How original. Maybe it will be like Damnation Alley.

Decoherence, being ignorant of McCarthy's novel belies any effort at clever quipsterism on your part.

Stay in school.

The novel won the Pulitzer for Cormac McCarthy. Not his best work, but a pretty decent post-apocalypse novel. Hope the movie lives u to the book.

You will have to forgive me, but I have seen every, and I mean every, apocalyptic movie ever made, so even this critically acclaimed book turned movie is nothing new. Maybe the acting will be great, and maybe more drama, than scifi/horror, but still. there is a wasteland, and cannibals, and family/boy trying to survive, and find a better place is some other place. and a new family in the end with a potential pair bonding.

Not new, just maybe well made, but good books rarely translates into good movies. And I am always disappointed.

It'll never be better than 'The Postman' w/ Costner. Best post-apoc movie ever.

The Road is not just some apocalyptic film , like mad max or god help us, damnation ally. it is a story full of heart ache and despair. the main theme of the story was the love of the father and son, not cannibals and finding a better place. if people are going to make commements on this site i wish they would at least be informed.
And its nice to see a post NOT about star trek. why does this site feel the need to post non stop drivel about over hyped films then drop the posts the day the film is relased? watchmen was the last time this happaned

Decoherrence, if Damnation Alley is your reference, you're way off the mark. Think Threads. Given your pedestrian understanding of post-apocalyptic films you're touting as some sort erudition, I doubt you've even heard of it.

"Perpetually unimpressed" is a pose most of us who've graduate from school see through pretty easily.

By nghtlfe at 11:11 AM ON 05/02/09

The Road is one of the most depressing, hurtful, beautiful, books I've ever read. It looks at life after an apocalypse with no, absolutely no, form of romanticism. Go watch, The Day After, if you want any kind of idea what this book was like and what this movie will be like. And yet as depressing and heart wrenching, as this books was it was also so beautiful because of the love this man has for his son.

By Marty B. at 12:57 PM ON 05/02/09

The BBC's Threads is a lot more powerful than The Day After and similar to The Road in its full blown nihilistic imagery (I mean, that last shot). It went places American TV producers in the 80s wouldn't dare go. However, it's very hard to find a copy of these days.

Of course "The Road" has been in the can for quite some time now, and has had its release constantly shifted, I think it was supposed to come out last fall. Now, it could be the bleakness of a faithful adapation leaving Hollywood at a loss as to what to do with it, or there could be "problems" with the film.

By Decoherence at 2:00 PM ON 05/02/09

I am so glad you know my resume. NO, "Damnation Alley" is not my reference, I just want a remake of it which is the only reason I ever mentioned it.

"Threads" was quite shocking, at the time. although I was eight years old when I saw it. Only saw it once, unlike 'The Day After' which I have seen every year since it came out. You can still find a few copies of the 'Threads' on Amazon.com.

I think we are all too desensitized to be shocked by films of today. I know I am.

Post apocalyptic films weren't made too often for theatrical release since the 80's. The 90's tried it but Kevin Costner scared the studios with his disasterous movies. I may be one who prefers the post apocalyptic film with zombies, or machines, or aliens, or mutants, or what ever extreme scifi. However maybe this movie isnt my style but hopefully people like Marty B, hermes, nghtlfe, and others you'll get what you want. I can't say anything bad about this, because im getting terminator and other things. So we'll see if the movie can at least capture a fraction of the book onscreen.

Anybody remember a little show called "Jeremiah" (starring Luke Perry & Malcolm-Jamal Warner) that lasted for 2 seasons on Showtime.

By jolinar at 12:05 PM ON 05/03/09

And now it's on scifi in reruns.

By daydaykay at 4:41 PM ON 05/03/09

Just saw a French Film made in 2003 called Time of the Wolf and it too is very much like The Road in its depressing vision of an apocalyptic future. Low budget, no need for effects. Just people and the situation. I also saw Blindness, which while ridiculous in its execution still was creepy in its premise, about how society breaks down once we lose the ability to see.

"The Road," like all of McCarthy's works, is remorseless... not one shred of romanticism, not one ounce of hope in a world that is, quite literally, dead. This book does not describe a Mad Max kind of world where 'life goes on" albeit harsh and merciless in terms of HUMAN mercy. "The Road" describes a world that is, quite literally, DEAD. No plant life, no animal life, no food, nothing in the seas... did I mention no food?

This book is NOT "Damnation Alley," or even "The Day After." "The Road" surpasses any other novel, or movie for that matter, along this vein of "post apocalypticism."

If the producers of this film were faithful to the source material, the ONLY glimmer of light anyone will see is the love the father and son have for each other.... other than this, there is absolutely NOTHING romantic about "The Road." Nothing. It is stark and terrifying if you allow yourself to really dwell on what the story is showing you. Which made the experience of reading it a beautiful thing. So beautiful in fact that the moment I finished the last paragraph, I turned to the first page and began again.

Personally, I expect to be disappointed after watching the movie-- Cormac McCarthy's book is THAT good.

"No Country For Old Men" was a very good adaptation-- better than I expected. "All the Pretty Horses" was passable. but I don't expect to be satisfied after viewing "The Road."

One movie I'd really like to see, assuming it was given a faithful treatment, would be McCarthy's "Blood Meridian." THAT would be a movie to see.

By wilcoy at 12:17 PM ON 05/04/09

The Road at it's core is a story of a father and son on a desperate journey of hope. In that journey is the post-apocalyptic landscape that is totally devoid of life execpt human cannibals and scavengers. Yes, the book can make you feel melancholy at times but it is an entertaing read of bleak survival in a world that is so different than the one we live in now. My only request would be PLEASE TEASE US WITH A TRAILER!!!

By baitedbreath at 11:23 PM ON 05/05/09

Decoherence, you need to read the book. Seriously. I must admit I like the genre, but I read "The Road" because McCarthy wrote it and for no other reason. If you don't think McCarthy is original you are only displaying your complete ignorance.
