Trekkie-in-chief President Barack Obama reportedly wants to beam a special screening of Star Trek into the White House, POLITICO reported, citing several anonymous sources.
Various media outlets have speculated on whether Obama is a fan of the sci-fi series. A headline in Salon said that "Obama Is Spock: It's Quite Logical." Newsweek reported that "Spock's cool, analytical nature feels more fascinating and topical than ever now that we've put a sort of Vulcan in the White House," POLITICO reported.
For his part, Leonard Nimoy, who plays Spock Prime in the new movie, said that he's met Obama and recognized something in him. "I've met him twice," Nimoy told the site. "The first time was a couple years ago, very early on, when he had just announced his candidacy. He was in Los Angeles, speaking at a luncheon we were invited to. ... We were standing on the back patio, waiting for him. And he came through the house, saw me and immediately put his hand up in the Vulcan gesture."
During a campaign stop in 2008, Obama told a Wyoming crowd: "I grew up on Star Trek," adding: "I believe in the final frontier."

I wonder how much THAT'S going to cost us...

TC Games,
Studios have always screened movies for presidents. In the old days, the studios would provide reels. Not that we're in the 21st Century, they use something else: There are these things called DVDs. They make it really easy for people to watch films. You might want to try them one day. These DVDs are shiny discs.
:-P

Bart, I think it would be hilarious if the studio gave the White House a version coded for Europe. To remind the White House of the gaff they made giving the PM of Great Briton a basket of DVDs coded only for North America...irony, catch it....

Well, from what I understand the US makes it rather difficult to get a hold of a region free players, while all of my UK friends have region free dvd players that are available in every shop. Same is true for most of Europe in my experience. It would have been much more of a gaff had the PM given the Obamas a basket of region 2 dvds than the other way around :P

Obama has the vision for the future. I was at the screening of star trek at the kennedy space center. the room was filled with nasa employees wearing trekie costumes. Beats nixon watching patton.

@TC...Don't know but your don't worry, I'm sure we'll get another stimulus check for it.
@Bart....I got ya!
@Disco....We can get region free players here too Disco. We may not be able to walk into a local Best Buy and buy one off the shelves but It's no more difficult that ordering one off a website so don't believe everything you hear. Besides, what is not to say the White House hasn't been given one years ago. Tech companies also give presidents gifts on occasion.
@iscifir...Yeah, he has the vision alright. Where was that vision when he allowed the president's plane to be used in a panic inducing photo shoot over New York. Bet he wished he saw the future that day.
Vulcan in the White House my ass. It be nice if Newsweek went back to honest journalism instead of this yellow screed type they foist upon the masses now. Salon, please, that's a waste anyway.

There is a movie theater in the White House. It was built years ago, don't know when; just long ago (probably in the 50's or 60's).
There is also a bowling alley there too!!!

I think it is cool that we have a Prez that knows the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars.
The photo op with AF1 might have been a goof, but I bet it has been done before, after 9/11 and actually the pics looked pretty good. Still I doubt the Prez was even told it was on the schedule.
