McG comes clean, reveals the Terminator Salvation end you won't see
McG, who directed Terminator Salvation, told a group of reporters that he did change the film's original ending to a more hopeful conclusion. (Spoilers ahead!)
Leaks and early reports suggested the film could end with John Connor's somehow becoming a combination of man and machine. In a group interview on Friday in Beverly Hills, Calif., McG revealed that Connor's original outcome was even more dire.
"There was this leak that Connor dies and they put Connor's face on top of the machine body of [half-man, half-machine] Marcus [Sam Worthington]," McG said. "Everybody went, 'Booo! What's that?' That's half of it. We had a jet-black ending. Connor dies, we're in a room with all the people we care about. You take Connor's likeness, you put it on the living machine of Marcus. He sits up now looking like Christian Bale, takes a gun, kills Kate, kills Kyle, kills Star, kills everybody, eyes flare red, the end."
That ending was so bleak that it may not even appear as a DVD extra. "I haven't decided," he said. "Just take a deep breath. Imagine that's the ending. I would hope the oxygen would just go right out. You'd be like, 'They can't do [that]. That was the biggest bummer I've ever seen in my life.'"
Screenwriter Michael Ferris added that the filmmakers toyed with different versions of the dark ending before settling on something more hopeful. "There was an ending of intermediate darkness in which the transition to the mechanical Marcus takes over as Connor and goes on to lead the resistance," Ferris said during the same interview. "It's essentially a secret to everybody except the inner circle that John Connor is now a robot, is now a Terminator. We're going for some irony there."
The revelations appear to confirm the early leaked reports and also put the lie to McG's denials that the leaked endings were accurate. Terminator Salvation opens May 22.

Gotta agree with you on that one. they came up with some interesting, but truly awful endings. These endings actually make me less inclined to rush out and see the movie..

A friend told me about that ending and I just couldn't wrap my mind around it. I simply turned to him and said "That's so stupid!" I get the irony thing, but this was just silly. We spend all the time caring about John Connor, and now they are making him a machine. Stupid.

Making John Connor a robot is just as fraking stupid as killing Hicks and Newt at the beginning of Aliens 3. What a stupid freaking idea. McG if you do this, you will lose all credibility as a storyteller.

But thats not what theyre goin for anymore. I hope they dont keep that in anyway, I mean if they want to make Connor part machine with some enhancements or experiments then maybe, but not kill the guy. But we know they defintely changed it all.

Although it is a stupid idea (how is John Conner going to win the war if he himself is a robot, if that is the case they never needed to send a terminator after him) I would like to see it as an extra on the dvd.

Wow, that is just horrible. I had a suspicion it was true, but on the other hand, I just couldn't believe anyone would be that stupid, you know?
They had better not do anything like this, but I agree with jdmimic: I was actually really looking forward to seeing this movie, but this really kind of kills some of my enthusiasim. Really, why would I want to see a movie made by people who could actually seriously conceive of such a horrible and STUPID ending? They even went so far as to FILM it!
Way to kill my anticipation, McG.

I see the Newt and Hicks kill off parallels but this is more like Ripley being an alien hybrid in alien resurrection. I'd say it's interesting, and for some reason the tone reminds me of Sarah Connor Chronicles, can't say why though. Just does.

For all those people who did not understand the Matrix, then you were not paying attention. The glitch in the Matrix was a loop. For all those people out there who no nothing of computers, that would not make any sense to you. For those that do understand computers, you should have gotten that. The same thing will continually happen over and over again.

Well...if they do that...it will be kinda hard to make the next tow movies. This is supposed to be the first of three in the adult John Connor era of the Terminator universe.

Lets see how many movies do they have where its all about the machines, lets see terminator, transformers......hmmm yea its not like hollywood rolls out a couple of movies every year about machines.
I robot was a finiacial success but you dont see anybody making sequels to that, and to be honest I cant think of anymore movies about robots, cyborgs, or whatever as the main theme that has been in the movies for the last few years. I mean all we get are low budget direct to dvd that are horrible. BSG is gone but that was good to have on TV. Caprica is more about sex and robots and human politics.
So yea im sorry if you got the money to put out any other mnovie or story about war with machines then please do something about it. Otherwise who cares if its rated R or not. Ive seen enough war movies to get the point of how brutal it can be. Im sure all the brutality will be with the machines, and since machines dont have human organs flying out after they blow up the MPAA wont give an R rating.
Try looking at the bright side, transformers will be a hit, if terminator is a hit, they could make more movies that could get it right for you. Then you'll have a brutal R rated war against machines.
But for right now theres only one franschise that all about that, and thats Terminator. We need something new and maybe we'll get something should the movie be a success. Transformers will be cool but it wont give you the blood and guts you want. So yea im crossing my fingers, hoping that this movie will make it easier to create new franschises with war against machines. Or maybe just a war machine movie without any people in it.

In fact, if they were really clever with the way they handled it, u could leave some doubt whether it had been a dream or if he really had been changed into a machine. It might actually work that way.

That would be stupid ending and be the end of it with no sequels. No one would see the sequels if everyone was dead. What terminators vs terminators? Makes no sense.

well personally these are all rumors, i went and saw the movie and none of these are the correct ending, bitching about something that hasn't happend yet is pointless. and to say your not goin to see it because of a rumon about the ending, thats asinine. how bout we grow up and get a life, besides watching the rumor forums about possible endings. go out, see the movie, enjoy it if you liked it, if you didnt, then gripe, but dont speculate.

John Connor dies and has his face plastered on Marcus?? WTF?? Thank God that ending was scrubbed, or else I would have never watched the movie four times and bought the DVD.
