BBC America announced that it will air five Doctor Who specials, including the final four adventures featuring David Tennant as the Doctor, starting in July with "Planet of the Dead."
As part of the same deal, BBC America acquired the 2008 Christmas Special, "The Next Doctor," featuring David Morrissey and Dervla Kirwan. It will air June 27.
In "Planet of the Dead," a London red bus takes a detour to an alien world, forcing the Doctor (Tennant) to work with the extraordinary Lady Christina (Michelle Ryan). But the mysterious planet holds terrifying secrets hidden in the sand and time is running out as the deadly Swarm gets closer.
"Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars" is the second special; it and two as-yet untitled specials will premiere later in 2009 and early 2010.
Doctor Who is part of BBC America's sci-fi-heavy summer, which also includes the urban fantasy series Being Human, starting July 25, and Survivors, which follows the last members of the human race after a deadly virus has wiped out 99 percent of the population.

Thank you. finally America or at least this American has been waiting months for the air dates. Now what about The Sara Jane Adventures? In Sept. David Tennant will be on SJA as the Doctor on a two parter in the UK.

Yes, good news, but the question still remains when will SyFy be airing it?
By Kevin at 2:55 AM ON 05/28/09
Too bad BBCA is standard def, which on DirecTV means "unwatchable" since they compress the bejeezus out of SD.
By Diane at 3:54 AM ON 05/28/09
I was hoping that you''d be showing Dr Who. I don't have BBCA
By Pete C at 5:10 AM ON 05/28/09
@Kevin: There's not much point in making BBCA HD, as the majority of the programmes they show are SD. Of those listed in the article, only the latest Dr Who, Planet of the Dead, has been filmed in HD. And very good it looked too on BBC HD!

Yes, Bout time!
By ZenoP at 7:00 AM ON 05/28/09
Actually, BBC America has been touting BBCA HD for a while now (see the link). The previous seasons of Torchwood were shown on HD.NET, which I'm going to miss because they were uncut and commercial free...

See Sci-fi, you dropped the ball again, congrats. At least we'll finally get to see the eps accordingly. This gives you more money to produce craptastic made in eastern europe "movies" of the week...

Glad you peeps in America will get to watch this years Doctor Who Specials. "The Next Doctor" was especially good.
But FYI this is NOT Doctor Who Season 5. Firstly, we don't have Season's in the UK. They're called Series. And Series 5 wont begin until 2010 and will feature the eleventh Doctor. This years Specials are still technically part of Series 4.
By Pauul at 9:14 AM ON 05/28/09
Ooh. And you're getting 'Survivors' too. Another excellent series. Not quite up there with 'Being Human' and 'Doctor Who' but it is still very good. Well worth you tuning in for.
By thekatwoman at 9:24 AM ON 05/28/09
I have DirecTV and I don't have any trouble with HD. DOCTOR DOCTOR DOCTOR!!!!!!
Dear UK people, will you please tell us (U.S.)
honestly if Matt Smith sucks. I so don't want David T to leave.
By greg at 9:42 AM ON 05/28/09
Ouch! Do you know if there are any plans to air the show on SyFy eventually. Our basic cable package doesn't include BBCA.
By EscRtist at 9:44 AM ON 05/28/09
That totally sucks it only airing on BBCA and not SciFi. BBC you really suck you simple minded git!
By cinebiz at 10:11 AM ON 05/28/09
I for one am thrilled that BBC America has taken control of Doctor Who. Sci Fi has a history of really BAD scheduling. The fact that none of the specials have air on sci-fi is a disgrace. You are the same folks that ruined Farscape with bad scheduling.
By Kyle Nin at 10:18 AM ON 05/28/09
Just to be clear, these specials aren't the fifth season. Season 5 won't start until next year, after which the Doctor regenerates.
But this is all great news. Over the past six months I've been pulling my hair out, trying to figure out if any of these specials will be shown in the US. I'm now relieved to know that they are.
greg: "Our basic cable package doesn't include BBCA."
Our basic cable package doesn't include EITHER BBC America OR The Sci-Fi Channel. We had to upgrade to get both.
By greg at 10:31 AM ON 05/28/09
My sympathies, Kyle. I've thought about upgrading for BBCA, but it's just not economically feasible. We'd have to pay for ten worthless channels we'd never watch just to get BBCA.
Thank god the basic package includes SyFy.

The waters of Mars doesnt air in the u.k till November and the 2-part christmas special which are Tennants last episodes will air on BBC1 christmas day and then new years day. Great news though that Tennant is doing a 2-part sarah jane adventures in sep..so i guess it's another 2 bonus episodes your getting of doctor who really. i guess Russell T Davies thought they'd utilise his services as much as they could whilst he was filming the specials. There was a rumour that Davies had persuaded Tennant to do 1 extra special to slot in directly before matt smith takes over. The extra ep would probably serve as the xmas special as the 2 part finale would have to be shown before the next series..we'll see i guess!

The David Tennant appearances on Sarah Jane Adventures are in season 3, which will start to air in the UK in Sept. No telling when they will air in the US, since season 2 hasn't aired here yet. We are way behind.
By Baff at 1:13 PM ON 05/28/09
For those without BBCA, it may very well show on SyFy at a later date. Their announcement was that from now on it would show on BBCA first. In previous seasons, it showed on BBCA a few months after SyFy.
By Jake Lockley at 3:41 PM ON 05/28/09
Who cares? I watched them the night they aired by downloading them off the internet.
By PixelbackWriter at 5:58 PM ON 05/28/09
Don't forget about Primeval Series 3, which has started airing on BBCA on Saturdays. I, too, am glad that BBCA has stepped up for Doctor Who. It would be great if at some point they were showing the series simultaneously, or at least with a few weeks lead, like they are with this current series of Primeval. Oh, can't wait to check out Survivors, too.

Doctor Who isn't listed on the BBC America online Schedule for June 27.
By Joe B. at 1:18 AM ON 05/29/09
Lovely!!! I don't get BBC America...guess Sci-Fi spent all their money changing their name to SyFy (one of the worst decisions of the century) so they couldn't afford to bid on it....good going guys!!!
By craigsf38 at 6:03 AM ON 05/29/09
I want to know if anyone is going to show the other holiday specials like "Time Crash" ?
By huchster at 1:27 AM ON 05/30/09
I don't have cable or satellite. I have been getting what I can off the internet (unemployed). Can anybody tell me what websites that I can go to to watch Primeval, Torchwood, Dr. Who, Robin hood and any other great BBC Series? Thanks for any help.

Live up to your slogan.
By kmw at 4:59 PM ON 08/06/09
If you don't get BBCA, there are other options. These eps have been available on iTunes as soon as they aired on BBCA, they were also available on DVD thru Netflix.
By scQue814 at 2:59 AM ON 11/17/09
This entire business of delaying broadcast in different regions is total bullocks! What's the point, other than making one country feel superior to another? The same goes with blocking material on the BBC's website. Just allow it all to air simultaneously. What pleasure you corporate heads must get out of stringing everyone along like this!
By nobu at 10:24 AM ON 12/04/09
screw waiting, just go to ninjavideo and watch it online

Simply move to Iowa. Iowa public TV airs all the old classic Doctor Who in sequence and also the new Doctor Who. I just wait for the seasons to catch up and tape them. I have every episode from the very first episode and have purchased the cutting floor missing episodes on the internet. I'm just patiently waiting for series 5.
