The British UFO TV series is headed for the big screen

The British \<i\>UFO\<\/i\> TV series is headed for the big screen

Robert Evans is teaming with ITV Global on a feature film based on the 1970s British TV series UFO, Variety reported.

Evans is producing with Avi Haas and Henri M. Kessler. Ryan Gaudet and Joseph Kanarek are penning a script.

The series debuted in 1970, with characters created by Gerry Anderson. It was set in 1980 and revolves around Shado (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization), a covert military organization that thwarts an alien race that has been kidnapping and killing humans for decades, then using the body parts.

Shado headquarters is hidden beneath a film studio, and the studio mogul is actually the Shado commander. The movie will be set in the year 2020.

That's great news. I eagerly await the news that a new version of Space1999 is on the way.

It really does seem as if nobody can have an original idea anymore.

By david3uk at 6:39 AM ON 05/21/09

well.well.well. i bet it all turn out very P.C. shame...but there did and still (i hope ) have a woman in chager of moonbase good luck to them

By goddogx at 6:44 AM ON 05/21/09

i hope those "futuristic" hairdos expand their color range!

By chris von danger at 7:40 AM ON 05/21/09

Ah yes, UFO, where the women had groovy purple wigs and the men wore nehru suits w/ bell bottoms on earth, in space or under the sea LOL. It'll be interesting if this is treated as camp or a serious"dark night"-style adaptation...

By gorehound696 at 7:43 AM ON 05/21/09

YARM !
i am sick of yet another remake.proves my point that no one can produce a really decent and original scifi.

i would much rather watch the original of this and will never watch the YARM

By Bundy at 8:15 AM ON 05/21/09

Here's yet another sci fi TV show that isn't shown on the Sci Fi channel anymore.

By wraithfodder42 at 8:46 AM ON 05/21/09

Ah...hmm... gotta admit, it's dismaying that the entertainment industsry has no sense of originality. Part of what made UFO fun was the 70s setting; the costuming, music, etc. and sorry, no one can do Ed Straker like Ed Bishop did.

The studios are just going to suck off the existing fanbase and go 'look, see what we've done!' instead of actually trying to create something original.

Sigh...

By StopConformity at 9:01 AM ON 05/21/09

Hey... I understand the frustration people feel toward all the remakes, but I have to ask, if you are so passionate about original programming, why don't you support it when it comes out? Besides that, you may want to look at the vast range of human storytelling across cultures and see that there is a limited range of stories people seem to pay attention to. It's no wonder within genres the same idea would emerge again and again: alien invasions, robots take over, time traveling drama, war between cultures, decaying civilization, bla, bla, bla.

By Marty B. at 9:05 AM ON 05/21/09

I always thought of UFO as an influence on the X-Com series of games (wasn't the British release of the game even called "UFO"?).

gorehound, do you actually type that boilerplate out every time you moan "YARM" or do you have a script or autotext insert at this point?

By OMAC at 11:35 AM ON 05/21/09

I am a fan of the original series, but for the movie to remain true to its heritage they will have to allow smoking on the Moonbase and Submarines.

And yes, purple wigs FTW!

Seriously though, I hope this gets the right treatment.

By Captain Calvin Grant at 12:34 PM ON 05/21/09

This is something that I can get behind without any fear of stepping on anyone's memorys and toes. It has everything one would want, sci fi, horror (alien body snatchers), and a topic of UFO's that is slowly getting to be main stream among many people of the world. Also, a straight foward good vs bad type of story. We are being invaded, some people are protecting us and keeping it a secret so a world wide panic would not happen. And for you costume and bell bottem haters of the show. It was the 70's. If it was 80's, the women would have big hair instead of purple. If it was 90's, it would be torn jeans and unwashed hair. Times go with the fashion it was filmed in and everything that was old always comes back 20 years later has new.

By wonnut at 12:48 PM ON 05/21/09

I hope they pick up where the show left off or take it further into the future.

By ummm....What ? at 1:04 PM ON 05/21/09

I don't see it, space 1999 perhaps better suited for revision, campy british scifi at it's best !
speaking of britich scifi, I do hope they get their collective heads out of of their "i-own-the-rights-no-i-do" bickering a****s and bring back Blakes 7, that'd rock

By Ste-UK at 1:10 PM ON 05/21/09

The show ran for ONE year, not three.

By scifire at 3:43 PM ON 05/21/09

I am happy about this. I enjoyed UFO. I also agree with Pete C. I eagerly await something for Space:1999.

By izmunuti at 4:05 PM ON 05/21/09

Fantastic! They REALLY need to keep a distinctive flavor for it to be any good and not cliche.

By Gixxerman001 at 4:28 PM ON 05/21/09

I loved UFO as a child, it was the best sci-fi on TV (besides Star Trek).

I though it had a fantastic set of stories (although the aliens using a cat was diverting off the path a little too much for my liking).

Unfortunately it's potential was never realised and the show was canned all too soon - although by all accounts we have Space 1999 as a consolation because of that (I like that too but not so much).

Here's hoping the movie happens and is as good as it could be.

By Uber Critic at 6:23 PM ON 05/21/09

Yes!!! Finally!!! I have been talking this up for years!!! What a cool show...one of the smartest series ever on television.

By Uber Critic at 6:27 PM ON 05/21/09

Please make Space:1999...next--Space:2099.

By IsoTek at 9:02 PM ON 05/21/09

I can dig it! Everytime I see some bubblegum goth chick out in the world with a high intensity colored hairstyle I think back to the days of U.F.O.. Sylvia may have been right afterall. Anywho, if we can have a Thunderbirds theatrical remake why the hell can't we have a U.F.O. theatrical feature. Damnit we need to keep these stories alive somehow and a simple re-issue of the originals might sate the appetites for a while but eventually its going to look too old and in need of some 21st century remodeling. I say go for it, bring it into the future and YARM detractors be damned!

By Shaun at 9:10 PM ON 05/21/09

"Please make Space:1999...next--Space:2099."

now that would be interesting. but perhaps instead of a base on the moon, it could be located on an asteroid...?

By Gill Avila at 10:11 PM ON 05/21/09

Wow! That would sorta be fun--play it straight, too. I still have a SHADO Mobile with the missile and one of those ugly-ass interceptors with that milk-bottle missile. Maybe SHADO's headquarters could be like SHIELD's helicarrier. That'd be cool!

By leofilm at 10:27 PM ON 05/21/09

space: 1999

By Scifi Reader at 1:14 AM ON 05/22/09

They should remake "Muppets from Space". Keeping the muppets but going for an R rating. Show blood, some sex and hard ethical choices to be made. Add some real edge to it!

LOL. Sorry, I just wanted to see how dumb I could be with this. I think I "did it". Ha, an R-rated muppet movie... (Admit it, you'd sooo go to it.)

;-)

By Invader at 6:30 PM ON 05/22/09

I hope they use some of the darker stuff from the series, like innocents sacrificed for the sake of the mission. I also hope they set the HQ on the moon, as I believed they planned for the unrealized second season. Silly idea, hiding it under a film studio.

By Adrian Sherlock at 9:30 AM ON 05/23/09

I wish them well with it. UFO has long been an obsession of mine. I wrote to Ed Bishop and with his feedback wrote a script about an older version of his UFO character which he was interested in playing. And while that project never came off, sadly, I went on to study screenwriting and would be very interested to be a part of this planned venture. I'm sure the screenwriters will be good people, but I feel UFO had particular qualities which made it what it was. The fact that Straker bottled up his personal feelings, rather than crying on someone's shoulder, the relentlessly tragic impact of the war on his private life, the implacable nature of the aliens, the fact that his choices were the heart of the stories. I hope these will remain intact.

By Cmdr Johnson at 8:21 AM ON 05/26/09

Actually with all the poo-pooing going on I think this all sounds reminiscent of when everybody heard a guy best known for "Queer as Folk" was going to reignite Doctor Who...everybody screamed YARM and other nonsense. The point is...give it a shot. I didn't like the original all that much but I will give this a fair shake. If it sucks, it will suck, if its great, nya on you! GO FOR IT!

By TDEngines at 8:39 PM ON 05/26/09

to Marty B.: you are right, X-Com was based on UFO. I seem to recall reading that some Microprose staff admitted during an interview and Microprose was sued by Gerry Anderson Productions.

By Col.Sammer at 10:53 AM ON 05/29/09

I would love to see a UFO movie filmed in the spirit of the original series. Perhaps the new Commander might be a relative of Ed Straker, and a shuttle pilot who is given the "Gaslight " treatment by SHADO and NASA to maintain security (very similar to"Exposed".

By Mars Needs Guitars at 1:25 PM ON 05/30/09

Bundy is right - SciFi needs to get back to classic sci-fi, and less "monster of the week" movie garbage!

By RealTRUTH at 7:30 PM ON 05/30/09

The Goverment will not let just anyone do a show on UFO's. The Goverment has to controll It! When Lost In Space was firs a Pilot the show was Great. But the Goverment Added Dr.Smith.When Star Treck was a Pilot there was no kerk. The Goverment turned what was based on True UfOligy In to Pure SOAP Bull

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 4:42 PM ON 06/06/09

RealTRUTH said "The Goverment will not let just anyone do a show on UFO's."

Which one? The planet is infested with governments.

By native65 at 12:22 PM ON 07/15/09

Remakes suck (most of the time) All I'm interested in is getting my hands on the CD box set that was released in Australia some years back. I find a single disk (pictured here) at some sites. That Box set is awesome! a lot of extras, ALL the episodes uncut and digitally remastered.

By RiaSHADO at 7:28 PM ON 07/25/09

First of all it must be a fully British production team. Gerry Anderson should have creative control, (minus puppets that is), and Sylvia Anderson should also be involved. Also lets not have the "overly fast paced" directoral sequences, al la video game style, as it takes away from the plot and character development.
Please don't "Americanize" it. Absolutely don't make it a comedy or dramady. A good international cast would be an excellent idea. Minus American actors that is. (and yes I am an American). I believe Brits are better trained actors. With that being said, I wouldn't mind seeing Collin Farrell (Ire.) playing the part of Colonel Foster; and Aaron Hesleshurst (Aus.) playing the part of Colonel Alec Freeman.
Please keep the awesome intro music and incidental music.
Don't make it into the lately typical "dark and low lit industrial sci-fi" style, as it is very annoying, and I think we're done with the Terminator and Alien styling.

By wvr3635 at 12:48 PM ON 09/02/09

I think they could pull it off. Make it less campy, more X-files. Men in black go around killing aliens and such.

By UFOfan13 at 1:24 PM ON 10/17/09

This was and remains my favorite science fiction TV series. The sets and models were beautifully crafted. The acting had gritty, abrasive characters with no concessions to sentimentality. The plots didn't try to ponder the meaning of it all and didn't preach to the audience. There were no deep messages (a la Star Trek). The plots were often downbeat and based in ordinary situations, just like real life. Ed Bishop gave a stellar performance as Ed Straker. You didn't mess with Ed Straker. I really hope the film keeps all these elements that made this series so outstanding. We don't need moody industrial sets (think of the alien ship on the new Star Trek movie). We need ordinary settings and let the underlying strangeness of it all seep through. I hope it keeps underlying serious tone and doesn't compromise because some studio executive thinks it will reach a wider demographic. If it's good people will watch it. Overall, I'm ready to buy a cinema ticket and watch it already.
