Angels & Demons is tops; Star Trek stays strong

\<i\>Angels & Demons\<\/i\> is tops; \<i\>Star Trek\<\/i\> stays strong

[Updated: Final figures Monday show Angels & Demons took in $46.2 million, a bit less than estimated, and Star Trek took in $43.03 million, a hair more than estimated.]

Angels & Demons took the top spot at the May 15 weekend box office, with an estimated $48 million domestically, far less than its hit predecessor, The Da Vinci Code, which racked up $77.1 million in its first weekend in 2006, the Associated Press reported.

Star Trek, meanwhile, slipped to second place with an estimated $43 million, down a respectable 43 percent from its blockbuster opening weekend (not including Thursday-night preview screenings), raising its domestic take after 10 days to about $147.6 million and cementing its status as a hit with legs.

The Da Vinci Code eventually took in $753 million worldwide.

Star Trek is also the most successful film in the franchise internationally, having rung up about $70 million over two weeks, surpassing the second-most successful Trek movie internationally, First Contact, which grossed a total of $57.4 million overseas, according to Deadline Hollywood.

That's good news for Paramount, which has wanted to boost the franchise's appeal in foreign countries (beyond stalwart Trek nations such as the United Kingdom and Germany).

No movie in the franchise has ever cracked $100 million overseas before, but Abrams' Star Trek is already on track: Paramount is predicting that the film will do around $150 million internationally and around $400 million worldwide, Deadline Hollywood estimated. Star Trek's worldwide total so far is $216 million and counting.

I think the inportant thing here is it only took one week for star track to lose the #1 spot. I'm sure people will still be watching it in 43 years. Just like we are all watching
7 Women
Batman - The Movie
Cast a Giant Shadow (with Yul Brynner)
Chamber of Horrors
Days of Anger (with Lee Van Cleef)
Grand Prix
Hawaii (with Julie Andrews)
Hotel
Lady L (with David Niven)
Not with My Wife, You Don't
The top ten Movies (By amount Made)
of all of these me being 44 yrs old have only seen 1. And that the way it is.
Remember no matter where you go.....There you are. Buckaro Bonzai. Which by the way was a much better movie than Star Track. For the right type of people.

Oh, Captain Zacary R Wildstarly-wolly--doodle-all-the-day. You're just so silly. Buckaroo Bonzia? Come on. I haven't even SEEN Star Trek and I know it's a better movie, because no one I've talked to who's seen it is contemplating suicide.

Your observation has less to do with the "legs" Trek has than the number of idiots who either want to ingest Dan Brown's sycophantic religion-bashing or (inexplicably) have nothing better to do with their $10 in this economy.

I know you'll say the same thing about "Star Track," but you've commented enough for everyone to know you have no imagination anyway.

Well, I did my part to contribute, having gone to see the movie this weekend. My wife, not a big sci-fi fan, loved it. Believe it or not, that say a great deal - it seems to me that JJ achieved his goal - I'm a long-time fan, and I loved the movie, my wife not so much, and she loved the movie. She asked (un heard of) if they were making a sequel - now that's something.

By TauCetiPrime at 9:20 AM ON 05/18/09

There is talk about a sequel to Star trek, and rumours about a series. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed Star Trek. She's a Dan Brown fan and we'll likely wait for the DVD to come via NetFlix.

I'm kinda curious what Capt. Zzzzzzzzz did prior to the making of the new star trek film. I mean crusading against a critically and financially successful film (to date more successful than any other Trek film in terms of box office, and far outperforming studio expectations) I guess can be one's life's work; but personally, I find that kind of sad.

My guess is since Star Trek was always thought of a franchise reboot, talk of a sequel has been attached to the project since inception. Anyone know what sort of contractual obligations cast and crew might've had?

By wab1701 at 11:39 AM ON 05/18/09

Marty...I've heard the cast is signed on for at least one more film (could be two--the Hollywood negotiations these days usually have stars committing to at least a trilogy). I'm pretty sure Kurtzman & Orci will write again. As far as JJ, I hope he'd be on for at least one more. If not, we someone whose vision is equalled. Maybe not so many lens flares next time. I freakin loved it!

That's a 46% drop for Trek if you included thursday's take as some do.

By shroudedwolf at 1:34 AM ON 05/19/09

oooooooooo, 46 percent! When you have, in general, a 55-60 percent drop for a "decent" movie over a weekend, even without blockbusters openning the next weekend, the movie is considered a success. 46 percent is out-bleeping-standing. I'm with Mikey on this one. If you wanted the film to tank, tough, a hellza lot of people like it. A lot. You can go do whatever you want to yourselves when you watch your idol, Will Ferrell, crap all over a classic t.v. series...

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 4:39 AM ON 05/19/09

shroudedwolf,

Just to keep our blockbusters in perspective: and WOLVERINE's only 44.3% drop while losing 210 venues while Trek gained 11 is what? SLASHTASTIC?

Also you have to correct for inflated ticket prices. In terms of actual attendance, this Trek is only in 6th place for all Treks. Just edging out GENERATIONS.

It undeniably has potential but can Paramount successfully navigate it through the summer movie blockbuster asteriod field with far more family friendly rated fair mounting up?

Also noteworthy: if a studio feels they've got a blockbuster with legs they usually pull the saturation tv ads and let it ride its own self-sustaining publicity wave. All during this last weekend B.O the TV ads were incessant.

Also, Warner and Paramount, with 2009's biggest theatrical numbers are laying people off.

It may be insignificant as the summer unfolds but I never try to underestimate Paramount's ability to screw up Trek - successful or otherwise.

Maui Portagee,

Are you trying to say that Wolverine is doing better because of two percentage points difference? I honestly don't understand the thrust of your post.

By the way, thank you for at least being reasonable in your defense of your viewpoint. Never once have I seen you make pointed, disparaging comments about another person's point-of-view, even if attacked yourself. I also want to thank you for your apparent mastery of simple spelling and grammar checking.

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 11:59 AM ON 05/19/09

TrekFan,

Those percentages, I regard, as essentially identical. What I see as significant is that WOLVERINE lost 210 theaters while TREK gained 11. In orther words, TREK experienced the same percentage drop while gaining theaters as the veteran did losing nearly 20 times as many.

WOLVERINE is not a media, critical, or word-of-mouth darling and yet TREK, which is, seems to be following the same trajectory that W pioneered.

Thank you for your kind observations on my nature. I lean towards a socratic approach and like its namesake I do get in trouble with TPTB and others from time to time. They especially do not like having their inconsistencies laid bare.
