Disney is remaking the 1986 sci-fi movie Flight of the Navigator, with Brad Copeland writing the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The remake is being produced by Mandeville partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman.
The original movie told the story of a 12-year-old boy who is abducted by an alien spacecraft in 1978 and reappears eight years later, still the same age and with no memory of what happened. NASA scientists discover a connection between the boy and a downed spacecraft and try to exploit the boy, who ultimately escapes with the ship and attempts to reunite with his family.
The movie grossed only $17 million when it was released but was later rediscovered on VHS, becoming a cult hit.
Copeland wrote Wild Hogs for Disney and is writing Nightcrawlers at Warners.

Some things do NOT need to be remade, and were fine as is. Also: In 1986,a movie grossing 17 million dollars was considered a DECENT take.

Explorers is the movie that need a remake.
Ethan Hawke would be divorced from Amanda Peterson. His daughter would start having the dreams but they have a worried tone and urgency.
River Phoenix would have dissapeared 3 years later with the stone. Bobby Fite would be on otherside of counrty and his kids start having the dreams. They seek each other out and find River Phoenix lab and one of his crazy bothers that has been trying to bring him back for 20 years. The kids staty falling allsleep and not waking up and they all must travel to other side of galaxy to save every one and in doing so save the earth.

Jeez! I still have this movie on VHS, which I found only lately. Do they really have to remake everything nowadays?
Are there no more Writers out there with new original ideas? Or do we have to look back to the 70's and 80's for everything now!?
By kebgd at 4:47 AM ON 05/26/09
Its not the writers its the sudious wanting to do remakes. They belive they have more of a chance of a hit.
By jbweho at 4:56 AM ON 05/26/09
The new version will star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The original kid will cameo as a the local sheriff. The plot will consist of endless chase sequences, cheap Matrix style effects and jokes involving flatulence and other bodily functions and it will be rated PG-13 for mild sexual innuendo involving aliens.

NO NO NO NO NO!
Ohhhh Hellll Nooo!
I loved the movie when it Came out. I fell in love with it. It was sweet and Innocent. No Hard Stuff. And even SJP was in it. They Cannot do a remake.
And No one Can replace Joey Cramer. who played David. He was perfect for that Role. And The Ship...It was Perfect..With just the smallest of CGI effects.
I Do agree though on an Explorer's Sequel. They left the Door wide open for a Sequel.
Hell..Even do a Buckaroo Bonzai Sequel...But for God Sakes..NOT THIS!
No, they Cannot make a Flight of the Navigator Movie!
By Photoprinter at 9:14 AM ON 05/26/09
I totally agree withe everyone. They absolutely should NOT do a remake of Flight of the Navigator. I still watch it every time I see it listed on cable. It has always been a favorite. Just a sweet, funny story. A remake is only going to be a let down. All high tech, flashy CGI we have seen 1000's of time before. I guess most movie producers just do not want to do anything new and refreshing. There are so many scifi stories out there that could be made into great movies without all the BS special effects that are so tiring.

I had forgotten all about this movie, time to grab it on DVD i think.
As for a Bukaroo Banzai sequel, they ahve been trying to do it for years, but no studio can afford the talent anymore! lol how much would it cost these days to make a movie with Barken, Weller, Lithgow, Lloyd, Goldblum, Clancy Brown (the ever popular voice of Mr Crabs)
Explorers, Now that could definatly use a sequel, i just watched it recently with my 11 year old Daughter for the first time, i had forgotten how much fun that movie was.

The original "Flight of the Navigator", which was a fantastic movie and one I rushed to show my kids as soon as they were old enough, was produced by Jonathan Sanger, the same guy who produced "The Elephant Man", "Vanilia Sky", and the film version of "The Producers".
Go look it up yourself at IMDB.COM if you need to see proof.
Does anyone honestly think Disney is going to get someone that talented to remake this? No, they're going to get some hack, make it a staring vehicle for Dwayne Johnson or some such talentless fool of an actor, and fill it with CGI garbage.
Didn't the remake of Willy Wonka prove once and for all that beloved children's movies need to be LEFT THE FRIG ALONE!!

I say we take off and nuke Hollywood from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
By gxknight at 11:31 AM ON 05/26/09
The idea doesn't excite me. Could be interesting I suppose. If anything the remake will mean the great original will get another round in the spotlight, and we'll have yet another example of what idiots the entertainment-powers-that-be are.
What I want to know is...
Where is the remake of Condor Man??? ;-)
By abby0315 at 3:16 PM ON 05/26/09
Why?
Why must every original movie be remade, only for the remake to be utter and complete rubbish. Hollywood needs to be stopped. I say we have a fans strike and demand that the writers and producers make original movies.
By fernando poo at 4:11 PM ON 05/26/09
When a movie is remade or "rebooted", they don't erase the original do they? Do they hunt down all the old copies and burn them? Will someone storm into your house and confiscate your tapes and dvds? I don't think so.
So why are you all acting like babies because a new version is announced?
By scifire at 4:47 PM ON 05/26/09
Where have are all the original movies and TV series gone? Everything is a remake nowadays. What happened to originality? Am I the only one craving for something new? Come on Hollywood, give us new things to enjoy instead of remakes!
By IsoTek at 5:15 PM ON 05/26/09
Remake? No....Though I think they should remake the Disney telefilm "Earth Star Voyager".
@Southpaw....Bobby Fite? He was the bully in Explorers and not part of the original crew. Do you mean Jason Presson's character? So far I like your premise for a sequel.

This movie is going to fail! LOL The Movie sucked in the first place and it will suck again! LOL Stop the Bleeding! LOL
By Richard at 6:22 PM ON 05/26/09
One of the best things about the original was Pee Wee Herman (Paul Reubens) as the voice of the ship. If they must remake it, I hope they sign him up again.
By zzbickyzz at 6:48 PM ON 05/26/09
Disney please continue your originality and not jump on the 'remake' wagon.
Please leave this movie alone, no need to make more than $17M.
By Mandy at 8:18 PM ON 05/26/09
This does NOT need to be remade. What was wrong with the original?
By Lexomatic at 10:40 PM ON 05/26/09
Unlike Richard, I thought the original film went downhill as soon as Max's personality changed into PeeWee Herman. Before that, the tone was delightfully creepy and mysterious. If the remake could sustain *that* tone, I'd see it.
@PhotoPrinter: movies are full of "flashy CGI" nowadays, I agree. But the mirror-surfaced Trimaxion Probe of the original was fantastic, in the proto-CGI era of "Tron," "The Last Starfighter," and "Star Trek II."
(Remember the era of NASA-glorification in juvie films, with this and "Space Camp"? I'm not sure that could be managed again.)
By DJ Jarak at 3:38 AM ON 05/27/09
I loved the original and I don't think a remake is necessary but, I'd still watch it. I just hope too much isn't changed. If it's generally the same but with today's level of digital graphics, that would totally be worth going to see.
By whatthewhat at 9:05 AM ON 05/29/09
F U! hollywood filth..this movie is great in its 1986 incarnation..definitely one of my favorite movies of all time.. This remake bullshit has to stop..whats wrong with just watching the original? Just because there are no cellphones and ipods in every scene and the clothes is a bit dated does not mean its not worthy to still watch. Ugh im disgusted.
By Chuck4455 at 10:43 PM ON 06/01/09
Hi everyone, I own 2 copies of the original 1986 movie and love it, I have seen it well over 2000 times, I would have preferred a sequal to the movie rather then a remake but I would welcome a new take on the movie, perhaps they might even make it a series, anyway I welcome it and can't wait till its made, I will be one of the first to see the remake.

When Disney's originality is producing tripe like "G-Force" it is no wonder they are looking back to re-boot great films from the 80s.
