Warner to adapt British TV's Primeval for the U.S. big screen

Warner to adapt British TV\'s \<i\>Primeval\<\/i\> for the U.S. big screen

Warner Brothers has acquired screen rights to Primeval, the British ITV TV series that airs in the United States on BBC America and SCI FI Channel, Variety reported.

Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend) and Kerry Foster will produce through Goldsman's WB-based Weed Road banner. Emily Cummins will also be involved in a producing capacity.

Goldsman, who scripted the Ron Howard-directed Angels & Demons with David Koepp, will hire a writer to draft Primeval.

In the series, ferocious prehistoric and futuristic creatures appear through wormhole time portals, and a covert team headed by an evolutionary scientist tries to close the doors and quietly thwart the creatures.

The series, which has run three seasons, was co-created by Tim Haines and Adrian Hodges and produced by Haines' shingle, Impossible Pictures.

Warner and Goldsman will transplant the action to the United States and ramp up the spectacle.

"Warner and Goldsman will transplant the action to the United States and ramp up the spectacle."

And as usual, they have to "improve" an already excellent idea. They'll probably turn it into a comedy starring Will Ferrell... OH WAIT THEY ALREADY DID!!!

I was mildly interested, because I do love the show, right up until this:

Warner and Goldsman will transplant the action to the United States and ramp up the spectacle.

In other words, they're going to utterly ruin the very thing that makes the show unique and interesting. And we'll be left with yet another stupid American action movie with Hollywood-pretty actors woodenly emoting with stuff blowing up all around them. No thanks.

They didnt have to transplant Harry Potter, so why this!? Keep it in the UK, ramp up the effects if they must... and what are they going to call it.. Primeval is the name of a horror movie released recently about a giant crocodile.

I wonder if they will have Sleestacks?

While there are a number of reasonable US versions of British TV programmes, there's probably far more that people would rather forget.

Anyone remember the US versions of Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, Coupling, Cracker, One Foot in the Grave, Men Behaving Badly, The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin.....? No?

The number of transplants that don't take no matter how big the budget or stars leaves me very sceptical of of this will fair. Even the Americanized version of Doctor Who that was the 96 film was rather underwhelming in comparison to the 2005 remake on the BBC. What's wrong with trying to show Primeval as it is on US mainstream TV? Or funding the UK version to be a big screen version?

Maybe the upcoming Life on Mars remake will indicate whether current UK TV can be transferred to the US....

Why can't they Show British Shows on American Televison. American Television is shown on UK Tele all the time. Buffy, Angel, Star Trek: TOS-ENT, Lost, Heroes.

I think it's Bout time We get some fair trades!

Bring Doctor Who to the MainStream US Tele. Also, Merlin, Primeval, Jeckl, The UK Version of Life on Mars, Robin Hood, and Ashes to Ashes!

That is so stupid. That is the problem with Hollywood, if they didn't conceive it or can't at least put their "improvement" on it than it doesn't matter how great it already is it must be crap.

If we are really all out of original ideas, how about making an American spin off to act as a companion piece? Don't make a movie. Make a series set in the U.S. where the portals start appearing. Use the British cast to introduce the show and hand off to the American cast. They have the opportunity for frequent cross overs like Doctor Who and Torchwood and it will lessen the the criticisms that the new American show doesn't compare to the British original since they will coexist.

By Snowkestrel at 11:44 AM ON 05/15/09

@Kerrith
That is a BRILLIANT idea, and as such, is virtually guaranteed to not be the way it's done by Hollywood.
*sigh*
And pardon my ignorance, but 3 seasons? Has the 3rd season been shown in the US yet? Did I miss it? Or were all 3 seasons shown in the one lump on BBC America?

Snowkestrel, the next season of Primeval begins on BBC America tomorrow (May 16) night. Enjoy.

Thank You, My Good Baron. I woudl have missed it.

This is a good idea and a bad idea. A good idea if you stick with the original British cast and expand on the storylines established on the television show. Bad idea, very bad idea if you try to 'Americanize' it. I have no problem with the characters coming to America and having to deal with an anomaly, that would be interesting. Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster should collaborate with Tim Haines and Adrian Hodges, after all it is their baby. You go that route, throw in a reasonable, lead, counter American cast, such as Nathan Fillion, Natalie Morales, Hill Harper, Elizabeth Banks, not HUGE STARS but recognizable faces, with acting chops and you have yourself a show! Possibly another movie franchise. But go the strictly American route, I have three words... Life On Mars. Will Goldsman and Foster consider this? Not likely. They probably already have an idea and pride will insist they stick with it. Too bad because Primeval could really the next big sci-fi fantasy classic in the making. Wait a minute, what am I saying, it already is to those of us in the know. Guess we'll just have to wait to see... Still one can always hope. Here's a suggestion, why don't they leave Primeval alone and do something about getting 'Meg' on the big screen? Now that would be constructive use of their time. Primeval is doing just fine as is. We don't need Warner 'Smothers' screwing up a good thing.

I'm with the fanboys on this. Make a movie with the UK cast to introduce the show to American audiences that aren't already watching on BBC America. Toss in some American cast for a US spinoff or something like that. Seems kind of silly that these portals are only appearing in England (like Torchwood, best not to dwell too much on the idea that a place like Cardiff, Wales, is the somehow the centre of the multiverse). I've watched the first two seasons on Space in Canada and it's now one of my favourites. I even watch the re-runs.

FresnoTimelord - I've seen all of those and loved them. We can watch Doctor Who, Sarah Jane Adventures, and Primeval on the Sci-Fi channel. Robin Hood, Torchwood, and Hex on BBC America. Spooks (AKA M.I.-5) on A&E. I also heard that Merlin is going to air here soon. I watch all of those shows online because I can't get enough of british tv. I also like Demons, Afterlife, New Tricks, Spaced, The Office, and No Heroics.

By Taisin at 6:20 AM ON 05/16/09

I'm sorry but primeval isn't great big deal if they remake it. The reason britain brings in tons of US shows is due to the fact they don't want to spent money making their own. When they do you get cheesy kids TV like Primeval.

By jolinar at 5:19 PM ON 05/16/09

@Kerrith
Thank you, Thank you, I am glad you brought that up. I had that very same idea! They should do that instead of making a movie (if they do make a movie they should use the cast of the show).

By maala at 1:16 AM ON 05/17/09

Not only is Primeval a good show, along with many of the other Scifi shows from the UK, but has anyone caught the show, Being Human. Sounds like it would be a dumb idea, but it's about a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost who share a flat together. Good show. Hope they start to show it here soon.

In other words, it's going to be exactly like the British version?
