The CW schedule: 'Thursdays go Goth,' pairing Supernatural, Vampire

The CW schedule: \'Thursdays go Goth,\' pairing \<i\>Supernatural, Vampire\<\/i\>

The CW's hot new Twilight-tinged series The Vampire Diaries is kicking longtime resident Smallville off of Thursdays while pairing up with Supernatural, the network announced in the upfront presentation of its 2009-'10 schedule on Thursday. Meanwhile, the network canceled Reaper, as expected, though it's unclear whether the show will live on in first-run syndication.

"Thursdays go Goth" is one of The CW's new taglines. The Smallville/Supernatural pairing on Thursdays has been a staple on The CW for years, with the DC Comics-inspired Smallville doing fairly well and Supernatural building its ratings despite the worst competition on TV (it airs opposite Grey's Anatomy and CSI). Both shows had already gotten pickups from the network.

The strategic move to pair The Vampire Diaries with Supernatural aims at a younger-skewing audience by drawing in the teenage Twilight fangirls who are hungry for more vampire angst. Meanwhile, Smallville certainly can't hurt The CW on Fridays, and it will have a chance to play out its ninth and final season.

The Vampire Dairies centers on a teenage girl named Elena who falls for a new, handsome and mysterious student, Stefan, who turns out to be a vampire. Unfortunately, Stefan, a good vampire, has a brother named Damon, who's not so good, and he's very interested in Elena. The series is based on the L.J. Smith book series (which predates Stephenie Meyers' Twilight books) and is from Kevin Williamson (Dawson's Creek) and Julie Plec (Kyle XY). The Vampire Dairies stars Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder (Lost).

As for Reaper's cancellation, there has been some buzz about the series moving to syndication. But Reaper star Tyler Labine is moving on to the Fox comedy Sons of Tucson, while the show's creators Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas just signed a production deal with rival studio 20th Century Fox TV and won't be back.

Below is the new schedule for the fall 2009 season.

Well. Smallville on Fridays. I guess that means a planned cancellation after next season. That just sucks...

By loganschlieghliegh at 1:59 PM ON 05/21/09

Gee, I seem to remember when they moved it Thursday that people like you felt it was due to be canceled back then also. The only thing that sucks are people that refuse to give things a chance before they happen. Thursday could have, and in most peoples minds should have, been the kiss of death for Smallville when it was moved to Thursdays. Fortunately the fans proved everyone wrong on that. My only bitch is where were their thought process on pairing up shows when the powers that be at the now defunct WB had the opportunity to pair up Smallville with Birds of Prey?

By cogadh at 2:36 PM ON 05/21/09

The thing is, they have already announced that the upcoming 9th season of Smallville will be the final season for the show. Frankly, the show should have been canceled long ago, they've gone well past what should have been its natural end point (Clark leaving Smallville to work in Metropolis) and just calling the show "Smallville" seems silly, since almost none of it actually takes place there.

By Boda at 3:02 PM ON 05/21/09

Thank You, cogadh!

My thoughts exactly!

By buffybuff at 3:41 PM ON 05/21/09

Actually, if you pay attention at least half of the show still takes place in Smallville. All of the main characters live in Smallville. Clark and Lois just work in Metropolis and some of the action takes place there. Also, the actors are signed on for a 10th season should the show be renewed.

People moan a lot about Fridays, but it is one of the biggest nights for sci-fi. Smallville is going to be on against Ghost Whisperer, Medium, Dollhouse, Stargate Universe, & Sanctuary. Sounds like the busiest sci-fi night of the week to me. Fridays have long been the biggest night on the Sci-Fi channel.

Some other Friday night shows: Stargate, Atlantis, BSG, Eureka, Doctor Who.

Well moving Smallville to Fridays mite as well be saying good luck and this will be the last year. Friday is were series go to die only worse could be Saturday.

By keth at 5:15 PM ON 05/21/09

If the show was moving to Friday on a station like BBC America I wouldn't be worried. But with a regular TV station, pairing it up with a re-run of Top Model no less, yeah I think that's pretty much the end.

It's too bad too. Nine seasons is a great run for a genre show. Too many sci-fi type shows seem to falter (or are just outright ended) after 3 or 4 seasons (no matter how good initially) which makes the genre look weak by comparison. This only encourages TV execs into the thinking that Sci-Fi is still the domain of kids and doofuses. Even Sci-Fi channels upcoming SyFy nonsense purports this belief.

I would love to see Smallville return for a double0digit season, but I don't think it's going to happen.

By Mr. Peepers at 5:20 PM ON 05/21/09

Well good, maybe this will be the final nail in Smallvilles coffin. The show has gotten consistently worse and worse. I never understood why it was paired with a far superior show like Supernatural.

By lindyxmjh at 5:43 PM ON 05/21/09

Because Peepers, Smallville got worse for the Dawson's Creek/90210 crowd, but has actually gotten better for the fans of the comic books. It's going to end in its final season just where people always wanted it to.

It was also a great lead in to Supernatural, which superior show or not, it probably wouldn't have survived if it had aired seperately. That Thursday line up was one of the best the CW ever had, on par with the original Smallville/Angel Wednesday, but now Supernatural has the footing to stand on its own, and it should help this new Vampire show out because of it, although hiding it under the "Goth" banner is going to be a bad idea since people are naturally turned away by that vampire make-believe culture crap, so much so that this show will get the same negativity that Twilight had to overcome (and some would argue that it failed big time at that).

By DynaMike at 5:53 PM ON 05/21/09

While technically I'm a little sad that there will be only one more season of Smallville, I'm actually quite relieved that I'll only have to suffer through Tom Welling's horrible acting ability for just one more year.

By lfhlaw at 6:09 PM ON 05/21/09

I have seen twilight but if it's a soapy vampire story, it's gonna be a pass for me and i'll just tune in for Supernatural. In addition, I'm gonna have to fire my DVR up for Friday since it seems like the place to stick Sci-fi TV shows lately. What ever happened to Sunday Sci-fi?

By a different tim at 6:35 PM ON 05/21/09

I caught the season finale of Supernatural and I forgot how good it was. I can't wait til next season Jensen's pop culture one-liners are the greatest. Anywho I may watch that vamp show just because of that chick from Degrassi. Go Brunettes!

By Mr. Peepers at 7:35 PM ON 05/21/09

Thanks for setting me straight lindyxmjh. That does make alot of sense actually.

"Thursdays go Goth"

god what a stupid tagline.

but appealing to the mallgoths of America by syndicating a vampire soap opera will bring in the dough.

By matt at 8:22 PM ON 05/21/09

this is suoposedly the last season of supernatural as the creators n stars want it to end already

By cathy at 9:17 PM ON 05/21/09

REAPER is still alive. Well maybe a zombie, but that's Undead, right?
The Hollywood Reporter http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/cont....c0f60c8af5aed4f says talks still ON for Reaper Season Three for syndication Sundays; write your CW local affiliate and ABC Studios, tell them there's a fanbase for REAPER. We’re hearing back from the affiliates that they are considering the deal; apparently some are worrying about Tyler leaving, so reassure them that we’d still watch the show without him. Addresses and links at reaperdmv.com.

By SuperFan at 12:34 AM ON 05/22/09

Seriously? "Thursdays go Goth"? What are they even thinking over there at the CW? There is absolutely nothing "goth" about Supernatural. And when you're parading out a new show that's going to turn a lot of viewers off to it before they even give this show a new chance. Sure, Supernatural can stand on it's own now but that tag line has got to be one of the CW's worst ideas yet--and that's saying something!

By REDante at 3:36 AM ON 05/22/09

These high school vampires, Vampire diaries, Twilight, whatever... how old are they, and why are they still going to school?

By Fanboy79 at 7:23 AM ON 05/22/09

How bought they move Top model to 8pm Friday and Smallville to 8pm wednsday, that would work much better. I'll keep watching Smallville if they keep making it. This show looks interesting.

By mike at 12:21 PM ON 05/22/09

They have to bring reaper back. They should play it right before or after smallville. Keep the manly shows on tv.

By wrjones at 12:27 PM ON 05/26/09

Let's not forget that while there have been some successes, Friday hasn't always been kind to sci-fi. Shows like Firefly and, if I recall correctly, Harsh Realm and VR5 all died there.

By NadaNuff at 11:25 AM ON 05/27/09

"While technically I'm a little sad that there will be only one more season of Smallville, I'm actually quite relieved that I'll only have to suffer through Tom Welling's horrible acting ability for just one more year."

"Suffer through?" Really? When I'm "suffering" through a TV show, I change the channel.

And when was it confirmed for sure that season 9 was the last? Or was that an assumption?
