ABC officially announced the pickup of new shows Eastwick and Flash Forward for fall, along with the "re-imagined" V and the last season of Lost for midseason, during a Tuesday press conference with journalists about the new fall 2009-10 schedule.
Eastwick will be part of a Wednesday night comedy block, while the "buzzworthy" Flash Forward leads off Thursdays for Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice, said ABC Entertainment Group President Steve McPherson. Eastwick explores what happens when three witches come into their power and stars Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price and Jamie Ray Newman.
Flash Forward is based on the Robert J. Sawyer novel about a mysterious event that causes everyone in the world to black out and get a glimpse into their future. The series stars Joseph Fiennes, John Cho and Jack Davenport.
"Eastwick [is] obviously based on the original [1987] movie, but really kind of a reconceptualization of what that is," said McPherson. "It's really a series that I've said I think will only be on ABC. It's that kind of perfect mix of comedy and drama and character relationship and fun that I think is what we've become known for. We feel like it's a good end to the evening. It takes us a little bit more dramatic, but still keeps the fun and the lightness of the evening. ... I think Eastwick is going to be a sleeper that I think a lot of people are going to be surprised by."
As for Flash Forward, taking over Ugly Betty's Thursday-night spot, McPherson admits it was a big decision. "Flash Forward has already generated millions of hits online to our 'What did you see?' campaign. It's the most buzz-worthy show we have right now, and we really wanted to build on the success of Private Practice and Grey's being a perfect pair and bolster our Thursday night, which has been incredibly successful for us. We think there's no better lineup right now than Thursday nights. With Lost having launched at 8, we really feel that there's a great opportunity for Flash Forward as well," McPherson added.
While McPherson admitted that Flash Forward was indeed science fiction, he said the David S. Goyer and Brannon Braga series is actually "an intimate, personal story about really the question of fate. Can you change your fate? Of love and loss and all the things that go into 'What if we knew our future?' So I think that one specifically. ... It's science fiction in the sense that there's that one event, but it really isn't moving forward that. And I think as you get to the mythology, [it] is absolutely unbelievably grounded."
As for V, about visitors from another planet who aren't quite what they claim to be, the sci-fi drama will be a midseason replacement. V stars Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost), Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch (The 4400), Laura Vandervoort (Smallville) and Morena Baccarin (Firefly).
"We had a very good development season. I would say one of the best I've ever had at the network. And with V and Happy Town coming, we feel like we've got two really other event dramas that can help us," said McPherson.
V has a "normal order right now, 13 episodes. We really, from the beginning, want to craft a whole series, and we'd like to be able to announce what that is at the time that it airs. At this point we believe it's going to be in four parts, and those will be anything from 13 to 22 episodes in each part. But it will have a beginning, middle and end," he added.
The one returning sci-fi series, Lost, will be in its final season when it comes back in midseason. McPherson said that Lost executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse are excited about the show's last year. "I think that was obviously a tough decision a few years ago to give it an ending, but I think it really paid off. This season was stronger than it's ever been because there wasn't an infinite middle to the show. So I think, giving them an end date, you're going to see probably some of the strongest writing you've ever seen on the show, because they've been able to really retrofit from exactly where they want to end up."
As for cancellations, Cupid joins Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone and Life on Mars.

I really wanted "Flash Forward" to succeed. Then I saw it was a Braga project. God help us all.

Is this the same Braga That did the Series Enterprise
Because if it is he did a great job with it.I wish they would bring back the Enterprise Series .I had never watch it until a few months ago . I listen to all the nay sayers back when it was on prime time saying it was bad,but looking at it now it really is a go show.Would like to see them bring it back with same cast and do theRomulan wars.

ctmm, Berman and Braga threw away their opportunity to do the Romulan Wars when they gave all the technology the Original Series had to the Enterprise Series. The Romulan Wars was supposed to be fought with nukes and lasers. If they would have done the romulan wars instead of the that awful Xindii story arc the show might have survived. Before Gene Roddenberry died he had given more than enough background stories to do a really good prequel series. They didn't need to invent a whole new set of aliens and problems for the series. There was the romulan wars and a federation/klingon war that could have been covered rather than a temporal cold war that was ALWAYS talked about, but never explained before the end of the series.
Now the final half-season they had should have been stretched out to be the story arcs for seasons 2 and 3. If they would have been doing things like that we'd still be watching new episodes. The cast was good, but the writing was awful.
Star Trek: Enterprise is like a modernized version of Galactica 1980 to me.

Braga also does 24.

boycott V as it is just YARM which means yet another remake.
remakes work for studios because folks supprt them but if enough folks don't support YARM a lot of it might go away.
think of it that V timeslot could of gone to a new fresh and cool science fiction show.
BOYCOTT YARM !!!!
Spread The Word !!!

@Archer....He did "this" season of 24 and he was a second string producer not series creator producer like most of his other series. Big difference.
@Bobanort...Was there any real plans to do a Romulan War style show? I always hear Trekkies wishing one would get filmed but I have never heard anything concrete that there were plans.
I think the premise of FlashForward is interesting, but after reading a synopsis of the novel, I am kinda scared for it. I guess we all will have to wait and see.

@IsoTek...Never heard anyone doing a treatment for one, but you can bet your last dollar on the fact I'd have watched the show religiously if they had someone who was worth something make it (Joe Straczynsky comes to mind . . .he would have been a good choice - look at what he did with a low budget show like Babylon 5!!). Too bad they didn't make Enterprise about the Romulan War. The romulans were really under used as a villain in Star Trek. I'm really glad JJ used them in the new movie just because of that fact.
Cheers!

I am from the old school of V, and own the complete DVD collection. Tuesdays episode was so bad that I will not be watching again. The story started out loosely following the story then, then turned it in to a hybrid of Sleeper Cell and Battlestar Galactic with elements of Numbers. For prime time I cant believe that cancelled shows like Moonlight, the Unit and 4400, for this over CGI'ed show if they had kept to the original script, with the latest Special Effects it could have been a fantastic show, instead of another over rated over price "B" rated SI-FI.
