Friday the 13th helmer Marcus Nispel boards Demeter
Director Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th) is in talks to board the vampire-themed The Last Voyage of Demeter for Phoenix Pictures, with Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer and Brad Fischer producing, Variety reported.
The story, written by Bragi Schut Jr., is based on a chapter in Bram Stoker's Dracula describing the arrival of the vampire count in England on a cargo ship that has crashed into the rocks at Whitby with no crew and the dead captain lashed to the wheel.
Stoker tells the story via the captain's log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear.

That was one of the most intriguing parts of the original Dracula story (despite getting so little actual coverage) so I'm exciting to see what they'll do with it.

Ugh! I hate when the producers of a movie "Mike Medavoy..." are listed. Who cares about the producers? Writers, directors, and actors are the creators.

The Demeter one sounds good. I am actually surprised that wasn't made into a solo film before.

I don't know. The ending is sort of obvious, isn't it? And then that's only a small portion of what we know to be the overall story. It would be like watching Leia's time in the detention cells aboard the Death Star expanded into an entire film. (Oh, I'd better keep my mouth shut before Lucas gets wind of that idea and actually makes it.)

Rafe: If you think producers have little control over the creative direction of a film, think again. Why do you think we have director's cuts on DVD? Why The Watchmen DC is a full TWO HOURS longer than what was initially released? In most cases, the producers, for good or ill, have the final say in what gets to the big screen. They also determine the quality of the production. Big name producers get big money. So yes, producers matter.
