After a sniping match between NBC and CBS executives about Medium, CBS added the Patricia Arquette supernatural drama to its Friday nights, following Ghost Whisperer, in the upfront announcement of its fall schedule on Wednesday in New York.
As expected, CBS canceled the sci-fi series Eleventh Hour.
The buzz had been that CBS would pick up Medium, which is produced by CBS TV Studios, if NBC decided to cancel it, which it did on Tuesday.
NBC co-chairman Ben Silverman had said Medium was "an aging franchise, without a single fan letter, with no passion" after the show's cancellation.
CBS TV Studios shot back in a statement: "NBC's cancellation of Medium is inexplicable to us. The ratings don't lie: Medium outperforms many of NBC's renewed shows."
Since it's unlikely Silverman would diss the show that had served them well for no reason, his statement likely reflected the knowledge that CBS would pick up the show.
The series, about a psychic mom who helps solve crimes for the district attorney's office in Phoenix, had served NBC over the last five years, filling in for other canceled series and getting consistent ratings that did indeed beat both Heroes and Chuck.
The move gives CBS the opportunity to pair Medium with its other supernatural drama, Ghost Whisperer, about a woman who sees dead people. Ironically, the two shows began the same year on the different networks, although Medium began earlier, during midseason, giving it five seasons, while Ghost Whisperer is in its fourth.
Ghost Whisperer, which stars Jennifer Love Hewitt, has done well on the low-rated Friday nights for CBS, and the pickup was expected. The addition of Medium offers a "hauntingly compatible two-hour block," the network said in a statement.
The Mentalist, the top-rated new series and the one true freshman hit of the 2008-'09 season, will move to Thursdays at 10 p.m., after CSI.
No other new sci-fi or fantasy shows were picked up for fall or midseason by CBS.

Maybe there were no fan letters "after cancellation" because NBC never announced that they were canceling it, in fact the buzz was that it was going to be renewed. And if Medium was an "aging franchise" what does that make Jay Leno?
By LJ at 1:25 PM ON 05/20/09
Medium and Life were 2 shows on NBC with great character development and great writing. I hope Life finds a home on another network too.

How does the f****** Ghost Whisperer get picked up, but The Unit gets canceled? I realize The Unit isn't science fiction, but dear lord, anyone who has watched it would probably agree the stories were far better that GW. I sat through one episode of that once with my grandparents who were watching it, and no joke, predicted the entire course of the episode after the three minute leader. And I was correct about how the entire thing played out. Its not original sci fi, its not original writing, and from what I saw, its not especially inspired acting or directing. And its certainly not original.
I guess I'm just venting, but seriously: how could any self respecting science fiction fan with any exposure to the genre be even remotely entertained by such an unoriginal, not interesting show?

Smart move by CBS. Medium is the best show on TV and improves each year. Medium had been given no respect at NBC. Thrilled that Medium lives on...

One thing that is sadly lacking on Network TV is programming for MEN. The Unit filled that void perfectly. I like Ghost Whisperer and Numbers as well as the rest of the CBS lineup, but come on, guys like it when they see other guys blow stuff up!

Did I miss something? I don't see The Unit in the schedule but I don't see anything about it being canceled, either.
In fact, I read the other day (Ausiello, I think?), that there is a good possibility it IS returning but probably not in the fall (mid-season, maybe).
NCIS and Criminal Minds is about the only reason I watch CBS anymore; CSI has gone to hell--I guess I miss Grissom too much, and I can't stand the whole Danny/Lindsay thing on the NY version. Miami always sucked, IMO.
SOMEONE pick up TSCC, please....PLEASE??

Oh, ffs :(
I didn't keep up with The Unit this year--Sunday nights are for Masterpiece Theater :P Without episodes being available at cbs.com, I only caught maybe two episodes this year. Wonder if another network might want it...
I figured Without a Trace was canceled--LaPaglia is working on a program for AETV (you should see their slate of CRAP for the coming year..there's like two dozens shows)

Great for Medium! Glad CBS has some sense. Will not pair well with Numb3rs, but CBS never has given a great slot to one of the best dramas on network TV.

I stopped watching 'Heroes' but kept watching 'Medium.' Amusing that NBC would cancel it.
By Joe B. at 4:56 PM ON 05/20/09
Boo! hiss! CBS also canceled one of the best shows on TV - The Unit. I'm sure it will be replaced by an hour of crappy programming that won't last through mid-season.
By Bluesman at 8:14 PM ON 05/20/09
CBS could do so much to improve its programming if it would just dump ALL of the Reality Shows, starting with Survivor, followed very quickly by Amazing Race.

I don't know what the exec's at NBC are smoking, but they got to share. Must be some serious good $#!^ judging from the choices they've been making of late.
For me, Medium is one of their best written series, and I don't feel it is tired or aging at all. Good for CBS for picking it up.

I really like Medium and am glad it was picked up by CBS, as for Ghost Whisperer, I still watch and like but the stories have definitely gotten alot softer. The first 2 seasons had a lot of creepy imagery and were a bit more on the thriller side. The show has definitely hit a slower pace. Pairing those 2 shows on Friday is going to be huge for CBS. I also can't understand how The Unit was canceled, it was a brilliant show and brought in different viewers that would otherwise avoid this network. Bad move...Oh and NBC can suck it, I know they kept Chuck which I love but keeping it on the bubble for so long and not giving it a full order is lame...Well at least no matter what I get 13 more episodes...

att:Bluesman, try '24', it's good manly TV, and probably will be on for a few more seasons
By stealthgear at 11:36 PM ON 05/20/09
I love Medium & Patricia Arquette. I'm glad it will be back. I'm interested in whats going on with her family.
By Blix at 12:20 AM ON 05/21/09
Funny how an "aging" show with "no passion" whips the other hip and happening NBC shows in the all important ratings area.
I guess the aging Medium fans will just have to take our wallets over to CBS. Its easy to see why NBC finishes at the bottom year after year.
By farscape03 at 1:50 AM ON 05/21/09
what about knight rider? i like that show
By Bluesman at 2:22 AM ON 05/21/09
@duneboat;
Tried 24. Think it's lame. Sorry, Ex-military Special Forces here.
By misteredj at 5:24 AM ON 05/21/09
Why, why, why woud you schedule two of the same type of shows back to back? GW and Medium to NCIS and NCIS? Granted I like NCIS and all but back to back? And what's the deal with Medium going to Friday anyways? I would watch Medium (and probably just about anything else) than this new Jay leno show. Why give up the tonight show if you are going to do another nightly show on the same channel? TV execs confuse the hell out of me.

Typical NBC move. Medium has always been the bastard child of the network. They never appreciated what they had in the Emmy award winning show, but they were always willing to bring it back when all their other shows crashed and burned. Medium is a show that out performs even NBC's vaunted ZEROS. I only hope CBS treats the show better than they have other great shows of their in the past, like Now & Again. I swore never to watch the network after N&A's cancellation, but I'll just have to make the effort for Medium. Of course, there's an irony in that they are both Glenn Gordon Caron shows.
By Rowan Rose at 6:20 AM ON 05/22/09
How amusing. I had to wait until midseason to see Medium. And I did, checking all the time to see when it was coming on. And now NBC cancels it? It was the only worthwhile show on NBC to watch. I don't watch network TV at all but made an exception for Medium and oh, and because of Medium, Heroes. Guess I'm done with NBC. Idiots.
By rindy at 10:36 PM ON 05/26/09
MEDIUM!! Do we really need to prove our passion as viewers in written fan mail? I didn't know there were requirements as a thoroughly entertained viewer of any programming. Hasn't NBC ever heard the expression 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it?' They're broken now. Medium is at the top of its game in the fifth season and I am more than excited to know that the show will not become a ghost. Kudos CBS, on having the judgement necessary for instant success! Medium viewers are truly grateful.
By Ashley at 1:03 PM ON 05/27/09
Oh thank God CBS picked up Medium! I was devasted to hear that NBC had cancelled it...what a relief! Medium by far has the best writing, acting and directing of any show on television right now. Thank you CBS!
By Amy at 3:39 PM ON 06/02/09
NBC loses out-again! CBS wins MEDIUM! Fantastic show - especially because of great acting and based on true story of Allison Dubois. Poor NBC just can't get it together - let's the good stuff slip through their fingers!!! YAY - MEDIUM!!!!
By phyball at 6:55 PM ON 06/08/09
I love the show Medium. And The Mentalist. Love, love, love. Please let them air. I can think of plenty others that could be canned but not them, for crying out loud!!!
By Eves at 10:37 PM ON 06/08/09
Medium is one of the best shows on TV. Thank you to CBS for picking it up, but Friday at 9pm?? For real?? You have just picked up a gem. At least use it to up your network's ratings by putting it opposite some challenging TV. This is a really well-written and amazing show. Boo to NBC. Jay Leno is so awful. Why would you replace decent shows with another talk show, with Jay Leno of all people?
By activistval at 8:43 PM ON 06/29/09
Medium, Ghost Whisperer, and Heroes are the only mainstream TV shows I can stomach. Mainstream TV has really gone to the crapper, especially mainstream News...What a bunch of scripted infomercial propaganda.
