie save a few individuals who want to see how badly it'll actually tank without him. And if JW were to be consulted in terms of signing on, I don't think he'll do it without the original cast (or at least some of them). In other words, "Buffy" without Whedon = movie that will make you no money.
By Kirsty at 8:51 AM ON 05/26/09
This is ridiculous. It's the whole "Twilight is selling really well so let's get anything with vampires out right now".
I thought the buffy movie was funny with it's cheesy puns but Buffy the series was just genius. We had so many amazing episodes (The Body, The Wish, Normal Again, Once More With Feeling etc) and SMG delivered what Kristy could not, she gave the show heart and feeling and you felt for Buffy and her struggles. Plus SMG was a much better actress.
The only reason people will see this movie is to see how bad it is. We don't need another Buffy movie and if we did it would be with the cast of the series, the cast we've come to know and love over the many , many years it was on.
By DanJack at 9:27 AM ON 05/26/09
That's too bad to hear, but maybe now Buffy fans will understand the pain that Star Trek fans are feeling having the franchise pissed on by J.J. Abrahams (regardless of how entertaining it may be) and the canon ignored.
By elvenangel at 10:22 AM ON 05/26/09
This is the worst idea ever...atleast the Reboot of Star Trek made sense in the canon verse. When ever they wanted to change things up they used 'time' travel as a way to do it. It really isn't out of line what JJ Abrahams did. It made perfect sense without destroying the canon we all know. Its simply a split off universe which we've known have existed since the original with its various universes.
This buffy incarnation how ever is complete blasphemy. The original move was kookie and horrid but mildly entertaining. The TV show was brillant and trying to reboot a movie that fans hated in the first place is just...pure crap.
By Blimpy at 10:38 AM ON 05/26/09

By susie at 11:20 AM ON 05/26/09
Did you know that Fran Rubel Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui were credited in every single episode YET THEY DID NOTHING.
They do not care about Buffy or any of the hard work that Joss Whedon put into the series that actually made 'Buffy' a viable success. All they want is money!!!
It is a known fact that they STILL continue to get paid royalties, and were paid for each episode -- yet they contributed absolutely nothing to the series or the spin-off, Angel. NOTHING!
They made money off a magnificent series based on their failed movie -- not fair!!
If Whedon is not involved, then a stake should be put into this project. If Whedon is not involved, then absolutely not.
By Spaceman Spiff at 11:21 AM ON 05/26/09
What's the matter people?
Don't like someone else coming in and changing everything about the show you love?
Hey don't worry it'll have awsome effects and every series needs a RE-BOOT after a while doesn't it?
Maybe they'll get JJ Abrams to help. He's REALLY good at that sort of thing.
By Captain Calvin Grant at 11:44 AM ON 05/26/09
Maybe with this announcement. Joss Whedon will get off this stubborn, fold my arms, and pout attitude he as been having about not making a Buffy movie. There is no one out there who would not want him to do a new movie, even Sarah Michelle Gellar mentioned she wants to do it.
By jdmimic at 12:29 PM ON 05/26/09

@hulk-lite: What are you, 8? Seriously, you are exhibiting all the class of a teenager that hasn't been potty-trained. You don't like Buffy? Fine. Nobody cares. What people do care about is having to deal with jerks who get their kicks by insulting others while hiding behind an anonymous computer screen.

Haha! The irony of this makes me loooool.
I loved Buffy and Angel and am enjoying the new comics and i would love for there to have been a spin-off based on Faith or Spike or Willow or Giles or ANY of the TV cast!
But no, not even a whif of new movie/tv series goodness. So, i think these people are doing us fans a service. The original cast have gotten too big for their boots and dont want anything to do with the Buffy-verse anymore. So the rights holders think, lets forget them and reboot with new actors like Star Trek. Hell yeah! Great idea!
:Thumbs Up: :Thumbs Up: :Thumbs Up: :Thumbs Up:
Now get JJ involved and exert some of that artisticy licency thingy.
We can now have a town called Sunnyville where meteors fall from the sky that infect angsty teens with superpowers and they join forces to battle the evil Vamps - a race of angsty teen hungry aliens who, in-between meals, sit around most of the time listening to rock music and thinking how to defeat their nemiseses.
Buffy, is the leader of the angsty teens who falls in love with the good looking guy on the farm next door - only to find out he was the leader of the Vamps 100 years ago and she must kill him because, well, she must! She.....just.....has to.....dammit!
Then Buffy dies, gets brought back to life, falls for the new leader of the Vamps and blows up Sunnyville.
I'd watch it!
Go here for more rebooty goodness:

The brilliant idea behind Buffy is the analogy that high school is like living in a horror movie. Thats why the later seasons didnt work as well as the first three. As for another movie from the power ranger people...ummm...no thanks. I would love to see a Buffy movie based on the season 8 comics. That way the tv cast would fit age wise. Who wouldnt pay to see hundreds of slayers kicking butt.

elvenangel,
I can understand questioning the quality of a movie sequel with no Whedon involvement.
But I can't understand the need to revise history by painting the fans as always hating the movie.
The movie was made first. It developed a cult following which led to the series. It's throwing the baby out with the bathwater trying to divorce the two. In fact it is a reasonable conclusion that if that first movie was never made that we wouldn't even know who Whedon is - let alone debating the quality of a project without him onboard.
By lindyxmjh at 2:45 PM ON 05/26/09
Sorry, susie, but you can't really say the Kuzui's did nothing, especially when without them Joss Whedon's Buffy script would never have been discovered, and a television series based on it would never have been produced, nor an Angel spinoff or anything else.
It's a sad fate, but you have to remember that Producers in television rarely are directly responsible for what is shown on screen but still get paid for it.
Also I'm sure it won't be long before they get Joss Whedon back for this, especially after Dollhouse tanks and he'll have no reason not to go back to Buffy for the 3rd revamp, so to speak.
Personally, after the crap that was Season 7, it will be nice to see anything come out Buffy related to both not suck and have a Hollywood sized budget again.

Sounds like another mindless "redux" movie, attempting to play on whatever positive feelings true fans might have for the original versions, or the current public hunger for vampire movies.
They would be better off developing a whole new story line, away from the previous buffy series and movie. It would keep expectations low, and keep fans from trashing what might otherwise be a decent show, because its not a "buffy" show.
By jackjward at 10:44 PM ON 05/26/09

Fact: Whedon wrote the script for the original (1992) film
Fact: The original film HAS got Buffy in it (eponymously titled)
Fact: The TV series had different ACTORS from the original film with additional characters.
Fact: The 1992 film came first, not the TV series.
Opinion: This may or may not suck, I wait and see. If the Kuzuis are using Whedon's original script then it may be good.
By Xander at 6:40 AM ON 05/27/09
When I think of this the word Awesome comes to mind... No wait that's wrong, Abomination that's the word I was looking for. Thanks for taking one of my favorite characters and shitting on it! That first Buffy movie blew, it wasn't until the series that we saw the true intended character. This movie should never see the light of day.
By a different tim at 9:46 AM ON 05/27/09
Yeah they need to leave the original film alone. There was so much subtlety in the humor which made it hilarious even though it wasn't a GREAT film it was still good. The series was also only good because they lost touch with their fanbase and turned it into an over emotional soap opera in the last few seasons. It seems that Hollywood is getting lazy with looking for new material, or there is just simply not enough material. Either way they should knock it off.
By Memphremagog at 10:21 AM ON 05/27/09
This isn another pathetic attempt by Hollywood to capitalize on the whole TWILIGHT/TRUE BLOOD thing(which themselves are BUFFY tv series knockoffs..)
No originality left in Hollywood whatsoever these days..just sad.
By Deb at 11:01 AM ON 05/27/09
Most commenters here, if they're honest, aren't invested in the characters so much as the actors that played them. Oh, and they're big ol' "Joss is God" sycophants. So it's tough to value anything these people say since it's not based on logic or any actual thought process.
I enjoyed the original movie for what it was - a unique take on the vampire legend done with campy humor. Will that same style work in a remake? No, I don't think so, because we did have the TV series which took it in another direction and, therefore, it's no longer a unique idea.
The TV series was not a huge success and even if everyone who ever watched it refused to set foot in the theatre for this movie, it would not mean the movie would fail. However, I believe the TV series is enough a part of our culture to the point that trying to ignore its style in a remake and revert to the campy version would make it unsuccessful.
However, if they retool it into a more serious, action-packed movie with the requisite hot actors and quippy humor (Joss isn't the only person who can write snark), then I think it can be successful. You only have to look at Star Trek to see how all the fan backlash did nothing to hurt its success. Make a great movie and they will come.

The movie was HORRIBLE and that's without comparing it to the series.
This "remake" is probably going to bomb - even if the fans of the series were to support it whole-heartedly.
But hey - the good news - Kuzui will be providing jobs in this crappy economy. I wonder if they need a gopher? I'm available, lol.

I understand that among the general masses of the entertained that there's a vast ignorance of the history of theater and the origins of acting and scripted performances. And yet, I still thought that of any subgroup of those entertained that this one would get it that a character's performance need not necessarily be tied to one performer.
Especially, Buffy which was created by Whedon in his original script to be a teenager. That leaves a small window of time in which any actress can credibly play the role.
Now I enjoyed both the movie's low-budget B movie fun and the tv series it inspired. However it seems odd that most of the fans of the TV series seem to be unanimous in agreement that if any movie could use a do-over the original movie would benefit from one. Where they seem confused is they believe, possibly out of misguided actor loyalty, that SMG could still credibly play that teenager?
I know this isn't the movie that you series-only fans wanted, but surely you see that with each disparaging remark towards the original that you make, you are only making a stronger case that the Kuzuis are right that their picture could benefit from a remake?
I'm with Tinkerbell. They've got the original script and all rights to it. They probably even still have all of Whedon's original notes and written suggestions from the first production. It's not impossible that they could steer a remake into a better picture. Why not give it a chance?
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed SERENITY and would champion a likewise Whedon helmed BUFFY movie too. In fact, we would be wise to remember that this is a Hollywood that once released two EXORCIST sequels from different production companies in the same year.
It's odd that people keep bringing up the new STAR TREK movie because didn't the BUFFY series establish parallel universes in the Buffyverse?
By luzara at 4:47 PM ON 05/30/09
i'm sure that the powers that be think that this is an excellent time to capitalize on their version of the movie buffy, but i think this would be a horrible idea. this would kill the entire dream that true tv buffy fans have been waiting for. without the original cast and crew of the much beloved tv series, this would be disasterous. there will be no way that i would pay to watch this. it can't be allowed.
By Son of a Maui Portagee at 2:26 AM ON 06/01/09
luzara,
If the first picture didn't "kill the dream" of a fully realized BUFFY why would a remake of it so do?
I just don't see the two projects as mutually exclusive. If one lead to the other in the past why wouldn't a remake be able to do likewise again?
Series-only fans have simply got to accept that the movie was made first, and developed enough of a cult following for what it was to get the series its green light. Maybe the remake could get your series cast movie its green light?
By ana at 7:43 PM ON 06/01/09
without Joss Wedon, there is no BTVS period. and who the hell is going to watch a movie without the characters people grew to love? its just...pointless. if Kuzui knows what is good for him/ her, they will get Wedon and the cast members on board. Otherwise, its got FAIL written all over it.

"Most commenters here, if they're honest, aren't invested in the characters so much as the actors that played them. Oh, and they're big ol' "Joss is God" sycophants."
Wrong and wrong, but thanks for playing.
"So it's tough to value anything these people say since it's not based on logic or any actual thought process."
Unlike your post, of course.
"I enjoyed the original movie for what it was - a unique take on the vampire legend done with campy humor. Will that same style work in a remake? No, I don't think so, because we did have the TV series which took it in another direction and, therefore, it's no longer a unique idea."
Fair enough. I don't think the remake will be anything like the original movie.
"The TV series was not a huge success"
Now that's just stupid. It was a worldside hit and the DVD sales have been incredible.
" and even if everyone who ever watched it refused to set foot in the theatre for this movie, it would not mean the movie would fail."
True, it wouldn't. But then no one in "the fandom" really believes that by not going they'll make the movie fail, financially. They're simply expressing their disappointment.
"However, I believe the TV series is enough a part of our culture to the point that trying to ignore its style in a remake and revert to the campy version would make it unsuccessful."
Agreed.
"However, if they retool it into a more serious, action-packed movie with the requisite hot actors and quippy humor (Joss isn't the only person who can write snark), then I think it can be successful."
Also agreed. A remake isn't a bad idea in itself. If its well-written, well-acted and well-directed, no reason at all why it shouldn't be amazing. But Hollywood has proven time and again that those three things are fairly low on its list of priorities.
"You only have to look at Star Trek to see how all the fan backlash did nothing to hurt its success. Make a great movie and they will come."
Totally agreed.

Buffy anything - Slayer anything with out Joss???? I can't come up with the words to say just how WRONG this is. I really don't care who 'owns the rights'...this is so very wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By River Finch at 9:51 PM ON 06/06/09
I don't see why people really want a movie of Buffy...
To me the series finale was perfect, with Buffy just standing there smiling. It was satisfactory, it was bitter-sweet because you knew Buffy had ended but it looked as if the character was happy. As well I love the fact that through Angel we were able to learn a little bit more of what happened, how everyone was here or there.
If you ask me, and Joss if for some godforsaken reason you ever go on here and read these, I want to know more about Shepherd Book's life and possibly have another Firefly based movie...please? Come on, you know you want to.
Also, as numerous people have repeatedly said, there really is no Buffy without Joss and all of the regular writers on the show. Marti, Jane, everyone there. They made Buffy as we all know it, it just would not feel right for someone else to do it.
By Carrie at 7:33 PM ON 06/08/09
I will not watch that show, the first movie sucked, unless it is the real Buffy- w/ Joss, SMG, and the rest of the scoobies, it is and never will be BUFFY!

'What we actualy need is a SEQUAL to the end of Buffy and Angel not some poxy remake of a film not worth watching'
Agreed.
Any other way will epically fail. Especially without Joss. Not that i'd want Dollhouse to end because of this terribly revolting idea.

The best part of the original movie was a half hearted performance by Donald Sutherland....
Once you got past the minorly unique concept of a sexy cheerleader taking on undead killers the movie was a dud .....The villains were silly and cliche and Mrs Swanson while georgeous and well spoken was not inspiring
The series was something that many commenters like this Hulkabut or whatver can't seem to grasp ..it was fun....larger than life and even if the plots were a little silly....it had characters that were identifiable and sympathetic ...At times it played on the old people and traditional culture suck theme a little to much but was always able to provoke emotion and thought without being a heavy handed B-movie satire like the original...Remove Sutherland from the original and you have late night horror movie marathon fare sandwiched between bad remakes of The Haunting and reruns Dark Shadows...
Swallow your pride and pocket book and give Buffy fans something .....If you cant bring yourself to hire Weddon at least bring some of the characters back
By Misty at 9:38 AM ON 06/12/09
Buffy only became a hit by its characters and the actors who played them did an excellent job. You cant have a Buffy movie without the actors and it would defiantly be a flop without Angel, Giles, Willow and Xander.
I always say that the thing that made Buffy stand out from the old movie was the chemistry between Buffy and Angel. If there’s no Angel then there’s no point for a movie.
Also, I know there are many good actors out there but there is no way any one would be good enough to be casted in the movie. And if someone did agree to act in the movie they will have some really big shoes to fill and some really big questions to answer by the die-hard fans!
By JenniferV at 11:23 AM ON 06/12/09
I will NOT watch a BTVS movie without the participation of Joss Whedon. I have spent a good chunk of money over the years for my love of that show/movie and WILL NOT be a part of it with so many drastic changes to the storyline. Also, I will advise others to not take part in it as well.
By Jade at 4:48 AM ON 06/15/09
This sounds like disaster.
Im a massive Buffy fan and I dont think id be able to watch this movie without any of the characters that make it Buffy. As well as the no Joss thing.
Honestly, just think about for a second. Is this movie really needed? Wev'e come this far through life without it, I think we can go on without it.
Dont ruin a perfectly good show
By Mand at 5:12 PM ON 06/18/09
Yeah, the cast have said they are not interested in a movie - because logistically, they are too old. Spike and Angel would look like the world's oldest vampires! But there is no way I would watch a Buffy movie without SMG, Willow, Spike or JOSS. Forget about it. Buffy occupies a certain cultural space that is meaningful to many people: as a feminist and social commentary it is particularly meaningful to me. Joss and his team made it that way, and I do not trust anyone else to keep that alive. I loved the new Star Trek, but will skip a bastardized Buffy. I'll stick to my comics, thanks!
By Son of a Maui Portagee at 5:39 PM ON 06/20/09
@Mand,
An observation: SMG neither appears in, nor otherwise contributes to the comics. Perhaps your mind is capable of enjoying more varying renditions of the Buffy character by various artists, and I include in that group actors, than you give it credit.
By Son of a Maui Portagee at 11:30 PM ON 06/20/09
@Jade once said "Honestly, just think about for a second. Is this movie really needed? Wev'e (sic) come this far through life without it, I think we can go on without it.
Dont ruin a perfectly good show"
I honestly don't think you are really thinking about this.
The original motion picture came first. Without it, we would not be here typing about the tv series. Ergo, we could not get along this far in life without it.
By far, the majority of the tv series fans, who btw happen to be new to Buffy fandom as it did exist prior to the show, have disparaged and denigrated the original motion picture to no end. This only bolsters the reasoning of those that would remake that movie. Eventually, as you and others continue to diminish it they will reach the quite logical conclusion that ANY remake of it, even one without Whedon, will be more successful than it was and will so proceed.
The first motion picture's existence didn't ruin a tv series but rather, caused an excllent tv series to be. It does not follow that a remake of it somehow would tarnish the excellence of the tv series anymore than it would that the existence of the tv series "ruined" the original motion picture.
By Elisa at 2:08 AM ON 06/22/09
Buffy without Whedon is like Star Wars without Lucas. This is going to be a disaster. If they want to start a new franchise they would be better off making a whole new slayer and let Buffy's memory live on.
By Daulton at 3:37 PM ON 06/22/09
I agree, why not do a movie about other slayers, go off the comics: Fray might make a good movie.
By savannah at 3:26 PM ON 07/02/09
I will not go see a buffy movie without sarah michelle gellar. This is a terrible idea.
By BuffyFanatic at 10:20 PM ON 07/05/09
This movie idea could be a great thing if it were from the mind of the great Joss Whedon. Although Kuzui had a hand in the production of the tv series, it would be terrible if they tried to re-make something that was horrible to begin with. Joss raised the movie idea from the grave with the hit show, and now they want to bury it on the big screen again. I don't see how this movie would have nothing to do with the tv show since the first movie tied in to the show very nicely.
Terrible, terrible. And to all those Twilight fans, guess what, Vampires don't glisten in the sun. They burn into ashes, among other things.
By agentzac at 12:11 PM ON 07/06/09
A reboot in the manner the Kuzui's are contemplating is absurd. Alienating the fans of the series is not the way to make a successful Buffy movie. The comparison to the Star Trek re-boot is also unfair. The ST reboot may have played with canon and offered a different time-line but the main characters of TOS are present and remain the same, more or less. The new Buffy would retain Buffy and nothing else. That is totally unacceptable.
By Once more w/ feeling at 3:54 PM ON 07/06/09
I'd like to see a continuation of the series, but not a remake of the canon.
I liked the original movie when I was 8, but I re-watched it and it was garbage. Can't imagine a remake of that as being anything but garbage.
The movie, if made, should take place 10 years after the series ended and should not include the original cast (as much as I would love that) because there is too much risk of damaging the series. The only original cast member should be Xander, and he should be leading a small contingent of new slayers. There should be cameos or simply references to the other original cast members, but anything else is just too much risk to the original series.
By sarahkat21 at 1:59 AM ON 07/09/09
After years and years of Buffy fans begging and pleading for a buffy movie...we are given hope in the form of a reboot lacking all of what made the tv show so loveable. They're going to butcher another loved story for the sake of money...ridiculous. Joss and at least part of the original cast should be involved. Not the dumbass that turned the original movie into a campy-teeny bopper comedy. lame.
By Spiridus at 12:53 PM ON 07/11/09
Must be nice to have money to waste! This is going to be an instant disaster!
By akatsuki at 10:33 PM ON 07/12/09
there is no sara michelle gellar, nicholas brendan, alyson hannigan, or joss whedon it just wont work i mean it would be like taking away george lucas from star wars or j.k. rowling from harry potter or stephanie myers from twilight they are probably going to get bad reception now if they really wanted to make some money off of it they would take one of the story lines from the comic and make it in a movie or better yet they could make the whole season eight into one but even with that without the original actors it would suck
By confusedfan at 2:25 AM ON 08/06/09
okay, well....i dont think we could ever have a buffy movie with smg or alyson or nick or anything like that, because they are simply just too old to play our beloved characters. so if they do make a movie, i think it should be just a remake of the original. but i dont think they should create it without joss. no one has a grasp of who buffy is like jw. he is the mastermind behind buffy, he created her and without him it will not be her. if it comes out, i will watch it because it is buffy. but i truly hope that they get joss to help.
By Nicole at 5:42 PM ON 08/06/09

By Alyssa at 5:47 PM ON 08/08/09
I dont think I am the only one who feels this way but here goes: I DONT want a remake of the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I DONT want anyone but the original actors from the tv show playing these characters in a movie. The best thing would be to just not have a new movie made. It would just be too disapointing if we couldnt have Smg, Nick, and Alyson.

Without Whedon and the Scooby gang, what's the point?
By mrnickster at 9:44 PM ON 08/19/09
Wow... just wow...
Since the series ended Joss and company have tried to do some sort of movie production but they either didn't have funding or SMG wasn't available.
So now that SMG is available they decide to do the remake? Without any of the series characters?
If they are simply remaking the original 92 disaster flick then at least get someone else to play Buffy. Sorry but SMG at this point in her life will be hard pressed to pull off a high schooler.
In regards to Whedon - it's a well known fact that if Joss isn't involved, or gets his approval, it isn't cannon! It isn't BtVS.
I love Sarah, one of the best and most funny actresses ever, but still this doesn't look good at all. It's not what the majority of the fans want. I hope the producers step back and rethink it all. Through the omnibusses people know how Buffy started but what we don't know is how it will end and right now Joss is still putting out the comics.
It's neither the right time nor the right people making this thing (exception being SMG of course).
But if they really are going to try and do this? Good luck, I look forward to seeing it despite my many reservations. Hopefully afterwards the comics will be wrapping up and Joss can wrap the entire buffyverse up with a movie or something, even if you need different actors to play the characters.
By LiveBreathQuoteBuffy at 1:17 AM ON 08/21/09
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and here is mine...
The 1992 movie...I like. A great, entertaining take on vampires in the early 90s. It may have flopped, but I bought it and I still pull it out to watch. Anyone that comes to my house and has not seen it...I make them watch it. Haha! I'm torturous!
The tv-show...I LOVE it! I quote it! I compare it to my life! I tattoo it on my back! I watch the same episodes over and over and still laugh or cry. I love what Joss made Buffy into. He took a teenage girl and we watched her grow up. She made mistakes...she went thru shitty times....Everyone female out there could relate to Buffy in some way and come out of the series with some enlightenment to their own life.
The rumored-upcoming movie---I will go see it! a) for the hell of it b) because it is still Buffy (SMG or not)
We need to look at it like this. Buffy is a character...not an actress. SMG only did an amazing job with her and we seen her as Buffy for so long its gonna be hard for us old-schoolies to see a different Buffy. But every generation of girl needs their own Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Honestly...how many times do you think Superman or Xmen or any other epic movie is going to get re-made. Are we gonna throw tantrums then too?? We're getting all worked up over who's playing the characters instead of what they stand for.
And we can't really say if this new movie will flop or not. Take Twilight for example. Shot low-budget based on a teens book. Fans threw fits because the movie didnt exactly go with the book, but it still managed to become a world-wide phenomenon. We got grandmas wanting a piece of poor 17 year-old Edward.
Hell....Twilight was probably the spark behind the new Buffy movie anyway. The world went vampire crazy....and Kuzui only wants their part. Let them do it.
I'll go...I'll watch it....I'll decide if it's worth anything or not....but I'm gonna be supportive....like any TRUE Buffy fan would!
By Sean at 5:29 PM ON 08/22/09
"Exactly! What Mrs. Kuzui did was create a brilliant satire - something that Whedon has never had the cajones for."
It's a bit beyond the appropriate time, but I feel I must inform hulk-lite that "cajones" is actually the Spanish for "drawers". Not that it invalidates your entire point or anything, although it would be funny if it did.

@LiveBreathQuoteBuffy,
My thoughts exactly. I'm with you.
These WB TV blindered so-called BUFFY fans have simply got to get over it.
The CW series was a reboot without the original cast that gives proof to the lie that somehow BUFFY can not be rebooted and succeed.
The original motion picture was not a "TOTAL" failure - if it was, the WB series would never have been launched, i.e. NO network executive would have risked it.
Fans exist of all incarnations of Buffy - not just the TV series and its cast.

By wesley's girl at 10:54 PM ON 09/17/09
Every Whedon fan I know of has wanted a Buffy movie (or Angel) since the shows ended. This idea, however, is not what any of us wanted. No old characters, plots, and most importantly, no Joss. I watched Angel and Buffy before I actually saw the movie. Which sucked. Instead of a remake, they should follow the end of the shows, maybe into the comics, or at least make one of the books into a movie. I am curious if they series actors, and Joss, were offered their parts and turned them down, or weren't even considered. If its the latter, I am definitly not watching.
By lottie at 11:07 AM ON 09/20/09
i loved the series still do now and im only 16! i liked the movie too i mean it was ok but it lacked joss' genius sense of comedy and action. this movie will be 1 of those seen it all before 2star movies. What they should of done is waited till SMG and David were free then asked joss to create a one off movie about buffy and angels relationship and give the fans the ending they desired. If they did that theyd soon see millions of fans all over out boxin the boxoffice theyd have a new record! ANd if you want to attract new fans shove johnny depp and orlando bloom in there and SMG in a bikini-thats all the new generation wants hot people and romance(which youve already got), action and violence. Just mix some of the old with the new. Then EVERYBODY'S HAPPY!!!

I think this movie would be great! its someones interpretation of a great show and they might add something to this movie that is great that was not in the show or movie! I hope they go through with this! I am surprised many fans are apposed to this ideah. just because its new and does not have a the original cast of the show does not mean it can't be a good movie! The buffy show was new at one point and time and everyone loved it! why not give this movie a chance?
By PoorOldEdgarDerby at 12:40 AM ON 10/05/09
You know what? I doubt I can contribute anything new. You guys who are at all excited by a Joss-less Buffy have clearly missed something in your education.
By Archangel_of_Secrecy at 3:27 AM ON 10/05/09
Buffy the movie and Buffy the series are one and the same, granted the movie left something to be desired. In case anyone forgot the series picked up where the movie left off. So I believe continuing that storyline and not doing a complete 180 is the way to go...
The complaints of SMG being too old to portray a teenager.. By the end of season 7 they were no longer teenagers. The characters were well into their twenties. While SMG may not need to be the main character she definitely has to have a part in it as well as the rest of the original cast members. It could be a "passing of the torch" kind of thing.
Without the Joss "touch" it would be hard pressed to call this Buffy.
By Mixed Martial Arts at 1:35 PM ON 10/08/09
ugh horrible idea
why would they try to mess up something thats so cool!
they just want to cash in!
By Opalecent at 11:50 PM ON 10/11/09
If the creators want to cash in on the vampire craze that has hit in light of *shudders* twilight and trueblood, they need to do it in a way that doesn't destroy the Buffy name for those true die hard fans. They need to pick up where the last show left off... a council in ruin, and handful of freshly activated Slayers. Focus on how they rebuild the council, how they start to train numerous slayers at once, and pick like 3 main slayers to focus on. It would be an easy way to fit what we all loved in a way that wont make us want to stake them as if they were Harmony incarnate.
By Laura at 10:28 PM ON 10/12/09
I'm rather excited that a new movie is in the works, but I can't stand it without Joss being there to create/direct it nor if they don't have Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy.
I will admit that the 1992 was a flop, but I still own it because I'm a Buffy fanatic ever since 1997 when I saw the very first episode ever.
I really don't believe there could be another Buffy movie unelss they use the original characters in there and the same actors who played them.
As for a possible remake of the first movie? There is a definite chance it might flop, but since I am a true Buffy fan, I am more than willing to give it a shot if/when they ever decide to get it out there. XD

By alpierce at 2:31 PM ON 11/12/09
They are probably hoping to duplicate the success of the Star Trek reboot. Personally, I wouldn't watch something like this. I'd bet that SMG would not be interested since she just had a child. Of course anything could happen if enough money was thrown at it, but I don't think Buffy the Vampire Slayer as it is right now is as popular as Star Trek was after it's cancellation in the 60's. I think to bring a TV show to the movies ala Sex in the City, you would need that kind of popularity. Even if there are talks about it, I don't see much of the original cast returning.
Still, it would be interesting to see if it was more about the TV series then the movie from the early 90's.

Sarah will always be Buffy.
There's no way around it.
Let's get one thing straight, people. Joss Whedon - you know, the one people are calling a 'hack'? - CREATED Buffy. She was HIS creation. The losers that took over the film didn't get his vision and they butchered it. They ruined it and made it a joke. The show was exquisite, charming and fun. It made you laugh, cry, and everything in between.
There is no Buffy without Joss, Sarah, David, Nick, Alyson, Seth, etc etc.
This idea is a massive fail.

The Star Trek movie was a good film, but it bastardized Star Trek. It was a fun movie, but I probably wouldn't see the sequel. If I had known what they would do to the series I would not have went the first time.

I have thought about this for a while and read all of these comments, and I am pretty sure I agree that we need someone else to play Buffy for the next gen. I will go see this flick with open eyes hoping it is as good as it needs to be. The only thing about this is I really want Joss involved cause even just watching Buffy over and over again u can tell which episodes Joss was directly involved in and the ones that he was not and there is totally a difference.... But I say go for...."once more" and this time "with feeling"!!!

i think whoever thought that this would even make it to the big screen without Sarah, Aylson, Nicholas, David, Michelle, James, and obviously Joss, is a complete idiot! people arent going to see this, unless it involves the same characters and plot/story line. this is going to be a huge fail and i hope they reconcider their poorly choosen decision.

im torn i dont think a buffy movie without smg and scoobys will be good but i would still like to see a remake.if thier gonna have a new buffy i think that maybe our famous heros cheerleader hayden mightbe good.

OMG... I am heartbroken.. SMG is Buffy.. They thought Megan Fox or Kristen Stewart should play buffy.. NO!!!

I think its a cool idea. And being that they made the original 92 movie and own all the rights to Buffy, then why not? Go for it I say. And of cause no connection to Whedon's Buffy means no Sarah geller which opens the door for a new slayer. So I would like to recconmend.
Hayden Panettiere. She is perfect.

MY GOD!! NO JOSS!! NO MOVIE!!! he is the foundation of the buffy series and movie!! you cant just make another movie about his beloved characters and expect ppl to like it!! joss is amazing and this movie is gonna be rubbish i suspect!! none of the real buffy actors are in it! its barbaric!!
JOSSS RULES!!!!!

If they are going to do a movie without James Marsters(Spike), Sarah Michelle Geller(Buffy) and all the rest of her Scoobies and not have Joss Whedon involved..then what the hell is the fricking point??!! The only way I'm going to go see a Buffy movie is if Spike Buffy and the scoobies(and maybe Angel) are in it. The way season 7 left things between Buffy and Spike really ticked me off. I actually stopped watching normal tv shows cause of that. Im only now starting to watch some n im not even like i was with Buffy. If u do a Buffy movie, those guys HAVE to be in it..otherwise, it's going to FLOP bigtime!!

I wish hollywood would stick to some thing that worked and put it on the screen, but hollywood just doesnt see what works.Take off your blind folds. Bringing in a new cast to revamp this movie is gonna disappoint true Buffy fans. ISure they wanna bring in a new fan base, but hey true Buffy fans can bring them in, put on the DVD tv seires, and we have a new fan base. Hey I got interest cause of SMG(fan of hers) and I was hooked, the cast worked. The season 7 ending left things open even had another "Hellmouth" they could go to. Why not continue that story. Come Hollywood are you really that blind and cant see what the fans want. Luke Perry and Swason Buffy movie floped. The tv series did better then the movie. Once AGAIN Hollywood has to mess up some thing that worked and would probably work on the big screen. But hey we're only the ppl that buy the tickets what would we know? Fran Rubel Kuzui last movie was the original movie and we see the ratings of that movie. And that was the only movie FRK did, gee picked a great person to revamp Buffy. Without the cast frm the TV series this movie just isnt gonna work. The revamp just is gonna BITE like the original.

I don’t mind the idea of a new movie. If Joss Whedon is behind it.
But I’m such a huge fan of Sarah as Buffy I don’t no if I could deal with a different "wanabe" Buffy.
and i love willow and xander and giles and angel!
However I would watch it but only if Joss Whedon was involved

Are these people serious.. The movie was horrible because Joss had lost control, do they honestly think that this is going to go over well with Buffy fans. It is not going over well with me and I am a pretty big fan. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!!!!!

The whole idea sucks. You wanna make a Buffy movie?
No problem. Call Whedon, make Season 8 in movie or episodes Make ecranisation of comics or make a new storiline instead.
But new beginning? Without Whedon and his characters? WTF, this people what - just want to make money on Buffy? And we will get an average horrow movie with some blondie running around killing vamps?
No way!

if this movie is created then it would be like erasing the 7 years of buffy. its a bad idea.
example: the remake of 90210 and melrose place. the ppl of today dont know about the original series and dont care for it. it'll turn ppl the other way.
the movie shouldn't b created

i think it will be a great idea!
