The French HDvision Web site has scored what appear to be concept art images from James Cameron's upcoming top-secret sci-fi epic Avatar. More after the jump.
MarketSaw apparently confirmed with Fox that the art is genuine.
The one image shows the Power Suit (reminiscent of the Power Lifter from Cameron's Aliens) that is used on an alien world. The other is some kind of aircraft. It's not clear whether these images represent final concepts or early designs.
The 3-D Avatar centers on ex-marine Jake Sully (Terminator Salvation's Sam Worthington), who is torn between duty and honor when he finds himself caught in a battle between the heavily armed forces of Earth's most powerful star-faring consortium and an exotic, noble alien race whose entire world is threatened by the human invaders.
Avatar also stars Star Trek's Zoe Saldana and Cameron's Aliens star Sigourney Weaver. It opens Dec. 18.

One could have said this was concept art for a Miyazaki movie, and I'd have believed it.
Looks suspiciously like "Castle in the Sky"

Wasn't that the plot of the movie Battle for Terra?

"Wasn't that the plot of the movie Battle for Terra?"
cameron has been known to "borrow" story ideas from writers.

I have to admit that I was skeptical about this film until seeing the look of this concept art... if this is representative of the artistic direction of this film, it should be fascinating to look at, if nothing else.

Cameron's been working on this project for close to a decade. Battle for Terra is likely a ripoff of Cameron's project.... or not... a plot like this is not particularly unique.

Good for Cameron... we need a good scifi space action flick. Most other producers don't want to take on the budget let alone produce something interesting.

Wait, what? "Finds himself caught in a battle between the heavily armed forces of Earth's most powerful star-faring consortium and an exotic, noble alien race whose entire world is threatened by the human invaders"? That was the plot of an amazingly vivid and grotesque strip in 2000AD comic which would have made a fabulously weird movie. Too bad we'll probably end up with the usual halfbaked scifi cliches instead :(

unbelievable. Guys, Cameron wrote this story over 10 flipping years ago. People have been stealing HIS idea. The movie is gonna be great! Cameron has the midas touch!

There are only so many plots out there, really. Fish out of water, invasion, boy meets girl...
To me, this sounds like Dancing with Wolves, the Last Samurai or any other movie where a battle weary soldier goes native with the noble locals. That doesn't mean that the movie will suck or that Cameron is a hack.
Looking forward to seeing more about it.

@meisner
"There are only so many plots out there, really", when all of the movies that you watch are essentially simplistic moral tales directed by old white men.

"simplistic moral tales directed by old white men."
Now who's being simplistic? And racist.

But Cameron's tales are pretty simplistic.
That said, watching T2 a week ago, I was reminded that he's miles above and more complex than the present group of blockbuster directors like Bay, Abrams, and McG. So, I'll gladly see this, even if I also rented "Abyss" that weekend and was totally bored.
