Is the original Alien the latest movie to get the reboot?

Is the original \<i\>Alien\<\/i\> the latest movie to get the reboot?
Sigourney Weaver originally played Ellen Ripley

Bloody-Disgusting, citing an anonymous source, reports the rumor that director Ridley Scott's classic 1979 sci-fi horror movie Alien is being remade at 20th Century Fox.

The source, the same one that told the site correctly that Robert Rodriguez would reboot the Predator series, adds that Scott, his brother Tony and Michael Costigan will produce through their Scott Free Productions company, and that commercial/video director Carl Rinsch will direct the remake.

The movie, like the original, will focus on the threat posed by a hostile alien on a ship in space, with a new Ripley (originally played by Sigourney Weaver).

What a waste of Ridley Scott's time.

By boppo414 at 3:05 AM ON 05/28/09

Amen to that, apparently no one in is capable of coming up with an original idea anymore.

By stealthgear at 3:12 AM ON 05/28/09

I could see them doing a special edition to fix Alien 1's cheesy 70s props, like the AI lightbulb-room, lasers, etc....but to reboot the first work with Sigourney and H.R. Giger designs will be very hard. They'd have to make an entirely new story. Alien 1 isn't my fave. Alien 2 is. Even 3 was amazing!

By Chamelion at 3:14 AM ON 05/28/09

WHY!?

I could see Predator redone; as much as I love that movie, it's got a lot more open to it to make a remake that could be fun.

But Alien is a classic, a well done, claustrophobic space horror...

this is just sad.

By whatttt at 3:29 AM ON 05/28/09

Megan Fox as Ripley. That's would be a start. And she could get in only underwear or less more often. But as far as gross out stuff It would be hard to top the chest burster scene...

By xdeathknightx at 3:36 AM ON 05/28/09

Like Chamelion said: WHY!?

The first two movies were near perfect, why ruin it with a remake? You just know it's gonna be some teen oriented "ooooh look at the pretty effects" crapfest. And wonder if they will even use Giger his designs...
Just start up a new sci fi movie series Ridley Scott!

By LeftHandedMatt at 4:14 AM ON 05/28/09

What a horrible idea. I'm totally invested in the characters and mythology of the Alien series and all I've ever wanted these past 10 years is a decent Alien 5, why can't we just finally have that?

By One at 4:25 AM ON 05/28/09

The only thing left to remake now is Star Wars, 2001 and Blade Runner. Then watch......20 years from now they'll remake Return of the King! And the whole process will repeat itself over and over again for generations to come until the history of cinema becomes an unrecognizable swirl of monotony. Kinda like one of those time-loop hells that gets depicted every so often in genre stuff.

It is completly bullocks. Why remake one of the beste Sci-Fi movies ever made. It is an insult to the original. Nobody can do it better. And someone else as Ripley. Just shoot me. There is nobody else then Sigourney as Ripley.

By cyanide at 5:57 AM ON 05/28/09

Personaly i think the Alien franchise has been pretty much fulfilled by the AVP films and to do a remake would only tarnish a Golden oldie, After Aliens i dont think they had the punch to do better as the movie pioneered so many aspects of todays Movie Tech, great thrillers and sci fi, even action to remake this movie they better REINVENT THE WHEEL otherwise it will be as dissapointing as AVP 1&2 (they had so much potential but i think the writters imagination just was not worthy of such a great cult movie like Aliens and Predator) Hail Sigorny & Arny you cant replace em so respect em & not with cheesy spinoffs or remakes!!!
PS. Danny Glover was cool too :)

By Tomb at 5:59 AM ON 05/28/09

Nothing could be worse than what they did to Godzilla. A subtle and passionate denunciation of nuclear weapons and nuclear testing, made in fictional form to circumvent the censorship of the US military occupation of Japan, got reduced to a mindless killfest.

By gorehound696 at 7:50 AM ON 05/28/09

This is what i have beeen calling YARM (yet another remake).
I advise all of you instead of complaining to do something about these YARM.I know it is hard to fight a big beast like Hollywood but if enough do it it will hurt them.
1.BOYCOTT All YARM
2.Send a letter to the offending studio
3.Boycott offending studio
I am on a personal boycott of FOX and have no intention of buying anything from them until at least next May.I even sent them a nasty letter on the cancelling of T:SCC.
Fight Back and Screw these greedy unoriginal assholes by hitting them in the wallet which is the only thing they ever understand.

By Dazzler at 8:07 AM ON 05/28/09

What are they thinking, Alien is a classic that will only suffer by being rebooted...This isn't Star Trek for heaven's sake...it's not like you can introduce a younger Ripley and send her to battle a different Alien species and make it anywhere near as brilliant as the original...Please give us something new...

By a different tim at 8:22 AM ON 05/28/09

There are some movie that should never be re-made. This is one of them! Let's have originality back!!!

By jdmimic at 8:30 AM ON 05/28/09

Sheesh. Egads. Ok, Gorehound, you win. I'm starting to agree with you. Can't we go a single week without hearing about another stupid remake? Seriously, have these people never heard of a library? There are millions of original stories out there (well, "original" is stretching it, but you get my point), but they insist on remaking the same movies over and over again? They already have a good set of movies (mostly), there is plenty of room for them to continue and expand the storylines, there is absolutely no need to remake the same bloody movie.

and Scifi? Why can't you bloody fix your $&% Captcha?

By Walt at 8:33 AM ON 05/28/09

Just so long as he doesn't cast Rose McGowan

By Pauul at 8:54 AM ON 05/28/09

What the hell are they thinking? There is absolutely no point in rebooting the franchise. Alien is still as up to date as it ever was. It's stood up to the test of time. A reboot could never be as good and would be completely unnecessary. I've nothing against reboots, in fact I usually enjoy them, but rebooting Alien is a retarded idea.

By PJAvenger at 9:07 AM ON 05/28/09

Wasn't this movie already remade as Alien Booty Call starring Traci Lords?

Really, why can't you go re-make some awful movie like Citizen Kane or Gone With The Wind? Spice them up with some CGI. That's the ticket.

By lookn_4_stars at 9:21 AM ON 05/28/09

There are only 2 movies in my lifetime that have actually made me jump out of my seat, the original Jaws & Alien. Some of the sequels (of Alien) were entertaining and fun to watch, but none had the visceral impact of the original. It also had the coolest looking creature of all time. The remake will undoubtedly be a far less intelligent, prettied-up PG-13 (for their teenage target audience) version with alot more gore and alot less suspense. The alien will be cheesier too. Hooray 4 Hollywood!!!

Proves my thinking that Dark Horse wasn't acting on a whim when it announced it was rebooting or returning to its Aliens and Predator licenses. 20th Century is interested in doing the franchise, maybe by bringing in Scott, they're trying to do it "right" somehow.

PJAvenger, Citizen Kane would have to be dotcommer or Bill Gates type. You know, a film like that could be done... not saying it should, but I think the scope of the movie and its arc is translatable to the present.

I don't know if this has to be a "reboot". I mean the number of humans in the universe who know about the aliens is pretty limited (even in the first film it's suggested a cabal within the Company knew what was on that planet). What I'm saying is that you can reintroduce the franchise to a new audience who's inexplicably never come across the original films before, but can be done in a way that doesn't necessarily negate or cancel out the prior films.

It may well closely resemble the first film (lone alien terrorizes a civilian space crew), but I can see the movie doing just fine on its own while also not overtly "canceling out" the other films.

By Jo at 10:05 AM ON 05/28/09

The original Alien ,movie is a classic and still a great movie to watch. I liked it's slower pace suspense approach. I can't imagine how they could improve upon it. I can only imagine them ruining it with more gore.

What is with the focus on remakes? Has the movie industry lost it's imagination? I'm not totally against remakes (I love the new Star Trek), I just wish they would look at more original options. There are numerous sci-fi books that could be adapted to a movie. For example, the Honor Harrington books written by David Weber.

By xxgatorxx at 10:11 AM ON 05/28/09

By Spacecowboy at 11:09 AM ON 05/28/09

Like all thing Hollywood these days RoBoot is the word. Star Trek, Friday the 13th, Halloween, and now Preditor and Aliens. I ove all the originals. To ne totally honest the movies Jaws it was the music that scared you for the shark did not work well in salt water. In aliens it was jonesy the cat that scared you. The cat would jump out at you then the alien would attack. Hollywood need new writer with new Ideas now.

By dreamdzign at 11:31 AM ON 05/28/09

OK, I'm more of a live and let live kind of guy. I'm 36 years old. I grew up when all the greats were coming out, and had the kind of family that didn't allow me to see them. In my mid-teens I finally did get a sneak and started to watch some of these wonderful films like Alien and Aliens (A3 sucked, sorry), and The Thing, Outland (with Sean Connery) the original Star Wars movies, Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, Red Sonja, Total Recall, etc.

Yes, there is a certain "cheesy" factor to the effects and some would even say the acting. But these were GREAT films and I cherish them.

Modern day remakes like The Day the Earth Stood Still, and even others like The Women...are great too, because for what they stand for, for me. I love the originals better, but it's just plain FUN to go to the remakes and see what they do with it. And to me, the EXPERIENCE the movie invokes is worth the $6 early bird special I pay for. It will never destroy the essence of the original for me.

I will always have what I grew up on, those are in my memory, and a part of what I know. A remake isn't going to remake me. I'm smart enough and world-conscious enough to realize that there are billions more alive with this next generation of movie-goers who don't care about the films we grew up with. So let them have the remakes.

What I tend to notice for remakes however, is that while they have great special effects, the gore factor is indeed increased a great deal, and much more realistic than we grew up with. I very often turn away now at the amount of realistic gore shown in movies these days. What I LOVED about the originals were that they could scare you, capture you, and make your heart beat fast without having to wow you with a ton of gore.

And my final two-cents...would someone PLEASE make the Sword of Shannara series into a series of movies!! And whoever they get to do it, make sure it's at the level and caliber of the Lord of the Rings movies.

In Hollywood, No One Can Hear Fans Scream...

By Louis42 at 11:52 AM ON 05/28/09

Ok so when I heard there was going to be a new Predator movie I was pretty stoked, I love the originals, even read the books as a kid and think that the Predator universe is an amazing place to explore. I am really hoping for a continuation of the originals and not a complete overhaul because quite frankly that is not needed and will only do a disservice to the franchise. The source material is amazing, so lets just come up with a unique storyline (or one from one of the books that many people have not been exposed to) and create an awesome new movie.
Now news of a new Alien movie… my initial thought AWESOME! A reboot of the original with Ripley…not so much. Alien was one of the first sci fi movies I ever saw and got me hooked on the genre. The Alien trilogy is amazing sc fi/horror and even Resurrection was a solid continuation of the series. Again, why can we just get a solid Alien movie, that maybe acknowledges the past movies but doesn’t have to, that has a unique storyline and doesn’t try to erase the past just to make it relevant to new audiences? What would be amazing would be to create a new character that new audiences can fall in love with, like Ripley, and create a trilogy/new mythology around her. There are tones of pretty good Alien books(and a few really dismal ones) from which to craft a solid movie. And in the Alien universe there is plenty of room for a continuation of the Alien saga without rewriting the past. I’m all for reinventing an established series and adding onto its mythology for new audiences but for heaven’s sake please do not reinvent beloved characters. Hell, if you have to, just change Ripley’s name to something different, drop in a quick reference to the Nostromo, and there you go a new movie. I won’t be particularly happy if is a prettier version of the original but at least you are respecting the source material.

I tell you if they try and remake 'Aliens' I'll shoot myself.

By Photoboy at 12:19 PM ON 05/28/09

Great idea Ridley! Your remake of The Andromeda Strain turned out really well, so I think this has to be a really good idea!!!

By vince7 at 12:24 PM ON 05/28/09

Has Hollywood run out of ideas? Giving movie clasics to hacks so they can remake them is a sad joke.

By Alex D at 1:25 PM ON 05/28/09

How about something new from Hollywood? There's lots of great sci-fi books, comics, even something like the online graphic novel Pyramids of Mars, would be be better. Enough with the reboots and remakes!

By batch at 2:13 PM ON 05/28/09

Frak Fox.

By Dave at 2:15 PM ON 05/28/09

I guess I dont understand why people complain when they hear about a "remake" or "reboot" being done. Like it means we have to give up the original now because they are doing a reboot. I like the fact that Hollywood does this, sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt but the one thing it will never do is take away from the original good or bad. New Star Trek, I loved it, but it still really wasn't the Kirk and Spock I grew up around but so what, it was still a great movie and I am glad it was done. I would like to see Alien redone, doesn't mean that my original now is expired and I can never enjoy it again it just means there is another Alien movie being made and with today's special effects compared to when the original came out I think they could do a good job with it. If they dont and cheese it out with bad actors so what I got the original and it will always be the original.

By farscape29 at 2:18 PM ON 05/28/09

Ugh...I agree with the overall sentiment. Please for the love of God, stop with the remakes. Admittedly, there have been successful and good remakes/reboots. BSG, Star Trek spring to mind. But those are the exception, not the rule. There's a host of completely unneeded, unwanted and stupid remakes.
What it boils down to is that the studios don't want to pay for unique scripts or stories. These studios already own the rights to make them again if they want. They can manipulate the story/characters anyway they want to make it more demographically appealing to the leading demo of the time. Right now it seems to be Tween Suburban Girls (I blame that on Titanic).
So until Tween Suburban Girls stop going to the movies and stop watching TV, this is what we're going to get.
Classic movies should be left alone, tell a similar story in the same Universe, but don't re-do what's already been done. Just do a Colonial Marines movie. Do a movie about them finding the Aliens original home planet. Do a GOOD Aliens vs. Predator (so far both have sucked.)

Please Hollywood, Don't Drink and Greenlit....

By IsoTek at 2:28 PM ON 05/28/09

I understand that no one wants a remake but really what is the worst that can happen? The film will suck so bad no one will ever love the original? That never happens. The original will still be the favorite you remember even if they bring out a smashing new reboot to thrill and captivate the newbies, hell it may even bring more to the original and make them fans. I mean really, it's not like when a remake comes out they throw the original film away and you can't watch it again. Now.....
That said, I don't really think Alien, needs a reebot. I would prefer them to film one of the alternate scripts for one of the many sequels, like for instance William Gibson's take on Alien 3. That script kinda looked fun. Maybe consider making a tv show. Colonial Marines would so kick ass. But I digress, these Hollywood bigwigs are going to do what they want to make money. Hollywood is a business so expecting them to do anything for the sake of art is a bit naive. If you want artful new ideas, support independant film, make films yourself or better yet, stick to books.

By Greg L. at 2:45 PM ON 05/28/09

Why don't studios RE-RELEASE original films anymore? That would be fun.

By wellsdesigned at 3:00 PM ON 05/28/09

By Icon at 3:20 PM ON 05/28/09

I will not pay to see this.

So much good material out there unmade and I can see remaking a mediocre movie but not a great movie like ALIEN

By Bulun at 3:41 PM ON 05/28/09

I think it is all our own bloody faults. Most of us complain about reboots, yet we go to see them anyway (excluding those that stick to their guns). If we keep paying to see them, production companies are going to continue to make them. Remaking Alien? That's complete and total crap, that movie is perfect and defined/or re-defined the sci-fi genre. To remake it is blasphemy and an insult to Ridley Scott! I have tended to go an see remakes, but this one I will not support in any way shape or form!!! BOYCOTT REMAKES!!!!!

By stealthgear at 3:45 PM ON 05/28/09

I know this won't be popular, but they should remake Alien 3 in its entirety from the original script (Wooden planet with monks). Why not throw in Predators & Robocop and a space battle while their at it.

By stealthgear at 4:41 PM ON 05/28/09

PLEASE MAKE ALIEN 5.
Sigourney Weaver is still alive. I'd prefer a new story with an older Ripley character in it than a reboot.

By blackwolf at 5:00 PM ON 05/28/09

I agree with stealthgear I would rather see alien 5 than a remake of the orignal the same with predator i would rather see a new movie

By ecgordon at 5:39 PM ON 05/28/09

By Jose at 6:01 PM ON 05/28/09

Why don't they try something different, something no one has done before in any franchise like finish it!! for good!!!! Instead of re-doing a masterpiece. Nuke all those nasty aliens and destroy them for good!!! Of course you can always do an encore jajaja]
The only 2 movies or series I wolud re do would be Space 1999, they could have used better stories, and 2001 space odyssey, just make it a little easier to understand this time around.

By DynaMike at 6:21 PM ON 05/28/09

OH COME ON.

Enough already! I know reboots are in vogue lately, but there's absolutely NO REASON why someone can't write an all-new story with all-new characters within the existing Alien mythos! For frak's sake, it can literally be set anywhere in the galaxy at any point in time! Even as far back as prehistoric times, what with that prehistoric temple in Alien vs Predator.

Just pick a location: ship, planet, moon, city, whatever. Pick a time, any time. Fill that place and time with a handful of believable characters - characters that don't necessarily have to be Ripley. IT'S NOT THAT HARD.

By jose at 7:39 PM ON 05/28/09

I totally agree with DynaMike please don't replace Ripley, that's my problem with Star Trek, now there are 2 Kirks 2 Spocks etc. There are a million things they can do with Aliens just one thing, please no more Aliens vs Predator movies, they felt so cheap, it was like watching a bad monsters movie from the eighties. in fact let's start a campaign, DO NOT REPLACE RIPLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Jose at 7:44 PM ON 05/28/09

Ohh one last thing God forbid they Re-boot Indiana Jones, I would much rather see an ancient Harrison Ford cracking the whip than maybe Brad Pitt wearing a fedora!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By zzbickyzz at 7:50 PM ON 05/28/09

OMG not another remake, please leave this original masterpiece alone!
What else is Hollywood contemplating to ruin by way of remake?

By Bizz at 9:15 PM ON 05/28/09

It's actually very simple...less risk, lower cost, easier to do and
the "new" generation never saw the original. Hollywood is all
about making money, like any other business. As for the "art"
part, that was lost long ago...

By opantoja at 9:17 PM ON 05/28/09

Why do a remake of when a prequel will do just fine as well as offer many new opportunities to expand on the Alien universe in many unique ways.

The company was not only aware of the derelict on LV426 it was aware of the nature of the cargo as well. Had there been a previous attempt by humans to harvest this species and was that the cause of the Alien craft’s crash.

What about the other Aliens as represented by the dead space jockey, how did it/they die and what’s their story. If you look closely at the eggs in the other rows of the alien cargo bay they are all overturned and empty. Obviously the crap hit the fan on that ship and with today’s CGI you could easily expand the on the horrific hell-like terrain of LV426, and the derelict as well as make convincing looking aliens from the space jockey’s species, and since it was already established that the space jockey seemed to be growing out of it’s chair you could make them all different shapes depending on their role.

Anything but a remake of the only Sci-fi / horror film that is EFFECTIVELY both Freudian and Jungian.

By MakeAlien5 at 11:13 PM ON 05/28/09

first.

Reboot NOT EQUAL Remake. (see Star Trek)

however... for gods sakes FOX. Your have to be the most think skulled A-Holes I've ever seen.

how hard is this?

james cameron or Ridly Scott + Alien 5 = good movie.

anyone else hoping to god for more Space Jockey too?

that has got to be one of the coolest characters to never get good screen time

By FilmNut at 11:45 PM ON 05/28/09

Oh. My. God. This is one of my most coveted films of all time. I grew up reading the Dark Horse graphic novels, the books... granted the series took a left turn after the studio screwed Fincher over on Alien 3, but seriouly with all the materal that Dark Horse has, you mean to tell me there is nothing to make a feature film out of, so you're going to forget the last 30 years of Alien ever existed and remake it. How can they top H.R. Gigers alien design? I mean the only Dark Horse series that I would of liked to see made into a film was Aliens: Hive and even the book Aliens: Tribes had a nod to the original. Please, please tell me that this information is bogus. If it's not, then I say it's time the fans banned together like the Trekies and raise holy hell on FOX.

By Scifi Reader at 12:39 AM ON 05/29/09

Like everyone here I wish they would come up with new ideas. Heck, there are so many good science fiction books out there ready to be made into films.

If they must reboot something, then go farther back so the change makes sense. Plus, pick a movie that you could improve on, story-wise and with the effects.

Next thing you know they'll reboot Star Wars... oh wait, Lucas kinda already did that a few times...

By whatthewhat at 3:12 AM ON 05/29/09

obviously were out of good ideas in hollywood i hear they might make another ghostbusters...theyre making a live action thundercats and a new he-man movie. I mean WTF enough already someone do something original please! comic book ripoffs and remakes can only get you so far hollywood..

By UnRiel at 10:41 AM ON 05/29/09

Neither movie needs to be remade. The Arnold Predator original stands alone. They should simply choose a different jungle, a different set of post-Iraq War special forces, different character names and voila a new story that stands beside the original.

And who says that Ripley's crew were the only one to discover a settlement ruined by Aliens. The Company clearly only shares need to know with its crews. Reboot with a whole different crew.

By Captain Jack Harkness at 12:31 PM ON 05/29/09

To quote Ripley, the original one and only accept no substitutes Ripley, "Did IQs just drop sharply while I was away?"

Not only NO to your reboot FOX but HELL NO!!!

By stingo2001 at 3:32 PM ON 05/29/09

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! What the F*** are they thinking!????????? Alien 5 - yes, yes, yes providing it has a director/writers with genuine vision but a remake of Alien - sacrilege! There is so much unfilmed but filmable SF out there....why bother with a remake of such a recent classic. Yet more evidence of a lack of imagination and guts in Hollywood. Ridley Scott should sue!

Coming to cinema near you soon:
2001 A Space Odyssey (by Michael Bay)
The Godfather 1 & 2 (starring James Gandolphini as 'Da Don')
Apocalypse Now (starring Charlie Sheen)
Indiana Jones And The Raiders Of The Lost Ark (this time actually starring Tom Selleck since he's got some time to spare),
Taxi Driver (the musical, starring Zach Ephron & 'his girls')
Blade Runner (also starring Tom Selleck)

Should I go on?

By scifi-ED at 5:21 PM ON 05/29/09

nickyp I'll continue for you...

Back to the future

Die Hard

Jurrasic Park

Dirty Harry

Casablanca

Full metal Jacket

I wish Hollywood would use common since. Somethings deserve and need remakes. But you don't touch classics that the majority of people deem as a perfect movie.
